advertisement, this month spnsored by Huber Engineered Woods.

At Last Over the years on this page we've added our voice to those urging an industry-wide coalition to promote wood. Now, it's finally here. Called the Wood Promotion Network. it is a collaboration of 120 members and allied industry associations. They have raised an impressive war chest of $45 million for a three-year education program targeted at builders, retailers and consumers. Both American and Canadian firms are investing cash and in-kind contributions. The WPN is led by a council of coalition c.e.o.'s and managed by a small internal staff supported by strategic marketing partners.

The campaign kicked off at the National Association of Home Builders' International Builders Show in Atlanta. Ga.. last month. Under the banner "Be Constructive," it trumpeted the message of wood's central role in home construction, home improvement and remodeling as well as do-it-yourself projects.

"Wood is the greatest story never told," says Kelly McCloskey, president and c.e.o. of the WPN. "Wood is the material that literally built North America, from the dream home to the

picket fence that surrounds it, and we want everyone to know why wood continues to be the preferred building material for builders and homeowners alike."

Bozell Chicago, the marketing experts that created the Got Milk? and Pork-The Other White

Meat campaigns, is developing the program along with BSMGWorldwide/Chicago. The broadbrush approach includes trade and consumer education and promotion on the use of wood and wood products.

Their Web site, beconstructive.com, puts facts, articles and tips for professionals under one roof. For builders: issues and answers; for homeowners and d-i-yers: making home decisions, doit-yourself and a wood resource center. Future additions will include projects for parents and kids, lesson plans for teachers and students, plus labor and code regulations for builders. We wish them all the success in the world. Our only regret is that the industry hasn't been promoting and explaining the benefits of wood for the last 50 years.

A PRIMARY facor in OSB's .CLgrowth has been that it can be produced from a wide range of species, whether it's one that's readily available such as pine or what was

previously considered a scrap wood, such as aspen. More limited in supply and more treasured due to its unique properties, cedar is not thought of in either of those categories. Yet companies are using cedar for

OSB. According to Dr. Leonard

Guss, president of LGA Inc., a forest

industry marketing research firm, "Yes, cedar is expensive for ordinary OSB uses. However, it is used for specialties where it is of high value. Cedar is well known for its resistance to rot, bugs and weathering. It is generally used as closet lining to kill

moths."

For years, Huber Engineered Woods, Charlotte, N.C., has been producing 114",4'x8' cedar panels at its OSB mill in Commerce, Ga. Made of

ljUVo aromatic eastern red cedar, CedarStran panels protect silks and

wool clothing without the unpleasant smell of mothballs or the expense of

professional clothing storage.

Applications include closets, shelving, cabinets, drawers, boxes and storage chests.

Huber says CedarStran OSB panels cost significantly less than cedar planking, and are stronger, stiffer and lie flatter than other cedar panels. Plus, it's smooth sanded to enhance aromatic emission and prevent snags.

According to Guss, "Estimates

vary since Huber keeps its numbers to itself, but my estimate is that a maximum of 60,000 cubic meters are used annually-that's a drop in the bucket."

So why OSB? Huber's Sherry Walker explains, "OSB is stronger than particleboard, and it fits within our manufacturing capabilities. It's a compatible product to pine and aspen at our OSB mills." Guss adds that "another firm, Giles & Kendall, makes a product some-

Q. Wf,at if the cedar loses its scent?

A' fle reason the cedar has lost its scent is due to the crystallization of the cedar oil that builds on the outside surface of the wood and seals the openings. To rejuvenate the scent, lightly sand the outer surface of the cedar with 100:gnt rindpup"r'o. ,"ou, lightly with steel wool.

In addition, Ced-Or Forest

Products Inc., a subsidiary of Ced-Or Corp,. is building the first cedar OSB plant in Canada. Expected to be com-

pleted by year's end, the Bearn, Quebec, operations will mill 325,000 cubic meters of cedar annually. According to Guss, the mill "will make other specialties where cedar's attributes of longevity and bug killing will be useful, such as house siding."

