FREE Monthly News and Information Magazine for Shepshed Shepshed Toilets re-open The refurbished Shepshed public toilets were re-opened for use on Friday 20th May. An official opening will take place in due course. The opening hours will be 8.30am Monday - Saturday and 9am - 2pm Sunday (this may be subject to change, as these are trial times).

As these public conveniences will be the responsibility of Shepshed Town Council to maintain, residents are urged to take care of the facility as the money to maintain them will be out of ratepayers’ money of Shepshed.

Rotary Club Visits Rainbows Hospice

Several members of the Rotary Club of the Soar Valley were shown round the new facilities at the Rainbows Hospice on Monday May 9th.

Lisa Watts from Rainbows was the guide and explained that the aim of the recent improvements had been to understand what client families would value and then provide these facilities in an environment that was inviting and friendly.

Rotary President Norman Ellis expressed everyone’s feelings when he said that he was most impressed at the thought and planning that had gone into the new facilities and at the high quality of the end result.

Norman handed Lisa a cheque for £1000 as part of the club’s regular support for Rainbows.

NEXT ISSUE of Shepshed Eye The next issue of Shepshed Community Eye (called the July issue) will come out around 24th June, and the advert/copy deadline is 11th June.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be no issue published at the end of July (‘August issue’), as we all take a well-earned rest from magazine production, and relax in Barbados for a month. (Joke) The ‘September’ issue will be out on 25th & 26th August.

Outdoor Boxercise classes are coming to Shepshed to offer an alternative twist to normal exercise classes during those summer months.

The session will be outside the Glenmore centre on a grassed area every Monday from 6th June - 11th July at 6-7pm, the class costs just £2 per session.

Boxercise is a safe, effective & fun form of exercise suitable for all ages & abilities, the workout uses the entire body & is a great calorie burner to improve fitness levels& tone up!

Stroke & Heart Club in Party Mood!

On Thursday 21st April Shepshed & District Stroke and Heart Club was in a party mood.

The members took home craft work which they had made during the weeks leading up to Easter.

Eleanor Hewitt our crafts lady came loaded with model carts made by the members, filled with chocolate bunnies, chickens and Easter eggs.

Message From Shepshed Conservatives We would like to thank everybody who voted for us on 5th May. We managed to retain the 3 Borough Council seats and all 8 of the conservatives who stood for the Town were elected.

For the first time since 1991 the Conservatives are going to be in control of the Town Council and we look forward to carrying out our objectives over the next four years and working with other members of the Town and Borough Council for the good of Shepshed.

The Conservative team are sorry that some hard working members of the last Town Council have lost their seats.

Yes, cricket is bonkers!

Nicky Morgan MP writes in Shepshed Eye...

Importance of the Green Belt policy, and my meeting with the Young Person of the Year We have now passed the one year mark since I was elected, and I have officially dealt with over 1300 cases, including nearly 200 from Shepshed residents. This does not include responding to policy queries.

One local issue that has been raised with me is that of the green belt concept as a tool for protecting our towns, cities, and villages from inappropriate development and unrestricted sprawl.

I recently attended the exhibition at the Town Council Offices organised by Bloor Homes about their plans for homes near Iveshead Road.

I am a strong proponent of this concept, and welcome the Coalition Government’s commitment to maintain green belt protection as part of the new National Planning Policy Framework.

As part of this framework, Ministers will be considering how best to update green belt policy. Currently, local planning authorities must have regard

to existing planning guidance in writing development plans or deciding planning proposals affecting green belt. The current policy does establish a presumption against inappropriate development on green belt land, and it also states the importance of keeping green belt land permanently open to prevent damaging developments and sprawl. Last month I was delighted to meet with Shepshed residents Amy Turlington and her Mum. On her own initiative, Amy has done a survey about what young people living in the town think about Shepshed and any changes they would like to see.

As well as carrying out this survey, Amy looks after her mum, works part-time, attends De Lisle school and also does some volunteering.

