Tum tin cans into gold

l=On DECADES the products of the mobile l-and manufactured home industry have suffered an image problem. They've been called tin cans and worse. Surveys showed that most people who couldn't afford a site-built home preferred to rent, rather than live in a mobile home.

But all that is slowly changing. The industry has worked with the federal government to improve quality and safety standards, inducing banks to provide more attractive financing plans for purchasers. Better mobile home parks now feature landscaping, community pools and tennis courts. The stereotype of the aluminum ghetto is beginning to fade. Relaxed zoning laws in some states now allow mobile homes to be placed on any lot in a community.

Some mobile home sellers have displayed the units outside super markets and department stores to show the public the progress in product and placement possibilities that has occurred.

We think lumber dealers and home centers should consider displaying model units at their stores. As the mobile home industry has grown so have the opportunities for the alert retailer to position himself as his area's supplier to those who live in mobile homes.

While the home improvement aspect of this market is obviously limited in scope, it is not without possibilities. Mobile home owners and renters often add skirts, patios, decks and steps to their units. Inside the home, a wide variety of housewares and decorative items are needed. For those intending later to buy a conventional home, take-along home improvement items such as bookshelves, cabinets and the like are naturals.

A well planned and vigorously pursued campaign to serve the mobile home market could well pay handsome dividends to the store that recognizes these opportunities and goes after them.

architects for red cedar shakes and shingles for both single family and multi-family dwellings. Those who encourage this inclination by being able to provide ample amounts of both information and product will find it worth their while.

High curb appeal is an inherent characteristic of cedar building products. Roof coverings and wall claddings of red cedar shakes and shingles give a rustic, yet sophisticated, appearance to a home.

Comments from architects and builders throughout the courttry make it clear that the cedar products add something special to a home:

"Cedar shingles are chosen for their aesthetic blend with the environs, their marketability and their ease of repair."

"Handsplit shakes provide a malleable skin that handsomely accentuates the classic lines of the building."

"The patina of cedar shakes serves to blend the structure into the surrounding woods."

Builders and architects as well as home owners also appreciate the nu-

merous practical advantages of cedar shakes and shingles.

Dealers have a lot of support in presenting the product to their customers. The Red Cedar Shingle and Handsplit Shake Bureau, an outgrowth of the West Coast Lumber Manufacturers' Association in 1915. has an extensive program of advertising and promotion as well as a field service staff.

Members of the American Wood Council, the organization maintains a news bureau and has produced four films which are shown to consumers

both in person and on tv. They have literature available to support dealers and also publish The Mallet & Froe which is sent regularly to over 20,000 builders and architects to stimulate their use of shingles and shakes. The bureau also sponsors an architectural awards program every other year.

The fieldmen are a primary point of contact for dealers in obtaining brochures and other supportive material. In addition they interact:rmong dealers, builders, roofers, code officials and governmental agencies to promote cedar shakes and shingles.

The romantic saga of cigar box cedar

rFJIS IS a romantic storY of how a I small group of adventurers brought out of the jungles of Mexico virtually all the cedar used in cigar boxes in America for over a decade.

Roy and Titcomb, Inc., a pioneer Arizona lumber company, cut Mexican cedar along with hardwoods in

the swamps and jungles of San Blas on the west coast of Mexico near Cuadalajara in the 1920s. Popularly known as cigar box cedar, the wood was used to make the boxes in which cigars were packed prior to the introduction of cellophane wrappings.

Exciting and unique describes their

method of timber cruising as the old timers remember it. Cus Michaels, mill manager, and his Mexican logging foreman, would launch a rowboat and row out into the swampy area of the jungle. A small crew of boys would accompany them.

When they reached the timber area, the men would give each boy a leaf of one of the species they were looking for. They would then have the first boy climb the tallest tree with instructions to count the number of trees in the area with leaves the same as the one he carried. Thev would row a few

hundred yards farther and send No. 2 boy up the tallest tree and so on.

While the boys were climbing and counting, the men in the boat were fighting off mosquitos with plenty of gin and quinine water.

