Farewell

AFTER MANY years this will be our last article contributed to the Herald.

The Markfield Community Association has run the Markfield Community and Sports Centre for the last thirty years.

The Markfield Community Association have over the years, done their best to build up the Centre into a thriving Community Centre with a sound customer base. Through a lot of hard work, the Centre had become an award winning facility, recognised by others as a hub for the village as well as a flagship for the Borough. Over the years, the Association had also raised literally hundreds of thousands of pounds to support improvements to both the Community Centre and the site as well as to fund equipment and to support local community groups and other projects.

As from the 24th November 2022, Markfield Parish Council have taken on the role to operate the Markfield Community and Sports Centre.

Induction of New Co-Pastor ON SATURDAY 29th October we celebrated the induction of our new CoPastor Robert Holmes.

The service was great, bringing together nearly one hundred people from nearby churches and many family and friends.

Rev Dr Nick Ashton performed the induction and many others took part including Pastor Garry Kelly and George Cornford.

Many of you may know Robert as he has lived in Thornton or Bagworth for most of his life. He felt a calling from God to train to be a minister in early 2019 and now after successfully completing his course he was asked by the congregation at Cross Hills to join with Garry, to be co-Pastors.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and celebrated.

Film Nights EVERY THIRD Friday evening from 5:30pm we will be hosting a free film night.

Baptism & Dedication WE CELEBRATED on 4th December the Baptism of Linzi Creedon who joined the fellowship along with her family around Easter.

Linzi and Paul’s son Everett was also Dedicated during the service. It was so wonderful to celebrate with the family and welcoming Linzi into membership at Cross Hills.

Looking back, we will remember with a smile and some sadness all of the wonderful people and customers we have met and worked with, all of the events, parties and celebrations and activities we have held over the years. We sincerely thank our wonderful staff, customers and the many organisations, partnership agencies and people in our community who have supported us in our work. Going forward we wish the Parish Council every success and we are sure that the Community Centre will continue to provide an excellent community facility for our residents.

We continue to run the Mayflower Club, continue to support the excellent Markfield Good Neighbours Scheme and wherever possible other local community groups.

Christmas Services THE MARWOOD Brass Band will be playing for us at our Carol Service at 7:30pm on Saturday 17th December.

She chose this charity to raise money for as her nanny was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

Thornton Christmas Craft Fayre

A

HUGE THANK you to everyone who supported this year’s Thornton Christmas Craft Fayre. And a massive thank you to the lovely team who helped put the event on, and of course the stall holders without whom the event could not happen. Thank you!

What an amazing day was had by us all. Gemini, Colin’s wonderful steam traction engine, started the day by travelling around the village with Father Christmas on board. Wow! A wonderful sight for all. Gemini spent the rest of the day outside the Community Centre being admired by many people.

She and Colin were very happy.

Yet again Father Christmas had so many children visiting him in his grotto that he ran out of gifts, and he had to send out for extra. Gramps’s game and an activity table where children could make Christmas decorations helped keep the children occupied while queueing to see Santa.

The stalls all looked very colourful and were packed with all manner of beautiful items, many of them locally crafted: bags, dolls, knits, jewellery, tapestry, pictures, calendars, cards, wooden items, bird boxes, scarves, cakes, jams and pickles to name but a few. The list of what was on sale was huge.

The Raffle, (what wonderful prizes) Tombola, Pound in the Bucket, and Wine & Water game were as popular as ever, and Martin’s quiz gave us all much entertaining food for thought.

The industrious ladies in the kitchen filled the halls with the wonderful smell of sizzling bacon and sausages, and kept us all well fed and watered.

Once again it was a very happy and friendly event. Amazingly we raised £1485 on the day. A very generous donation from Midland Quarry Products of £200 took the total to £1685 for the repair and improvement of our lovely heritage building that is St Peter’s church. Wow. Thank you everyone. Thank you.

Next year’s craft fayre is planned for 18th November; it’s an event not to be missed!

’D LIKE TO take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I hope the next year brings you and your loved ones nothing but prosperity and happiness.