Amy also recently won the Young Person of the Year Award 2011 from the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire in recognition of everything she does for those around her.

I was pleased to be able to put Amy in touch with the Shepshed Plan Group so they can talk to each

other about their survey results. I am looking forward to hearing the conclusions from the Plan Group in due course.

Finally, following our recent local elections there are a number of newly elected and re-elected Town Councillors in Shepshed.

Congratulations to them all and I look forward to working with them over the next few years.

Update on the BIFFA application for incinerator

I agree with Fred (Shepshed Eye Issue 5 May 2011- Isn’t cricket a totally bonkers game?)

Here is an update on the Biffa Application for an incinerator development at Newhurst Quarry, Shepshed.

As I see it to play the game of cricket there has to be two sides, one side out on the pitch who are in and the other side in the clubhouse who are out.

Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he goes back to the clubhouse and the next man goes in until he’s out.

When the side that are in are all out, the side that are in the clubhouse are then in and the side that are out must try to get those that are in, out.

Sometimes you get men who are in, not out.

When both sides have been in and out including the not outs, that’s the end of the game.

1. Biffa Appeal. Biffa have appealed against the decision by Leicestershire County Council to refuse their planning application. The appeal is to be decided by means of a Public Inquiry which means an Inspector will be appointed 2. New Biffa Application. Biffa have submitted a new application although we believe there is little change except for proposals to mitigate the impact on Garendon Park and to offer funds to improve the setting of the Park and its listed buildings to overcome English Heritage objections. Details of the new application can be found on the Leicestershire County Council Planning Application website. The Application Number is 2011/C472/02 though there is no information yet as to when the Consultation will commence.

3. Environment Agency Permit.

The final decision on the Permit has been delayed because of the high number of representations made which the Permitting Team is now reviewing. The final decision is not now expected until the end of May. The delay gives us a little optimism that a Permit will be refused, but we remain sceptical.

If the Permit is granted we plan to apply for a Judicial Review and we are seeking advice from a group of environmental lawyers who are incinerator specialists. The initial advice will be free, but if we proceed to a Judicial Review the costs can be substantial.

4. Financial Situation. SAIG is running on empty! Although collections have been made in the past, all funds have been used for leaflets, website costs and stationery expenditure (including paper, computer ink and photocopying). New recycling deal signed A NEW recycling contract has been signed which could generate an additional £2 million income for Charnwood Borough Council over the next six years.

Viridor won the contract to transport and sort the 16,000 tonnes of mixed recycled waste produced in the Borough each year.

The new service will see the introduction of new recycling wheelie bins for glass, plastic, aluminium and steel cans, mixed paper and cardboard – replacing the current purple sacks and recycling boxes.

They will be rolled out across the Borough over a six-week period starting on September 5.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for Cleansing and Open Spaces, said: “This new contract represents an excellent piece of business for both the Council and Viridor and means we can further boost our already excellent recycling service.

“The new wheelie bins will provide a more convenient and cost-effective service and will make recycling even easier for our residents.

New badminton sessions - no strings attached!

NEW badminton sessions are being launched in Charnwood to court more people into playing the sport.

Most of my work on behalf of the residents of Shepshed involves housing problems. Recently the major problems have been neighbour noise and I have been liaising with Charnwood Environmental and Charnwood Neighbourhood Housing department to resolve these problems.

The trees which I managed to get planted in front of the MP Nicky Morgan, Christine Radford and Cllr. Joan Tassell at the exhibition Council owned flats on Brook Street are starting into flower and should be a considerable improvement to the area.

A new planning application for approximately 65 houses will soon be lodged with Charnwood on land between Iveshead Road and Brick Kiln Lane. The proposed developer Bloor held a public exhibition on May 4th to enable local residents to view their proposals. Nicky Morgan MP and Councillor Joan Tassell and I were able to meet with the developers and local residents to listen to their opinions and concerns. It is hoped that these have been taken on board by the developer, we await developments.