This story sounds great as far as hardwoods are concerned, but using this technique to locate the coniferous cedar stretches the imagination. Regardless, all agree that Mexican cedar for cigar boxes was the big cash deal for the firm.

After the logs were cut, they were (Please turn to page 40)

Logs (top photo) are rolled from jungle area to mill (middle) where they were processed in dry kiln, sawmill and veneer plant. One wholesaler who has had excellent results with western red cedar is Ed Fountain Lumber Company, Los Angeles, Ca. The company normally stocks from l-l/2to 3 million feet in various grades and patterns. Over the past several years, Fountain has developed many techniques for drying, milling and processing the lumber to minimize downfall and provide customers with economical specified widths and lengths.

Story at a Glance

Western red cedar meets buald. ing specifications lor many applications. .natural presen ative resists insect attack & decay. .handsome appearance is an added sales feature.

Among the highest demand items is Totem siding, or bevel siding, which is having a renaissance in many regions. This product is supplied in 4 " through 12" widths with a standard butt of l-l/4" andtul of l/4". A new pattern of Totem, which is rapidly gaining acceptance to compete with hardboard. has a 7/8" butt with a 3/8" tail. Most applications utilize the tightknot grade which is reversible with a saw texture on one face and smooth surface on the reverse side. Grading is done from the specified face.

Because of its excellent paint and stain holding characteristics, western red cedar can be finished on the resawn side, to provide a rustic look, with transparent stains which let the grain show through, or painted on the smooth face for a continuous monotone appearance, preferred on traditional type structures. Western red cedar is also popular for vertical siding with tongue and groove, shipJap or board and batten joints. The siding can also be left exposed without any finish which results in the color mel-

lowing to a soft, silver grey over the years.

The clear grades may be used for siding too. However, they are generally reserved for soffits, facia, trim, ceilings, internal paneling and cabinetry. Grades within the clear family include vertical, flat or mixed grains, heartwood and specific manufacturing characteristics. It is possible to specify virtually any appearance required to precisely reflect the image desired by the designer.

Other uses include interior and exterior planters, walkways, decks and fencing to complement surrounding architecture. Western red cedar is equally at home in a rustic mountain setting or the most sophisticated residential development.

VERSATILE in application, western red cedar can be used in a rough sawn siding with a stain f inish to highlight the grain as shown on this home which combines sidino with brick.

A primer of cedar terms

wr.f' ff:l"';J?" T3lll".l,

Those not in the lumber business often have a different answer and even a lumberman's definition may differ depending on the area he represents.

Cedar is a soft wood with reddish heartwood and white sapwood. lt comes from a coniferous tree of genus cedrus, juniperus or thuja with numerous species, each known by a different name.

Western red cedar, perhaps the best known by builders and architects, is found in Western British Columbia, Washington and Oregon.Of thethuja plicata species, it has a natural resistance to decay and insect damage. Because of this, it is widely used in shingles and shakes for roofs and exterior siding. It also is popular for fences, decks, siding and paneling, often used inside as well as outside.

Red cedar grown outside the west is known as incense cedar or eastern red cedar. Eastern red cedar is really a juniper (Juniperus virginiana) growing in much of the eastern half of the United States, both north and south, and as far west as the plains states. Closet and chest liners, cedar chests and pencils are €rmong its products. Because of its distinctive fragrance, it also is known as aromatic red cedar. Incense cedar, also an aromatic wood, grows on the Pacific Coast from Southern California to Northern Oregon as well as in parts of

Nevada. Of the libocedrus decurrens species, it is extremely durable. Widely used for pencil stock, shingles, fence posts and in other areas where stability against weathering is useful, it is said to have been discovered by Cen. John Fremont in 1847 in the upper Sacramento (Ca.) Valley.

Beautiful as well as durable, it is now being cut for interior and exterior siding by at least one lumber company. Its decay resistance, elegant grain and rich color reportedly make it a perfect woodwork material. An educational program for builders is underway to create demand for the estimated 9 billion board feet available for cutting.

