Here's the bell for round 2
IIHE ongoing fight over the flood of Canadian I softwood lumber into the United States has moved beyond the opening round probings into some serious sparring. The battle over imports has all the makings of a bruising barroom brawl.
There is much at stake for both sides. The U.S. market is a rich one for the Canadians; a loss or major decrease in its size would have a major impact on their industry. On this side of the border, the Canadian competition is blamed for mill closures, lowered prices and profits and diminishing markets for U.S. wood. Many here see disaster if the situation is allowed to continue unchanged. The imports now account for one-third of the total U.S. market - some say more - and it is a rare part of the country that has not felt the effect of the massive Canadian shipments.
Our domestic timber industry fought a losing
DAVID CUTLER publisher
battle in 1982-1983 as it sought countervailing duties on Canadian imports from the U.S. lnternational Trade Commission. It was lost on legal issues, most agree. The present contest will be political.
A committee of major U.S. manufacturers has assembled a war chest, hired lawyers and is seeking a regulatory approach such as duties, antidumping measures or similar restraints such as those achieved by the beleaguered steel and auto industries in recent years.
In addition to industry actions on both sides of the border, each government has become involved. Recent talks sponsored by the Canadian government in their capital at Ottawa brought together representatives of both sides as a fnst step to finding a solution agreeable to all.
It is a complex and emotiond fight. We do not look for either an qrsy or an early conclusion.

tunity to make their customers aware of unusual and effective uses of the product in building.
For example, the photograph above would be an excellent one to show to builders or individuals who are planning their own homes.
In most contemporary homes the roof is merely a roof, but it can be a dramatic repetition of the redwood used elsewhere in the structure. In this Mercer Island, Wa., home, the shingles are laid on two different planes instead of the usual single plane. Each plane is then outlined in redwood select knotty thick butt bevel siding.
The distinctive borders are created by placing redwood select knotty siding with the butt at the front edge. In addition, overhang shingles are laid over soffits of 2x3 redwood construction common.
The innovative roof detail is a testimony to the beauty and elegance of the redwood which is a common denominator in unifying interior, exteri-

Clear vertical grain bevel siding is well suited to the semi-wooded hilltop site. In addition, it features a unique combin-
ation of natural attributes such as insulation values, durability, resistance to warping, twisting and checking.
Treated with a semi-transparent stain, redwood will retain its natural beauty and warmth of color through the years with minimal owner maintenance required. Inside as well as outside, redwood adds beauty to the home as well as practicality.
Dealers who become proponents of redwood will find ample opportunity to suggest the material for a variety of uses, both by professionals and d-iyers. They also can be confident of the quality of the material when they convince customers that they should specify redwood for their homes or other projects.

continue to be available commercially? What will the product mix and volume be?
Since we cannot harvest the same trees over and over, a change was bound to come. The generation transition has brought about two distinct changes in the redwood lumber product. Because the sapwood ring is about the same thickness in both old and new generation trees, the proportion of sapwood to heartwood is greater. Heartwood exists in young growth trees, but in lesser proportions. By the same token, a heavier percentage of the increased sapwood will fall into garden and construction grades.
The second major change is in the proportion of knotty grades. In the past, the proportion has been about 6090 upper grades and 4090 knot<ontaining grades. As the transition progresses, this ratio will gradually change to about 2590 upper grades and 7590 knotty grades.
Neither of these changes is having as great an impact on the end use market as fust glance might indicate. We have discovered that in the past we had a tendency to "overuse" the upper grades of redwood-especially heartwood-mostly because it was readily available. Coincidental with the changing resource, there has been a definite market shift in favor of garden and construction grades.
Even knottygades havetaken on a new focus, op€ning up exciting vistas of end use versatility. Because the trees harvested are younger, the knots tend to be smaller and tighter. For the first time a sizable volume of the rustic knotty grades is ideally suited for exterior siding and trim, and interior paneling, not to mention outdoor uses such as decks, fences, gazebos, and trellises.
In the projected grade mix total, the siding and paneling volume availability is just about the same as in the past. The difference is the addition of a highly attractive, affordable, rustic, tight knotted product comparable to
what pine and cedar have had available for many years. This new grade srtegory offers the end use possibili ties of architectural finish grades with the physical characteristics and cost of garden grades.
Select knotty will occupy a significant place in the future. Properly dried, with attractive rustic knots, this grade is rapidly gaining popularity as an exterior siding on custom, tract and manufactured homes as well as showing geat potential for interior uses.
Another plus in the new grade mix, as defined by the resource, is a significant increase in gardan grades, which in recent years have continued to experience a growing demand. This is possible because total redwood output will be increasing significantly in the years ahead.
For the better part of the past two decades, conservationists have worried that the redwoods were endangered, and lumbermen have worried that supplies of this important wood would diminish. Contrary to popular belief, the redwood forests today cover approximately 1,70,000 acres, just as they did over ZX) years ago