I work closely with the Town Council and at all times I will only support any proposals which will have no detrimental effect to Shepshed and its residents.

“The new contract and the changes to collections will help us do just that. We are pleased to appoint Viridor to help further boost our recycling performance.”

June Barlow, Viridor’s tender manager, said: “Charnwood has already a very good recycling record and the new contract with us will build on that by providing them with a good quality and costeffective service.

“Through our Crayford facility Viridor recovers nearly half a million tonnes of valuable resources which can then be sent to manufacturers to produce new products and packaging, helping the UK become more resource efficient.”

Charnwood Borough Council is running No Strings Badminton at Soar Valley Leisure Centre in Mountsorrel.

It is designed to appeal to total beginners who want to learn how to play and more experienced players who want to brush up on their skills.

The session benefits from having a co-ordinator who will organise the games and give tips and advice on an informal basis. If you’re a beginner or if you play on a regular basis then this is for you.

Funeral bier has been refurbished

Back in February, Shepshed Eye included a snippet about a funeral bier being purchased from Shepshed Cemetery by Mr & Mrs Scroby for their Willows Natural Burial Ground at South Croxton.

Naughty knickers and clever corsets seduce visitors!

Unusual items of underwear including an inflatable bra from the 1950s and a corset busk stamped with a secret love message will be featured in a fascinating new exhibition.

The exhibition which charts the changes in underwear over the last three hundred years is going on display at Snibston Discovery Museum on Saturday 28th May. Entitled ‘Support and Seduction’, the exhibition depicts the changes in fashionable, practical, alluring and sporting underwear from the 18th century to the present day.

The exhibition will display over 200 individual items of male and female underwear, some from Leicestershire’s famous Symington Collection of corsetry which has an international reputation.

The exhibition is arranged in seven themes: Allure, Shape Makers, Doctor’s Orders, Super-Modern Wardrobe, Cleanliness is next to Godliness and Sporting Underwear – all them with their own wonderful examples of the forever evolving undergarments.

The oldest items on display are a woman’s corset from the 1770s and a man’s shirt from the 1780s. The most recent garments are items from Next’s current lingerie collection.

The exhibition includes images from the Symington collection and from the Wolsey archive at the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland and, from the Next collection which is curated by Leicestershire County Council’s Museum’s Service.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said: “Underwear is important to us all not only because it’s something that we all wear but also because it has been vital to Leicestershire’s local economy through companies like Wolsey, Symington, Corah’s and many others. This tradition continues in Leicestershire with Next and innovation is being driven through the contour fashion design course at De Montfort University.

“The exhibition reflects changing styles of and attitudes to underwear and charts the technological and design changes that influence the first things that we put on in the morning. Snibston holds one of the finest collections of fashion and clothing outside of London and I would urge everyone to go along to the museum and see this amazing exhibition.”

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week: 19-25 June

News from Charnwood BRAS National Breastfeeding Awareness Week runs from 19th to 25th June 2011. There are many events taking place around Charnwood and also throughout the country.

The start of the week is being marked with a walk in Bradgate Park on Monday 19th June.

Participants are invited to meet at the Newtown Linford entrance at 10am for a short walk with breastfeeding mothers, babies, partners, health professionals and breast feeding peer supporters, including Charnwood BRAS (Breastfeeding Reassurance And Support) group.

The organisers hope to match or exceed the success of last year’s walk which attracted a lot of people and also plenty of media coverage. The aim of the walk is to increase awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding, both for mothers and their babies.

The breastfeeding week walk originated with the North West Leicestershire breastfeeding peer support team, Bosom Buddies, two years ago and has now extended to include all peer supporter groups in the county. Carol Fishwick, Leicestershire’s Infant Feeding Co-ordinator, is involved with coordinating the peer supporter groups who provide reassurance, support and information to pregnant ladies and breastfeeding mums.

Health Visiting teams and family outreach workers are putting on events throughout the county to mark National Breastfeeding Awareness week.