To further muddle identification of cedar, there is cedar of lrbanon, Spanish cedar found in South America, Mexican cedar in the country of the same name, once used for cigar boxes, and various cedars used and identified by regional names in Japan, New Zealand, Australia and the West Indies. Cedar also is a term applied to at least a dozen other items including birds, aquatic plants and a nut used for food in Siberia.

EAYE O'DELL, prime rib and a I sponsored reception. That's the combination to be offered at the OLA's District 5 meeting, Feb. ll at Oklahoma City's Hilton Inn Northwest.

O'Dell is the speaker who drew a lengthy standing ovation at the convention in September. For humor, motivation and inspiration you can't top this native Oklahoman.

The meeting will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. sponsored by l0 associate member firms, Handi Sak, Inc., International Paper Co., Quikrete of Oklahoma, Rounds & Porter Co., Triad Systems, Wyeth Co., Allied Materials Corp., Four "S" Tree Products, Plywood Supply, and Glasshouses by Moesel's.

"District 5 directors Bill Carey, Jr., Pete Currie, and Richard Legrande, join me in expressing gratitude to the reception sponsors," said president Jim Mc-

Kellar, Jr. "We urge all retail and wholesale members to attend." If you missed hearing Faye O'Dell at the convention, you'll surely want to mark lour calendar for this meeting.

The OLA's 39th Annual Convention and Building Products Exposition will be held Aug. 16-18 in the new International

Trade Center building at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds.

The 1985 show was originally scheduled for Sept. 6-8 at the Myriad Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City where it has been held for over ten years, The change came on unanimous vote of the OLA board of directors. The action was taken after lengthy discussion of recommendations made by the convention committee.

Several reasons were given for the change. The traditional show date (first weekend after Labor Day in September) has long been considered unacceptable by many dealers and exhibitors because of

arailhr vlcc prddant W"fX?,YJili'1"?i,'J:,,1TJf"l: the new bankruptcy law. We do not want to overdo our reporting, but several of our members have indicated that they have been affected by involuntary proceedings filed by other creditors, despite the rigidity of the new law appllng to such filings.

Under the old Section 303, where a debtor had more than 12 creditors, at least three of those creditors who were holders of claims that were not contingent as to liability could initiate an involuntary bankruptcy action against the debtor through the filing of a petition in the federal bankruptcy court. A further proviso was that the claims of the three creditors filing the p€tition must aggregate at least $5,000 more than the value

of any lien on property of the debtor securing such claims.

The amendments to the Bankruptcy Code have basically left Section 303 unchanged with one important cxception: the addition of the limitation that the claims of the thrce creditors who file the petition may not be the "subject of a bona fide dispute ." The addition of this language to Section 303 has drastically changed the scope of that law and will undoubtedly make it far more difficult for creditors to initiate involuntary bankruptcy proceedings against debtors in the future.

The amendment to the Bankruptcy Code excluding disputed claims will affect more than just the scope of acceptable claims. Section 303(h) provides the standard to be applied in determining whether the Court should order relief against the debtor. Under the old Section 3030), relief was granted to creditors when the debtor was "generally not paying such debtor's debts as such debts

became due." This code scction made no distinction as to disputed or undisputed dcbts. The amendments to Scction 303(h) have removed debts which are the subject of a bona fide dispute from the class of debts upon which a debtor must be making payment when due. Thus, under Section 303 as amended, debtors must only make payment on those dcbts with which thcy have no bona fide dispute in order to avoid involuntary bankruptcy.

One aspect of Section 303 that has not been changed and is of extreme importance to creditors is the provision of subpart (i) regarding relief granted to the debtor when a petition for involuntary bankruptcy is dismissed by the Court. lt is possible that the courts will have an opportunity to dismiss more petitions for involuntary bankruptcy than before when a debtor has a bona fide dispute as to the claim.

Section 303(i) provides that if the debtor does not waive the right to judgement, the court may grant judgement against the petitioners for court costs, reasonable attorney's fees or any damages proximately caused by the taking of possession of the debtor's property. Furthermore, where the court finds that a creditor has filed a petition in bad faith, the court may grant judgement against the creditor for any damages proximately caused by such filing or punitive damages.

