The war against wood use

There is universal agreement in this business that the environmencalists are winning the war against wood use. Everyone agrees something must be done to protect our interests. Often there is agreement on the methods required to defend ourselves. Scores of small organizations daily fight the good fight. They do their best. And that is exactly the problem.

Our existing organizations are too small, too broke and too narrowly focused. They aren't coordinated with one another's efforts. What's required to effectively rebuff the enviros and salvage what remains of our country's resources is to have an organization large and etTective enough

tio get the job done. Despite the good efforts of many, lhis business still lacks an umbrella group with the lnow-how and finances to correct public opinion and achieve sensible governmental and judicial decisions on using our wood resources. Our indusry's leaders and their associations and groups have so far failed to create and fund a broad-based organization to do the job needed. Small groups, grass roots workers and the like all perfonn a vital role and we sincerely salute them. But without the firepower of an all industry effort, we'll continue to win the occasional skirmish, but too few of the big battles and, we're afraid, the war itself.

We need to collectively ask our top people to get involved and create the champion to win our war. The rest of us have been doing our best. It's not enough. Now we have to do what's required.

For pressure-treated wood thafs kilndded after treatment, call Dean Lumber Co.

The gentle conditioning of our steam dry kilns yields exceptional products such as Dean Deck, Dricon@ fire retardant treated wood, 0utdooro wood, Wolmanizedo Extra'" lumber, and treated specialties.

lmproving Customer Satisfaction with Wood Siding Products

1|r1NE of the most serious Problems of Vpaint failure and customer dissatisfaction of wood siding is blistering and peeling of the coating. This usually involves a failure at the wood-paint interface and can result in damage to the substrate as well as difficult and cos0y refinishing.

Studles by the US. Forest Produc'ts research department show that even mlntnal weatherlng of unprotected sid' Ing can dramatlcally decrease the abili' ty ofa coating to bond to wood. In fact even a period of four to 16 weeks (common on job sites) can decrease the ability of paint adhesion by 5OVo.

Short-term exposure of unprotected siding on the job site can dramatically decrease the ability of painh or primers to to adhere to the siding. In most cases this will cause premature coat failure and not only create an unhappy consumer, but can result in lost dollar profits as a result of repainting the exterior siding.

In the conclusion of the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory study they stated, "adhesion of acrylic latex primers to wood was significantly reduced after the wood had weathered four to eight weeks before painting. This reduction in adhesion will probably be reflected in reduced Paint performance." They go on to state, "We sbongly recommend that any unProtected wood not be allowed to weather for more than four weeks."

Many homeowners, contractors and builders are now prefinishing their siding before it ever arrives at the job site' Prefinishing allows the wood to be quality cbecked and tbe moisture content controlled before it is coated. Because the siding is prefinished or pre-primed before it leaves the plant it is not exposed to any weathering or photodegradation, greatly increasing the longevity of the coating and finished product.

OLYMPIC Stains. PPG Industries is the pioneer in the process of machine application and has been providing a consistent quality process and product for over 30 years. According to Steve Wrigbt, professional stain & coatings manager for PPG, "We understand the importance of protecting the substrate as soon as possible, before weathering actually starts. Our factory finishing Process with our authorized operators simply offers the best protection available ensuring a longJasting, maintenance-free coating."

The actual coating Process itself ensures a quality job as the siding in many cases is actually preheated before coating to ensur€ maximum coating adhesion. It is then coated with high speed rcvolving brushes !o ensur€ a smooth finish. At that

point it is dried and cured under ideal conditions and packaged for shipment to the job site.

Once at the job site it is readY to be installed regardless of weather and minimLes costly painter callbacks, additional scaffolding and clean-up associated with onsite finishing. Once the siding is installed tbe property has instant curb appeal and is ready to be marketed.

OLYMPIC operators can prefinish lumber or plywood including trim and soffit materials in any width up to 50 inches and in any thickness from 3/8" to 6". Material can be offered in a wide variety of semi-transparent or solid colors in oil stains. Authorized Machinecoat operators can also offer Olympic's exclusive Machinecoat which includes a 15 year warranty.