Joanne Talbot, a member of Charnwood’s Health Visiting team, coordinates the Charnwood BRAS group volunteers and is helping to organise the Bradgate Park walk. Joanne says “There is so much support out there for breastfeeding mothers to ensure that as many babies as possible are given the best start in life. The breastfeeding awareness week events are designed to ensure families know how to access this support as well as promoting the benefits of breastfeeding”.

Right royal opening for Rainbows new kitchen

On Monday, May 23, Fiona Cairns – the highly acclaimed cake designer and baker for the recent Royal wedding – officially opened the brand new kitchen at Rainbows Hospice for Children & Young People in Loughborough.

Fiona, who spent five weeks creating the eight-tier cake for Prince William’s wedding to Catherine Middleton last month, is from Leicestershire and opened the state-of-the-art kitchen by decorating cakes alongside children from Rainbows. And – especially for the opening – Fiona baked a special Rainbows cake, which featured the hospice’s logo.

The brand new kitchen is the final refurbishment to be made to the hospice following the opening of the Building for the Future £4million therapy suite earlier this year. The impressive state-of-the-art kitchen boasts brand new equipment, including ovens and fridges, a new buffet bar and even a separate, smaller kitchen for parents and families to enjoy. The kitchen has also been given a complete colour-scheme makeover with brand new bespoke wallpaper, which was donated by ohpopsi.com.

Margaret Hill, Chef at Rainbows, said: “We’re really pleased with the brand new kitchen facilities, which will enable us to cater for the additional children and young people we’re able to care for since the opening of the new bedrooms and therapy wing earlier this year.

“The new facilities – especially the new smaller kitchen area – provide additional space for the children, young people, staff and parents to be together.

“Once again we are very grateful for all the donations Rainbows receives each year so that projects such as the new kitchen can be completed – each donation makes a difference to the life-limited children and young people that visit us.”

Fair traders get set for eco-friendly market A FAIR trader is urging shoppers to support local ecofriendly businesses at Charnwood’s first-ever specialist ‘green’ market.

Jane Olley, director of Sileby-based Fairtrade and organic women’s clothing brand Annie Greenabelle, will have a stall at the Green and Ethical Market in Loughborough Market Place between 9am-4pm on Wednesday, June 8, 2011.

The market, organised by Charnwood Borough Council, is designed to promote responsibly produced and sustainable goods and to support the ‘Buy Local’ campaign by focusing on local producers.

Jane, whose company supplies Topshop and boutiques throughout the world, said: “It was on a trip to India to source the Fairtrade cotton that I made up my mind that our fabric was going to be organic as well.

“Like many I had not really considered the benefits of organic cotton. It is so much better for the environment.

“This is something that I became aware of whilst travelling in India. I learnt huge amounts of chemicals were used in cotton production and these were polluting communities’ water systems and making people ill.

“I love knowing that we are helping young girls out in India have a better standard of life.

“The manufacturing industry in Leicester has also been hard hit in the last few years with much of the production being moved off shore where wages are cheaper. We run a Fairtrade factory here in Leicestershire and our production helps secure 29 jobs.”

The market will also feature a range of crafts, food and environmental displays.

Message from Shepshed Branch Labour Party

Hard-fought local election campaign in Shepshed Shepshed’s Labour Party candidates who stood in the recent Borough Council and Town Council elections conducted a hardfought campaign which resulted in the election of one Borough Councillor and five Town Councillors.

Claire Poole, in Shepshed East, was successfully elected to Charnwood Borough Council following a close-fought contest with the Conservative candidates. Claire finished second with Jane Lennie narrowly missing out in third position.

In another close ballot in Shepshed West, Glenys Timson and Mark Fox almost gained enough votes to take seats from two established Conservative candidates.

Claire Poole (pictured) said: “I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and would like to assure all the people of Shepshed that I will be working hard on their behalf over the next four years.”