Famous Sink Search Still On

A luxury yacht anchored near Galveston, T[., and the Ringling Brothers mansion, Sarasota, Fl., are among sites where unusual Elkay sinks have been located as part of a famous sink search celebrating the 65th anniversary of the company.

Elegance qualified the nautical sink, an Elkay Capacity Plus model. The sink at the Ringling mansion was made of German silver because "it would be kind to good china and fine crystal."

The international search will conclude in September with a celebration scheduled for Las Vegas, Nv., in Oct. Elkay has plants in Tennessee, North Carolina, Utah and Illinois.

More Retro Window Sales

Some of America's leading replacement window dealers and distributors predict greater industry sales and greater consumer quality preferences this year.

Ten of the largest NuPrime window dealers, who were polled at a dealer advisory council meeting in Jackson, Ms., agree that 1984's sales expansion of 20 to 5090 will carry over. Positive factors are the improving economy, greater consumer confidence and acceptance of thermally-insulated windows and storm windows as vital to energy conservation. Most dealers looked at ?.0 to 3090 sales increases for 1985.

Seminars Promote Wood Usage

Building material dealers throughout the country are being invited to sponsor Wood Products Promotion Council seminars designed to help remodeling contractors use more wood more profitably.

Aiming at increasing demand for lumber and other wood products, a six hour programis puton by aWPPC team. Dealers are asked to make arrangements, accept any local costs and guarantee a minimum attendance of 35 for a fee of $10 each.

Field representatives from the American Plywood Association, the Western Wood Products Association and the Southern Forest Products Association are cooperating in promoting the program as is the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association.

RETAILER'S OFF PREMISES SHOW

DISCLAIMERS

For many unsubstantiated reasons, building material and home center advertising is packed with disclaimers. They disclaim:

o Printing enors

o Adequate stock on hand

o The accuracy of the product illustrations.

o Sale prices subjct to change without notice.

o The obligation to sell ad items in quantities.

These disclaimers offer no legal protection, nor do they avoid the moral obligation to treat your customers fairly. Most companies that run disclaimers in their ads never have a need to exercir them, Yet their disclaimers discourage shoppers. They say to a customer "you may have to make more than one trip to buy what we advertise and we may not mean what we say in print."

The printed disclaimer should be positioned behind a manager's desk and presented to a customer if and when needed.

Off premises shows, the ones where retailers rcnt the downtown armory or sports arena for a 3-day home show, scanr to have gone the way of the idea house into the mothballs for another 15 years or so. lt's no wonder. The ROI is marginal when you consider the nd dollars, drain on available co-op funds, and the burden in time and labor required by the buyers, vendors and loaned-out store personnel. Maybe the efforts have been reassigned to new store openings!

Rcmember when the three most important elements of retailing were "location, location, Iocation?" No more! Today the cry is "event! event! event!" D€partment stores and shopping mall merchant associations are creating activities to pull in traffic. Their promotions as reflected in the newspaper ads, radio & tv spots and changeable bulletin boards reflect "here's what's playing this week" at the shopping site. Developers are writing promotional schedules into their store leases. Home centers and building material dealers should now be taking advantage of their ability to pinpoint their market and attracl customers with demonstrations and clinics.

DON'T SCARE'EM OFF!

Major chains are now printing their own "how-to" pamphlets rather than just imprinting the ones available from stock sources. Personalized pamphlets serve two purposes.

(l) They avoid me-too-ism.

(2) Most stock pamphlets are too detailed. By showing how to overcome every contingency they frighten off all but the most dedicated d-i-yer. Pre-sale pamphlets should encourage occasional do-ityourselfism by showing how easy it is (three easy steps: measure - cut - install). The more exact details should be included in the packaging of the products used in the project.

TRACKING CUSTOMERS

Customers are being asked for their zip code at the point of purchase. The cashier punches the information into the register for the computer to track traffic by total dollar purchase, total number of items, product categories in dollars and units, time of day shopped, etc. This information is invaluable for directing advertising and sales promotion efforts and determining merchandise mix by geodemographics.