The past couple of Christmases have felt abnormal – to say the least – for us all, but I hope that many families and friends across our community can resume their normal celebrations and enjoy the festivities in each other’s company.

The Herald is a monthly local magazine delivered free to approximately 4,000 homes and businesses in Markfield, Field Head, Stanton under Bardon, Thornton and Bagworth.

As we prepare to welcome in 2023, I’ve been reflecting on the previous year. It’s fair to say that this year has been a rather tumultuous one for the Government. But, as ever, the work of Government and Parliament continues.

We’ve secured a large amount of funding to explore the prospect of reopening the Ivanhoe Line, which passes through our area. I’d like to see a train station open at Desford to make using local transport routes easier for people in our community.

While this is a long way off yet, I’m frequently raising its potential benefits for our area with Network Rail and Transport Ministers.

Last month the Chancellor laid out

the Government’s national priorities for the coming months: stability, growth and public services. The budget aims to protect the most vulnerable while being mindful of global inflation pressures and the need to restore economic stability.

I was particularly pleased to see, after raising concerns both privately and publicly, the continued commitment to the Pensions Triple Lock. This uplift will mean an additional £870 per year to over 22,250 pensioners across Bosworth.

Importantly, funding to public services will not fall. In fact, there’s an additional £4 billion for schools over the next two years and more than £13 billion over the next two years for the NHS and adult social care.

An early Christmas present for us all was the announcement of £14 million of funding for a Testing Unit at Hinckley Hospital – bringing CT and MRI scans, blood testing and ultrasound capabilities to our area.

Back to the budget: for the thousands of businesses in our area there is a freeze to the Business Rates multiplier, numerous schemes and a 75% relief for hospitality businesses worth up to £110,000. I know that across Hinckley and Bosworth we’re all big fans of our many great pubs and cafes, these are exactly the types of businesses that this support will help through the coming months.

Markfield WI News ON 4TH NOVEMBER we held our annual Quiz Night at Coalville Rugby Club. It was good to be back to our pre-covid level of support with 13 teams of 6 enjoying the quiz and ploughman’s supper.

The evening was enjoyed by all, the losing team being delighted with their Haribos, and our thanks go to the Club for looking after us and, of course to the quizmaster and his glamorous assistant.

Remembrance Sunday, 13th November, saw us at the war memorial on the Green where we laid a wreath on behalf of the WI. As seems usual the weather was kind and it was good to see so many members amongst those who gathered there.

For our meeting on 16th November we had decided to hold a craft ‘dabble’ evening. Members were able to try their hand at Christmas cards with papercraft or rubber stamping, doily angels, gift boxes and tinfoil star decorations. We judged the evening a great success with plenty of chatter and everyone seemed pleased with the makes they took home.

Even today people associate the WI with jam and Jerusalem and ladies ‘do-gooding’ but I would like to say from a personal point of view that it is so much more than that. I and others have found a network of friendship and support offered by members to each other whether in bereavement, illness or any other circumstance; knowing that help and assistance are only a phone call away means a lot; an organisation well worth joining (and in the privacy of our own homes we’ve even been known to make jam).

Christmas offers us a time to pause and a chance to reset Borough Councillor Matthew Lay writes in The Herald CHRISTMAS is soon to be upon us and for me it is always a time of reflection. A time to gather one’s thoughts and make sense of all the chaos that surrounds us.

I think it has been a challenging year for our community and many others, and as we approach 2023 it does not look like it is going to be any easier. I am grateful that we have a good many people who do their bit to make our community a better place, but also conscious that the opposite is sometimes true. To be frank I have seen a little more of the latter than I would have cared this past year. Despite the challenges we face I am inevitably struck by the notion that somewhere else things are immeasurably worse, and this really can help put things into perspective. Especially at this time of year.