In the Shepshed Town Council elections five Labour candidates were elected. They were Claire Poole and Jane Lennie for Shepshed East and Barry Perkins, Glenys Timson and Robert Ewing for Shepshed West. Despite polling sigificant numbers of votes Richard Tabberer and Stephen Londesborough were narrowly beaten in Shepshed East.

All of the Labour Party candidates would like to thank all those who supported them and will be taking every opportunity to work for the benefit of Shepshed wherever they can. These results indicate growing support for the Labour Party in Shepshed and we look forward to being able to demonstrate this at future elections. Watch What You Post On Social Network Sites When On Holiday Equifax Warns Social Networkers Not To Openly Invite Burglars into Their Home

ID fraud expert, Equifax warns holidaymakers to check the privacy settings on their social media accounts to reduce the risk of burglary while they are away. Burglars are very canny and can track down an individual’s address using information displayed publicly on social networking sites.

Neil Munroe, external affairs director for Equifax says “People need to think carefully before they post holiday plans on social networking sites, making their home a potential target for burglars. Equifax research* shows that 19% of respondents don’t use privacy settings on their social networking sites with 50% admitting not regularly reviewing their privacy settings, leaving them vulnerable to thieves.

“Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, are a gift for criminals looking for personal information on unwitting victims. It may seem harmless, but updating Facebook or Twitter with messages such as, “packing for holiday” or “in Hawaii for the next two weeks” could be a green light to burglars. A simple check on a family name and other personal details can help criminals identify a home address to burgle or commit ID Theft.”

Munroe concludes, “The average Facebook user has 130** friends, but many people don’t bother with their privacy settings, leaving their private information available to a vast number of strangers and potential fraudsters. We advise people to look through their friends list and consider how many of those people they really trust with their private details. Horace Lister’s autobiography tells the reader all about his distinguished career in mining.

Here is how Dr.Brian Lord describes the book: I’ve known Horace Lister since our school days in Burnley, Lancashire. We both went into the pits around the same time and both of us qualified as mine managers about the same time. Our careers overlapped at Collieries in Burnley. A large measure of my own successful career is because when I was underground shovelling stone one day - Horace suddenly appeared out of the dark and said ‘don’t shovel too hard Brian - if you do the bosses will always keep you on a shovel’ (there was a phrase at the time: - once a backener always a backener!) Horace will explain to you in the book what a backener was.

Horace and I coming together to do this book, is one of those very spooky coincidences you hear about.

Let me explain: We had not seen one another for fifty years, when out of the blue I got one of those ‘fishing’ emails ‘Did I remember Horace Lister from Burnley?’ Of course I did and we eventually met up together with our wives and only then realised what a weird set of coincidences we had lived through without us knowing. viz: . On the day of the Hapton Valley Colliery explosion on March 22nd 1962 Horace was acting manager and was blown up on the coal face. I was due to be at the pit that week but took some leave owed to me and was on holiday (hearing news of the explosion on the car radio). I cut the holiday short and was involved in gathering of material for the subsequent public inquiry. Neither of us knew the other was there. . On October 26th 1966 I was underground at a mine in the next valley to Aberfan, South Wales on the day of a surface mud-slide disaster that killed over one hundred men women and children. I was allowed on site as a trained mines rescue person. The coincidence was that unknown to me - Horace was also on site with his team of men from another nearby colliery - helping with the rescue! As with Hapton Valley, neither of us knew the other was there. . The third coincidence is that after both our varied and geographically diverse careers - as far apart as the North East and Kent - during the last twenty years we have lived local to one another - as near as five miles away - without being aware of it. However, in 2009 I got the email previously mentioned, we met up again and the idea of this book was born.

I commend this book to you as a remarkable record of the life of a great character who still has a pin-sharp memory of his pit days. It contains an eclectic mix of emotional stories ranging from the hilarious to deeply tragic. In my view the core of these stories would form the basis for award winning TV or film scripts; which are sadly lacking in the British media these days.

