The deal wlth steel

Ligbt gauge steel fruning has occasionally been both a real and imaginary threat to the suprcnacy of the raditional wood stud. But today, steel's tbr€at to wood looks more real than al any dme during the last balf century.

While steel studs are used in only 2% of all homes built in the U.S., st€el associations predict rising lumber prices and availability poblems will enable st€el 0o capffe 25% of the new home market within five years.

Lumber producers don't buy this scenario. They counter that if steel reached even a l0% sharp, the pfessur€ on lumber would be off and woodpices woulddocline. St€el, according o the lumberuren, would lose its price advanage and its auraction fq hure builden.

Otlers aren't so sure. At the National Association of Home Builders show earlier this year, a steel ftarned home was built to demonstrate new technologies and systems. Buildet interest was intense. Calls seeking information about st€el rarl 30-40 per day on a NAHB hotline for builden.

simple. hoduct prejudices and life-long wort patt€rns ar€ not quickly or easily changed. Problems and pitfalls are present for any builder making the change. Franers must be retrained. Inventory handling is not identical to that of wood. Actual assembly and other real life Murphy's Law problems can be quic.k o surface. To make the sale of steel studs profitable, retailers must be sur€ steel suppliers will provide essential raining and technical support

With lumber prices a driving force behind any retreat from wood studs, converts had best remember that lumber price trends are notoriously difftcult (read inpossible) to predict. If price is the sole reason to change, good sense indicates adding a large measure of caution to the mix.

Steel studs have some features and benefits wood studs do not. Their producers also claim environmental advantages. wbile these claims do not stand up to close exanination, that doesn't mean tbe public won'tbelieve them.

This time it doesn't look as if steel studs will corveniently go away as they have in the past.

slowed in the late 1970s, tbe firm entered the wood readng business in Ftorida The Auburndale plant produced its first cbarge in late 1978. Although there were then 36 treaters within a l5-mile radius, the facility tunred a profit in its first month of operation.

\M tro its acquisition of the assets of five forrrer Chesapealce Wood Treating plants last year, Universal Forest Products significantly incteased its already sizable foothold in the wood preserving industry. Universal's 15 reating plans located across tbe country from New England to the Rockies produced nearly a half-billion board feet of CCA pressure treated lumber in 193. And that impnessive total is almost ceruain to be eclipsed this year as the Chesapeake plants bave been operated by Universal only since October.

Although the rrajority of the company's facilities are in the more heavily populated Northeastern U.S., the Southern Division plays an important role both in its past history and growing funre. Established in 1955 in Michigan as a wholesale sup'plier of lumber and components to the mobile home industry, Universal built strategically-located manufacturing and distribution yards and becane the world's largest builder of engineered roof trusses for manufactured housing (a position it still holds). When the growth of that industry

After properties were added in Indiana and Pennsylvania, a large wood treater was purchased in Union City, Ga., in 1982. Subsequently that facility (now one of the company's bigher volume plans) was totally rebuilt under the direction of chemist Ian Stalker, an internationalty recognized authority on lumber Eeating' Today Stalker is vice president of wood preservation and heads a full-time staff of graduate chemists who supervise installation and continuously nonitor the operation of Universal's Eeating facilities. A third Southern plant was added last year in Holly Hill, S.C. Universal targeted the do-it-yourself market in the lae 1980s, entering with its CCA treated products - lattice, fencing, Deck Necessities and other value-added specialties. In five years, the firnt's share of consumerrelated products rose from 5Vo to slEo of its sales.

Last year, Universal treated 48$ million board feet of lumber, 90Vo of which was southern pine with the remainder ponderosa pine, her/fir, etc.

Universal's history of dealing with production lines - and in satisfying tle requirements of HUD, NCBCS' third party testing agencies, etc., in fabricating trussestaught it the importance of standing behind the quality of is products. (Nearly all its treated lumber includes a lifetime limited warranty) Another advantage for Universal in terrrs of its ability to grow with d-i-y reteilers is that it combines value-added nanufacturing (ripping/trimming/painting/assembly) with CCA treating, comprehensive marketing assistance and nationwide distribution. That means every piece of treated conrmodity lumber is grade-stamped and end-tagged to ensure proper penehation and retention. That treated fencing products are made with jigs and automatic nailing equipment. And specialties are produced not just to standard rules but in grades consumers want.

he key phrase is full service and their aim is to provide the highest quality, most diversified treated wood products available.