Cedar sellers new quality push

aIUALITY and service are buzzwords of the back-toldtrbasics '90s and Western Red Cedar Lumber NFociation is trying to be right on fte mark.

"That's what all of our programs, including those for retail dealers, are all about," says Ken McClelland, WRCLA executive director in the association's Vancouver, B.C., head office.

"Our members are committed to producing quality cedar products and sunding behind them with service. To spread this message nationwide we have opened a national advisory service, Super Cedar Service," he says. ',We want to communicate and share information about cedar

This will be updated on a regular basis as new WRCLA tides are published. A LTHOUGH cedar Producing -dmembers of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association see no immediate end to the tight cedar log supply, they expect 1993 production levels to remain about the sane as last year's 900 million board feet.

Much of the western red cedar lumber in the U.S. market comes from British Colunrbia which faces a fiber supply crunch on several fronts, including a heavy winter snow Pack and planned reductions in the allowable cut an4ounced by the B.C. provincial golvernment. U.S. cedar producers, who supply aboutZl%o of. the cedar used in this countrY, are experiencing their own environmental demands and shortfalls.

Statistics prepared by the B.C. Council of Forest Industries and the Western Wood Products Association, Portland, Or., project cedar log volumes remaining steady, but lower, through 2005. U.S. coastal production is expected to drop from a 198690 level of 2.91million cubic meters to 2.50 by 1995 and hold through 2005. For the same Period, U.S. inland production is anticipated to decline from .93 million cubic meters to .77. British Columbia coastal production will fall ftom 1986-90's 6.85 million cubic meters to 6.30 in 1995, 6.15, 2000, and 6.00, 2005, while interior production of 1.74 (19861990) will hold at 1.65 until2005.

limited areas in the U.S. will feel the same availability pinch. Froduction between 1986 and 1990 averaged 1.14 million cubic meters, but is due to drop to .88 million cubic meters through 2005. This cedar is widelY used in interior applications such as paneling.

While supply side shortages have caused some Price fluctuations, "going back to the 1972 dollars and in temrs of buying power, cedar is still a good value," WRCLA executive director Ken McClelland notes. He expects 1993 shipments to be about the same as1992.

As well as appealing to the environmentally green buyers, "cedar is erching out a brand of consumers that wants an original home, one that is not just a house, but a home with natural character," McClelland says. Moving western red cedar from a commodity to a sPecialtY Product price-wise has been the aim of the industry, and the association is attempting to do this on several fronts, including opening two U.S. offices, one in Chicago and a second in the Atlanta, Ga., are4 which offer consumers, from do-it-yourselfers to architects, infonnation on cedar's special qualities and uses.

Cedar producers, mindful that the consumer is looking for quality and pre-finished products, are attempting to meet both needs by providing items such as pre-stained siding. In order to supply a wider range of home and garden cedar products, suppliers are either acquiring a partial interest in smaller specialty or value added plants or forging marketing agreements with mills that can custom-cut smaller orders, McClelland explains.

Bob Thompson, MacMillan Bloedel's North American cedar distribution manager, says cedar "has always been a specialty product but has not been priced that way." Tight log supplies, reduced Production capacity, plus increasing consumer recognition of cedar's special qualities "should continue to remove cedar

With the housing market imProving and looking for quality products with natural characteristics, western red cedar is well placed to capitalize on its status as a star Performer among western woods, McClelland adds.

WRCLA represents 16 PrimarY and secondary cedar manufacfirrers in western Canada and northwestern United States. Members, who are large integrated forest products companies as well as independent operators and specialty remanufacturers, produce a wide range of exterior sidings and deckings as well as interior paneling and many specialty items. Become a fence specialist with innovative products

I\TEW developmenrs are rurning llcommodity fencing into a specialty product. Retailers who have expanded beyond cedar, redwood and treated posts and boards are welcoming higher margins and more d-i-y customers.

With pre-assembled fence panels and gateS, even the most inexperienced do-it-yourselfer can build a fence. a dealer as a fence specialist. Specialty structural fasteners which simplify fence construction should be companion products to specialty fencing. They are best cross merchandised in the fencing section along with lag screws, hinges, latches and locks suitable for gates. Stains, paints and water protection products used for fences should be included to give the impression of a specialty fencing department.

