BARRATT AND DAVID WILSON HOMES RAISE OVER £15K FOR RAINBOWS HOSPICE BARRATT and David Wilson Homes North Midlands has raised over £15,000 for its 2020 Charity of the Year, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.

The money raised will go towards providing vital care and support to families impacted by life-limiting conditions Fundraising efforts by Barratt and David Wilson Homes included a virtual 258-mile challenge and a socially-distanced company golf day in September.

TIM GARRATT ENDS HIS TIME AT INNES ENGLAND CHAIRMAN of Innes England Tim Garratt has left the firm after 21 years.

Tim, who was formerly managing director for five years with Innes England, left the business on 31 December 2020.

Innes England MD Matthew Hannah announced the news of Tim’s departure stating that there had been an understanding since mid2019 that Tim would leave the business to pursue other business interests.

Matt said: “We would like to thank Tim for his huge commitment to Innes England which spans Innes England MD Matthew Hannah more than two decades. He has been a well-known figure in the East Midlands property scene and we wish him well.

“Tim has been working on some projects away from our business including some large strategic land holdings and on potential acquisitions in the United States.

“He will be continuing to provide a service to some of his old established clients. Innes England will be working jointly in some instances to deliver agency and related services.”

Tim said: “I was always knew that having stepped down as MD, I needed to allow the remaining partners to run the business as they wanted to. I have had the privilege of working with some really talented people and I will miss them all. I wish the business every success for the future and will be looking forward to working with Matt and the team on some projects going forwards.”

Funding approved for new T Level Centre in Loughborough

Stamp Duty holiday cliff-edge must be mitigated to avoid serious fallout, says tax expert FOLLOWING WEEKS of mounting pressure on the government to extend the Stamp Duty holiday in the UK beyond the current March 31st deadline, the House of Commons has announced that an extension will be debated in parliament.

The stamp duty holiday means homebuyers across England and Northern Ireland pay no stamp duty when purchasing homes up to a value of £500,000, with a reduced rate for homes above that. For someone buying a £500,000 property, the saving is worth £15,000.

The end of the holiday on 31 March 2021 has led to a backlog in transactions as the logistics of the housing market have not been able to keep up with demand, whilst many others have seen agreed upon deals fall through as homebuyers and sellers have pulled out amidst concerns that the transaction will not be completed prior to March 31st.

Furthermore, forecasters have predicted a rapid downturn in the housing market in 2021, with the stamp duty holiday set to expire and unemployment likely to rise when the furlough scheme ends in April. This has overwhelmed conveyancing, surveying, mortgage and search services, with Rightmove’s data shows a logjam of 650,000 properties changing hands, many of which will not complete before the end of the stamp duty holiday.

David Hannah, Founder and Principal Consultant of Cornerstone Tax, discusses what can be done to prevent the cliff-edge of those who believe they will benefit from missing out, and to soften the drop in demand: “It is excellent to hear that parliament is finally going to debate a possible extension of the Stamp Duty holiday. The approaching end of the stamp duty holiday is already having a profound effect on the property market, sale collapses are approaching record highs and solicitors and conveyancers are already reporting that they expect to see a considerable drop in demand very soon. Many are expecting to be without anything to do by mid-February.

“Calls to make the holiday permanent or scrap the tax altogether seem unrealistic given the levels of public debt and the £12 billion tax take it generates each year, but having such a strict cut-off point, particularly in such a turbulent and difficult housing market and economic climate could result in a catastrophic drop in demand and prices.

“Home ownership is key to the UK economy, upward mobility and the aspirations of many that are currently struggling to get on the property ladder. Not only this but making it easier to move house without being penalised for doing so will make it easier to move to areas of growth and where jobs are. Especially important as we see a de-urbanisation and migration away from cities in the wake of the pandemic.”

UK construction output growth accelerates in November 2020, says GlobalData MOUSTAFA ALI, Economist at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view on the outlook for the UK construction industry: A £2.3 MILLION project, supported by the Department for Education, has been approved to create a state-of-the-art T Level Centre at Loughborough College.