"Whatever a store wants, we can supply it on one Euck," says Ed Galt, general sales and purchasing mannger for Southeast Wood Treating, Jasper, Al.

The company began in Louisville, Al., in 1979, later adding other plants and production facilities in Alabama and Florida. And as the company has grown into one of the largest treaters in the south, it has expanded its product line to include the latest developments in wood reating technology.

Their comprehensive range of products includes CCA lumber treated in all concentrations, water repellent lumber guaranteed for 50 years, fire retardant wood and countless outdoor specialty products, ftom designer mail box posts to decorative fencing.

When customers need something special, the company prides itself on being able to produce items to exact specifications. Their mills can prcpare even the most difficult sizes, to help customers meet the most demanding architectural requirements. The treater figures dealers shouldn't have to miss sales just because the pieces aren't nonnally stocked by their suppliers.

Southeast attributes its success to:

Quality Control (they prepare lumber in their own sawmill, produce specialty products in their own remanufacturing plant, and deliver products with their own fleet of 30 modern fucks).

. Product Knowledge (highly experienced sales and purchasing staffs in rhe reating plant and mill).

. Continuing Service after the Sale (lpC product coding for faster pricing and easier inventory control; Electronic Data Service to keep customers updated and informed with detailed monthly and quarterly sales reports).

To emphasize is commitrrent to quality, Southeast switched over a year ago from treating with generic chemicals to using Hickson's nationallyknown Wolman brand. The changeover has been costly for the company, but Southeast is deterrrined to produce the best product it possibly can.

t may be the treated wood company of the future. And it's all service.

Building Products Plus Co. is a one-year-old full service specialty disribution company selling to users of wood products in Texas, contiguous states and Mexico. With a 12,000 sq. ft. facility for offices, distribution and storage in South Houston and a lumber yard in Corpus Christi, Tx., it is actually four companies in one (Building Products Plus, American Pole & Timber Co., Fire Retardant Wood Co. and Gulf Coast Bulkheading Supply). Co-owners William Plant and Dorian Benn say their service is as much lnow-how as wood products. Because the project is more important to them than the product, they wok througb it with the customer from start to finish.

"The d-i-y revolution is typified by the macho, 'Home ImProvement' tlpe male with work gloves and nail apron who goes to the lumber yard and picks every Piece himself," says Planr "Now we atre seeing the buy-i-y revolution, typified by well educated consumers more interested in the specifications, the value and the suitability of the producl This buyer is less tactile, more disceming and willing to make an intellectual buYing decision based on a comparison of features and benefits, then over the phone give you a oedit card number and have it delivered to the site. The b-i-yer might be in a dress or a gray suit and sit on a condo committee and never see the

BP+ helps users decide what wood products to buy and where to get them They service dealers, archit@ts, general contractors and remodelers. Specialties include fann and ranch fencing and barns; utility, telephone and structural poles; Wolmanized lumber and treated plywood; fire retardant wood and plywood; framing, siding and specialty wood; foundation, bulkheading and marine timben, and wholesale and consulting services. Recent large projects have included anusement parks, zoos and a 9,000 sq. ft. custom home. A higb percentage of the material they sell is pressure Eeated wood, but they have found a market in manufacbred wood products as well.

Flexibility is the company's hallmark. "Rigidity and narrow-mindedness doom your business," says Plant. He invites inquiries on design, installation, materials, whatever, and promises to service all product information requests however small or unusual. He even invites customers to call evenings and weekends.

The aim is to offer the maximum service per sale, operating with the lowest possible overheads and fastest turns. The company has a huge library of design, construction and specification data, up-to-date price, availability and grade infomtation on a sophisticated database system, experienced management, well-developed sales contacts, and its own fleet of trucks.

Sales for the first year were well into seven figures, a giant step towards surpassing projections of $5 million annually within three years.

Fed Projects Spur Metric Use

Pushed by federal construction, virtually all U.S. construction could be converted to metric wi0in the next five !o t€n yeafs.

