Groby Juniors say Thank You to their many sponsors!
Martinshaw Says Goodbye to Ginny Staps After close to a quarter of a century, Martinshaw’s Bursar, Mrs Ginny Staps, retired and said goodbye to the local Primary School.
Following last year’s very successful season, many at Groby Juniors were busy over the summer months raising money for their teams new kits and training jackets. Many activities took place. The boys themselves raising money by cycling around Rutland Water on which turned out to be on one of the hottest days of the summer! A great time was had by all and even included a little paddling to cool down at the finishing line. There has been a Business Card Raffle where businesses were invited to pay £10 to put their cards in to the raffle with the prize being their names to appear on our kits. Other companies have also very generously come forward to sponsor a kit. This season the teams will now look as good on and off the field as they hopefully will be playing on it! We would like to thank everybody who has contributed in any way for their support, not least the parents of our players. As many of you are no doubt aware it becomes harder and harder to raise funds especially in today’s current economic climate. In these circumstances it has made us even more delighted that our teams have been so successful, not to mention impressed by the amount of support we have received from the local village communities.

Throughout her time at the School, Ginny also served on the Governing body and achieved the remarkable record of never having missed a single meeting, a record of dedication and commitment that I would imagine would be very hard to match. On Thursday 14th October, Ginny’s final day, a special School assembly was held and children from all years ranging from Foundation to Year 6 presented her with cards and sang her favourite songs. A card produced by year 4 in the shape of a shoe drew particular comment. The children were obviously aware of Ginny’s reputation as Desford’s answer to Imelda Marcos. In the evening a party was organised at the School where colleagues past and present attended to say goodbye. Among the guests were her husband and sons and the three Headmasters that Ginny had worked with over the years, Mr Geoff Heath, Mr Steve White and the present Head, Mr Andrew Raben. John Gillingham, a past Deputy Head, gave an hilarious talk concerning her past, present and future and a somewhat embarrassed and emotional Ginny replied and expressed her sadness to be leaving what she referred to as this ‘Happy, lovely and progressive School’. All in all a wonderful send off for a remarkable lady.
