Back up or else!
First, a belated happy New Year to all of our readers. I hope you have all had an opportunity to have some time off and enjoy the holidays with your families. We wish you much success in this new year.
It has been an interesting month at our magazine. Some of you may have read a small note in our December issue that we had suffered computer theft. Imagine a publishing company without computers! Several of our new computers had been stolen during a burglary-something you never expect to happen to you. They took computers that dealt with our subscriptions, accounting, editorial and sales records. In other words, our loss affected every facet of our business. While new computers were installed within half a day, as a small business owner it was quite painful to suffer through, not so much for the financial loss, but the issues it raised and the reality of what can happen when your information is lost. So the first thing I must admit is that unfortunately I could blame no one but myself for losing informa-
tion. Why? Simply, we had no good plan in place to back up information. The system was too loose, and yours truly was the worst culprit. It was a painful lesson to learn, but maybe an important one. Imagine if it had not been a burglary, but a fire for example, when everything could have been lost.
Many of my industry contacts have since told me that after I told them what happened, they went racing back to their offices to back up their own systems. I came from large companies with systems coming out of the whazoo, where back up was hourly, daily and automatic where you did not think about it. Many of us do not have IT staff on hand, and I suspect many customers run the same risks we did. Let me tell you that trying to reconstruct our accounting and customer records was no fun, and took me away from several days of doing business. Trying to remember every call I made in a three-week period, to whom and when, and with whom and when I was supposed to follow up was quite a painful experience. I hope to spare you my pain and stupidity, and hope if you are a business owner that you review your systems immediately, and if you are an employee you diligently back up when you are supposed to. We got off lightly; you may not.
Now to 2003. While there is no doubt that there have been some painful issues to deal with in segments of our industry-namely pricing, for many companies 2002 was still a good year or certainly an acceptable one. We have heard from mills/manufacturers all the way through the channel to dealers/retailers that many businesses have had a good or at least okay year, are still busy, and believe they have gained market share. Several dealers told me last month that they had never been so busy. I believe that bodes well for the coming year. Housing starts still look strong, interest rates will continue to be low for some time to come, and home prices will continue to climb even if more moderate than for much of 2OO2. The recent Housing Market Index, a monthly gauge of builder sentiment, in November reached its highest level since November 2000. Inevitable closures and further consolidations will continue to create market opportunities for the companies that remain. Whether you are a mill, wholesaler or retailer, the question is whether you are positioned to grow, have the mentality to grow, and are willing to take whatever steps are necessary to grow. As many have told me and as I have said many times, you can no longer simply rely on past customers, past business practices and the same product lines to survive. I hope you will take the start of the New Year to dissect your business to truly see what's working, what's not, and start to become a market-driven and not a manufacturing-driven enterprise. More about that in a future editorial. Have agreat yeareveryone.