Most federal agencies met the goal of designing all new projects in metric by January 1994 and some exceeded ir

Federal construction appropriations otal over $50 billion with about $20 billion ready for or in the design or construction stage. By 1996, federal metric work will approach $50 billion, not including state and local matching funds.

With so much money allotted to federal construction, it is likely that eventually all construction will convert to metric.

TIy a new tact to sell more deck accessories

A CCORDING to a recent survey, approximately 2lVo lllof U.S. households have decks with 78% of them constructed of long-life pressure reated lumber.

Does this mean that retailers sbottld cross these home' owners off as possible customers for decks or pressure treated products? Definitely not! Many of the basic 8'x8' squar€s built to satisfy a developer's promise of a deck are ripe for updating.

"Ther€'s lots of sales potential for sophisticated dealers who realize decks are u ideal spring or summer home improvement project," explains Osmose spoke swoman Suzanne Pacitti.

"Using their deck design proSrams, retailers can show homeowners how to install accessories such as railings, balusters or spindles to update an existing 'plain vanilla'

Turned epirdle deck, turning it into a stunning outdoc area"

Many homeowners are unaware that deck accessories ranging from contemporary to colonial are available at home centers and think they have no choice but to live with the "postage stamp that came with their home," she points out. However, a salesperson using a deck design package can easily show them how to expand and enhance their basic design or enclose it with a railing to make it safer for young children.

If the deck size is satisfactory, the addition of decorative ball tops and spindles on a railing echoing the style of the home or an arbor to offer more shade may be all that is necessary. Smallish decks can be enlarged by extending Oe foundation and flooring, then adding a railing or arbor.

In many instances, the addition may be put on a different

level,

with a decorative handrail. Wbatever the choice, ready-to-install components are usually available and easy for a d-i-yer to add.

Built-in benches, tables, planter boxes, storage chests and sandboxes are other options, but updating and improving is not limited to the deck. There are related projects that enhance the deck and increase the livability of the outdoor area. Other possibilities are gazebos, trellises, often with seating areas, tree houses, cooking centers, children's play equipment, wind screens and privacy fences.

Low voltage lighting systems, insect screening for decks, porches or gazebos, outdoor fumiture, barbecues, pots, containers, plants, gardening equipment and products are add-on sales to a deck improvement project. Letting homeowners and customers know that remodeling ! do".n't stop at the back door is n important, Pacitti points out.

I Sne suggests that retailers

E advertise "deck remodeling," ! naue deck updating clinics, set

E up a summer living section t with a "before and after" deck and cross merchandise both deck remodeling and outdoor living products.

Profit-ltl?king strategies that sell fasteners & connectors

wfir;l:::,:1ff"#ffrliffi; a majm profit center for a retailer.

In many stores hardware accounts for l4-154o of net sales, according to the National Retail Hardware Association. Profit margins, they say, average over 4OVo with some retailers using variable pricing to maintain margins of 50Vo or better. With a

Story at a Glance

How to turn fasteners and connectors Into a major profit center ... ideas to help a retailer maintain margins ol 4V/o and better ... techniques that work at independent stores.

high percentage of fasteners in the blind item category, margins can often exceed 807o.

Retailers who are successful with fasteners and connectors work !o create a strong product niche. They stock enough SKUs to fill any need without having to special order and make the section a dominant feature. Broad selections have been found to attract mofe customers than low prices.

Retailers are successful following completely different strategies of department placement. Some place an impressive fastener display at the front of the store, making sure it is one of the fint deparunents seen by the customer. Others locate an equally prominent display at the back with the idea that it draws customers through the store, exposing them to other merchandise. Whether the display is up front on in back, it must be

powerful. Developing a s8ong product niche also denands fasteners and connectors be cross merchandised in the lumber and power tool departments as well as near the contractor service desk.

Fasteners and connectors are labor intensive. Constant inventory maintenance is required for a consistent instock position. A store employee or a factory rep must be responsible for checking inventory and maintaining stock on an established schedule. Good housekeeping is second only to being in-stock. Fasteners and connectors are easily mixed up and need constant care so customers can find the items they need.

