One-To-One Marketing

When canned sales letters personalized with the recipient's name in several places first appeared, people were amazed. Now, using advances in electronics and printing, this technique has grown ever more sophisticated. Today, it's called one-to-one-marketing.

But a problem that plagued earlier attempts still exists, despite all the fancy, high tech gear. What happens is that the marketer overstates his knowledge of the recipient, allowing a mistake to appear that exposes the personalization for what it really is, a try at familiarity that comes across as fake.

Some are mildly amusing. We often get letters addressed "Dear Mr. Building Products Digest." That doesn't exactly sound like an old buddy dropping us a personal note. Other such mistakes can border on the painful, such as one we recently heard of. The letter read, "George, brighten your mother's eyes this Mother's Day with a gift from (company name mercifully

deleted). The follow up letter said, "George, keep in touch with your mother via long distance this Mother's Day." While those are nice sentiments and we're sure his mother would have appreciated it, what made it awful was that she had died three years ago. So much for personalization and one-to-one in that case.

The First Commandment in this kind of marketing is an obvious one, know your databasel While that should go without saying, it is also easier said than done. Our society is fluid and almost compulsively mobile. Keeping any database current is difficult, usually expensive, always challenging, yet something that must be done. Slip-ups of any kind can result in the most costly loss of all, that of your credibility. Once lost. it is hard to regain.

One-to-one marketing is a marvelous concept, despite its obvious and not so obvious hazards. Whatever the medium used, its value can be enorrnous. Just keep that list current!

IURING 1999, our industry estabI;Tlished an all-time production record of 16.92 billion bd. ft. The first three quarters of 2000 were on a production pace to exceed l7 billion ft.

But as inventories have exceeded demand in the closing quarter, a production total similar, or just slightly below, last year's total is considered to be more realistic.

Though housing markets were solid throughout the year, there is simply more lumber on the market today, far exceeding demand. Reduced production levels during the closing months of 2000 are evidence that the southern pine lumber industry will be heading into a cyclical downturn during 2001.

The southern pine

lumber industry will be heading into a cyclical downturn.

Business during 2001 will be influenced by a variety of factors. Softwood imports from Canada have continued to affect southern pine's traditional framing markets. When March 3I, 2O0l arrives, the longstanding Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. and Canada will expire, removing all tariffs and import restrictions. At this time, there is no agreement in place to help stem the flow of Canadian lumber; a renewed agreement could take months (even years) to negotiate. The end result on April 1 could be an opening of the Canadian lumber floodgate, if a countervailing duty or some other legal action is not implemented.

Imports from overseas producers will become a larger factor during 2001. Some 400 million bd. ft. of European structural material will enter

U.S. markets this year, primarily from eastern Germany and Austria.

Throughout 2001, treated lumber markets will remain an important segment for southern pine producers. Some 45Vo of our members' production typically goes to the treated lumber industry. Southern pine's traditionally strong position in this market will continue to be challenged by South American imports, mostly of radiata pine. Most of this imported material will be destined for nonstructural applications such as fencing, mouldings, decking and similar uses.

The market effects of AWPA's newly approved decking standard permitting "shell treatment" of refractory species will be under close scrutiny throughout 2001. SFPA is an active participant ofthe industry task force to monitor this implementation of the new standard and to defend the superior inherent characteristics of southern pine as the preferred species for pressure treatment with preservatives.

The devastation caused by Formosan termites continues; infestations are now extensive in more than a dozen states. Treated southern pine is the most practical, cost-effective defense against this pest. SFPA remains at the forefront of educating builders, architects, remodelers, code officials and consumers about the merits of the "whole house" treated framing concept.

Following careful analysis, SFPA projects that annual production of southern pine lumber during 2001 will be approximately 15.8 billion bd. ft., considering the market conditions and current economic climate.

SFPA has successfully weathered challenging market cycles since the association was founded 85 years ago. Market downturns are nothing new. SFPA's programs and activities are designed to meet the challenges ahead.

