EDITORIAL

"As it says here in the brochure. . issue on redwood, we discuss II N THIS special in several places the literature and other pro-

motional materials available to help sell the product. But there is a problem here. Not in the literature itself as it is often of very high quality. Rather, the glitch is in distribution, or should we say lack of distribution. And the problem is not confined to redwood by any means. Too often manufacturers' printed literature and videos just don't make it through the channels to the ultimate end user. Wholesalers don't always do the job they are capable of doing in ensuring that these promotional devices get to the retailer for his use with the consumer. Some builders say they don't receive instructional matter that would save cost and headaches for all concerned. Good retailers' requests to suppliers for sales backup literature sometimes go unfilled.

This is not to say that each level can go

blameless in the literature wars. Too much

literature from manufacturers is misdirected, poorly thought out and contains instructions

DAVID CUTLER publisher

,nu, .un charitably be called murky. Wholesalers

who are eager for support materials have been stymied when products arrive without sales and use instructions. Retailers have been known to regularly accept sales material provided by their wholesaler and stick it under the counter, where it never again sees the light of day. And how many salesmen have a car trunk full of once beautiful brochures moldering away forgotten and unused? These dropped opportunities represent a considerable number of dollars lost. Each level of the chain: manufacturer, distributor/wholesaler and retailer needs to make a concerted effort to do what he can to regain sales previously lost to these lapses in good marketing. Most, but not all, sales literature and videos we see are well done and perform their function of attracting, informing and instructing the customer or user. They're too good to treat lightly. Better utilization is not one of life's unsolvable problems. Just grab a brochure, grab a customer and go to work.

Gets Results.

ples of new products from the smaller, young growth trees. These seasoned sidings are competitively priced and are being accepted by homeowners, builders and architects alike. Rustic sidings come in several popular patterns including thick-butt bevel, rabbeted bevel, v-shiplap, channel shiplap and tongue and groove. Like all redwood products, they take and hold finishes well. The different grade mix provided by young growth trees is making new products like these sidings possible. Lower in cost because they contain knots and sapwood, they are of the

expected redwood quality because knotty redwood grades, such as construction heart and construction, are

improving steadily. The characteristics of the young growth logs mean the knots are smaller and tighter than in old growth redwood because of more intergrown knots and fewer encased knots. Changes in the garden grades of

redwood (construction heart, construction common, merchantable heart and merchantable) also have been made. Traditionally, redwood garden grades have been shipped green with some shrinkage and

They find, according to Aulds, that drilling the customers on the importance of quality and showing them the difference is all it takes to convince them that redwood is best.

unfortunately, the distribution chain

Everyone who sells redwood needs to take responsibility for marketing and Promoting the Product. A logical distribution chain should exist for sales and Promotional materials. Hands-on experiences for redwood dealers EDWOOD mill trips to California are offering

IQI southern retailers and wholesalers opportunities for learning about every aspect of the redwood business from the nursery and forest to the mill, re-manufacturing and drying yards. Beginning in the forest, a typical tour shows where the

giant trees grow. Then participants are instructed in reforestation as well as logging techniques. Then a visit to a redwood nursery shows them how the seedlings used to restock harvested areas are grown. Genetic processes which they have read about become reality as they

talk with foresters and learn more about forest management.

Story at a Glance Mill trips, seminars offer opportunity to study redwood region . . . participants trace

lumber production from forest to shapping.. . CRA, redwood mills cooperate to provide learning experience. . .

Milling of the redwood products which they sell is visually demonstrated as they tour mills to watch the processing and survey the log decks where logs await their turn in the mill. As they watch, cants are sawn and then sent to other saws, edging and trimming machines, producing the lumber which they sell in their stores. The

air yard and the kiln show them exactly how the best grades of redwood are prepared for market. Familiar company names, Simpson, Palco and Georgia-Pacific, come to life as they tour the various facilities. For some, seeing Scotia, home of The Pacific Lumber Co. and one of the last company towns in the country, is a special experience. With the California Redwood Association playing host, the mill trip participants have an opportunity to tour operations and meet personnel of member companies including, in addition to Simpson, Palco and G-P, Miller Redwood Co.

Wholesale distributors from the south are annually invited to California to participate in the Simpson Timber Co.'s Redwood Seminar. They, too, trace the production of redwood from the forest to the mill, beginning with seeing the trees logged and following them through to the shipping area. They also are instructed in reforestation and visit the Simpson Timber Co.'s red-

wood nursery at Korbel as well as the Arcata operation. For those who can not travel to the Pacific Coast for either a mill trip or seminar, the CRA has special programs which it brings to the dealers in the south. The Lumbermen's Association of Texas is one of the first to work with the CRA with the object of making more regional presentations on redwood. Association conventions also provide forums for presenting programs on redwood. Each year the CRA and redwood producing companies expand their outreach program to tell the story of redwood to more dealers.

