Dog fouling and litter getting worse at Altar Stones nature reserve Reserve manager of the Altar Stones nature reserve in Markfield has noticed a growing problem with dog muck and litter over the past few years. Nathalie Cossa, reserve manager says “when has it become acceptable to not pick up after your dog or to throw litter onto the ground?” Four bin bags of litter were collected which comprised mainly of beer cans found throughout the nature reserve and on the other side of the dry-stone wall in the lay-by. “It appears that people just park up in the layby and throw their rubbish over the wall” says Nathalie, “I only did a litter pick before Christmas so to have 4 full bins full of rubbish in such a short space of time is very depressing. A dead bird was found stuck in one of the beer cans so as well as looking unattractive to visitors it’s also a hazard for wildlife.” There is also concern regarding the increasing amount of dog fouling. Posters have been put up asking people to pick up after their dogs but unfortunately not all dog walkers are responsible. Some dog walkers don’t appear to have any respect for other visitors to the nature reserve including volunteers who help manage the reserve for the enjoyment of visitors and children. Local girl Lydia selected as a Miss Leicestershire 2014 finalist Markfield girl LYDIA FROST (aged 17) has been chosen as a finalist for this year’s Miss Leicestershire competition. Following auditions in January, the contest judges decided on the 20-strong short-list, whittled down from hundreds of hopefuls. The Final is being held on Thursday 10th April at Athena, in the city centre, with the winner getting a fast-track pass into the final round of Miss England which takes place in June in Torbay. “It was extremely hard to choose the shortlisted girls,” said judge and Miss England organiser Angie Beasley. “The standard was really high this Lydia Frost year. In fact, it was so high, it almost seems like a semi-final of Miss England”. Determined to dismiss the stereotypes surrounding beauty pageants, Angie said the competition was “not just about being the most beautiful girl”. “We looked for confidence, but not overly-confident, the ability to be photogenic and, of course, they needed to look like a model” In preparation for the final, each shortlisted contestant is now required to complete a series of tasks. One of the challenges is raising as much money as possible for the Miss World charity, Beauty With A Purpose and all of the funds raised will be spent in this country. The contestants, who are all aged 17 to 25, will also be taking part in a boot camp-style fitness day. In addition, each finalist will have to create her own handmade ecofriendly outfit, which she will showcase in the final. Members of the public will be given the chance to vote for their favourite contestant nearer to the final showdown. If you would like to sponsor Lydia and/or donate to Beauty with a purpose please contact her on 01530 242364.