The Years In Review

Southern Forest Products Association members recently gathered in New Orleans for their annual meeting and a special celebration of the organization's 85 years. The event was something of a homecoming, marked by a return to the very hotel meeting site where the association was founded in 1915.

Eighty-five years is a long time, but not for an industry that was the flrst on the American continent.

1608: Captain John Smith reported from Jamestown colony: "The country is overgrown with pine." Between explorations of the New World, he directed Polish and Dutch workers to build a crude sawmill. His London superiors reminded him that his mission was a quest for gold and silver, not trees.

Years, decades, then centuries passed. Beyond its abundance, southern pine was realized for its strength and workability. During the 18th Century, mills were located near ports and rivers for convenient access to timber and for transportation of products throughout the colonies and even overseas. Records dating to 1749 list exports of southern pine from Savannah, Ga., to London. The southern pine lumber industry thrived, entering the 20th Century in the midst of an industrial revolution.

1910: Faced with unparalleled growth and a long list of common problems to solve, lumbermen from all over the South realized a more forceful and effective organization was needed.

1915: The posh new Grunewald Hotel in New Orleans was the birthplace for a new, stronger industry body: the Southern Pine Association. Companies signed subscription contracts to support the association's programs and activities, supporting high standards. Within a month, SPA subscribers represented half of all southern pine production. The motto of "Service" was adopted and incorporated in a new seal. A trade promotion program was launched, emphasizing southern pine lumber quality. The first product promotion featured south(Please turn to next page)

As a result, the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau was created with jurisdiction over grading rules, standards and inspection.

1916: "Southern Pine: The Wood of Service" headlined the early ad campaigns. The feasibility of grademarking or branding lumber was first studied to protect the public and identify products of subscriber mills.

1917: America entered World War I against Germany. Immediately. SPA mills pledged 1.5 million bd. ft. of lumber for military housing and cargo ships. Within four months, SPA mills were sending 600,000 ft. of timbers a day to 68 different ship building yards.

With the list of subscribers growing, SPA represented two-thirds of all southem pine production.

l9l9: The post-war era meant a building boom, and SPA was on the fast track to restoring the nation's economy. More than 500 Southern towns were supported by lumbering. The Saturday Evening Post proclaimed SPA's patriotic message to returning soldiers urging them to "Build a Home First."

At the mills, machinery was pushed to the limits. Safety was a major concern. SPA created the Department of Safety & Industrial Relations to study safety and accident prevention.

1920: Mechanical efficiency was the crusade at the annual meeting, to improve manufacturing techniques while lowering costs and increasing quality.

Perpetuating the forest resource was an ongoing concern of SPA's founders. Henrv Hardtner. a

1924: SPA became the pioneer in identifying lumber products and protecting the consumer. At the annual meeting, SPA became the first organization of lumber producers to officially adopt grademarking.

1926: Success sparked the competition. Western producers began a push to threaten southem pine's traditional markets, agreeing to put up a half million dollars to promote fir framing. Following a tragic hurricane in Florida, 15 "Cardinal Points of Frame Constructionno were displayed in model homes built in Miami and New Orleans, promoting structural safety and durability.

1928: Proper seasoning joined grademarking as quality assurance for the buying public. Mandatory moisture content requirements were added to the grading rules-another first for SPA.

1930: The Great Depression was on the horizon. Annual production fell to 3 billion bd. ft., the lowest volume since 1879.

Association services were extended to a number of small mills.

1934: As the depression continued, progress was made to encourage private landowners to grow trees and practice good forest management.

Production began a vigorous recovery, jumping 277o in one year.

1939: F.D.R.'s New Deal brought wage and hourly provisions to an industry heavily dependent on manual labor. The Southern Pine Industry Committee represented all manufacturers in an effort to have fair administra-

1941: The bombing of Pearl Harbor sent America into another World War, and the wheels of the southern pine industry turned faster to meet the demands of the military. The Southern Pine War Committee channeled the movement of lumber from mills directly to the fighting fronls. Ships, barges and PT boats called for larger volumes of heavy planking and decking. Southern pine went into the construction of hangars for blimps. Southern pine ammunition boxes hit the beaches in the Pacific.