SRebuilding a redwood tradition in Alabama
tltHEN Winthrop Hallett III
UU surveved the burned-out wreckage of his entire main warehouse and office operation in Mobile, Al., after a disastrous fire on August 26,1983, his first thought was quite naturally of loss and despair.
But Hallett's second thought was that he knew he'd rebuild. He had too much to lose to let a fire destroY not only his plant and his valuable redwood and cedar inventory, but, more importantly, a three-generation reputation for quality, service and dependability for which Hallett Building Mat-

erials has been known for over 65 y€ars.
As the smoke cleared, Win Hdlett realized that the disaster of complete loss could be the challange for new gains. "I saw an opportunity for a new plant that would opefate more efficiently," he says, "and be more adaptable to new circumstances in the marketplace."
Eleven months after the fire, Hdlett Building Materials opened in a new plant at nearby Semmes completelY re-stocked with the redwood, cedar and Douglas fir products for which

the company has come to be known. Hallett was back in business with a plant that was a showplace demonstrating the products he markets, and customers were waiting for him.
"We feel that the Gulf Coast area is a natural market for the beauty and durability of redwood," says Hallett. "We specialize in siding, paneling and trim products. We buy only the best and sell at competitive prices, and we do everylhing we can to help develop
dealers who understand this concept."
Hallett, who markets redwood successfully in southern Alabama, eastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and northwestern Florida, brought redwood into the business shortly after he took over following the death of his father in 1968. He put a Ereat deal of time and money into making his customers aware of the advantages of the product.
"We spent literally thousands of dollars on literature and training of dealer personnel, including sales aids, booklets and banners as well as clinics
and co-op advertising. We put together slide presentations for homebuilder groups in our area explaining why redwood is a better value than other species and illustrating proper application techniques. Our objective was, and still is, to give the dealers all the ammunition possible to sell the product once they put it in stock."
"With the help of the California Redwood Association," Hallett continues, "we put on seminars for dealers and architects, including boiled shrimp and crab claw feeds, and we had fun doing it. We still make mailings on a regular basis to architects and builders throughout the sales area as well as monthly promotional mailings to all of our customers and selected architects and designers."
Hallett's aggressive strategy worked, and the redwood reputation he created survived the 1983 fire. "Our redwood sales last year were 4890 over the previous year, and we hope to improve on that in 1985."
It's safe to say that the Hallett Building Materials tradition, started two generations ago in 1917, is alive and well as it enters its 68th year in the capable hands of Winthrop Hallett III.

Advertising can help you sell redwood
AlJ3:il:',Xo':l:ii,':f,l'#i; you sell more redwood.
Ads for newspapers, radio and tv are easy to create if you follow a few simple rules. In addition, there is a lot of help available to you. Redwood manufacturers and distributors have special promotion kits which contain ideas for ads including repro art, headlines, selling themes, decorative borders and end use illustrations as well as directions for putting it all together. Newspapers maintain people on their staffs capable of helping you to plan and execute an ad.
Art board or slides for tv advertising and sample radio scripts are included in some manufacturers' advertising kits. Radio and tv station advertising departments have help available too.
The most effective ads usually have seven attention grabbing elements.
(l) A headline proclaiming a catchy promotion such as a truckload sale or an 8 hour sale.
(2) A listing of redwood grades and patterns available.
(3) Prices
(4) End use illustrations showing decks, fences, etc.
(5) A coupon offer for redwood literature and building plans or an invitation to a redwood clinic, or both, to build store traffic.
(6) Prominent identification of the dealer and his location.
(7) Tie in promotion of related items such as concrete, stain, outdoor furniture.
Choice of media is important to the success of an advertisement. Local media within the major trading area of the retail outlet should carry heavy advertising for a promotion. An advertising barrage using all available media can capture more customers than a weak half-hearted attempt.
Organization of the special sales events to be advertised is equally important. Weekend, truckload and doit-yourself selling themes are popular for redwood. The more innovative the promotion, the more sales success.
(2) Stock Available
(3) attd Prices
(4) End Use
Special redwood sales promotion events can be tied into deck contests, deck building clinics, seminars on building outdoor furniture or play equipment for children. Special clinics or literature can emphasize the use of redwood for remodeling or new building as both exterior siding and interior paneling.
Timing is another important factor. Redwood sales promotions should be emphasized during the time of the year when homeowners are thinking about adding amenities to their homes.
Regardless of approach, dealers must promote and advertise to sell.
(4) Suggested End Use
Market opportunities are there for those who use all available tools to gain their share.