D.qling mulled windows
[IROM two simple double-hung windows joined togeth- I-' er, to multiple connected window units, mulled windows are a dramatic addition to any project. And, dealers are profiting from their rising popularity.
"Today we are seeing an increased number of mulled units that are significantly larger and more sophisticated than ever before," says Tom Sinning, sales manager at Marvin Windows & Doors. "Part of the reason is that homeowners want to draw more natural light into their homes and take advantage of views to the outdoors. Mulled units help add more drama to a home."
Dealers play a crucial role in the orocess,
Bill Lazor, senior brand manager for Simonton Windows, explains, "As most professionals know, mulling can be done either in a manufacturing facility as windows are constructed, or in the field by builders and remodelers. Some of the most common mulled configuration requests we get are for two or three single-hung or double-hung units joined together. We can exceed that size by comfortably mulling units up to 144 inches wide by 106 inches tall. Due to transportation issues, configurations larger than that are generally considered 'field mulls' and are done by qualified contractors."
Lazor points out that virtually any combination of windows can be mulled together to create an attractive wall of windows. Oftentimes half-rounds are mulled to the top of single-hungs and double-hungs. Another popular choice is to mull a variety of fixed geometric windows to operable windows, or mulling an assortment of operable windows together, such as when a bow window is constructed of several casements.
To properly specify mulled units for a project, the single most important aspect is educating yourself on local building codes. The American Architectural Manufacturers Association recommends becoming very familiar with the design pressure rating for the specific geographic area where the mulled units will be installed. The structural limitations associated with the mulled unit must match up with the local codes, and mulled units should never be used in a situation that cannot meet those codes.
"Discuss large mulled configurations directly with the window manufacturer prior to ordering the units," suggests Lazor. "Consult the manufacturer's technical experts on the thermal expansion and contraction of mulled units along with any limitations of the product. Many manufacturers will suggest that whenever the amount of expansion and contraction is projected to exceed the recommended maximum joint movement (or the allowable clearance), that you consider dividing up the mulled units into smaller rough openings."
Another consideration is the directional location of a
wall of windows in a structure pertaining to north, south, east or west...and how the location relates to elevation from ground level. These factors all come into play when the contractor needs to ensure adequate framing is in place to secure the unit in the opening, especially for larger mulled units. Simonton recommends never shortcutting the required mullion for a given rating. Testing shows that the mullion ultimately determines the strength of the mulled unit. Working to make sure the design pressure ratings match up with the correct mullion system is critical.
Since mulled units can weigh hundreds of pounds each, it's essential that support is available in the construction to accommodate the units' specific weight. Window manufacturers can provide specific installation instructions, including information on providing the proper structural support needed for an opening.
Although mulled units are often custom-made, dealers play a crucial role in the process. Melinda Connell, marketing rep for Milgard, says dealers "order, store and deliver. We also offer the option of delivering directly to the job site. if that is what the dealer would like us to do."
"Dealers perform a very important logistical role in making sure a mulled unit gets to a job site," adds Sinning.
Mulled windows are bulky, heavy units that require the proper equipment for loading and unloading. The manpower and equipment to safely move, store and handle the mulled units are needed at manufacturing facilities, dealerships and on the job site.
Sinning suggests, "First of all, it's important to have a loading dock that sits at dock height. This eliminates the hassle of lowering or physically lifting a unit onto ground level. Second, dealers should make sure they have the proper personnel and/or equipment because the mulled units can be very large and heavy. Dealers may also have to be on hand at a job site to help the contractor get the window in place."
Mulled units should be stored on and against a flat, even surface. "Mulled windows should be stored by keeping them upright-they are often leaned onto one another," advises Connell. "They should not lay flat."
Lazor says, "While extra considerations are important. they shouldn't 'scare off industry professionals from mulled units. Stunning mulled window configurations can make any home or commercial project more appealing."
MULLED units-two or more windows joined together, stacked or side by side-are growing in popularity. Jaruuenv 2003 Burr-uNc Pnorucrs Drcnsr

U.S. lumber group criticizes tariffs
ITC also examines dispute's impact
A FTER nine months of studying la,the impact of a 2l .2Vo tariff on Canadian softwood lumber, some U.S. lumber producers are saying the tariffs may have been a mistake.
The Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, which originally supported a tariff on Canadian imports. is now suggesting alternative proposals.
"The Coalition is changing its attitude," said western region vice-chair Dick Bennett. "At this time, we are looking for a volume restraint. The old Softwood Lumber Agreement, or a renewed version of it. is starting to look pretty good right now."
Under the old agreement from 1996 to 2001, Canada imported 14.7 bd. l-t. of lumber before incurring a duty.
"We have to do something to keep our industry alive and right now we are getting killed," said Bennett.
On the Canadian side, the duties have been "a catalyst for dramatic
change in our industry," according to John Brink. owner. Brink Forest Products, Prince George, B.C.
Brink said the tariffs have forced his firm be more efficient. Brink's Prince George plant recently underwent a $2 million expansion so that it can produce 2x4s 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
It is precisely this kind ofenergetic production, particularly from British Columbia, that has U.S. producers looking to put a cap on the volume of Canadian softwood imports.
Canadian forestry minister Mike de Jong has said that he is open to a new lumber deal. but he will not consider the idea of a quota as suggested by American producers.
Steve Crombie, International Forest Products, Vancouver, B.C., reiterated that quotas were unacceptable. "We've been saying all along that the U.S. wasn't really interested in policy reform in Canada," he said. "They