Siding with Gypress

If IHAT DID Noah's Ark and the Y Y first doors of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome have in common? Legend has it that both were made of

the durable wood we know as cypress. In fact, it's said that the doors of the original St. Peter's were more than 1,100 years old when the building was torn down and reconstructed in the 1500s. When it comes to recommending a product based on its strength and good looks, cypress siding is hard to beat.

People who work with cypress on a regular basis say the wood's natural

durability is a plus for exterior applications. Because cypress generates cypressene, its own preservative oil, its heartwood is naturallv resistant to

insects, decay, chemical corrosion and

other damaging elements. For this reason, the wood has long been a favorite choice for long-wearing outdoor applications such as fence posts, telephone poles, pilings, docks and railroad ties.

Cypress also is an exceptionally stable wood, which makes it highly resistant to splitting and warping. Dimensional stability also enables the wood to readily accept paints and stains, although many people select cypress siding for the natural appeal of its honey-like hues, which can be maintained with a clear sealer or permitted to weather to a dark gray. The second- and third-growth trees in the swamps and streams of the

Southern U.S. yield a product of uncommon beauty and durability.

Even so, as with any wood, builders and homeowners should be aware of specific guidelines when recommending or installing cypress siding. Any successful siding installation

begins with moisture control. That means designing walls with moisture barriers that absolutely prohibit moisture from entering and condensing within an exterior wall cavity.

Keith Buckley, sales manager for Buckley Lumber, Oriental, N.C., a wholesaler of cypress siding and decking materials, recommends

adequately ventilated, as well.

Buckley says siding should be primed on both sides prior to installation with a good, stain-blocking, flat latex primer. Siding should be applied over a standard rigid-foam or foil-faced sheathing material. With

rigid foam sheathing, installers use angular threaded ring shank nails long

enough to penetrate at least an inch and a half into the framing members. Buckley recommends hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners.

Cypress has long been a favorite choice for longwearing outdoor applications.

Once installed, cypress should be stained or painted as quickly as possible, ideally during a period where the

homeowner or builder can anticipate

at least one week of good, clear weather. For customers who prefer a natural cypress look, Buckley recommends finishing the wood with a premium clear wood preservative.

Those opting for paint should select a high-quality primer that's

Tyvek as a vapor barrier, but alternatives can include 6-mil polyethylene,

compatible with the paint they're

asphalt-impregnated Kraft or foil-

primer. High-quality acrylic latex or oil-based paints are recommended for cypress siding. One thing to keep in mind: light-colored finishes reflect

backed insulation, vinyl-faced or foilbacked gypsum, or their equivalents.

In addition to installing a vapor barrier, every effort should be made

On a typical day, over 1,400 people visit the CRA Web site.

When it came to developing a Web site for the redwood industrv. we

knew exactly what it needed to io. It needed to be an extension of everything we are doing over the telephone, in our product literature and in our advertising.

In January 1997, CRA acquired the Internet domain name www.calredwood.org and began promoting red-

wood products over the Internet. From day one, there were separate areas on CRA's Web site for homeowners, builders and merchants. There was also an area that discussed

the redwood forests and explained how the redwood forests are regrown after harvest and how the mills protect

wildlife and waterways. On a typical day during the summer of 2000, over 1,400 people visited the Web site and spent an average of l0 minutes at the site. Some of

information on decks, fences or technical data sheets. Over 28 publications are available, including project plans, picture idea booklets and technical data sheets. These files can be viewed on screen or printed out.

Redwood merchants with faxl modems in their computers some-

times use these files to fax CRA literature to their customers in response to technical questions. Hundreds of visitors each day were interested in CRA's plans for projects such as benches, a picnic table, gaze-

bos, decks and fences. They visited pages where they could read and print step-by-step instructions for these projects. Detailed plans with dimension callouts are available along with 3-d models that can be turned and viewed from any angle. About 50 visitors each day were looking for a source for redwood, and

they visited the redwood locator.

them were visiting for the first time

These people found local sources by selecting a state and city. Other people were looking for specific products from playground equipment to red-

and others were returning, often refer-

wood seedlings and used CRA's

directory of specialty products. Each day, many people had specif-

ic questions about redwood properties, redwood grades and redwood

applications. They looked at the

Frequently Asked Questions

("FAQs") pages, where they learned why redwood is the best choice for decks, fences and many other pro-

jects. They found answers to ques-

tions about redwood grades, finishing options, fasteners and environmental

issues. Those whose questions

weren't of the "frequently asked" variety sent emails to CRA, and their questions were answered by CRA's technical staff. For four years now, our Web site has served as a natural extension of all the old-fashioned activities of the association.