1942: Stateside, the first tree farm was dedicated to promote forest management on private lands.

1944: Near the end of the war, an amazing 20 billion ft. of southern pine was shipped to various military branches.

1945: The cause of patriotism left severe wounds throughout the industry. Equipment was worn beyond repair and replacement parts were hard to come by. A record 25,000 mills were in operation.

1948: Logging and sawmilling technology lagged behind other industries. Some forum to bring together machinery manufacturers and lumbermen was needed for an interchange of ideas to develop technology.

1950: SPA sponsored its first logging and sawmill machinery expo in New Orleans. Five hundred lumbermen inspected $1 million worth of new equipment. A modern industrial revolution was launched.

1952: The first debarker was installed in Warren, Ar. By ths decade's close. 1.000 would be in operation.

1954: The post-war building boom turned SPA to yet another crusade for high standards. A flood of unseasoned and substandard lumber from other

regions poured into the South.

A new service for architects was develop"hr u series of bulletins with data on proper southern pine usage and specification.

1955: The grading rules were revised. adopting the standard framing grades to exacting requirements of engineered construction. Southern pine engineered trusses and components meant added savings to builders.

A generation of practical forest management, much of it promulgated by the founders of SPA, paid off with a Forest Service report that banished forever the threat of a timber famine. Growth of southern pine sawtimber, according to the report, exceeded harvest and mortality by 22Vo.

1959: The educational blitz of the decade had significant impact on public agencies. A dry lumber code was adopted by the Southern Building Code Congress. FHA revised its minimum property standards to require grademarked lumber for all FHAinsured homes.

1960: Stability characterized the new decade. Expanded trade promotion, through activities and publicity, aimed to recapture southern pine's share of markets in the North and Midwest. The concept of iforest factories" developed. Paper,

furniture and plywood industries came to the South.

1965: Hunicane Camille pounded the Gulf Coast. SPA staff and experts from the Forest Products Lab analyzed the damage to wood structures. Proper framing and anchoring systems were developed. The results were two definitive publications on building storm-resistant structures.

1970: To meet the changing needs of its membership base, SPA was reorganized and its name changed to Southem Forest Products Association.

1973: A Government Affairs Program was created, marshaling the political strength of the South's lumber industry. On Capitol Hill. SFPA supported legislation encouraging intensive forest management in multiple-use forestry. Landowner assis-

tance programs showed private landowners the benefits of trees as a viable and profitable crop.

1976: A safety program was proving an effective way to deal with a new bureaucracy, one called OSHA. First, battles against sawmill noise, then a shift to health concerns. The program is labeled Safety & Health, and wood dust joins OSHA's hit list.

1978: Lumber markets were riding the crest of a mounling housing boom. New home stafts top 2 million units.

1979: Every two years, the Forest Products & Machinery Equipment Exposition attracted larger crowds and required bigger arenas for showcasing new technologies

1980: The new decade srarted with bad news for lumbermen. A severe recession took housing to record lows. SFPA looked at global markets and signed on as a cooperator with the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service. A string of multi-lingual publications introduced southern pine to importers overseas.

Reforestation tax incentives for private landowners are supported with public service spots on 300 Southern TV stations. The deregulation of rail transportation increased emphasis on truck shipments of lumber to the marketplace.

1981: Over 30 member mills closed due to the recession.

SFPA refocused on markets other than

homebuilding, noting uses rn nonresldential structures and rural buildings. Nothing new here-similar campaigns were conducted as early as 1918.

The market potential for treated lumber earned careful study.

1982: The recession ended and a wealth of new technology became available. Production topped l0 billion ft. for the first time since WW II.

1984: Members realized they couldn't depend so heavily on new home construction to absorb growing production volumes. New markets had to be found. A special Select Panel created a five-year Marketing Marathon aimed at boosting demand. Video training and promotional tools were developed for retailers.