simply wanted to restrict supply coming into the U.S."
The U.S International Trade Commission also weighed in on the dispute last month by holding hearings on the impact Canadian softwood lumber tariffs have had on lumber dealers, builders and home buyers.
The ITC, whose hearings focused on the competitiveness of the U.S. structural building components industry, surveyed homebuilders, lumber dealers, and other interested parties from the structural building components industry.
The domestic anti-tariff coalition, American Consumers for Affordable Housing, whose members include Home Depot and the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers, among others. told the commission that the 27Vo duty on Canadian imports is hurting consumers.
"The imports are not just on lumber users; the current duties amount to a federally imposed sales tax on new home construction, remodeling and other applications for lumber," said ACAH spokesperson Susan Petniunas. "It is a tax on homebuvers and homeowners."
CANADIAN lumber imports belween May and November ol last year increased 1.86%, while produclion was up 6.7% over the previous year
To date, over 100 members of the U.S. House and Senate have written to President Bush asking his administration to drop the tariffs and open up free trade.
This past summer, the World Trade Organization found that the U.S. Department of Commerce's countervailing duty was contrary to
from January to September. Instead of tariffs, U.S. producers now suggest quotas on Canadian imoorts are needed.
U.S. trade rules. and should be amended.
The ITC is expected to submit its findings to the Senate Finance Committee in April.
Despite the tensions, both Canadian and American officials have hinted that negotiations are expected to begin again soon.

Kerr-McAgee Exits Treating
Kerr-McGee Chemical plans to exit the forest products business and close four of its five creosote treating plants.
The Oklahoma City, Ok.-based firm will close its Columbus. Ms.. plant by the end of 2003 and its Texarkana, Tx., operation by the end of 2004. A plant in Illinois and another in Missouri will be closed over the next year.
Kerr McGee leases a fifth plant to Union Pacific Corp. in Oregon, and its disposition is the subject of ongoing discussions.
"Exiting the forest products business is consistent with Ken-McGee's strategic plan to profitably grow our two core businesses, oil and gas exploration," said Kerr-McGee's Pete Woodward.
The company estimates that the closing of all four plants will cost approximately $13 million (after taxes).
Arson Strikes Florida Dealer
Local fire officials have determined that a fire last month at Frank's Cash and Carry, Freeport, Fl., was arson.
The Dec. 8 blaze destroyed Frank's warehouse. but soared the retail build-
ing, which opened the following day.
Fire officials say an arson detection dog discovered an accelerant used to start the fire.
"It's a set fire," said fire marshal Tommy Barron. "Definitely arson."
The warehouse contained lumber, plywood, insulation and several gallons of latex paint.
Store owner Frank Schissler said he will rebuild the warehouse.
Bush Proposes Thinning Plan
The Bush Administration is pushing a new national forest thinning plan that seeks to change the manner in which environmental oversight is handled by the U.S. Forest Service.
Areas designated for thinning will still have a mandatory initial environmental analysis, but it will not be as comprehensive as cuffent Clinton-era regulations call for.
In addition, the plan seeks to narrow the timeframe for environmental impact statements, restrict administrative appeals to only those people or groups that raised objections at early hearings on thinning projects, and eliminate specific standards and procedures for maintaining and monitoring wildlife populations.
Bush Administration officials say the measures are necessary to counter groups who use the appeal process to delay timber projects they are opposed to.
Environmentalists contend that the Bush plan is an effort to eliminate citizen oversight of forest decisions.
"(The measures) are nothing more than the Administration's typical desire to cut the public out of forest decisions," said the Wilderness Society's Mike Francis.
Arkansas Yard May Expand
Pine Creek Lumber, Clifty, Ar., may add a lumberyard on a former illegal solid waste transfer station near Farmington, Ar.
Pine Creek owner Don Anderson acquired the 6-acre site and has since begun cleaning refuse from the property as required by a district court ruling.
In May, Anderson bought the property from Mel Romine, who pleaded "no contest" to county charges that he had used the site as an illegal waste transfer station.
Anderson, who also operates a propane distribution facility east of the new property, said that if he does open