New Cabinet for Charnwood Campaign launched to get Britain SHARING

CHARNWOOD Borough Council has elected a new leader and cabinet to steer the authority through the next four years.

Charnwood Conservative Group leader Councillor David Slater was officially elected as the new Council leader at the Annual Council Meeting on Monday, May 16. He takes over from Mike Preston who had to step down due to ill health.

Councillor Stephen Hampson was appointed deputy leader and portfolio holder for Strategic Support as part of a nine-strong cabinet.

Mr Slater, who will hold the portfolio for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: “We need to continue to keep the Council in a strong position to deal with the national economic climate and be able to respond effectively to residents’ needs.

“Our cabinet will be working to achieve the aims set out in our Corporate Plan. In addition to building a strong and better Council, we will focus on people, prosperity, place and the environment.”

Apples This tale comes from a Roman Catholic elementary school. . .

Up at the head table in the school cafeteria, one of the nuns had placed a big bowl of bright red, fresh, juicy apples. Beside the bowl, she placed a note which read, “Take only one. Remember, God is watching.”

At the other end of the table was a bowl full of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, still warm from the oven. Beside the bowl lay a little note scrawled in a child’s handwriting which read: “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”

Magic Evening When the local branch of Gillian Carter Breakthrough Breast Cancer Breakthrough Breast organised a sponsored walk Cancer receives a around Watermead Country cheque for £216 from Park earlier this spring, several Soar Valley President members of the Rotary Club Norman Ellis of the Soar Valley stepped forward to help and had an enjoyable morning helping to raise funds.

At the club meeting on Monday May 9th Gillian Carter, Vice Chairman of the North Leicestershire branch of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, joined the Soar Valley meeting to explain the valuable work that her charity was funding and the significant progress that was being made in understanding the causes of the disease and improving treatment.

She also talked about the need for continuing fund raising and was promised Rotary help to deliver eight sacks of bras that will be used later this year as part of an attempt to break the world record for the longest line of connected bras ever assembled.

After her informative and entertaining talk she was presented with a cheque for £216 by Rotary President Norman Ellis as the proceeds from the Rotary efforts at Watermead Country Park

It’s a Magical Life!

Says Philosophical Phyllis ‘Synchronicity’ I would very much like you to send in instances of ‘Synchronicity’ that happen in your life that would be suitable for publication.

Many years ago a Radio 2 presenter gave out many very interesting ones and I’m sure amongst our readership in Shepshed we could find some good ones?

One of mine that sticks in my mind, (the older I get - my memory loses a lot!) is when one Easter Sunday when having a grandson for the day.

I really wanted to see even part of a film that was on that afternoon about Jesus’ last day. It was proving difficult as ‘little un’ wanted to watch an old video of The Simpson’s series.

So I put it in the machine and it was not wound back to the beginning – there were several episodes on it. I pressed play anyway – and was taken aback when immediately the characters were talking about the Crucifixion.

On Monday 9th May one of our own members Rotarian P. Marriott demonstrated his ability as a magician. Apparently he was a member of The Magic Circle at a very young age but has not kept up his involvement due to pressure of work. He certainly had more than a trick or two up his sleeve.

It was really a wonderful evening.

How did he make the elephant disappear?

Park visit Rotary clubs across the country try to respond to all sorts of challenges and are very involved with young people and adults who experience learning difficulties or have physical handicaps which may prevent them participating in activities enjoyed by everyone else. Our club is no different and for a few years now we have been taking a few young people to Drayton Manor Park near Tamworth providing them, on a day exclusively set aside for Rotary clubs, with the opportunity to ‘enjoy’ some of - to me - the most frightening rides possible. Not all the youngsters accept every challenge.

Most of them are much braver though than the accompanying Rotarians. They are well cared for by qualified and understanding staff and all of them in different ways enjoy the day and get a lot from it.

The Calvert Trust Another aspect of Rotary’s commitment to the disabled is our involvement with the Calvert Trust and we have provided opportunities for local handicapped young people to experience activities to which they normally do not have access.