1987: Seventeen wood-frame demonstration homes were built in the

Caribbean to promote new housing there. Lumber quality came under closer scrutiny. Members made changes, and the results were positive.

1987: SFPA's Government Affairs division tackled issues moving through state legislatures affecting timber supply. Action on land-use management, taxes and transportation were closely monitored.

Annual production hit its highest level since 1925. The Marketing Marathon was showing solid results.

1988: Industry unity was assured with the formation of the Southern Pine Marketing Council, joining the marketing muscle of both SFPA and the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association. Now, marketing efforts were supported by SOVo of those producing southern pine lumber.

1989: SFPA won a three-year battle with OSHA over wood dust.

Mother Nature sen( a tragic message to South Carolina: Hurricane Hugo, which in eight hours leveled 12 billion ft., triple the devastation of Mount St. Helens.

1990: The fate of the spotted owl threw the Western industry into chaos. Fears of a ripple effect in the South over a certain woodpecker were tempered by SFPA's proactive stand.

Marketing Marathon II began, an expanded five-year program to diversify southern pine markets and promote new value-added products.

1992: A new Retailer Advisory Board solicited input from dealers.

Results of the North American InGrade Testing Program validated most of the southern pine visual design values used for more than 20 years.

1995: Vision 2000 was the newest plan designed to maintain southern pine's market share in light of increased competition from alternative species and non-wood materials.

The Southern Pine Council established a presence on the Internet.

1999: Credit a strong housing market for record southern pine lumber production: 16.92 billion bd. ft.

2ffi0: Priorities & Partnerships was a new five-year plan to defend and increase southern pine's share of markets through targeted promotion, technical assistance, and strategic partnerships with customer groups.

Asbestos Forces Armstrong Into Chapter 11

Armstrong Holdings' major operating subsidiary, Armstrong World Industries, has filed Chapter 1l bankruptcy, hoping a reorganization can help resolve its asbestos liabilities.

Two Armstrong World subsidiaries, Nitram Liquidators and Desseaux Corp., also filed for protection. Yet, Armstrong Holdings, Triangle Pacific (Bruce Hardwood Flooring, Hartco Flooring and Robbins Hardwood Flooring), ceiling grid joint venture WAVE, Armstrong Canada and its other non-U.S. operating subsidiaries were not included in the filing.

New Depot CEO On The Road

Former General Electric Power Systems president and ceo Robert L. Nardelli has been apointed president and ceo of Home Depot.

Nardelli. 52. succeeds Arthur Blank, who will join co-founder Bernard Marcus as a co-chairman.

A 26-yen veteran of GE and runner-up in the race to succeed chairman and ceo John F. Welch Jr., Nardelli plans to preserve Depot's entrepreneurial spirit, but would like to install more "commonalty" in the operation. "Otherwise, it's organized chaos," he said, adding, "There is infinite capacity to improve on everything we do."

While some analysts praised the apppointment and commended Nardelli for his ability to help boost GE's profits and make the firm more efficient, others suggested his lack of retail experience would be a tough hindrance to overcome, and whether his hands-on management style might irk store employees.

The new boss was quick to point out his familiarity with GE's lighting and appliance products that are sold in Home Depot's stores, and said he would not hesitate to consult Blank and Marcus, labelling both men "icons in the retailing business."

Analysts say one advantage of Nardelli's background is his experience in global acquisitions, which is sure to come in handy as the chain expands from its current 1,087 stores to over 2,300 in the next four years.

Nardelli and Marcus are in the midst of a proposed two to three month store visitation tour, allowing the new ceo to walk the aisles and meet with store employees.

profitable, industry leading businesses. We can no longer allow the asbestos uncertainty to eat away at these businesses, nor can we cutback on investment without damaging them."

With $4 billion in consolidated assets, Armstrong has over 1,000 creditors and $3.3 billion in liabilities, and was a defendant in an estimated 175,000 pending asbestos-related personal injury claims.