This was brought home to me simply by watching a news article about the situation in the Ukraine and what the people there are facing this winter and beyond. I was struck by the resilience of the population who are suffering significant deprivation on a scale hard to imagine. No electricity for large parts of week, water supply problems, stuttering and very limited public services, destruction, and death everywhere. And yet almost all the people interviewed said if this is what is necessary for them to secure a victory, to secure a future for their children, they would bear that deprivation with stoicism and dignity. In fact the level of human kindness and resourcefulness amongst the

people has been amazing and it will ultimately make a significant difference in the outcome of their struggle. It was of course the same stoicism and a sense of humour, that ensured the constant bombings of Britain’s cities in the Second World War by Nazi Germany was not successful.

I sometimes wonder if we have not lost our own sense of perspective and the reality that actually, despite the challenges we face, things could be worse and often are elsewhere. That is not to say we should simply ignore things, but we would do well the remember these essential truths. And further that most people are not trying to do bad things, in fact many are trying to good things. They make mistakes in doing so, that but the motivation in the first place was correct. If you are to judge, always be careful use the same lens as you would judge yourself.

I do happen to think that one of the issues we face is that unfortunately today It is easier sometimes not to be kind to one another and further we have a myriad of ways in which we can seek to cause upset without stopping to realise we are doing so. Social media is clearly one of the very worst offenders with keyboard warriors sending out missives in ways that they wouldn’t do in ordinary company. It goes some way to explain the significant increase in mental health problems that people are experiencing. It is not as it is fashionably claimed simply down to people becoming less resilient, it is also down to how people interact with each other. I am sure that Covid and the social changes that it brought about has

Christmas provides us with a helpful time to pause and a chance to reset. We shouldn’t lose that opportunity alongside the celebrations. It is good to reconsider what really matters to us and to acknowledge the value of living and the intrinsic wealth we achieve when we do kind things. I wish everybody without exception a happy Christmas this year. I will raise a glass for those who have gone before and helped guide us to the place in which we find ourselves. And Let us all hope for peace and more happiness in 2023 not least of all in the Ukraine.

WHAT A YEAR 2022 has been for Joshua Bailey and Bughill Darcy, following on from qualifying in British Show jumping Grand Prix and winning Junior Champion of Champions at STARS at Aintree at the end of 2021 they continued with their success achieving many outstanding wins.

2022 has been a remarkable year filled with celebration with our late Queen marking her Platinum Jubilee, but also tinged with sadness at her passing in September.

As I reflect on the year, I think about the amazing voluntary groups that have done so much to promote togetherness and a sense of community across our villages.

Some highlights for me include:

Markfield Easter Bonnet Competition AT EASTER a great time was had by all at the Markfield Easter Bonnet Competition.

There were so many colourful and creative entries by the children - it was hard to pick a winner! I would like to thank the volunteers at Markfield Library for making this event such a success, particularly after what has been a difficult couple of years due to the pandemic.

Desford Heritage Festival IN JULY it was a great to attend Desford Heritage Festival, organised by Kate Twitchin, and learn much local history of the village.

I know that the heritage boards have been a much-valued addition to the village.

Scarecrow Festival In August it was a pleasure to judge a category at Desford Scarecrow Festival, and join Deputy Lieutenant Alison Smith to present ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Community & Business Award’ to Laura Carr and volunteers.

I know this festival goes from strength to strength every year!

Member Highways Fund IN THE YEAR I continued to work with Parish Councils, and residents, to take forwards schemes under the LCC Members Highways Fund.

We have had success in getting Mobile Vehicle Activated Speed (MVAS) signs in Markfield and Desford, with a unit due to be installed in Stanton under Bardon shortly, and some support for Bagworth & Thornton with illegal parking around the reservoir and primary school. I continue to work with residents to progress schemes for key speeding hotspots such as Lindridge Lane and Peckleton Lane Desford, and Ashby Road and London Road Markfield.

The ‘Desford Bomber’ DURING THE year, working with County Council colleagues and the charitable sector, I was able to secure the long-term future of the Reid and Sigrist ‘Desford Bomber’.

This important piece of our local history will be preserved and available to visit at the Newark Air Museum. I have arranged for

representatives of Desford Parish Council to join me for a visit in January and I know there are plans to organise a broader visit by local historical and community groups in the new year.