Wrapping up convenience, protection and profit all in one unit.
f n the lumber markets of today a I vitally significant contribution to profit can be made through inventory control and protection of valuable inventory investment from mill to retail yard or the ultimate job site. Sim-Pak unit packaging on redwood lumber has been developed by Simpson in response to these needs.
Convenience
Sim-Pak units are designed in size, shape, and weight to accommodate forklift handling in single or multi-unit combinations. Both loading and unloading of trucks and rail cars are easier and faster with compact, high integrity units assembled with precision pressure strapping equipment at the mill. Mixed units of Architectural Finish grades and p?tterns are readily combined in the sdme shipment.
Protection
Smaller, lighter, protectively wrapped units, each containing '1,200 or 2,400 b.f. of Architectural Finish grades in random lengths are easy to handle, reducing damage in yard handling and transit. All units are totally wrapped in a combination of heavy duty cardboard and durable 6 mil poly coated paper. Designed to facilitate unit selling, the packaging provides improved protection from mill to market.
Profit
With Sim-Pak random units you can order what you need when you need it and sell evefihing you order without throwing away profits in damaged stock. And since time is money, the savings in time in loading, unloading, handling and re-tallying plus the savings
in actual shipping time all contribute very directly to your profits.
Ask about the Sim-Pak package deal for profit on your next redwood order. Simpson Timber Company, California Operations, P.O. DrawerV, Arcata, CA 95s21.

IRECENTLY sat at the National Home I Center show advisory board meeting with Bernie Marcus, founder and ceo of the Home Depot chain. We were discussing the possibility of the show offering a bus tour of home centers in Atlanta (site of the 1985 National Home Center Show). Bernie pleaded "Not the weekend! Please do not bring a busload of distributors and dealers to our stores on the weekend or our people will be very unfriendly."
I quipped back, "Bernie, I visited your stores in all your markets and your people don't know how to be unfriendlY."
Bernie smiled and said, "We'll train 'em,"
Of course we won't Plan anY weekend bus tours. but Bernie Marcus is right. It would take retraining to get his people to be unfriendly.
More than anything else, I think one
element in Home Depot's formula that imitators have failed to copy is the attitude of the store's people. It was the same in every Home Depot I visited in Orlando, Tampa, New Orleans, and Phoenix. In each store the help was very visible, very knowledgeable, very friendly and most important, very enthusiastic.
I think it's the enthusiasm that impressed me the most. I've seen nothing like it anywhere else in the home center industry. Let's face it; knowledge can be taught. Friendliness can be mandated. But enthusiasm has to show through at the pre-employment interview and Home Depot has found a way to recognize it and nurture it. Maybe The Home Depot has to offer better-than-average salaries to attract enthusiastic people but it appears to have a fast payback.
Typically, at other retailers, when a salesperson asks a customer if they can help they almost telegraph a fear that the customer will say "Yes." Not so at Home Depot. The floor people aggressively, but, politely seek out customers to help.
They project an aura of confidence but not superiority. lt's refreshing.
I think it's this sincere enthusiasm that makes the Home Depot shoPPer feel good about buying and makes them want to come back again. Others may mimic the Home Depot's merchandise mix, store layout, advertising format, price gu:uantees, orange stenciled signs, and visual merchandising but, without the employee enthusiasm, it all adds up to a near miss!

Dean Lumber Co. Expanding
Dean Lumber Co., a diversified forest products concern based in Gilmer, Tx., is now operating a distribution center in Dallas, Tx., at the Fry Wholesale Lumber Co. facility which they bought a year ago and continue to operate under that name. Fry is managed by Ron Hilliard and sells southern pine as well as a wide range of pressure treated lumber.
In other expansions, Dean is remodeling its Gilmer mill to cut more and longer timbers. Previously restricted to 16 ft., the mill will cut timbers up to 20 ft. when remodeling is complete.
They are building a new dry kiln and remodeling two existing dry kilns, which are being converted to steam operation to take advantage of the company's newly constructed wood fired steam boiler. A co-generation electric plant is also being built. It will supply 75s/o of their electricity needs.
Dean's forestry operation in the company's timberlands has put a Morbark chip harvester into operation for on-site chipping as part of their timber harvesting.
A true believer in the pressure treated wood products produced and sold by his family company, Steve Dean is currently building a new home of Dricon fire retardant treated wood. One of six such promotional homes in the United States, part of a Koppers Co. program, the home promises to save up to 5090 in fire insurance costs. It is estimated that over a fire year period, the saving in premium costs over those for a brick veneer home will more than pay for the additional cost of the treated lumber.
The six Dricon homes are expected to be featured in a high visibility publicity campaign scheduled for later this year.