To enhance its liquidity, Armstrong obtained a commitment for $400 million debtor-in-possession financing with Chase Manhattan Bank.

After holding practically every one of its conventions in January since its 1939 inception, the International Housewares Show will move to March in 2006.

The 2006 event will be held March 12-15 at McCormick Place, Chicago. Among the reasons given for the switch were that the show is too close to the busy holiday season and fiscal year-end closes in January.

"There are some major factors that, if combined, may cause a distinct change in the market in 2001," predicts Mark Schield, vice president of Weather Shield Windows & Doors. "Housing starts are certainly beginning to level off and decline slightly. At the same time, energy prices continue to rise. For some industries, rising fuel costs are causing transportation rates to increase. Those same increases in energy prices can also be felt on the manufacturing end. When you combine the increasing costs in the market with a decline in housing starts, it can result in a volatile situation."

When selecting the manufacturer of windows, doors and skylights for their projects, architects are concerned most about product availability and durability, according to a new National Fenestration Rating Council survey.

Architects were asked to indicate the importance of each of 15 attributes in selecting a fenesffation manufacturer, with "very important" assigned a score of 5 and "not important" assigned a score of 1. Product availability and durability tied for first with an average score sf 4.5. Choice of styles (4.4), choice of finishes (4,3), and manufacfurer reputation (4.3) rounded out &e top five.

The study also demonstrated that energy performance is an important consideration for archi tects in choosing fenesiration products. Regardless of their area of concentration (residential, commercial or industrial), most architects said they "often" or "very often" use energy performance information in selecting products.

Half use NFRC ratings to rate energy performance, and nearly all of those who do find the ratings to be "very trustworthy."

Cautious Lumber And Panel Forecast

North American lumber and structural wood panel production is expected to decline somewhat in 2001, while LVL and wood l-joist output will increase, according to APA-The Engineered Wood Association and the Southern Forest Products Association. Both predict high oil prices and the Fed's desire to keep inflation in check will keep the economy lrom growing too fast.

The increased market growth of the past two years in remodeling and nonresidential construction is forecast to decrease as well due to slower job growth and higher interest rates. In turn, single and multifamily starts should slip from 1.58 million this year to 1.45 million in 2002, with current levels returning in 2005.

Single-family units each consume on average 14,200 bd. ft. of lumber and 11,600 sq. ft. of structural panels (3/8" basis), while 5,540 bd. ft. of lumber and about 4,000 sq. ft. of structural panels are used per multifamily unit.

The weakening of the dollar and the expected recovery of European and eastern Asia economies should increase

exports, partially offsetting the declines in housing starts. Europe, Japan, Mexico and the Caribbean account for threefourths of all North American lumber and panel exports.

While raw materials are expected to be sufficient, rising timber costs have hit the South especially hard. In the West, continued environmental restrictions on public and private timber, coupled with increased use of private timber supplies will lead to tighter western timber supplies over the next five years. Conversely, Canadian forests should continue to meet softwood lumber producers' needs, not withstanding new environmental legislation or other factors.

North American lumber production is forecast to decline 2Vo next year from 65.7 billion bd ft. to 64.5 billion, and to 63.3 billion bd. ft. in 2002, before increasing to 68.1 billion bd. ft. in 2005. U.S. production is expected to be 34.6 billion bd. ft. in 2001, with Canadian production at 29.9 billion. While Canada exports almost two-thirds of its lumber production, the U.S. should consume 54 billion bd. ft. of lumber next year, of which 19.5 billion ft. will be imported.

Structural panel production in North America is expected to slip 2.37o to 39.1 billion sq. ft. (3/8" basis), with U.S. output at 21.1 billion ft., and Canada I1.4 billion. OSB output should exceed plywood production by about 1.2 billion bd. ft., growing to approximately 2.1 billion ft.by 2002 and approaching 9.6 billion three years later, when North American totals could reach 42 billion sq. ft.