Depot Adds Self-Checkout
Home Depot stores are now installing self-checkout stations as part of an overhaul of the chain's front-end checkout technology.
The most innovative aspect of FAST (Front-end Accuracy and Service Transformation) involves the installation of four self-checkout stations at 300 of Depot's highest volume stores by year end.
Next year the Atlanta, Ga.-based retailer is expected to install the stations at 500 more stores.
"FAST will significantly improve the speed, accuracy and service levels at the checkout counters for millions of Home Depot customers," said Depot's Troy Rice.
In addition to the self-checkout sta-
tions, Home Depot has partnered with NCR Corp. and Microsoft to reduce time, improve accuracy and enhance cashier performance at its traditional checkout counters.
Features of the new technology include:
. point-of-sale terminals with touch-screens featuring graphics to speed-up cashier efficiency,
. performance software to evaluate a cashier's skill against company standards,
a new operating system to manage all point-of-sale devices, and streamlining media capabilities for training employees.
Company spokesperson Don Harrison said the move was not an attempt to eliminate staff.
"Nobody is losing a job or being displaced as a result of this," he said. "Will it mean a shift toward more part-time work? I don't know."
Approximately 60Eo of Home Depot employees are full time.
EPA Sued To Expand CCA Ban
Environmentalists have filed suit against the Environmental Protection Agency to increase the scope and speed of the wood treating chemical
phase-out.
In the U.S. District Court of Washington, D.C. suit, Beyond Pesticides and the Communication Workers of America claim that the EPA has sufficient evidence to ban the use of CCA, pentachlorophenol, and creosote.
Last February, the nation's largest wood preservative manufacturers agreed to discontinue selling CCA for non-industrial wood products by the end of 2003.
Gibson's Closing Tx. Stores
Gibson's Discount Centers plans to shutter its Texas hardware stores this month as part of the closure of l7 stores in six states.
The Kansas-based retailer will close its Texas locations in Perryton, Weatherford, Kerrville and Vernon.

"Most of the communities that we operate in are ag-based communities, and with the drought and the stock market, the stores have not been able to meet out business plan," said Gibson's Ron White.

ABC Buys 29 Cameron DCs
ABC Supply Co. has acqtired 29 distribution centers in the MidAtlantic and Western regions from Cameron Ashley Building Products, Greenville, S.C.
The locations are all "one-step" distribution centers that sell roofing, siding and related exterior building products directly to contractors.
"This acquisition is a significant step within our current growth plans. We will continue to add stores in select markets while expanding product lines," says David Luck, president and chief operating officer of ABC Supply. "The new locations enhance our ability to provide contractors with thorough and consistent distribution coverage throughout the country."
New Mid-Atlantic markets include Cheverly, Frederick and Waldorf, Md.; Manassas and Richmond, Va., and Washington, D.C.
Thirteen of the new facilities will

New Lumber Pricing Service
Bloch Lumber has introduced a new free service that provides fixedforward pricing information for forest products producers, distributors and manufacturers.
The new program, B loch Benchmarks, is designed to indicate the "fair value" pricing of key lumber and OSB items for periods of three months, six months and one year into the future.
"The benchmarks are not forecasts, nor are they offers to buy and sell," said Bloch Lumber's Gregg Riley. "They are estimates based on a quantitative analysis of current market conditions and prices."
Riley went on to add that the service indicates "the price at which one might reasonably want to buy or sell a
particular item for the next three, six, or l2 months."
Bloch hopes that the service will assist companies when developing long-term budgets or trying to manage the risk of volatile lumber prices.
Bloch Benchmarks is located on the company's Web site at www. blochlumber.com.

Court Upholds Roadless Ban
Last month a federal appeals court overturned a preliminary injunction by Boise that effectively reinstates the Clinton-era ban on new road building in remote U.S. forest areas.
The Dec. l2 decision by a San Francisco, Ca., appeals court overturned an Idaho court ruling in favor of Boise, which needs to build roads for its heavy logging equipment.
In its ruling, the court found that timber removal and road construction in designated remote forests would damage "some of the last unspoiled wilderness in our country."
Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne said he will ask the U.S. Justice Department to review the decision "to make sure this ill-advised roadless rule is not implemented."
The Clinton plan covers 58.5 million acres of federal land and prevents road construction and the removal of timber and oil except for environmental reasons or to reduce wildfire risk.