The project will see the creation of a brand new building, opposite the Radmoor Centre, providing cutting edge facilities and high-quality, flexible teaching and learning spaces to specifically meet the needs of new T Level qualifications.

The new building will also create a prominent, contemporary ‘gateway’ to the College’s campus on Epinal Way. The College is submitting a planning application to Charnwood Borough Council and, if approved, the centre could be open by April 2022.

The College will begin delivering T Levels this September in existing facilities and will focus on four areas – digital, construction, health and science and education and childcare.

T Levels are technical alternatives to A Levels, combining classroom theory, practical learning and an industry placement of at least 45 days where students will build the knowledge and skills they need in a workplace environment.

“UK construction output continued its recovery in November, but GlobalData holds its estimate that output for the year, as a whole, will contract at its fastest ever rate of 15.1%. The output increase of 1.9% month on month in November 2020 was higher than the market consensus forecast of 0.5%, and faster than the monthly October growth figure of 1.5%. Despite the new lockdown measures imposed in November and Brexit uncertainty, the industry continued its recovery.

“The construction industry was the best performing in November 2020 and outperformed the wider economy, which contracted by 2.6%. While the slowdown will likely translate into sluggish activity for December 2020, the outlook is positive for the industry in 2021. Vaccine rollout coupled with the government’s plans to accelerate investments infrastructure and housing will support industry growth in 2021. GlobalData expects output to increase by 6.8% in 2021.

“With the strong recovery seen over the last seven months, construction output was 0.6% above the pre-COVID peak in February, with growth strongest in repair and maintenance works, which was 7.4% above its preCOVID peak. Overall, construction output was down 1.4% on a yearly basis in November 2020.”

Glenigan Index Rising Covid-19 infections and fears of a no-deal Brexit severely impact Q4 2020 construction activity figures THE VALUE of underlying construction projects (under £100 million in value) starting on-site during the final quarter of 2020 was 11% lower than a year ago and 18% lower than the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Residential construction work commencing on-site fell 6% against the previous year, and declined 4% against the preceding three month period.

The value of non-residential construction project-starts fell 16% against the previous year, but increased 2% on the preceding three months.

In contrast to strong increases in previous months, civil engineering project-starts declined 6% against the previous year and by 12% compared to the preceding three months.

Link to the full text and figures Rhys Gadsby, Glenigan’s Economic Analyst, commented on this month’s figures: “Project-starts declined sharply in December, but still finished the year above the low-points during the first lockdown in the Spring.

This was partially due to a natural slowdown heading to the Christmas period, but the impending risk of a no-deal Brexit as well as rising COVID-19 cases will undoubtedly have halted many construction projects progressing to site. As a result project-starts during the final quarter were 11% lower than a year ago.

Heading into 2021, the new national lockdown should not have the same adverse effect on construction-starts as the first lockdown in the Spring of 2020, with official guidance stating that construction “is essential to keeping the country operating.

In addition the trade agreement now secured with the European Union should help reduce concerns of potential disruptions and additional costs to materials that the industry feared towards the end of 2020.”

Sector performance “The value of residential project-starts during Q4 2020 fell 6% against the previous year and 4% compared to the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis. The decline against the previous year was due to private housing project-starts declining 10% against the previous year.

In contrast, social housing work commencing on-site climbed 11% against the previous year. Interestingly, the opposite occurred compared to the preceding three month period. While social housing project-starts declined by a fifth, private housing project-starts increased by 4%.”

“Non-residential projects commencing on-site declined 16% compared to a year ago, despite a 2% increase against the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis. Most non-residential sectors experienced a decline against the previous year, including projects for the hotel & leisure sector which experienced the greatest decline of any sector during the period (58%). Hotel & leisure project-starts remained unchanged compared to the preceding three months. Retail project-starts also suffered, with a decline of 37% against the previous year and 30% compared to the preceding three months.