NE of the most unused tools that inde-

pendent retailers have available to them is cooperative advertising funds. Coop (the term used S the chain buyer) has made many of the larger home center chains media giants. Only a few years ago, the norm among home center advertisers was a single full page ad in the Thursday or Friday daily, followed by a second ad on Sunday. Now, home center advertisers dominate the insert sections ofthe metropolitan newspapers, the neighborhood shoppers, the third class mailings. and the electronic media. The lion's share of the dollars to support these programs comes from coop. Some of these coop funds are accrued from purchases, some are key city funds that manufacturers make available to secure a greater market share, some are plus-over-normal dollars supplied by manufacturers who are sold on the concept that the retailer's special promotion

will move additional inventorv off their

retailers in the market failed to use the coop funds they had accrued through purchases. It's ironic that the independent is supplying the means to makc their competition stronger. Here's how it happens. Manufacturers develop cooperative advertising programs offering each retailer an equal opportunity to accrue and utilize the funds. Each ofthe manufacturer's regions is issued a budget. Near the end ofthe program the region recognizes that the total budget will not be utilized because ofthe independens in the market who do not advertise. The managers ofthe region know that if the total budger goes unused this year, the allotment for next year will be reduced. So the call goes out to the heavy retailer advertisers that there are more ad dollan available ifthey get spent before rhe end of the program time-frame. I have worked with a number of retail building material dealers who feel that administrating and utilizing the available advertising coop

Accruing. administrating, utilizing, tracking. and claiming coop does not have to be a complex procedure. With only a little time to set up a procedure, and the preparation of some simpf ified forms, retailers can add 50% to lffi% and more to their promotional efforts. With a little creativity, coop funds can be used to promote traffic, to establish dominance in a

department or product category, to build an image for the store, and to solicit new business

from the commercial and industrial market. Most independent retailers do not realize just how much coop advertising is available to them. I find that the individual who calls on the retailer, while very knowledgeable about products and pricing, doesn't always know about the manufacturer's collateral materials. Experienced retailers have learned that the first

response is not always the most accurate response about the availabiJity of funds. Some-

times it takes direct contact with the factory to uncover it all. It's worth the effoft, because if there are dollars there, and you don't use them.. your competitor will

aec|illw vlce peedeld asT He NATIONAL lumber dealers I sociation has completed the produc-

tion of an in-depth "Selling Skills and Customer Relations" video cassette training program. The package of train-

ing materials contains over two hours of video instruction in nine lessons on 3-l/2 inch VHS tapes, five student workbooks and a leader's guide. The member price for this set of instruction materials is $395 and the nonmember price $595. Additional student workbooks are available for $8 each, and extra leader's guides cost $15 each. A

certilication test is included to be administered at the end of the training program.

The tapes leature Bill Sharp. a nationally recognized trainer. The program is designed for individual or group study' with or without a leader. Naturally, a study-group format is preferable with an instructional leader. This set-up allows the trainees to watch the training tapes,

individually complete the optional

workbook exercises and then discuss the

skills learned. The leader's guide is structured so that a local manager or

owner can act as the instructional leader.

No prior teaching or training experience is necessary lo serve as the leader. The entire program requires approximately nine hours of total instruction time, including viewing the video tapes, completing the workbook assignments and discussing each lesson. Each of the nine lessons has been structured as a complete unit. The leader's guide recommends that no more than one lesson be completed at a single sitting. However, the entire program can be completed over a short period of a few days, or it can be spaced over nine or l0 weeks. lt is suggested that the time between lessons be no more than a week.

In addition to the selling skills and customer relations tapes, the national association now has available a "New Em-

ployee Orientation" video tape. This brand new training tape is designed to give new employees, with no background in, nor knowledge of the industry, a broad overview of the types of products that are generally sold by lumber and building material dealers. The tape was created especially for employees

of independent retail dealers. Member

price is $55; non-member price is $95. All of the training materials described above may be ordered directly from our oflicc.

Architectural columns stand fast with redwood A S A SPECIALTY producr, redlll wood finds itself being used in some unusual ways, including as col-

umns on porches, porticos, arcades and colonnades.

In addition to being sold for use in new construction, redwood columns

have become a profitable replace-

ment market for some building products suppliers. Many older homes and buildings utilized columns crafted from local woods which have not been as durable as redwood. These are now in need of replacement. A third market for redwood columns is developing with the trend to use columns for decorative interior applications. Hartmann-Sanders Co.: column

division, Atlanta, Ga., has been

crafting columns for almost a cen-

tury and is considered the largest

manufacturer that exclusively uses clear heart redwood in columns which are considered authentic in

architectural design. They earn this designation by basing the designs of their standard columns on propor-

tions of the Ancient Orders of Architecture. Dating back to the

Greeks and Romans, these include

Tuscan, Doric, lonic, and Corinthian Caps, bases and plinths as well are

exterior columns, the column shaft is formed on nominal four inch wide slaves. Each stave has a patented interlocking joint configuration in addition to being tapered. Proper taper is important to achieve uniform thickness throughout the shaft length. The staves are glued, interlocked and kept under pressure for a minimum of l2 hours.