Harsch at Heritage Fen@, a vinyl fencing manufacturer. In other words, zero maintenance.

Real Wood Products.

Pre-assembled fence panels have easy-to-sell benefits. D-i-y-ers are willing !o pay extra for the time saved and the convenience of eliminating sawing, putting up panels instead of individual boards, and the ease of installing a pre-built gate. A choice of woods, cedar, pressure Eeated or KD western whitewood, as well as the availability of machine pre-staining or pre-painting are additional sales points that assure higher margins.

Gerry Ferguson and her husband wanted t;o give new life to an Atlantic Beach, Fl., beach front cottage, but Kavanaugh could have recommended cypress for ttre finest mansion being built in Jacksonville. Cypress is equally at home in a fomml or informal setting.

The Fergusons were sold on cypress when they saw the store's display. 'A good display really makes a difference," she commented. "Seeing all the different grades lets you choose between making cypress formal or informal. Cypress has a certain appeal and wood gives life as nothing else does."

"Its appearance, versatility and availability are Pafl of that appeal," says Susan Regan, executive vice President of the Southem Cypress Manufacturers Association.

Professionals who use cypress are enthusiastic about its qualities. "Cypress is the best product I know of," acknowledges Bob Frohwein, Frohwein Construction,. Inc., Atlantic Beach. He uses mainly

select grades and finds cypress to be more available than other species and truly price competitive.

Luther Mclendon, an interior trim carpenter with L&S Consrucdon, Jacksonville, agrees, "It has few knots and good color and, compared to a comparable pine, it's less expensive."

Cypress is an architectural woodwork favorite because it's stable, has good nail holding characteristics, doesn't split when nailed, glues very easily, is decay resistant and mills well, Kavanaugh adds. These characteristics make cypress ideal for mantels, mouldings, hand rails and other fine architectual woodwork.

"That's what I like about cypress," Frohwein says. "It's far superior to other species."

All three men and the Fergusons agree cypress has no equal. From a fine cypress tongue and groove ceiling with exposed cypress timbers and custom made cypress kitchen cabinets to a finely crafted cypress deck, the beach cottage also has no equal in their opinion.

Moulding & millwork: how to sell cold weather projects

f LJMBER and building marerials don'r sell in winter. If lJthat's your sales philosophy, you're kidding yourself. Winter is the ideal time for doing inside jobs - jobs that require millwork and moulding.

Winter offers an opportunity to promote remodeling kirchens and bathrooms, adding new cabinets, replacing interior doors, installing paneling and decorative moulding. These jobs can keep remodeling crews working when it's cold and wet or occupy homeowners housebound by rain, snow and freezing weather.

Dealers reporting steady sales of millwork, moulding and similar items during the winter months are not necessarily located in areas with mild climates. Interior projects are equally popular during the winter in less temperate regions. Replacing kitchen cabinets, adding paneling or retiling ceilings are cold weather jobs, one dealer reports. He says they help to smooth out the winter drop-off.

A series of weekly clinics offering help in a variety of projects utilizing millwork and moulding is an excellent way to attract attention and customers. Focusing on

and moulding. Hardware, paint, wallpapea new window tteaElents, dl types of flouing and even tile or countertops are needed o complete projects. New appliances or bathroom fixnres can be additional add-ons, as arc tools to do thejobs.

Salespeople should be enthusiastic about promoting "inside" jobs. Showing a customer the newest louver, accordion or mirrored closet doors or paneled doors for halls and bedrooms or interior French doors can spark the idea of updating. Pointing out a vignette that demonstrates modemizing a kitchen or dressing up a room with chair rail or crown moulding can start ideas flowing. Ideas easily grow into sales when they are encouraged by enthusiastic salespeople and a ready source of building materials.

Advertising free kitchen design service or promoting a special on kirchen cabinets with copy pointing out the advantages of working inside in winter is another way to build interest for indoor jobs.

Before you begin any promotion, it is advisable to have sufficient inventory of moulding and millwork on hand or be prepared to replenish stock in a very short time. Analyzing your customer base can help you to detemrine your product mix - paint grade, hardwood, fingerjoint, southern pine, prefinished or extruded moulding. ITIOUR yard can be a Pain finanI cially and physically without the proper policies and attitudes towards productivity and safety. And especially for the yard manager, there are special devices out there to eliminate timely, costly and potenrially dangerous practices.