For about the cost of developing and printing a new piece of product

literature, calredwood.org is helping homeowners, builders and merchants.

And, best of all, it's still doing it when we turn out the lights and go home at nisht.

on redwood may not be the same on all sides of a house. This is because sunlight and water cause redwood's color changes, and different areas of a house usually have varying types of exposure.

Two boards installed side by side may also vary in color because of the diversity of color and texture offered by individual pieces of redwood lumber. This is one of the aesthetically pleasing qualities of a natural material such as redwood, compared to the artificial uniformity of synthetic products. Should a more uniform appearance

be desired, redwood's natural color changes, a result of the weathering process, are completely reversible by

statement. Take the iime when their customer sold BCI@ Joists to a contractor who had never used engi-

hesitation, so they oflered to drive out to his iob site and help him frame the floor. Even though it meant each of them driving over 600 miles round trip. 1,100 feet of BCI's later, the contractor had a new

NAWLA Adds Environmental Policy The North American Wholesale Lumber Association has thrown its support behind industry certification programs

and has recognized the Sustainable Forestry Initiative for its environmental practices. NAWLA endorsed certification and encouraged members to support suppliers that use sustainable forest management practices.

Window Software Opens To Doors Expanding the capabilities of window engineering software has opened significant opportunities for door manufacturers.

Most early users of WTS Paradigm (formerly known as ProShape) have been window manufacturers, but makers of stile and rail doors, raised panel doors, and custom specialty doors are among those recently incorporating the technology. The software is provided as either a stand-alone program or fully integrated with the WoodWare System business application package. Riverside Millwork, Inc., Charlotte, N.C., and Annona Manufacturing Co., Annona, Tx., recently added the program to their WoodWare package.

Advantages of WTS Paradigm for door companies include:

. The ability to design architectural doors that are unique from project to project with the ease of a standard product selection.

. The ability to select standard patterns that may closely match the desired product. This base design can then be manipulated to match customer requirements for stile width, rail widths, profile type, pattern layout or any other custom attribute required. . The ability to engineer and create a manufacturing cut list that takes into account production methods, tolerances, and manufacturing limitations. Users include Sun Windows, Inc., Owensboro, Ky., and Palm Beach Woodwork Co.. West Palm Beach. Fl.

Lowe's Begins Huge Ad Blitz Even with 650 stores in 40 states, Lowe's Cos., North Wilkesboro, N.C., remains unknown to many Americans, a problem the nation's #2 home-improvement chain hopes to change with its recently launched nationwide advertising campaign.

The firm's current advertising budget is reported to be roughly $100 million annually. The new media blitz, however, with television spots during several popular primetime shows, will undoubtedly push that figure much higher. "The main goal is to build our brand," said senior vice president of marketing, advertising and communications Bob Gfeller. One television commercial, while not identifying chief competitor Home Depot by name, clearly implies that Lowe's is the better organized and more customer-friendly business of the two. Not to be outdone, Depot also is upping the ante, trotting out new ads that proclaim the chain to be "The Leader in Home Improvement." To wit, Lowe's replies with its own tag line: "Improving Home Improvement."

Klumb Lumber Co., Jackson, Ms., has purchased the assets of Canton Lumber Co.'s Greeneville. Tn.. distribution yard and will continue operations at the leased facility under the Canton Lumber name. Buddy Klumb expects the location to continue offering the same high grade specialty items, since his company's other distribution yards-in Atlanta, Ga.; Tyler, Tx.; Loxley, Al., and Gulfport, Ms.-all offer different product mixes suited to their markets.