The Calvert Trust aims to enable

people with disabilities , together with their families to achieve their potential through the challenge of out door adventure in the countryside. There are several Calvert Trust centres in the U.K and we have been using one near Keswick in the Lake District for 16 years.

Set in a beautiful location the aim is to utilise nature’s challenges be they on horseback, on a rockface - even in a wheelchair- up a mountain, on and in the lakes.

Climbing, abseiling, horse-riding, canoeing, sailing, walking and cycling in the beautiful Lake District, with excellent appropriate accommodation and wonderful food, is the experience of a lifetime.

The transformation which the participants experience over the period of a week is remarkable.

The shy nervous group on the first Saturday are so well encouraged and looked after that they flourish and complete tasks which they had always believed to be beyond them.

One member of The Shepshed Club, Rotarian Janet Sinclair, was a member of the team of Rotarians who support the highly qualified instructors. With some of the participants experiencing very severe problems the staffing ratio is very high - 11 Rotarians and 8 Rotaractors), in addition to the qualified staff, looked after 27 candidates. It’s a highly organised activity. The Rotary Club of Shepshed sponsors Janet as she is experienced in this commitment and is an accomplished horsewoman. The Shepshed Building Society provided large Easter Eggs for each participant and we are grateful to them for this gesture which meant such a lot.

MP Nicky Morgan has welcomed the start of building work on Dogs Trust Loughborough as bringing significant benefits to the local area.

Due to open in spring 2012, Dogs Trust Loughborough will be a state of the art Rehoming Centre providing at least 25 jobs for local people.

The charity aims to build the most eco-friendly animal rescue centre in the world .Nicky has met with Dogs Trust this morning to discuss the centre’s role in the community.

“I was delighted to hear Dogs Trust Loughborough will be opening next year. The centre will be a real boost for Loughborough, bringing with it the benefits of new jobs an education facility and a chance for local people to get involved by volunteering in the community. Dogs Trust do a fantastic job promoting dog welfare and I believe the centre will be a credit to the community”, Mrs Morgan said.

Nicky Morgan MP with illustrations of the proposed Dogs’ Trust Rehoming centre at Wymeswold Hosting the World’s most environmentally sustainable animal rescue centre will help establish Loughborough’s position on the map as forward thinking, eco friendly town”, she said.

Featuring a biomass boiler, green roofs, under-floor heating, solar panels and a rainwater recycling system, the Rehoming Centre will be able to look after around 135 dogs at any one time.

The new Rehoming Centre will also create 25 new jobs ranging from Managers, Canine Carers and maintenance staff. The Centre has already employed a full time Education Officer who is visiting schools across the East Midlands to teach children about safety around dogs and the importance of responsible dog ownership.

Shepshed History Society

Black Annis ‘stole children, pulled them to bits and ate them!’

Tuesday 10th May saw the Shepshed History Society enjoying a very entertaining talk given by Mr. Robert Gregory, a blue badge guide for Leicester.

His topic was Leicestershire’s Naughty People. He first began by telling the history of Leicester Prison and how it is always mistaken for Leicester Castle. Then he went into detail how prisoners have escaped this impressive fortress despite the thickness of the wall and also gave the gory details of many executions. In fact several tales of various villains were narrated and one in particular was Black Annis, who lived in a cave and would steal children, pull Black Annis - not the best person to them to bits and eat them. The employ as a babysitter cave is still in existence in a private garden today.

Next month’s speaker is Mr. Ken Day, a firm favourite with the society.

For the fee of £2 new members are always welcome, meetings are held at the Glenmore Centre every second Tuesday in the month starting at 7.30pm and ample parking space is available.

Fashion Show for Newcroft was a fantastic success!

Friends of Newcroft held a fashion show evening earlier this month which was a huge success.

We sold 110 tickets to staff, parents and friends who all came to enjoy a show with models wearing a huge variety of outfits, all from leading high Street brands at massively discounted prices.

We had a raffle and refreshments which rounded the night off perfectly.