RED, ORANGE & BLUE

Store color identification is catching on big again. Red appears to be popular with food chains and discount houses. Orange, a color identified with Grossman's for a few decades, has now become the color symbol of many home centers

ces as discussed last month in "Delivery Policy." The counterpart of this policy is the establishment of position descriptions for those being managed. These guides are the game plans for all the players and indicate who is responsible for what.

Employees are generally categorized as those who work in the yard (yard men, fork lift operators, warehouse men, etc.) and those who work outside or from the yard (drivers, helpers, etc.). No one set of position descriptions fits both inside and outside people. Many, in practice, perform part or all of the tasks involved.

For our purpose, we are grouping the tasks most frequently performed by drivers in three categories plus a set of general responsibilities.

Queslions on deliverl cosls? Send them to this magazine at 4500 Campus Dr., Suite 480, NewPort Beach, Ca. 92660. Wally l-ynch will ans*er them in future issues. This is your chance to take advantagc of his expertise in cutting your delivery costs.

Your company may have satisfactory position descriptions in place, but if not, it's eas-v to prepare thcm and at the samc time evaluate rr,hat norl, exists. A tinte tested way of doing this task is to ask each dril'er 1o \\'rltc dorvn *,hat hc tltinks his job is. I ct hinr urc an1 cristing position description available as a guidc. Compare his list *ith *hat you think he should be doing. Bctter still, use thc above lists as the!' agrcc *ith !,our company's necds for the comparison. Add or subtract as local conditions dictate.

The difference bclrrcen *hat the company wants done and uhat the drivers think the company wanls done is the tuilight zone. It should bc clarified in the position dcscription. Drivers sce customers daily, usually more often than almost anyone else in the company does. They are the #l public relations arm of the industry. Make sure they are managed well and understand what is expected of them by both rnanagement and the managing dispatcher.

Llghl A Candle

Designed for lasting use, Create A Candle has been introduced for home decoration by Wonderwick.

The high-tech patented design product consists of a reusable wick, standard and 3 l/2 oz. starter supply of refined wax beads. for 20-25 hours of flame.

The candle is clean, odorless, dripless and sootless burning. An adjustable flame length burns in a fixed position without becoming short. The user chooses the container.

Entrance Scene

A new folding door from Western Tirrnings and Stair Co. can be expanded to fit doorways from 2' lo 8' by adding separately packaged addon panels.

Complete Wallpapering Kit

Wallpapering is reportedly made easier for d-i-yers by using a new wallcovering kit from Hyde Tools.

The seven piece kit contains a roller, five single edge razor blades, a razor knife, a plumb bob kit, a smooth brush, a paste brush and a triangle trim guide. Instructions are included in the kit which comes boxed or skin-packed.

RealWood Veneer Panels

A new 7/16'thick paneling is being introduced by Georgia-Pacific.

The product has real wood face veneers available in six species of oak, fir and pine. Rich tones and prominent grain patterns characterize their appearance.

Because of the thickness, the panels are said to be sturdier than most panels. They can be installed directly to studs for either residential or commercial applications.

Classic Wood Columns

Wood columns by E. A. Nord Co. can be used in such customary functions as porch or portico supports and embellishments, or in collonades. They can also be used in offices and homes.

The columns, made from seasoned western hemlock or Douglas fir, are available plain or fluted, and come in lengths from 8 to 20 ft. All parts, including matching capitals and bases, are sealed to help prevent moisture penetration and to help provide better paint adhesion.

A custom program offers doors up to 8 ft high to span up to 20 ft, singly or in pairs, double-ended or multiple-meeting, with heavy dutY hardware and custom accessories.

Features include extruded aluminum metal tracks, heavy duty metal latches, solid core door Panels, machined door panels, woodgrain finishes and color matched hardwood handles.

The RailThing

Adjustable, pre-assembled railings from Morgan Products can be used by a do-it-yourselfer for new home construction or as replacements during remodeling.

The system comes with starting, landing and intermediate newels, straight rail sections, and sloped rail sections that adjust to fit stair inclines of 33 to 4O degrees.