Glulam timber production is forecast to be 355 million bd. ft. in 2001 for North America, increasing to 372 million ft. by 2002, and achieving a record high of about 475 million ft. by 2005. The increase will be largely influenced by the economic recovery of Japan, the glulam industry's largest export market. Another factor will be the increased use of glulams in place of solid sawn timbers. Total glulam exports should reach 25 billion bd. ft. this year, 35 million tt.by 2OO2 and about 45 million ft. by 2005.

Wood l-joist production is expected to continue to rise as more builders become familiar with the product and switch from lumber. This year's production is forecast to be 940 million linear ft. and to increase about 67a annually through 2005 to 1.4 billion linear ft. I-joists account for roughly 387o of the raised wood floor market, and are expected to total 557oby 2005.

Lastly, LVL production is forecast to reach 54.5 million cubic ft. this year, and to continue to rise annually to 74 million ft. in 2005.

Retailing vs. E-tailing

With so much attention being given to the demise of high profile Internet retailers, traditional retailers are reconsidering the merits of having tleir cnlins 6ps13tions set up as separate companies.

In fact, traditional brick and mortar retailers with close links to their online operations have significant advantages over pure Internet retailers, according to the I nternational eRetail Association.

Advantages include:

. Established brand name.

Can leverage physical stores to boost online sales. Often have greater resources to sustain and build online operations.

. Allow customers to shop online and collect purchases at their local store.

. Give customers the option of returning purchases to local stores.

Rayonier Sharpens Focus

With plans to focus on its Performance Fibers and Timberland Management divisions, Rayonier is reevaluating its non-core businesses, including possibly selling its New Zealand MDF plant.

The two core businesses this year are expected to account for two-thirds of the company's revenue, but l2OVo of operating income.

The company had considered forming a Real Estate Investment Trust, but instead will concentrate its strategic focus and resources on its two strongest divisions. As a result, Rayonier has retained an investment banking firm to explore strategic alternatives for the four-year-old panel facility and is nearing completion of the sale of its 25Vo joint venture interest in 41,000 acres of timberland in New Zealand.

L-P Closing 4 More Facilities

Louisiana-Pacific Corp. is indefinitely closing two lumber mills to adjust production and permanently shuttering two industrial panel plants to focus on higher-return facilities.

Production at lumber facilities in Jasper, Tx., and Evergreen, Al., will

be indefinitely curtailed to better balance production levels with both current and expected customer demand. The exact timing of the shut downs is still being determined.

L-P attributed permanent closure of its Oroville, Ca., hardboard facility and Clayton, Al., MDF plant to falling demand for such products and increased competition from more modern facilities.

Weeks earlier, L-P announced plans to shutter its Bernice, La., lumber mill; New Waverly, Tx., plywood facility, and four cellulose insulation plants operated by US GreenFiber, LLC, L-P's joint venture with Casella Waste Systems, Inc.

Rental Genters For 60 Lowe's

Lowe's Cos. has agreed to allow NationsRent Inc., a Fort Lauderdale, Fl.-based construction equipment flrm, to operate rental centers in 60 of its stores.

The store-within-a-store concept, which will offer construction tools and equipment to d-i-yers and contractors, will open in 22 markets by the end of 2001, and will be leased by NationsRent from Lowe's until 2008, with two five-year renewal options.

Depot Expansion StillA Go

Home Depot said it expects to have 2,300 stores by 2004, and will expand its home improvement loan program to all U.S. stores to boost sales, particularly for kitchen and bath improvements.

The chain said it plans to continue its growth by implementing the following changes:

(l) Reduce stocking tasks during store hours, enabling employees to spend more time with customers.

(2) Provide better service to professional contractors by offering daily deliveries, overseen by a staff geared to aid pros.

(3) Expand tool rental service from the current count of 289 stores offering 200 product categories.

(4) Increase brand recognition of product lines such as Thomasville cabinets and John Deere mowers.

(5) Increase product purchasing abilities worldwide.

The company also plans to open 18 new Expo Design stores within the next vear. for a total of44.