Scientists in Indiana are hoping that classical breeding and biotechnology will soon lead to a superior hardwood tree for use by the flooring and furniture industry.
The goal ofresearchers at Indiana's Purdue University is to breed superior black walnut, black cherry and northern red oak trees that are faster growing, richer-grained and more disease resistant than their unmodified peers.
"If we can domesticate hardwood trees, that means you can eventually leave the wild ones where they are because you've made something that is better," said molecular biologist Keith Woeste.
Using grafted limbs from 400 different trees, researchers are now crossbreeding the most desirable black walnut trees at Purdue's experimental tree farm. In addition to grafting, scientists are genetically modifying select trees by inserting genes into embryonic trees with desirable qualities like insect resistance.
Another goal is to develop a tree that is resistant to the herbicides foresters spread over tree fanns to kill competing plant and tree vegetation.
The ultimate aim of the program is to increase the yield of hardwood timber in the U.S. It is estimated that there is an annual shortfall of 55 million hardwood seedlings a year.
Ninety percent of the U.S.'s hardwood production now comes from pri-
vate forests that are less than 100 acres in size. In these forests, the biggest and healthiest trees are harvested first, leaving behind a stock of smaller, sicker trees.
"The overall picture has been that the trees that are being harvested now are smaller that they were 50 years
ago," said National Hardwood Lumber Association's Paul Houghland Jr. "And smaller trees mean you need more of them to get the same amount of lumber."
It is feared that if current hardwood practices continue, the gene pool of hardwood species will be weakened.

Dealers Use Special Events Sell Engineered Wood
Retailers and distributors that want to promote engineered wood to their customers are getting assistance from suppliers who subsidize builder barbecues, golf outings, in-store trade shows, and other special events.
Weyerhaeuser Co.'s customer service center in Houston, Tx., actively promotes engineered wood through the company's TrusJoist division. Weyerhaeuser's Mike Tompkins says glulams, LVL, I-joists and parallel strand lumber are gaining marketshare with many custom and tract home builders. The company assists dealer customers with special events such as barbecues and golf outings through its First Choice Builders Program.
"The new high-strength glulams and other engineered products add value in the construction process and are well entrenched in the marketplace for headers, floor and roof framing," he says. He notes that homeowners are becoming much more knowledgeable about engineered wood due to Weyerhaeuser's education programs at local home and garden shows.
Olshan Lumber serves the Houston market by training its builder reps to make frequent visits to the job sites of
its builder customers. Engineered wood is gaining marketshare each year, according to Marcus Fikac. "Builders are using more glulams because they have greater confidence in an engineered product-they also reduce call-backs," he says. Olshan gets help from suppliers such as Weyerhaeuser for its training program.
"Most of our engineered wood is purchased by custom home builders, rather than contractors who build tract homes," Fikac adds. "We find more of them are preferring the new higher strength glulams." Many of the beams are used as headers and also as center beams in cathedral ceiling homes.
Sales of engineered wood are increasing each year as glulams and Ijoists gain marketshare through the rest of the Southeast. Glen Hobbs, Wholesale Wood Products. Dothan. Al., says his sales staff takes advantage of training classes conducted by International Paper and Anthony Forest Products.
Dealers can submit floor plans and drawings to Wholesale Wood for technical assistance in writing specs or answering engineering type questions. The firm doesn't sponsor special

group type "customer education" events, but its salespeople spend a lot of time in the field calling on retailers and builders.
Henson Lumber Co., Cresson, Tx., sponsors an annual golf tournament attended by about 60 builder customers and 40 vendors. "It's just a day of fun to help build relationships with our customers," says Casey Wallace. "We don't talk a lot of business, but it pays off in continuing orders throughout the year."
Several suppliers help subsidize the event, donating cash and door prizes. He says, "We start with a box lunch and then provide golf carts, greens fees, refreshments and prizes as well as merchandise certificates which customers can use to buy golf equipment in the pro shop." Total cost of the event is about $7.000.