Bin labels and price stickers must be accurate. Displaying in-use sketches or photos with use instructions can bolster a customer's confidence in making his selection. Some manufacturers including Kant-Sag and Simpson Strong Tie provide displays showing how their products are used. Teco/Lumberlok has posters with line drawings of projects and explanations of hardware needed for them.

Customers like the choice of buying individual or packaged fasteners and connectors. Bulk fasteners sell best to customers requiring only a few. Packaged fasteners, which often have a price break, appeal to those who need large numbers of fasteners and don't mind buying a few extra

Most retailers feel that all but the most experienced customers need help in making their selections. One or more of tle sales staff should be an expert on fasteners and connectors. Stores that have deck clinics or similar project seminars find that spending some time 0alking about the correct fasteners and connectors improves hardware sales. Other stores report

good results including fasteners in project kits. Teco is marketing several kits with project plans, lumber lists and fasteners or connectors.

Customers favor stainless steel fasteners and connectors, relating them to rust-free service and high quality. Some retailers have been able to eliminate lightweight, inexpensive fasteners and connectors, finding customers are willing to spend more for higher quality.

A profitable, winning niche in fasteners and connectors is best developed with strong merchandising, offering a wide selection with deep stock, knowledgeable employees, good housekeeping, customer education and letting your market know what you have.

Southern Plne Panel Looks Ahead To 2000

Concentrating on future timber supply, environmental issues and competitive products, a panel of 16 soulbern pine industry voluntcers is compiling a bluep, rint for marketing between 1995 and 2000.

The panel proje.cts southern pine lumber capacity could reach l7 billion board feet by the end of the century. Other findings of the group, which has been meeting for the past year under chairman Clayton Barns, Willamette Industries, and vice chairman Larry Kirkwold, Weyerhaeuser:

O The South will continue to supply an increasing percentage of the international wood products market, although resource constraints and increased government regulation will inhibit production.

o Western timber supplies will continue to decline because of harvesting restrictions and mill closures.

O Environmental restrictions will increase pressure to reduce timber harvesting in all areas.

O Environmental restriction of private and industrial landowner timber harvesting rigbts will increase.

o Southern pine's marketing mes-

sage for the next five years should demonsrate wood as tbe only natural, renewable, environmentally superior building material.

O Safety and environmental issues of pressure treated lumber will need mce attention.

o Competition for available timber will increase between lumber, panel, engineered wood and pulp producen.

O Present soulhern pine markets will be pressured by substitute products such as steel, concrete, aluminum, plastics, imported wood poducts and engineercd lumber including laminated veneer lumber and l-joists.

IFfHANCES are your structural Vpanel sales deparonent is fielding more and more questions about oriented srard board. Wbat is it? Why isn't it btt€r looking? What's it for? How do you use it?

lVhat ls OSB?

Oriented strand board, or OSB, is an engineered panel product designed for strucnral applications in residential and nonresidential buildings. Because of its strength, availability and environnental friendliness, it's a product builders and remodelers should consider.

Why don't the panels look more like plywood?

OSB panels have a mottled exterior because they are composed of compressed wood sEands arranged in layers at right angles to one another and bonded with fully waterproof adhesive. This cross lamination creates strength and stiffness tlat merits a perfornance rating.

What does performance rated mean?

A performance rated wood product meets performance requirements based on an intended end use. The structural wood panel performance standard provides a corlmon performance baseline for all panel types, regardless of manufacture. These standards and ratings guiuantee top

OSB: what, where, when, why & how

performance. They are similar to the performance standards and tesB used in the electnonics, automotive and aircraft industries.

What ls OSB reted for?

The Anerican Plywood Association uses three basic performance standards for oriented strand board: sructural adequacy, dimensional stability and bond durability. Performance criteria for these have been established by building code requirements and panel products tests. Typical tests include linear expansion, racking, uniform load, concentrated static load, impact resistance, direct fastener withdrawal and lateral fastener strength. OSB panels manufactured under APA performance standards are rated fon three end uses: single layer flooring (APA ltated SnrdI-Floor), exterior siding (APA Rated Siding) and floor, wall and roof sheathing (APA Rated Sheathing).