Study Claims Back Belts Don't Help

A Journal of American Medical Association study of 9,000 Wal-Mart workers said that back belts do nothing to prevent injuries.

The report added that workers who regularly wear the belt are just as likely to experience back pain as ones who go belt-less.

The findings were immediately disputed by UCLA, publishers of a 1996 study of 36,000 Home Depot workers, which reported that back injuries could be reduced by one-third if workers wore back belts.

David McArthur, author of the UCLA study, said that the new study's authors, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, should have consulted medical records instead of simply asking participants if they had experienced back pain.

"Such 'self reports' are far less accurate," he said, in effect, getting back at OSHA for challenging his own study.

Lower back pain, the second most common reason for a doctor visit, accounted for about $8.8 billion in workers' compensation claims in

OSHA's scientists were not the only ones to nix the effectiveness of the back belt. Stephanie Alvarado, 32, a Los Angeles-based Home Depot cashier, said she never wears the belts, despite company policy.

"They are uncomfortable and make my back hurt more," she said.

Jose Magallon, who owns a hardware store nearby, disagrees, noting that it's a moot point anyway because "insurance companies make all the employees wear them" anyway.

"The belt does help," said Adolfo Gutierrez, an L.A. delivery truck driver. "It's helping me right now."

Restructuring Firm Expands

Pro dealer-focused restructuring specialists Clark Sherman Colvin, Inc., has a new name and an expanded focus as a private investment firm.

Newly-renamed CSC Capital Partners, Ltd. will seek to acquire, restructure and consolidate under-performing pro dealers into a nationwide chain. Based in Salem. Or.. the company currently is exploring opportunities in Florida, Tennessee, Arizona and California.

Explains managing partner Clark Colvin: "People don't appreciate the magnitude of opportunities existing for savvy investors who understand that an undervalued and under-managed, earnings-poor, commodity-oriented and incorrectly allocated assetbased industry is ripe for consolida-

tion. Do things the other way around, and you can have an explosion in value creation."

Second and third generation family-owned and operated lumber companies can turn an unproductive business into part of a "nationwide money machine," says Colvin. "Lumber companies have massive amounts of non-productive assets. So, why pay for an acquisition using debt when you can liquidate non-productive or under-productive assets and pay cash?"

He says current acquisitions in the industry seem to suffer in strategic intent. "Acquirers," Colvin explains, "focus on growth for growth sake, and marketshare expansion without a clear understanding of the debt service, distribution and low earnings risks associated with buyouts. Restructurings oriented toward achieving economies of scale are clearly missing. The consequences of such ill-fated plans can be seen all across the country."

A pair of consumer watchdog groups said home-improvement contractors received the largest number of customer complaints in 1999, even more than car dealers, the two-time defending champion gripe group.

In designating contractors for the top spot for the first time, the National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators and the Consumer Federation of America said that consumers chastised pros for shoddy work, never finishing projects and fi nancial misappropriations.

Substitutes Erode Wood Markets

Wood and non-wood substitutes continue to displace conventional, sawn structural and appearance grade lumber products at a slow but steady pace, according to a new report from Wood Markets.

Collectively, engineered wood and non-wood substitutes represent a volume equivalent to over lOVa of all wood products consumption in North America-or more than 7 billion bd. ft. in 1999. "More convincing is that these substitutes have collectively been growing at the astounding rate of almost 207o per year since 1992, a rate that pales to anything in the solid wood business," notes Wood Markets publisher Russell Taylor.

What is almost unbelievable to the lumber trade is that increasingly end-users are willing to pay substantially more for engineered or specialty non-wood products. "For example," Taylor says, "a spectrum of end-users will pay a 507o premium for plastic decking lumber over the price for some of the highest quality knotty cedar or twice the price for treated pine decking." He says the perception is that substitutes can deliver higher quality, value, performance and reliability.