2OOg BusinessForecast: A new year for southern pine
By Lionel J. Landry President Southem Forest Products Association
THE business climate for producI ers of southern pine lumber remains most challenging, just like so many other industries.
Just three years ago, during 1999, our industry established an all-time production record of 16.92 billion bd. ft. Homebuilding has remained strong in these first years of the New Millennium, encouraged by low mortgage rates. Eventually, lumber supply stretched demand as market dynamics shifted in the closing quarter of 2000. Total production for 2001 remained a healthy 16.10 billion bd. ft. Unlike the nation's economy, our industry is still in a recession due to moderate
demand-not strong, not weak-with record-setting imports of softwood lumber.
A relatively healthy housing market throughout 2002 is what many observers believe kept our nation's economy from remaining in a longterm recession. True, housing was strong as interest rates fell further, but lumber producers were squeezed to make a profit considering their high timber costs. Throughout 2002, a good week in the lumber business was a rare event, at best, aggravated by weak markets, and hefty import volumes. The downward production trends continued through last summer;
Southern Forest Products Association estimates tota\ 2002 southern pine production at 15.5 billion bd. ft., a 2.5Vo decline from 2001.
The events of Sept. I I have put the economic brakes on nonresidential construction activity, and this market segment failed to show any signs of recovery during 2002. Quite simply, lumber markets are oversuppliedsome say overproduced. Low mort-

gage rates have encouraged both repair and remodeling activity, plus helping turn potential homebuyers into homeowners. Affordability with the historically low mortgage rates, personal income growth and low unemployment makes the purchase of a home a reality for many more Americans.
The installed cost of framing lumber remains very competitive when measured against alternative building materials-steel, concrete, and other non-wood substitutes.
SFPA member companies produce half of the nation's southern pine lumber, and their outlook for 2003 is, at best, guarded. Most companies have curtailed operations and many mills have been shut down. Ifthe poor eco-

nomic climate persists, additional permanent closures are a distinct possibility.
A number of factors will influence business in 2003. Softwood imports from Canada continue to impact southern pine's traditional framing markets. The industry's Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports was successful in obtaining a combined 27.27o countervailing duty.
Another hurdle for southern pine producers is increased imports from overseas producers. Competing softwood species from Europe and South American continue to adversely impact our domestic market. A strong dollar and foreign competitors have also hampered southern pine exports throughout 2002. Kiln-dried southern pine is now recognized in the materials handling markets as the logical choice to meet phytosanitary requirements for shipments to the European Union. SFPA's efforts have explained the new regulations to pallet and crate makers nationwide.
Treated lumber markets were the bright spot for the southern pine industry in 2002. Despite the EPA's announcement last February to remove CCA-treated products from most consumer-type residential applications by the end of 2003, the transition to non-arsenical-based preservatives proceeds smoothly. SFPA actively participates in the Treated Wood Council (TWC) to counter environmental misinformation and to educate audiences about the merits of treated products, emphasizing their proven service track record of more
than 75 years. In mid-2002, an authoritative panel of six Florida doctors released a comprehensive report reaffirming the safety of CCA-treated products. TWC also provided the EPA's Scientific Advisory Panel with scientific studies supporting the safe use of CCA-treated products. It's important that specifiers and users understand that CCA-treated wood is not being completely phased outt it will remain available for industrial applications such as highway and agricultural uses, poles, piling, and saltwater marine exposures. SFPA
estimates treated lumber production to total 7 billion bd. ft. in 2002, dropping to 6.51 billion ft. in 2003.
As this new year is launched, SFPA begins the fourth year of its ambitious five-year marketing program, Priorities & Partnerships, promoting southern pine products for raised floor foundation systems, engineered floor and roof trusses, porches, and permanent wood foundations, among many other applications. SFPA's promotion of finger-jointed southern pine studs combines both new technology and an environmentally friendly message to builders and architects. Strategic partnerships with our customers and allied organizations are other strategies SFPA is using to move our industry forward. SFPA is an association sponsor of the Wood Promotion Network, reaching both consumers and professional audiences with positive, factual messages about our industry. In cooperation with APA, SFPA will showcase the latest equipment and technology at Expo 2003 in June.
SFPA has successfully weathered challenging market cycles since its founding some 85 years ago. Market downturns are nothing new. SFPA's programs and activities are designed to meet the challenges ahead.
- For a complete summlry of SFPA's activities and accomplishments, see its 2002 annual report, available late this month at www.sfpa.org.