Useful either as stair railings or room dividers, the wooden railings can be stained. varnished or oainted.

Big Time Hood

A new wooden hood kit from Broan is designed for custom wood kitchen cabinet installations.

The fire retardant full-metal insert. which slides into a wooden cover, adapts to custom hoods up to 42" wide.

The kit features a squirrel cage blower with infinite speed control, energy-efficient cooktop lighting and a Heat Sentry, which automatically turns the blower to high speed when excess cooking heat is detected.

An Easy Rule To Follow

A new Stanley Powerlock rule provides a 16'-3A'blade with the feature of reading measurements through a window in the top of the rule case.

The top-read feature is used for inside measurements-the width of a doorway, the interior of a cabinet or bookcase. For laying out predetermined measurements, the desired measurement can be pre-set in the rule window and held with the blade lock. The marking edge along the back of the rule can then be used to mark the measurement.

The blade, which has dual markings that can be read left to right or right to left, is protected by DuPont Mylar. It is also available with metric measurements.

Brush-on Waterproof ing

A new waterproofing membrane package designed specifically for use on vertical surfaces such as gypsum wallboard. cement backer board and plywood has been introduced by Laticrete International.

The product is said to prevent water from seeping through cracks and penetrating to backer panels, avoiding costly replacement or repair.

The membrane, which is cold applied with a paint brush or roller, is for use in bathrooms. kitchens and showers.

The waterproofing mini-unit contains one gallon of paste and a roll of rot-proof, fiberglass fabric for covering vertical cracks and joints. It will waterproof up to 120 sq. ft.

New Door Glass Coating

Heating and air conditioning costs can reportedly be decreased when using terrace doors, patio doors and casement windows by Marvin Windows. They now use Low-E, thin, metallic coating applied to the glass and sealed within the dead air space of the insulating glass unit.

The coating is said to be virtually invisible so it can offer a natural. trueto-life view of the outdoors and provide a conventional glass appearance to the exterior.

The new film. which is said to allow light to pass through to brighten the interior, reduces glare and lowers lighting costs. The company claims the film is effective in filtering out much of the sun's ultraviolet rays, helping to control fading of drapes, carpets and furniture.

Double Clean Sink

A large soaking/cleaning bowl and a smaller compartment designed to receive a waste disposer are combined in a self-rimmed stainless steel sink from Elkay.

Garage Door Elegance

Cathedral windows can be added to any Colonial garage door style from Wayne-Dalton Corp.

These wood panel doors are made from hemlock or Douglas fir. Because the stile and rail door components are dip-treated prior to manufacturing, the company offers a two-year limited warranty against dry rot on the wood, rails and stiles.

The hotdipped galvanized steel hardware reportedly protects against corrosion and helps in smooth operation.

Light Up Four Ways

New dimensions in creative lighting are possible with four new products introduced by Vista Manufacturing.

Iftystal-Lite is a low voltage tube lighting system that can be inlaid in floors, stairways, aisles or transition areas for accent or safety. The square or round tubing can be bent to conform to irregular or curved surfaces, mounted in plastic or aluminum channels or inlaid using no mounting hardware, depending on the desired effect.

Chandel-Lite chandeliers and light curtains use clear, one-halfinch sealed acrylic light tubes. Alternate tubes, containing no bulbs, function as sparkle reflectors.

Versa-Lite is a flexible PVC tube that houses energycfficient bulbs and can be bent or twisted without damage. The tube is held by an aluminum channel.

Flex-Lite is a round, totally flexible light which can be curved or bent at sharp angles, even tied in a knot. It will conform to any shape or can be sculpted to form its own shape.

All of these Vista lighting systems are versatile enough to be adapted to home application.

The traditional exhibition site, Myriad Convention Center, rcquired the majority of attendees to utilize downtown Oklahoma City hotels where room rates and food costs continue to escalate and where parking is difficult, inadequate and expensive. The Intcrnational Trade Center Building is easily accessible from major traffic arteries, has unlimited free parking and is no more than a five minute drive from two of thc state's largest hotels.