Here's a mini-buyer's guide to some labor-saving yard equipment:

To prevent employee injury and escalating workers compensation premiurns and claims, many dealers have acquired back supports for their yard crew. Unfortunately, many are made of elastic materials that offer little support. others are too cumbersome or wide, making them hot" sweaty and uncomfortable for the wearer. After several months of uss, these girdlestyle belts often lose their shape.

Extra help around the yard

There are other devices to quicklY chop almost any kind of scrap: bands, strap, wire, seals, tubing, cable, extrusions, plastics and steel bars. The compact, manageable chunks are packed into containers for recycling and reselling. The choppers and scrap conversion systems can cut the disposal time and cost and give you more operating space.

- SweedMachinery,Inc. (800) 888-1352

Another option is eliminating the conventional steel banding all together. One synthetic fiber strapping now available offers high safety, sfength, durability, lower weight and cost, good shock absorbency and stretchability. They anach easily with buckles or a simple knot and can be removed just as quickly.

weight rack and lower engine placement provide a lower center of gravity and added stability. To avoid tipping forward, the new safety system, attached to the front axle, prevents lifting loads with the ftont wheels and legs in the up position.

A new support is made of l00Vo nylon, which neither exPands (more protection against back injury) nor contracts (so it doesn't lose its shape). And the belt is only a comfortable 5 inches wide.

Belts can be customized with reflective safety strips, D-Rings and suspenders, producing a very practical work belt. They can even be manufactured with your company's logo or packaged for marketing to do-it-yourself customers for home use.

- The LiftBelt ComPanY (800) 995-5438 or (803) 288-0461

Scrap steel banding is another potential hazard in the yard. The long, unwieldly sraps are difficult to handle, store and dispose of. The Band-Ade machine cuts steel banding into compact, easily stored slices and conveniently deposits them in a steel drum. Once messy, bulky straps are transformed into valuable scrap for easy disposal or sale.

- Indian Country, Inc. (607),167-3801

You don't have to worry about rusting, staining or comer protectors. The straps adjust to the wood's expansion. They may also be printed upon.

- CarisraP Intemational (800) 361-9466

Certain problems in the yard can also be avoided by having a forklift that can do it all. There's a new, improved lightweight material handler that copes with all terains and is portable. It attaches to the rear of a flatbed truck for quick and easy unloading at any destination. The hydrostatically-driven A counter-

Kubota diesel powered, it weighs about 3,600 pounds and lifts 4,000 to 5,000 pounds to heights of 72 to 120 inches. Extend-A-Forks and disc brakes are standard. Other models include four-wheel drive.

- Spyder (800) 231-5916

Yet another way to up yard efficiency is through improved communications. Motorola makes Pocketsized HT and MT FM two-way portable radios. The lumberyard radios are just over 6 inches high and weigh about a pound.

There are a variety of models available, with features such as broad tunable band width, programmable channel spacing, a built-in-noise canceling microphone to minimize background noise during voice transmissions, priority channel scan and Call Alert decode.

important last. Rrll out anything that can be covered on Oe sales floor and check your calendar for notes pertaining to the floor. With rhese on a clipboard, head out into the store.

Let's assume you have the following standard operating procedure for the store/yard" no matter the size. The unit is divided so every employee (including sales desk staff) has an area to cover with desk people having smaller areas. Each person is responsible for reporting out of stocks, maintaining cleanliness, replenishing warehouse goods, etc. With this method, you can determine who is Setting the job done and wbo is not. Assign yourself a different area to check each day.

Make a quick floor tour before the store opens, look for and note obvious problems. Greet the crew. If any are visiting instead of aking care of assigned areas, point out the glitches. After a few reminders, they will be getting ready for customers.

Just before opening, head for the front door. Depending on how busy openings ale, have other staff there. Greet everyone coming in. Use their name if you know it. If customers want to talk, listen. Make them feel you are genuinely glad they came into the store.