We raised a grand total of £752, which will help to buy the school more books and IT equipment, as well as funding a new bike shelter.

A huge ‘Thank You’ must go out to everyone who helped to make the night such a fantastic success.

We had excellent feedback about the evening and have already started to plan our next fashion show - so watch this space for more forthcoming events.

The members of Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club sponsored a young undergraduate who was running the London Marathon for Oxfam and on Tuesday she came to the club’s weekly meeting to show members her medal and to talk about the experience.

Jennifer Spencer is in her final year of a Microbiology degree course at Nottingham University’s Sutton Bonington campus and the Rotarians donated £100 towards her target of £2000 which was going to four Oxfam projects in Ethiopia, Honduras, Tanzania and Shi Lanka, all connected to increasing agricultural production.

Jennifer completed the Marathon in 4h 3m and has already applied to enter again next year to try to better that time. She came to the Whitehouse Hotel in Kegworth to thank the members for their support and gave an illustrated talk about her day. A vote of thanks was proposed by Rotarian Fred Thompson. The Rotary Club meets every Tuesday at the Whitehouse Hotel in Kegworth at 7.30 for 8.00pm and anyone is welcome to come along to find out more about Rotary activities.

Nordic Walking is poles apart A SERIES of super fat-burning Nordic walking sessions are being held in Charnwood.

Charnwood Borough Council’s Active Together team is running the sessions on Saturday mornings from 10.15am11.15am from May 28 until July 2. The walks start from the Main Street car park in Woodhouse Eaves, opposite the Cottage Surgery.

Nordic walkers use poles to help tone upper body muscles, as well as legs, while the poles help propel the walker along which means they work harder although the exercise feels less strenuous.

There are also monthly taster sessions running on Sundays as part of Charnwood Guided walks programme.

Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Nordic walking burns more calories than normal walking and is great for people with neck, shoulder and back problems. It is also easier on the knees and joints than normal walking. “The Council runs a series of walks through our extensive Walking For Health programme which is part of our commitment to help residents improve their health and well-being.�

Sessions cost just ÂŁ1 and poles are provided. Booking is essential as places are limited.

County Councillor’s Column from Christine Radford

As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council.

The proposed new retail outlet at 25 Charnwood Road was approved by Charnwood Borough Council and I am pleased to report that following my concerns regarding traffic that a zebra crossing is to be provided as part of the development.

Following representation by local residents, the Highways Department have agreed to put on the agenda of forth coming works yellow lines at the junction of Forman Road and Leicester Road, yellow lines at the junction of Station Close and Charnwood Road. I am still working with officers regarding the concerns of residents regarding the junctions at Paterson Place and Hathern Road and Weavers Way Estate and Charnwood Road.

I am sure there are many more areas of concern around ill considered parking which causes major problems to the local residents.

Speeding traffic around residential streets seems to be increasing now the nights are getting lighter, concerns raised are forwarded to the police for speed checks and County Highways to see what measures can be taken to alleviate the problem.

With the proposed planning application for 65 houses at the top of Iveshead Road, residents have been in contact regarding the amount of extra traffic and the already existing problem with speeding traffic, these concerns have been raised with the police and County Highways.

The proposed extension of the weight restrictions on roads around Shepshed has now got to last stage before going out to public consultation.

It is hoped that if given the go ahead it will stop large vehicles over 7.5 tonnes using Shepshed as a through route.

I have been in contact with the Clerk to Shepshed Town Council to arrange a meeting with myself and officers from County Highways to show and explain the proposals to the Town Council at a future meeting.

Fathers and daughters A young father was taking care of his baby daughter while his wife went to town shopping.

He decided to go fishing and he had to take the toddler along. “I’ll never take her along with me again!” he told his wife that evening. “I didn’t catch a thing!”

“Oh, next time I’m sure she’ll be quiet and not scare the fish away,” his wife said. The father said gloomily. “No, it wasn’t that. She ate all the bait.”