“In contrast, two sectors achieved good growth during the final quarter of 2020. In particular, health starts doubled against the previous year, despite a 6% fall compared to the preceding three month period. This was the greatest growth of any sector against the preceding year. Similarly, community & amenity project-starts climbed 85% against the previous year, despite a 10% fall compared to the preceding three months.

Regional performance “The value of project-starts in the majority of UK regions declined against the previous year. The South East and Wales experienced the greatest declines against the previous year, with the value of project-starts falling 28% for both regions. Project-starts also declined sharply in the East Midlands and London, declining 26% and 22% respectively.”

IHS MARKIT Construction sector recovery continues in December, led by house building • OUTPUT EXPANSION MAINTAINED FOR THE SEVENTH MONTH IN A ROW • EMPLOYMENT RETURNS TO GROWTH AMID STRONG RISE IN NEW ORDERS • SUPPLY SHORTAGES PUSH UP INPUT COSTS IN DECEMBER UK CONSTRUCTION companies recorded a sustained rebound in business activity during December, according to the latest PMI® data compiled by IHS Markit.

Stronger order books helped to drive the recovery across the construction sector, with survey respondents often citing work on projects that had been delayed earlier in 2020.

Higher levels of demand led to a slight rise in employment numbers and greater demand for construction inputs in December. However, stretched supply chains and delays at UK ports resulted in longer delivery times and the fastest rate of input cost inflation since April 2019.

The headline seasonally adjusted IHS Markit/CIPS UK Construction Total Activity Index posted 54.6 in December, little-changed from 54.7 in November and above the crucial 50.0 no-change threshold for the seventh consecutive month.

Increased construction activity primarily reflected another sharp rise in house building during December (index at 61.9). Commercial activity also expanded (51.2), but the rate of growth eased to its lowest since the recovery began last June.

Civil engineering was the weakestperforming category (48.0), with activity falling for the fourth time in the past five months.

Total new orders increased at a strong pace in December, which extended the current period of expansion to seven months. Survey respondents noted improving client demand, alongside a boost from new business wins on construction projects that had been deferred at the start of the pandemic.

Rising workloads contributed to a sharp increase in purchasing activity at the end of 2020, with the rate of expansion holding close to November’s six-year high. Some construction companies also cited efforts to bring forward input buying due to concerns about longer lead times among suppliers. The latest downturn in vendor performance was the sharpest since June 2020 and more marked than any seen prior to the pandemic.

Purchasing prices increased at the steepest pace for just under two years, reflecting supply shortages and strong demand for construction inputs. Survey respondents often cited rising prices for timber and

steel.

December data indicated a return to jobs growth in the construction sector, although the rate of expansion was only marginal.

Additional staff hiring reflected forthcoming new projects and improved confidence about the business outlook. Exactly half of the survey panel (50%) forecast a rise in business activity over the course of 2021, while only 10% anticipate a decline, which signalled the strongest optimism across the construction sector since April 2017.

Tim Moore, Economics Director at IHS Markit, which compiles the survey: “December data illustrated a positive end to the year for the UK construction sector, mostly fuelled by a sharp rebound in house building. Overall output growth has slowed in comparison to the catchup phase last summer, but now it is encouraging to see the recovery driven by new projects and stronger underlying demand.

“A sustained improvement in construction order books resulted in a rise in employment numbers for the first time in nearly two years and the most optimistic growth expectations since April 2017.

Construction companies are hopeful that higher demand will broaden out beyond residential projects in the next 12 months, led by infrastructure spending and a potential rebound in new commercial work from the depressed levels seen during the pandemic.

“Transport delays and a lack of stock among suppliers were the main difficulties reported by UK construction firms at the end of 2020, which contributed to the

fastest rise in purchasing prices for nearly two years.”

Duncan Brock, Group Director at the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply: “Some positive news for the construction sector in December as the uplift from summer’s close continued through to the end of 2020 and new order levels increased for the seventh successive month. Longterm prospects came to fruition and halted projects started again as clients became more optimistic after the covid hiatus. To meet this demand head-on, builders opted for job creation for the first time in 21 months to increase previously paredback capacity.