Next make a quick tour to make sure all areas are covered. No one should be in the warehouse or stockroom at this time. Now it's time for coffee and the office. Write quick notes on the glitches and warts observed on the floor and ask the secretary to get them to those responsible for the cures.

If this happens often, be less polite and more pointed.

Go to the aisle scheduled for review. Check for full end caps, well displayed and signed o grab he customer's eye. Check several sections or bins. fue the adjacencies correct? Is he merchandise displayed so Oat it is user friendly? Keep those two words in mind.

No one should have to get on his knees or slretch to reach merchandise. Signs in front or next to each item are to inform, not hide. Stock underneath. Put accessories close to categories requiring them. This is what I mean by adjacencies and user friendly.

Spend an hour or two each day on reviews (except on the busiest days when you prowl the floor) and you'll cover the floor two or three times a year. Schedule your staff to help when you are sure they know what to look for and accomplish.

Alternate between the office and floor. Check on yesterday's glitches. Ask the customers if they are being taken care of, finding what they want" happy with the service. (Be prepared for some nasty answers.) Since paperwork will take different amounts of time each day, the crew will never know when you will be out on the floor.

Story at a Glance

Ways to work smarter, not harder ... procedures to keep store operating efficienily, employees on their toes, customer servace at an all time hi9h.

If you don't have time to finish the final paperworlq put it in tomorrow's file. Tasks will rise to the top if important or become trivial and be thrown away.

Start by getting to work 30 minutes to an hour before the store/yard opens to organize the day. Plan to do the toughest paperwork first and the least

Tackle the two toughest tasks for the day, finish them and retum to the floor. If customers are waiting or wanting while the help is doing siock work, visiting or lingering in the warehouse, remind salespeople to "Please help a customer in aisle {f-."

Never make floor time look like a wirch hunt or inspection. Everything you do or say should be customer oriented and discussed as a customer function. Without making direct references to what employees need to do, you will step up the pace. Learn to discipline yourself to be productive. Never become a robot or martinef Work smarter, not harder.

Wood Treaters Confer ln D.C.

The American Wood Preserving Industry Legislative Conference March 14-17 at the Hyatt Regency, Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C., will bring together wood preservers from across the country.

Meeting personally with their elected representatives, they will have an opportunity to tell new and reelected members of Congress how curent and proposed legislation and regulations affect the industry's plants and products.

Senator Richard C. Shelby (D-Al.) will be keynote luncheon speaker. The program includes an insider briefing from an EPA official, a journalist and an environmental activist on how Washington works. T$e National Association of Manufactirrers will conduct a computer simulation game, Congressional Insight, where players must make tough political calls and try to get re+lected.

Industry groups co-sponsoring the conference include the American Wood Preservers Institute, Alabama Association of Wood Preservers, Lumber Manufacturers Association of Virginia, Southeastem Lumber Manufacturers Association, Southern Forest

Products Association, Southern Pressure Treaters Association. Texas Wood Preservers Advisory Council and Westem Wood Preservers Institute.

CCA Little Threat to Sea Life

Results are expected this spring from a study investigating the effects of CCA treated piling on marine organisms.

Funded by Hickson Corp., the research will answer questions about possible toxicity. "Marine life grows abundantly on treated wood piling," Bill Baldwin, vice president for environmental and technical services at Hickson, said. "We lnow of no hazards and hope this study, using the most scrupulous scientific procedures, will fill a research void and detennine there is no basis for concern."

Boards Rated Best Subfloor

A recent study commissioned by the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association tested the effectiveness of three different thicknesses of

plywood and oriented strandboard (OSB) as well as 314" kiln dried southern yellow pine boards as subflooring for nail installed hardwood.

Both machine driven cleats and pneumatic driven staples were used to fastm3l4'x2-ll4' srip flooring to the subfloors. The nail and staple connections to the kiln dried southern yellow pine board subfloor outperfonned the connections in all other subfloors. Results showed little difference between 3/4" plywood, 5/8" plywood and 314" OSB.

The Virginia Tech study supports the industry's long recommended 5/8" or thicker plywood or 314" kiln dried dense Group I softwood boards as preferred subfloor material for solid hardwood blind nailed flooring and adds 3/4' OSB as a suitable substrate.