These same end-users are choosing substitutes over lumber partly as a lack of confidence with wood or in response to the strong promotion that substitutes are able to generate. As well, problems with variable lumber quality and volatile prices have caused builders to switch to the largest group of lumber substitutes, engineered wood products (mainly Ijoists, LVL, glulams and fingerjointed studs). About l0% of lumber substitutes are actually wood-based or engineered products.

Lumber substitutes are growing over 500 million bd. ft.

per year-about the equivalent production of three large sawmills. However, this incremental volume will likely give lumber producers some additional trouble since an oversupply of lumber is expected to lower sawmill output throughout North America over the next few years.

Steel studs for residential construction remain the largest threat to solid sawn and engineered lumber, even though actual use of steel to date is still small. This contrasts to vinyl siding, which over the last 20 years has overtaken 50Vo of the siding market and become the lowest priced product. Two other substitutes, fiber cement siding and OSB, have another llvo each, while wood siding has sunk to about 87o from close to a 507o share in the late 1970s.

Substitute products are forecast to increase in quantity while a variety of new composite products designed "with the consumer in mind" are expected to enter the market on a steady basis. The onslaught of substitutes will continue to be driven by an older and wealthier consumer who wants products that offer consistent performance, little to no maintenance, and are backed up by wananties ranging from 10 to 50 years. Conventional lumber's fit into a more discerning market will mean that some commodities will need to be improved, repositioned or priced even lower to remain good value over specialty products or substitutes.

SHOP TALK

I agree with your editorial ("Say What?") on page 6 of the December edition. The computer folks should use greater clarity to help everyone understand what they have to offer. And, all things considered, people in our low-tech industry have done a remarkable job at keeping up.

But I think there is another point to be made from all of this. In the same way that the high-tech jargon confuses us in the low-tech world. I can attest from 25 or so years in the retail end of the lumber industry, that our own jargon is a bit daunting to the layman. We get busy quoting "four quarter," "face and better," "manufactured shop," "rift cut," and other industry terms, along with initials like OSB, MDF and the like. The pro customers kind of understand. But who can blame our retail customers for being a bit befuddled by all of this?

ing sizes, the big box guys have cut through some of this mystery. The lesson for the rest of us, the independents who are clinging to our part of the lumber market: we must work to relate better to our customers and prospects, not just to our old-timers who roll lumberese off the tongue like their mother language. The less mysterious we can make our products and services, the more we'll see satisfied and returning customers.

Tools with smaller grips and gloves that accommodate long fingernails are just two examples of how the hardware industry is cognizant of the growing female d-i-y market.

Roughly 387o of all homeimprovement purchases in 1999 were made by women, according to the American Hardware Manufacturers Association, a point not lost on retailers.

Lowe's, for instance, is redesigning its stores to make them more appealing to women, who account for 507o of purchases, said spokeswoman Chris Ahearn.

"We have wider, brighter aisles

and we are clean and neat," she said. "Plus, we have signage that is easy to read."

Lawn and garden products manufacturers also have begun courting female fixer-uppers by designing products to meet their needs.

One of them, Garden Pals, Mira Loma, Ca., has created lightweight gardening tools for women that the elderly and arthritis sufferers also can use.

"They wanted reduced-grip widths, stainless-steel blades that won't rust and locking mechanisms that can be operated with one hand," said Garden Pals' Victoria Addison, who noted that she relied on women for design tips for trowels, weeders and pruners.

Another firm, Midwest Quality Gloves, Chillicothe, Mo., has designed longer, narrower, femalefriendly work gloves with reinforced fingertips to protect fingernails.

According to home improvement tv show host Ron Hazelton, many women lack the confidence to take on major projects such as knocking down walls, but are willing to do small jobs. Still, that is bound to change. "Once they try plumbing and electrical work, they will find it is not rocket science," he said.

The Southern Forest Products Association and APA-The Engineered Wood Association are sponsoring the building of an innovative demonstration house in Madison. Wi.. as part of the Build a Better Home program.

The structure features construction methods such as moisture intrusion protection and a Permanent Wood Foundation made of pressure treated wood plus lumberframed walls sheathed with plywood.