“Further down the line, with purchasing growth close to its highest for six years, supply chains were groaning at the seams and delivery times increased to the most dramatic extent for six months. Low availability for finished products and raw materials as a result of port disruptions added to builders’ woes as suppliers named their price for goods in acutely short supply and input price inflation increased to its highest level since April 2019.

“Once again residential building was the strongest sector and construction companies focussed on this segment seem resilient for now. As the appetite for building resources grows in the first quarter of the year however, suppliers will find it difficult to ramp up production quickly to pre-pandemic levels, so we could see even longer delivery times potentially delaying some building projects as post-Brexit disruption also remains an everpresent threat.”

Housing market activity continues to rise but momentum is easing SALES ACTIVITY continues to rise across the housing market according to the December 2020 UK Residential Survey.

However, respondents anticipate the latest lockdown restrictions, related economic challenges and the end of the Stamp Duty holiday to weigh on activity going forward.

Homebuyers are still searching for new properties as +15% of survey participants saw an increase in new buyer enquiries during December. Although still positive, the reading is down from a net balance of +26% in November and has now moderated in five successive reports. Also, the number of new properties being listed for sale picked-up over the month, with a net balance of +7% of respondents reporting an increase.

Growth in the number of appraisals being undertaken has softened over recent months but they remain higher than in the comparable period of 2019, with the December net balance coming in at +7%. Alongside this, agreed sales continued to increase, with +18% of respondents reporting a rise, but again at a slower pace than in November. This is the seventh consecutive positive monthly reading, but growth has eased off relative to the summer and autumn periods. (net balance of +60%) Likely in part linked to the renewed pressures induced by the pandemic in recent weeks, near-term sales expectations slipped further to post a net balance of -22% across the UK and is the weakest since April 2020. Looking further ahead, at the twelve-month time horizon, sales expectations are only marginally negative, posting a net balance of -6%.

House prices continue to increase, with a net balance of +65% of respondents citing a rise in the latest report. The national net balance has now remained between +61% and +65% over the last four months, signalling significant upward pressure on house prices across the UK. London is the only region where house price inflation appears muted, with the latest net balance for the capital showing just +7% (down from +13% previously). Contributors foresee momentum behind house prices fading significantly over the near term, but the twelve-month view remains positive, with a net balance of +24% of respondents anticipating house prices will be higher.

In the lettings market, a headline net balance of +15% of contributors saw tenant demand pick up during December (non-seasonally adjusted monthly series). At the same time, landlord instructions being brought onto the rental market continued to dwindle, with a net balance of -12% of respondents seeing a decline. As a result, rental growth expectations for the coming three months strengthened slightly, as contributors across virtually all parts of the UK envisage rents rising over the near term. As has been the case for a number of months now, London remains a clear exception, where a net balance of -47% of participants anticipate rents declining in the three months ahead.

Simon Rubinsohn, RICS Chief Economist, said: “Although the housing market remains open for business in the midst of the latest national lockdown, there is a sense from respondents to the survey that the new restrictions will still impact on transaction activity over the coming months.

This is most visible in the negative reading for sales expectations over the next three months when typically, with the expiry of the stamp duty holiday approaching, this series would be expected to remain firmly in positive territory.

“Looking beyond this immediate time horizon, the feedback from RICS members is that the uplift in prices over the past year will be sustained, for good or ill, as the macro picture gradually improves on the back of the rollout of the Covid vaccination programme. More significantly, private rents are envisaged to outpace price gain as supply continues to fall short of demand with anecdotal reports of landlords exiting the market.”

Almost 1,000 jobs to be created in Leicestershire as new warehousing approved A NEW distribution warehousing complex is set to be built to the east of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, bringing around 1,000 new jobs to North West Leicestershire.

Hudson Contract highlights help for tradespeople during pandemic HUDSON CONTRACT, the construction industry’s biggest payer of subcontractors, is highlighting the help and support available to tradespeople and their families suffering from mental health or financial problems during the pandemic.