How you can save on delivery costs G
Queslions on deliverl costs? Send them to this magazine at 4500 Campus Dr., Suite 480, NewPort Beach, Ca. 92660. Wally LYnch will answer them in future issues. This is your chance to take advantage of his expertise in cutting your delivery costs.
EnT'"I'i:Hf .::#f'?.lillfi :
al duties as fork lift operators, etc.
The reasons are many, but the most important from an economic standpoint is cost. When a driver doesn't drive, the truck is idle and not productive. The more a fully loaded truck is driven, the more effectively the company's vehicles are profitably completing delivered sales.
The major down time for the driver should be unloading at the job site and reJoading in the yard. Neither function should take, on an average, more than 15 minutes to execute. (Hand placement of shingles, wallboard, etc. at the job site are an exception to this.) In general, a driver won't have much trouble off loading in 15 minutes per stop.
In order to insure productivity from drivers and trucks, the dispatcher must be supported by a company policy which generates timely order picking, staging and preJoading. This practice is not difficult, but it requires discipline and a policy set by management. An official position (ike orders received in the morning will be delivered in the afternoon and orders received in the afternoon will be delivered the morning of the next working day) will allow yard people to pull, stage and preload in an orderly fashion.
More important, it should never take more than 15 minutes to load a truck once it is spotted along side a pre-staged load. Our company has run numerous evaluations on how many stops one man can pull, preJoad and stage per eight hour shift. While it varies slightly from study to study, it is fairly consistent that on average one man can process one stop every 15 minutes.
Telling people within the company how
delivery is to be handled is not difficult and it does have a definite haring on their effectiveness in serving the customer. It is just as important to tell your customers what they may expect from your delivery service. In short, an external delivery policy posed for all to see and use as a guide to when and what they can expect is most important. A simple sign listing policies (similar to those below) will do the job.
o Delivery is free within a certain radius Monday - Friday (except holidays).
o Hand or machine placement of shingles & wallboard by quote.
r Orders received by l0 a.m. are delivered in the afternoon. After l0 a.m. orders are delivered in morning of the next working day or later if sPecified.
o Back orden will be substituted where possible or cancelled.

Utility Tautliner'" Savei Ajayem Lumber SzsO aWaek
"No more tarps rtarping crews or overtime."
The Ajayem Lumber Company, founded in 1944 and headquartered in Walden, NY mills and ships more than'100 million board feet of lumber up and down the Eastern seaboard and as far inland as Ohio. The fleet travels more than 1.6 million miles annually.
The Problem?
Tarping.
"Not only is tarping time-consumingl' explains Aaron Modansky, president of the family-owned company, "but that downtime translates into lost dollars. In addition, tarping is dangerous. The driver has to climb up on the load, position the tarp and tie-downs, and in wet, icy weather', it's hazardousl'
"We ship our own goodsj'says Modansky, "and our customers will not accept them if they are not clean, dry and free from mud and dirt. Again, this translates into lost dollars for our company if the load arrives weather-damagedi'
The Solution?
The Utility Tautliner'". This revo-
lutionary trailer converts from a flatbed to a fully enclosed van in a matter of minutes. The unioue loadbearing curtains slide open and shut, allowing lumber to be sideloaded fast and efficiently. Then the load-bearing, rip-stop, cross-linked, PVC-coated polyester curtains shul tight to keep the load as dry and clean as a conventional dry freight van.
"Our direct savings are 9150 a dayl' Modansky continues. "Tarps don't have to be replaced every four months, and a set of tarps costs about $750. In addition, there is no downtime due to accidents; insurance and workman's compensation are reduced; and there is no damage to product when it is loaded, even in the wettest weatherl'
"l figure that the Utility Taufliners., will pay for themselves in one year and will reduce operating expenses 20o/o each year after thatl'
The Results?
Ajayem Lumber now runs 29 Utility
Tautliners'". Modansky says it has changed their image in the marketplace. "Our customers are so impressed by these new trailers that when they place an order, some of them now say, "lf you don't ship it in a Utility Tautliner, don't bother to .send it!"
The Tautliner', by Utility. lt can be the answer to your problems too. Call 800-824-45'14 for more information or for the location of the Utility dealer nearest you.