Wm. Cameron & Co., Dallas, Tx., has acquired tbe assets of five OwensCorning Fiberglas distribution oenters and is negotiating for a sixth unit.

The Atlanta, Ga., Charlotte, N.C., Chicago, Il., Dallas and Fort Worth, Tx., additions to the l2S-year-old company are additional steps in a move to cover geographicatly tbe area from Arizona to Atlanta and Dallas to Chicago. Wm. Cameron and Co., now a $150 million company with 330 employees, plans to expand its product line as well as facilities. Purchase of the Owens-Corning facility in Detroit, Mi., is pending as are other acquisitions.

"We will be a strong partner with all of our suppliers," president and ceo Ron Ross pledged.

Greg Mullikin, ex-Owens-Corning Fiberglas, is the new vice president of Cameron's eastern division. Now based in Toledo, Oh., he will be moving to Atlanta.

No dollar amount was revealed for the Jan. 20 acquisition, but it is believed to be in the tens of millions of dollars. Annual sales of the distribution centers is in the $50 million ran8e.

Dallas and Fort Worth locations will be closed and consolidated with Cameron's existing units. Dallas consolidation is underway with Fort Worth due to be completed in June or July. Inventory and personnel will be relocated. All Owens-Corning employees will be retained, Ross said.

A new Chicago warehouse in the 100,000 sq. ft. range comparable to Cameron's Dallas and San Antonio facilities is due within a year.

In mid-1992 Cameron acquired Thunderbird Steel Co., Albuquerque, N.M., a leading Southwest building material disfibutor.

Grading School Program

A computer progftm designed as a tutorial for grading hardwood lumber is now available from the National Hardwood Lumber Association.

The HaLT (Hardwood Lumber Training) program is a self-taught training exercise for students, beginning lumber inspectors, lumber salespeople and office personnel. The software runs on any IBM or compatible computer with MS DOS operating system.

It grades boards in real time, from data files that contain 150 boards. Board data files were developed by measuring and cataloging the type, size and location of various defects on actual hardwood lumber, which were then recreated as data that the program interprets and explains. Users can also create their own boards. which HaLT will grade and explain.

Phantom Frelght Sult Denled

A disfict court bas dismiss€d the class action "phanlom fieigbt" lawsuit accusing 15 Canadiur manufacturers of overcbarging U.S. lumber buyers for shipping charges.

On Jan. 6, the Judge granted tbe Canadian defendants' motion to dismiss tbe case for lack of jurisdiction. The plaintiffs have filed notice that tbey will appeal, which could be a year-long prooess.

Filed in l99l by former wholesaler Rivendell Forest Products, Englewood, Co., the suit alleges the Canadian firms used undenveights, fr€ight prepay discounts, open-end incentives, confidential shipping rat€ contracts and delivered-only pricing to cbarge extra freight. Damages sought are estimated at as high as $2 billion.

Lumber Composite Available

Lumber distribuor Plunkett-Webster, Inc., Apex, N.C., is now socking a wood polymer composite as a lumber substitute in non-structural uses.

The distributor recently sold its first order of Timbrex, a composite made with 100% recycled wood and plastic without toxic preservatives, to a retailer.

Said not to split, chip, rot, warp, splinter or check, it's been used for decks, docks, bulkheads, guardrails, fencing, sign posts, picnic tables, benches, playground equipment, industrial flooring and exterior trim.

Their farget customers are building supply dealen and municipalities.

"It's a little bit more expensive than wood," admitted Calvin Biddex, lumber sales manger, PlunkettWebster. "But the average deck would only cost about $200 more."

To many homeowners, it might be worth it. Manufacturer Mobil Chemical says it resists moisture, solvents, insects, UV rays and salt water. It looks like wood, but has superior fastener retention, an ever-smooth. paintable surface, low thermal expansion and contraction and no need for protective sealants. Products come in a wide range of profiles and lengths.

Mobil's Composite Products Division is working on a version for structural use. Their only Timbrex plant in production is in Tamp4 Fl., but they recently received approval to open a second plant in the Mid-Atlantic area

Plunkett-Webster is distributing it in the Southeasl Canlon Lumber Co., Canton, Mn., covers the Northeast.
