lmproving Customer Satisfaction with Wood Siding Products

1|r1NE of the most serious Problems of Vpaint failure and customer dissatisfaction of wood siding is blistering and peeling of the coating. This usually involves a failure at the wood-paint interface and can result in damage to the substrate as well as difficult and cos0y refinishing.

Studles by the US. Forest Produc'ts research department show that even mlntnal weatherlng of unprotected sid' Ing can dramatlcally decrease the abili' ty ofa coating to bond to wood. In fact even a period of four to 16 weeks (common on job sites) can decrease the ability of paint adhesion by 5OVo.

Short-term exposure of unprotected siding on the job site can dramatically decrease the ability of painh or primers to to adhere to the siding. In most cases this will cause premature coat failure and not only create an unhappy consumer, but can result in lost dollar profits as a result of repainting the exterior siding.

In the conclusion of the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory study they stated, "adhesion of acrylic latex primers to wood was significantly reduced after the wood had weathered four to eight weeks before painting. This reduction in adhesion will probably be reflected in reduced Paint performance." They go on to state, "We sbongly recommend that any unProtected wood not be allowed to weather for more than four weeks."

Many homeowners, contractors and builders are now prefinishing their siding before it ever arrives at the job site' Prefinishing allows the wood to be quality cbecked and tbe moisture content controlled before it is coated. Because the siding is prefinished or pre-primed before it leaves the plant it is not exposed to any weathering or photodegradation, greatly increasing the longevity of the coating and finished product.

OLYMPIC Stains. PPG Industries is the pioneer in the process of machine application and has been providing a consistent quality process and product for over 30 years. According to Steve Wrigbt, professional stain & coatings manager for PPG, "We understand the importance of protecting the substrate as soon as possible, before weathering actually starts. Our factory finishing Process with our authorized operators simply offers the best protection available ensuring a longJasting, maintenance-free coating."

The actual coating Process itself ensures a quality job as the siding in many cases is actually preheated before coating to ensur€ maximum coating adhesion. It is then coated with high speed rcvolving brushes !o ensur€ a smooth finish. At that point it is dried and cured under ideal conditions and packaged for shipment to the job site.

Once at the job site it is readY to be installed regardless of weather and minimLes costly painter callbacks, additional scaffolding and clean-up associated with onsite finishing. Once the siding is installed tbe property has instant curb appeal and is ready to be marketed.

OLYMPIC operators can prefinish lumber or plywood including trim and soffit materials in any width up to 50 inches and in any thickness from 3/8" to 6". Material can be offered in a wide variety of semi-transparent or solid colors in oil stains. Authorized Machinecoat operators can also offer Olympic's exclusive Machinecoat which includes a 15 year warranty.
