Football returns to Stamford Memorial Park
Budget savings keep Council Tax rise to 4.3p a week BUDGET savings of just under £1 million have enabled the Borough Council to keep the boroughwide average Band D Council Tax increase for 2010/11 at 2 per cent.
Report from Scott Upton Groby Juniors Under 8’s team played the first organised game of football on Stamford Memorial Park for over 6 years on Sunday 7th February. Previously unbeaten, and top of their league, the team was expected to mark the Club’s return with a home win against Mowbray Jaguars. Mowbray, however, turned out to be the party-poopers and inflicted the first ever defeat on the Under 8’s with a deserved 1-0 victory as Groby failed to rise to the occasion. It was a very different story however, on Sunday 14th February, which saw Groby Juniors Under 7’s team play host to local rivals Ratby Rovers on the new pitch. Ratby are widely acknowledged to be one of the best teams in Leicestershire at this age group, however they were not expected to beat Groby’s Under 7’s starlets who have won every game they have ever played. This annual increase of £2.22 per household (or just 4.3 pence a week) means the council will stay as the lowest Council Tax paying district in Leicestershire and the 10th lowest in England and Wales. The council, like many private and public sector organisations has, during the economic downturn, experienced severe financial pressures. Reductions in central government support, a reduction in income and an increase in costs, have meant that the council has had to look very closely at the services it provides and the funding that is allocated to each of them. This work started in January 2008 as officers and councillors worked together to produce a Medium Term Financial Strategy for the council. This process also included consultation with the people of the borough, through the council’s Citizens’ Panel and the Borough Bulletin, to identify those services that are most important to the people who live in Hinckley and Bosworth. Have Your Say On Groby’s Christmas Lights This Christmas just past, Groby Parish Council trialled a new, improved Christmas lighting display in the village.
The response from villagers was very favourable, and Groby Parish Council is now inviting a wider response from local residents to enable it to plan for future years.
