Have your say on Leicester’s Local Plan A CONSULTATION has opened asking for people’s views on Leicester’s Local Plan. The plan, which sets out policies and proposals for the city’s growth over the next 15 years, covers a wide range of issues that affect city residents, including future plans for housing, employment, transport and economic development. The consultation is available online at consultations.leicester.gov.uk. It includes the draft Local Plan and details of all proposed sites for potential development across the city, as well as an interactive map that sets out all the sites in detail. People are able to click on the sites and make individual comments on them. City mayor Peter Soulsby said: “A Local Plan is something every local authority has to have in place, by law. It covers the way we plan to develop the city over the next 15 years. Without such a plan, it would be harder for us to protect wildlife and our built heritage, make plans for a greener and healthier city, or effectively accommodate the growing needs of our city. “We know that we have a number of challenges ahead – not least the climate emergency and our responsibility to protect our environment for future generations. That is why our new Local Plan is more important than ever. Continued on page 2 ...>

Abbey Meadows Design & Build Project

Construction work starts on 82 new affordable homes in Leicester LOVELL PARTNERSHIPS has begun construction work on a £10 million design and build project at Abbey Meadows in Leicester, which is the first scheme it secured as part of its plans to expand into the East Midlands. The Mayor of Leicester, Sir Peter Soulsby, recently attended the site to celebrate the ground breaking along with representatives from L-R Allan Fisher, NCHA, Sir Peter Soulsby, Leicester City Council Lovell and Nottingham and Chris Timmins, Lovell Midlands Community Housing Association (NCHA). Leading partnerships developer Lovell will be working with NCHA and GS Residential to bring 82 two, three and four-bedroom homes to the city. The new development will create muchneeded affordable homes in Leicester, with the first homes hoping to be completed in January 2021. Sir Peter Soulsby, Mayor of Leicester, said: “I’m very pleased to welcome this development at Abbey Meadows, where it will complement the extensive regeneration work we are doing along Leicester’s waterside, as well as providing much-needed affordable homes and helping to encourage further investment in the area.” Chris Timmins, East Midlands area director at Lovell, said: “This project is our first in Leicester since 2011 and plays in integral part in our growth plans across the East Midlands, whilst reducing the shortage of affordable homes across the region and meeting the demands of local communities. Allan Fisher, Director of Development and Assets at NCHA, said: “The pandemic has been the cause of many project delays, including this new development for Leicester. It’s great that building work can now begin, and we’re looking forward to the completion of these new affordable homes for people in the city. Our thanks go to our partners Lovell and GS Residential, for their continued dedication to the project, despite the recent setbacks.”