The family-owned group is working with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity to raise awareness of the charity’s vital activities throughout its wide industry network.

More than 2,500 construction SMEs trust Hudson to deliver audit contract and payroll services, bringing the business into direct contact with tens of thousands of subcontractors every week.

Hudson has published an advert for the Lighthouse Club’s Construction Industry Helpline on the back of 18,300 paper tax statements posted this week. The advert will be visible to a further 46,000 people on the company’s online subcontractor portal Hudson Connect.

The industry had an estimated 21,000 work-related cases of stress, anxiety or depression last year, according to the Health and Safety Executive.

The sector has been singled out for a suicide rate three times the national average among UK males.

Ian Anfield, managing director of Hudson Contract, said: “Everyone knows someone who is suffering from stress, anxiety or depression and financial problems are commonplace. The Covid crisis has exacerbated many of these issues with all of us having to operate through considerable challenges and uncertainty. Appropriation of monies PROBLEM:

I work for a building company that has enjoyed quite a long relationship with one particular client. The client is a housing developer operating at the high end of the market constructing one-off bespoke houses.

Although procurement of us precontract has been fine, with every contract awarded having been covered by a purchase order that included terms and conditions, including a price, it is the client’s post-contract administration has not been so good, in particular the accountability of monies paid against each contract and the issue of payment and pay less notices.

However, this has now come to a head because of the pandemic, which has hit our client’s business hard, and its cash-flow has suffered, which has had a knock-on effect on us.

What has happened is that although we have issued regular payment applications for our work, the client has had a tendency to make irregular global payments – that is payments on account against more than one contract. That would not have been so bad if the global payments had identified the contracts that were being paid and / or the payments made had equalled the value of the payment applications which would have allowed easy identification.

We are now at the stage where according to our account records, there is about £96,000 outstanding against the total value of our payment applications, whilst the client is arguing that we have been paid against certain payment applications apart from 2 contracts,

which our client is arguing it is withholding monies due to defects.

The client has never issued any payment or pay less notices and its payment remittances do not allocate which contracts were paid.

What do we do?

RESPONSE:

This pandemic has certainly caused many problems in the construction industry, and unfortunately the effects will be felt for some time after the pandemic is over.

Under each contract you have entered into, save where the contract specifies that the duration of the work is to be less than 45 days or it is agreed that the duration of the work is estimated to be less than 45 days, you are entitled to stage payments, even if the terms and conditions of the contract are silent on stage payments.

You are therefore entitled to issue application for payments and providing the same are valid (having regard to the period and the content of the applications), you are entitled to receive payment unless your client has issued in time a valid payment notice or pay less notice.

As regards to the global payments that your client has made, the general rule in law is that where payments have not been allocated by the payer and there is more than one debt, the payee can exercise its legal right to appropriate those payments to whichever debt it deems fit.

In your situation therefore, you can decide which of the payment applications the payments have been appropriated against, leaving

Vocational training reforms will benefit building industry, says the FMB IMPROVEMENTS to the vocational education system will help address skills gaps in construction and support local builders to train, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) following the Government’s publication of the ‘Skills for Jobs’ White Paper.

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Enhancing apprenticeship opportunities in the construction sector is vital if we are to ‘build back better’ from the coronavirus pandemic, and local builders must be at the forefront of these plans. The White Paper’s intention to create greater parity of esteem between vocational and academic education is an important first step, and will encourage more young people into apprenticeships.

Plans to strengthen the links between employers and colleges will also help builders, and is a measure that the FMB has been calling for in recent years.

Measures such as College Business Centres will provide greater support to employers new to training. While it is important to reflect on the way apprenticeships are delivered, I continue to believe that a high quality placement with a local business that is invested in supporting that person, will lead to the best outcomes for all.”

Berry concluded: “It is welcoming to see the White Paper’s ambitions for employers to be better integrated into the development of Local Skills Improvement Plans. Through this, construction businesses will be given a greater voice to advocate for training in occupations that are in short supply. Sales rising at Topps Tiles

SALES ARE rising at Topps Tiles, the Leicesterheadquartered tile specialist, according to a trading update for the 13 week period ended 26 December 2020.