How can I tell lf they are APA Rated?

All APA Rated products are stamped with the APA trademark which identifies them and gives information about their perfonnance.

Where do you use OSB?

OSB is a good choice for home construction. Panels are strong and designed to resist racking and shape distortion under high wind and earthquake forces. With excellent fastener-holding capability even when nailed close to the edge, they are lightweight relative to their size, easy to handle and install. They resist deflection and bending, absorb shoch have no lnots or core voids and don't delaminate or split. Because it's made of wood, OSB is a natural insulator and protects against heat loss and condensation.

Does OSB have special uses?

APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor, available with square or tongue-andgroove ends, is a combination sub-

floor-underlayment panel designed for use under carpet and pad. If it is used witb tile or linoleum, an additional thin layer of underlayment is recommended. APA Rated Siding comes in both panel and lap form in a variety of surface treatments and takes paint readily.

Is OSB sultable for d-l-y usc?

OSB is not just for professional builders and remodelers. OSB panels can be an economical, versatile choice for many do-it-yourself projects including partitions, cabinets, shelving, backboard and toys. OSB panels manufactured for d-i-y use do not have exposure or span ratings.

Why do you say lt's "environmentally friendly?"

Although OSB has been around for over 10 years, it has recently been recognized as an environmentally friendly engineered wood product. Severe harvest restrictions have underlined the importance of OSB's ability to utilize low-cost hardwoods, plantation thinnings and small, fastmaturing species grown in managed forests or tree fanns. OSB uses 85907o of the log with the bark, saw trim and sawdust usually converted into energy or pulp chips. OSB panels continue to be environmentally friendly after installation. Bonded with fully waterproof phenolic resins, they are exempt fron HUD emission testing and certification requirement. Next time a customer asks, "What's that funny stuff?," tell him!

Retailers WillSurvive & Thrive

Retailers who "survive and tirive in tie 1990s" will have to be adaptable while sticking to the basics, prediccs trend watcher Dr. Rogo Selbert.

He recommends retailers become futurists by:

/ Becoming and staying infonned about trends affecting their business.

/ Knowing, understanding, servicing and learning from customers.

/ Examining assumptions and underpinnings and keeping focused on strategic intents.

/ Responding and adapting where change is warranted; strengthening what deserves to be retained.

Futurists, Selbert explains, are "professional generalists who apply common sense to the obvious. But of course, cornmon sense isn't common anymore. And these days it's a fulltime job to detemrine the obvious."

A First In Foam Board

A new residential foam sheathing board, reportedly the first protective film-faced foam board to bring the superior oerformance of inter- performance locking edges to all residential sheathing thicknesses, has been introduced by Amoco.

Amofoam-SLX

Iextruded polystyrene insulation reduces air infiltration better than ordinary square-edge boards. With a shiplap edge on both vertical sides, it helps eliminate the gaps often created by traditional squareedge products. The shiplap edge also permits one-person installation by locking the shiplap edge of the second board into the slot formed by the stud and shiplap of the finr

A lough, protective, non-reflective, plastic film laminate on both sides of the foam sheet helps withstand the rigors of on-site installation.

It is available in 4'x8' and 4'x9' sheets, n ll2",314" and 1" thicknesses.

Granite Look Flooring

Vermont Granite has been added to Kentile Floors' Estate collection of comnercial and residential vinvl tile.

The resilient flooring has the look and feel of nature's very own surfaces without the big price tag.

It features a l/8" gauge premium vinyl, thicker than other luxury products, and a crisp beveled edge. Its satin gloss finish plus durable Perma-Tuff wear surface provides easy care maintenance.

Ten fashion colors are available, with a matching grout in three soft granite shades.

Strip Flooring Demand To Increase

Trends and markets are developing to maintain and sEengthen the demand by consumers for srip flooring.

"Total flooring business has swung back to unfinished strip and away from specialty products like parquet and prefinished wood," explained Claude Taylor, Memphis Hardwood Flooring Co., Memphis, Tn. "People have made srip flooring a fashion trend - it is tle favored product."