Barring unforeseen complications and unanticipated changes, show date schedule for the next six years at the International Trade Center Building is as follows:

The firm also maintained a shiPyard with a fleet including the motorship Nogcles, a tug and a barge. Lumber was moved by water to Mazatlan, approximately 100 miles north, where it was loaded into Southern Pacific boxcars for shipment over the border to Nogales, Az. For manY years approximately 70,000 b.f. was shipped daily from the fuizona location to New York City to be assembled into finished cigar boxes.

Mexican cedar, also known as Spanish cedar, was used for all types of sash, door and millwork, as well as cigar boxes. The aromatic wood was said to resemble Philippine mahogany in color and texture.

The Roy and Titcomb mill at Nogales, Az., also milled amapa, huanacasta, cioba, venedia, ceba and PoPoilla. The latter two hardwoods, which resemble balsa, also were used for cigar boxes.

Although cigar boxes may have been the most romantic Product of this adventurous episode of lumbering, the millwork of some of Arizona's finest homes and buildings including El Conquistador Hotel in Tucson can be traced back to RoY and Titcomb's Mexican venture.

Said to be the most complete mill west of the Mississippi, the Arizona operation closed in 1932.

We are indebted to pioneer Arizona lumberman Jay O'Malley, retired chairmon of the boord, The O'MalleY Cos., for his help in preparing this story. Accounts written by Gus Michaels, who later become executive vice president of the Arizona Lumber and Building Supply Associotion, also were helpful-ed.

Cedar and the commercial building market

IJOW CAN dealers and wholeftalers generate more western red cedar product sales? One effective way to build sales is by making aggressive plans to call on and to service those who design, build and invest in commercial buildings in your area.

While pure wood frame structures will provide the best sales opportunity for western red cedar and other building products, even those buildings of non-wood construction provide an excellent potential for the decorative/

appearance items, according to RaY Moholt. He is a spokesman for the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association which is ready, willing and able to assist dealers and others with programs to stimulate use of cedar.

Trend-setting nonresidential buildings often start with western red cedar. "Because the workability and unmatched beauty of red cedar make it the inevitable choice of knowledgeable designers and architects whereever structures are built," Moholt explains, "dealers who call these benefits to the attention of designers and specifiers will be on the ground floor when product bids are issued."

"A sales point to remember," he stresses, "Whether it's in an office, a restaurant, a public building, a clinic, a service station, a bank or a shopping mall, the new look is the look of

Graham Barnes McCormlck, McCormick Lumber Co., Lexington, Ky., died Nov. 25, 1984. He was 82.

Mr. McCormick had been a managing partner for 34 years in the firm founded in l9l4 by his family. A graduate of the University of Kentucky, he was active in numerous organizations including the Kentucky Retail Lumber Dealers Association and the American Forestry Association.

He is survived by his widow, Kathleen, a son, a daughter, a stepson, four grandchildren, and a sister.

CEDAR BUILDING

(('orrtinua<l lrcn page 14) natural wood and western red cedar says it all."

Moholt recommends that dealers tell potential customers that beautifully grained western red cedar can be specified either clear or selected knotty. Dealers also should stress the range of patterns available to allow for greater design flexibility including square-edged, tongue-and-groove, v-joint and channel. Other options to be explained include boards laid up as board-on-board or board-and-batten patterns.

Another point which should be clarified for a client is the use of stains. A variety of transparent stains can be used to accent the wood tones as well as add a new, exciting dimen-

sion to the natural beauty of cedar siding.

Product sales opportunities abound for those who promote the many qualities and benefits of red cedar for commercial building applications as siding, paneling, decking, interior finish, ceilings, accents and outdoor uses, Moholt emphasizes. The examples presented on these pages show how these versatile products can add dramatic beauty to non-residential buildings inside and out.

"Dealers and distributors tracking the commercial building business in their areas have solid opportunities for increased product sales," Moholt says. He adds that if you need some business building idea stimulators to show to your local design/construction teams, you can write to the association for help. Address your request to Nonresidential Building Ideas,

Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, 1500 Yeon Building, Portland, Or.972M.