Retail like-for-like sales increased by 19.9% in the first 13 weeks of the current financial year, with “good growth” in sales across both of the company’s main customer groups, professional fitters and homeowners.

The firm noted that it has repaid a £5 million term loan drawn as part of the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme, and cancelled an unused £5 million revolving credit facility under the same scheme. As such, the company is now debt free.

A NEW 60-home development being built in the historic Leicestershire village of Bottesford will launch in the spring.

Bellway’s The Vale development will consist of two, three, four and five-bedroom houses for sale, as well as nineteen affordable homes for rent or shared ownership.

Construction work recently got underway on the site, which is located on land to the south of Grantham Road, around a mile east of the village centre.

CONSTRUCTION work is now underway on a new housing development in Oadby, where the first properties are set to go on sale next year.

Leicestershire homebuilders extend NHS Major Jaguar Land Rover helping hand for further six months parts centre BARRATT and David Wilson Homes have announced that they will be extending the 5% deposit contribution for NHS workers across Leicestershire.

The leading homebuilders started the scheme last year at the height of the pandemic to thank those working for the NHS. Initially, the scheme was due to finish at the end of December but the support for the country’s NHS heroes was recently extended by an additional six months.

Selected properties are available to purchase using the scheme and homes must complete on or before 18th June 2021.

Since the launch of the scheme, the extra support available across Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ operational areas of Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire and Lincolnshire has led to 224 reservations being made by NHS employees using the scheme so far. The homebuilders are hoping to assist many more in purchasing their dream home over the next six months.

The changes, taking effect from March 2021, mean all firms constructing buildings and structures - whether commercial or domestic - will need to prepare for changes to invoices, contracts and cash flow.

What is the current VAT process?

Generally speaking anyone who makes a supply of construction work in the UK will invoice or apply for the money due to them and must charge VAT. There are exceptions for traders below the VAT threshold and for supplies like housing which are zero rated, but the vast majority of FMB members will be charging VAT on their supplies. This means that for every £100 of work done, a business bills for and should receive £120. It uses the £100 to pay any subcontractors and cover overheads and to get profit.

The £20 is passed quarterly to HMRC after any VAT incurred in making the supply has been deducted.

What is changing?

From March 2021, no one in the construction chain will bill VAT on their supplies unless they have contracted with the end consumer and user of the structure being built. If they are merely a cog in a chain of subcontractors to the main contractor who interfaces with the actual customer, they will treat the VAT as if it has been billed on supplies they receive and as if they had charged it to their contractor – but no actual money will change hands. The only businesses to collect VAT as real money will be those contracted with an end user or customer of the building.

At the moment, if for example, your firm pays subcontractors £3,000 plus VAT £600 for work and then charges a main contractor £3,300 plus VAT £660 on that element, your bank account will pay out £3,600 and will collect £3,960. At the end of a quarter you will pay £60 to HMRC as VAT (£660 - £600), leaving £300 profit in your accounts. In the post ‘Reverse Charge’ world, you will only pay £3,000 for the work. You will receive only £3,300 for the contractor you work for. In a nutshell it means that where your firm currently has cash received of £120, in late 2019 it will only be receiving £100. The VAT paid by your firm will remain the same.

There are no implications for profit or the amount of tax paid, but there are major implications for cash flow. Many firms already have difficulty paying their VAT quarterly, or their PAYE, or trading debts because their creditors have not paid them. They frequently use VAT they have collected and are holding to pay bills that arrive before the deadline for the VAT payment. Another way of putting it is that VAT acts as oil in the cash flow pump to ease moments of cash flow crisis. One can see VAT collected as providing firms with an emergency unarranged overdraft at times when it would be difficult and expensive to get such an overdraft.

What steps can you take now to prepare for Reverse Charge VAT? • • • • •

Ensure your software is updated.