Re0ailers can expect this interior fashion swing to last. These kinds of trends are fairly long tenn, with a 10 to 20 year swing, according to Taylor. "The e@nomy wields the greatest influence on the flooring business," he added. "The biggest threat is when the economy overheats, inflation drives up interest rates, which raises moftgages and disqualifies new homeowners. For now, we see the opposite happening."

Dale Elliott, P. W. Plumly Lumber Corp., Winchester, Va., agrees. "1994 appears to be abuilding year," he said. "As housing starts go, so goes the flooring business. Judging from the activity among our customer base, we are lmking forward to a very active year."

Home Centers Add Bridal Registry

With June, the traditional month for weddings, approaching, more home cent€f,s might copy Home Depot and Builders Square and establish a wedding gift regisry. Both stores maintain regisries where future brides and grooms can list their gift preferences. Tools for house and guden, plants and even trash cans have more appeal for today's newlyweds than the custonury china and silver.

"Anything we sell in the store is eligible," said Pat Callahan, assistant manager at an Amarillo, Tx., Builders Square. "Most people are doing repain to their own house these days."

BORATE USE IN THE CARIBBEAN

I have read Building Products Digest for several years and compliment you on your publication. I like your approacb in educating tbe industry on new products, services and app'roacbes to old problems. In this ligbt, after reading "How to Sell Southern Pine As 'Wet' Damage Insurance" in the Januuy'94 issue, I decided to write.

Caribbean Lumber Co. and parent company Hawtborne Lumber Co. have been in the export business for over 45 years. Our primary markets are tbe Caribbean Islands. Because the temtite problem is severe and tbe potential for "wet" damage is high, we bave pushed using @ated lumber and plywood in all phases of home construction. Today, virtually every Caribbean island uses heated lumber and plywood. The degree varies from

bouse to house as well as island to island. On some islande 100% of the houses u8e 100% treated materials in their con' strwtion, wbile on otbers tbe Petc€ntages are lower. Usage maY varY, but the sdvantages of ueated wood are well established.

Consumer concerns over tbe greenish color of CCA treated wood and in some cases concerns over toxicity, kePt uE searching for an alternative. In l99l we found borate beated lumber and plywood.

Borate as a wood preservative is not new. Borates have been used for over 45 years in New Zealand, Austalia and some parts of Europe. In the U.S., Forest Products Research Laboratory wood scientists and others have been studying the use and applications of borates on different wood species for several years. U.S. Borax, Inc. has developed and registered TIM-BOR (disodium octaborate tetrahydrate) especially for the wood preservation market. AWPA has incorporated TIM-BOR treatment of southern yellow pine into standard C3l -91

Caribbean Lumber Co. and U.S. Borax bave developed closely monitored and quality conhol tested standards and procedures for SYP lumber and plywood treatmenl Caribbean becane the frst treating company licensed by U.S. Borax to heat with TIM-BOR and market products under tbe registered trade name CARI-

BOR. Marketed tbroughout the Caribbean Islands for total home congtstrction use, it offers the homeowner eecurity that his bome is protccted from wood destroying insects and wood decaying fungi with a colorless, odorless product that poses no significant risks to bumans or animals.

CARI-BOR heated wood is not corrosive to metal fasteners, nails or screws. The treatnent does not affect staining, painting, machining, sbaping or gluing of the wood.

Tbe concept of protecting the biggest investment nost people will make in their lives through building tbeir entire home with heated lumber and plywood is gaining acceptance in the U.S. Your article on protecting wet areas is just the beginning.

Some day we may be able to offset tbe exba cost of building with teated lumber by eliminating the need to Pretreat the soil. But in the meantime, building in protection through the use of heated lumber is money well spent. Protection supplied by clear pressure treated CARI-BOR lumber and plywood is the best alternative available.

CARI-BOR' Pressure Treated Wood

Clearly, The Best Nternative.

CARI-BOR pressure treated wood is clearly the best alternative when considering the expanded use of treated wood in residential structures. For interior applications there is no better alternative than CARI-BOR pressure treated wood.

CARI-BOR pressure treated wood is a product with a proven track record of protection. Protection which is both long term and highly effective against insects and decay. CARI-BOR pressure treated wood is a product whose only threat is to those wood destroying organisms.