Elms share similar qualities
E LM TREES are found all over Ethe northern hemisphere with the white elm (Ulmus omericana) in the eastern half of the United States and Canada and the rock elm (Ulmus thomasi) in the eastern regions of both countries. The English, Dutch and wych elm of Europe as well as the nire from Japan also are important.
As a wood, elm has a characteristic appearance. The growth ring figure is prominent with coarse texture and an often irregular grain. The wood is pale brown, sometimes with a reddish tint, although wych elm has a greenish cast. The white elm timber tends to resemble English elm with a straighter grain. The wide sapwood is pale, but the heartwood is the typical elm brown with a reddish tinge.
Rock elm which has no distinction between sapwood and heartwood is light brown. With a straight grain, it has a finer texture and a greater strength and density than the whire elm. It averages about 49 pounds per foot in the seasoned condition as compared to 38 pounds per foot for the white elm.
White elm seasons readily with
medium shrinkage while the rock elm is inclined to check and twist with high shrinkage. Generally, elm is not particularly strong nor stable.
All elm is classified as non-durable, subject to fungal attack. It does not take preservatives readily. However, the wood has a long life in

waterlogged conditions. It is good for structural uses where it is permanently wet. The famous Rialto structure in Venice is said to stand on elm piles. Rock elm has been a long time favorite for dock and wharf constructions, ships' fenders, bent frames of small boats, stringer, rubbing strips and belting. Its use in boat building has declined because of its susceptibility to decay.
Rock elm is fairly hard to work by hand but is satisfactory in machining, finishing clean and smooth. It has good nailing and screwing properties and takes stain, varnish, paint and polish well. White elm works in a similar fashion except for being inclined to a woolly sawn surface. Both woods are good for steam bending. White elm is used extensively in both the U.S. and Canada in the slack cooperage industry for staves, heading and hoops. It dso is used as veneer for cheese boxes and other veneer products. Some is used for furniture, caskets and agricultural machinery. It is frequently used as a substitute for rock elm dthough it is not as tough or shock resistant.

Redwood: quality sells
EEDWOOD'S sales appeal can flbe summed up in one word: "quality." There is always a demand for quality. Redwood's reputation for quality is founded on decades of building experience. Redwood has performance characteristics not available in other woods-even woods treated with chemicals. No other wood provides the longJasting beauty of redwood. This includes resistance to shrinking, warping and checking. Redwood takes finishes better than most other woods. As a result, decks, fences and shelters made from redwood simply look better than projects made from other woods and they continue to look better 10, 15 and 20 years after construction.
Redwood is the perfect wood for outdoor use. Decks, trellising, planters, spa environments, benches and seats of redwood all add special ac-
cents to outdoor living areas. In addition, they are easy to care for with little or no maintenance required year after year.
Fences, too, are more handsome and practical when constructed of

redwood. Fence posts, fence rails and fence-boards make the job of fence construction easier for the do-it-yourselfer or professional. Again, durability comes with good looks. Redwood fences withstand weather extremes season after season.
You can recommend redwood to your quality conscious builders and do-it-yourselfers with the confidence that there will be no customer callbacks because redwood lives up to its promises. And when you think about it, redwood doesn't cost much more than ordinary wood for you or your customers. Plus, you'll get top price because redwood won't warp, split or splinter in the yard like other woods. Your customer is purchasing a quality product. Quality has its own dividends. It looks better and keeps its good looks longer. Who says you can't buy happiness?

old, overmature stands are in a sense standing in storage. Young redwood stands grow at an average rate of 1,000 board feet per acre per Year.
The redwood forest is capable of growing more board feet per acre per year than any other softwood timber type in the country. In addition to reproducing naturally from seed as well as from prolific sprouting of the stumps left after harvest, new redwood forests are assured as the result
of hand planting redwood seedlings. As evidence of a commitment to the future of redwood, within the last five years, Simpson has exPended over $20 million for harvestable resources and additional land on which to grow more trees. ManY of these trees will not be harvested in our lifetime, but they assure that redwood is here to stay, backed by the resource necessary to make it a growing reality in your proftt Picture.