Ensure you or your accounts team are prepared for a 17% reduction in cash flowing through the veins of the business.

You will need proforma reverse charge invoices and applications.

You will need to warn your own VAT registered subcontractors.

You will need to check if your customers are VAT registered, and CIS registered and if they are, check whether they are end users.

UPDATE: The FMB has joined forces with more than 30 organisations in the construction industry to call for reverse charge VAT to be scrapped.

Following an initial letter to the Chancellor on 10 December 2020, the coalition, led by the FMB, has written again to underline the urgency with which the Government must scrap this damaging policy. The campaign was reported on by Construction News, and the industry will continue to push for a policy rethink ahead of the Government’s Budget on 3 March 2021.

Businesses should continue to prepare for the introduction of reverse charge VAT.

Safe working practices for tradespeople better than “no jab, no job” knee-jerk reactions, says Stopcocks founder WHILE SOME plumbing companies have announced they will require operatives to be vaccinated against COVID 19 in order to continue working, the efficacy of this to protect householders is unclear.

Stopcocks Women Plumbers founder Hattie Hasan MBE believes that while we’re all waiting for the vaccines to bring this crisis under control, it’s especially important to consider the implications of our actions and choices. Hasan is calling for business leaders to fully lead by taking a thought-out approach rather than giving knee-jerk reactions. She suggests we avoid reactions that could increase fear and mistrust.

“We need to carefully consider the implications of our actions.

Householders could be frightened into demanding vaccination certificates, and might tradespeople demand them from householders?” she says.

Plumbers, heating engineers and electricians, in particular, who deal with urgent and emergency situations are highly aware that they’re both personally at risk and could also pose a threat to householders, which is why they’ve been at the forefront of safer practices since the CV19 crisis began.

At time of writing, it’s too early to know whether the CV19 vaccines prevent transmission through contact (or if they only protect those who’ve been vaccinated). Medical guidelines in favour of safe working practices (safe distances, hand and surface cleaning and wearing a mask), which include householders as well as tradespeople all taking responsibility are more helpful, especially since many of us won’t receive the second dose of vaccinations until the end of 2021.

Hasan believes the current health crisis can be used positively to help customers and tradespeople stay safe rather than knee-jerk reactions that increase fear. She says, “Many tradespeople we’ve spoken to are unhappy that ’no jab, no job’ requirements invade their civil liberties, and could be disruptive. Will tradespeople refuse to enter households where people haven’t been vaccinated? It could be a slippery slope. Virtually all the tradeswomen we’ve spoken to are very keen to be vaccinated against CV19 but they’re also unhappy that some bosses are suggesting they ‘must’ receive vaccinations to remain working.”

Most tradespeople don’t fall within the age range to receive the CV19 vaccines for some time and insistence on vaccines will only serve to compound existing economic deprivation felt because of the current crisis.

“Although we believe most trades people will decide to be vaccinated it’s currently unknown whether the CV19 vaccine prevents transmission as well as keeping people symptom-free,” says Hasan, founder of the National Register of Tradeswomen, which launches on 1 March, and suggests that the current health crisis highlights how unsafe many women already feel.

“Tradeswomen are unhappy about employers and companies attempting to control their bodies in this way.” Hasan adds, “Thousands of householders have been telling us for years that they don’t feel safe not having a choice over who comes into their homes – that’s why we started Stopcocks and the Register of Tradeswomen. Women, particularly, have been calling for more safety overall. They want the opportunity to choose who comes into their homes and for some this means choosing tradeswomen.”

Hasan believes that a better look at safety overall is called for, including and beyond the current health crisis: “Only then can we come up with guidelines for behaviour that will work over time and for all of us.”

Developer GLP completes over 1.25 million sq ft of new logistics space at Magna Park South GLP, an investor and developer of logistics warehouses and distribution parks, has completed development of over 1.25 million sq ft of new, speculatively developed logistics space at Magna Park South, Lutterworth.

In addition, GLP has leased Unit 4 at Magna Park South Lutterworth prior to its completion.