Household Support Fund THIS DEDICATED fund will be used to provide support to third party organisations, support for families with food and fuel vouchers, and provide food vouchers to those children in receipt of free school meals during the school holidays.

FTER 94 YEARS, ours is probably the smallest bowls club in the county with only 20 members and three joining in the last couple of months.

What a year 2022 has been! We finished 4th in the Coalville Triples League - our highest placing yet.

Joining the Hinckley Triples League three years ago has been a great success, with us winning Division 6, then Division 5 and - this year - Division 4, plus winning the Hinckley Shield.

We were invited to play in the Wade Cup, finishing second to Kingscroft Bowling Club (the best club in the county).

At the end of the season, we were invited to take part in a new competition called Age Concern’s Charity Super Six. After winning all four group games, we played a good Hinckley Bowling Club in the final, at the lovely Birstall Bowling Club venue, with Baggies coming out on top.

Everyone could need Age Concern at some time so it was good to be able to give something back.

It was good to see one of Kingscroft Bowling Club’s ladies winning Gold at the Commonwealth Games.

We only lost 8 matches all season. We are not just a bowls club - more a family club. So if you would like to meet new friends, enjoy a game of bowls, exercise and have one of the best views in the county - you need to come to Bagworth.

The season runs from mid-April to the end of September. I have not played myself for 3½ years and am hoping to be ready to play next year (if picked).

I am very proud of all my team.

I

T IS WITH a tinge of sadness that I scribble my final Christmas column for the Herald.

Regular readers will know that I relocated to Swansea back in the spring, primarily for health reasons and to be a bit closer to my family in West Wales. Things have worked out well, but obviously I won’t be defending my council seat next year.

I regularly travel back and forth to Leicestershire on business, and to cover important council meetings. Thanks to new technology and changed working practises since COVID-19, I continue to cover my casework by phone and or e-mail in the usual manner. Face to face meetings with residents are still possible where needed, although a bit of notice is appreciated.

Looking back at my recent columns, I note that I’ve been a bit heavy with the “politics” in recent months. Given the state of Britain right now, and the chaos in Westminster over the last 12 months, I make no apologies for this. Many people are facing a grim Christmas thanks to a bizarre conveyor belt of Prime Ministers that shows little sign of stopping! Things have been a lot calmer in the council chamber in Hinckley but given that this is the season to be jolly, I’ll update on political developments In future issues.

From Pembroke to Bosworth SINCE my move, I’ve been able to spend more time with my 85-year-old mum.

Joy Furlong suffers from dementia and lives in a nursing home in Pembroke with a great view of the famous castle where Henry Tudor was born. Henry went on to big things locally, defeating Richard III at the battle of Bosworth just down the road in 1485. He was then crowned Henry VII and became the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty. In some ways, this twist of history reinforces my own connection with Leicestershire – us Welsh get everywhere!

One of the smartest things my parents did when they made a will back in the 1990s was to grant me Enduring Power of Attorney. As such, and given her poor state of health, I’m able to keep an eye on mum’s finances. In these days of electronic banking, this is a painless matter, but amongst mums’ correspondence I came across a newsletter from my late father’s pension provider. It’s full of thoughtful articles,

one of which provided me with the inspiration for this column. So, by way of relief from politics here is my advent calendar for Christmas 2022.

It’s a bit different from what you would normally expect in that there isn’t a gift behind each door - not in the physical sense at least. Let me explain.

I’M A COMPREHENSIVE school kid to my boots, and I’ve never seen the attraction of private education, but I do acknowledge that many fee-paying schools place great importance on studying ‘the classics’.

That said, ancient literature should not be the preserve of the toffs and I’m rather partial to the likes of the Greek philosopher, Socrates, in small doses. Socrates believed that the study of wisdom was very important. Perhaps more than anyone else in history, he’s a standard bearer for the pursuit of understanding through questioning and logical argument, by examining and by thinking. I’m a scientist, and as you might expect, I try to apply these rules in all aspects of life, not least in my role as a councillor.

My favourite Socrates quote is “The unexamined life is not worth living”, a maxim that I translate in simple terms as ‘Think’. If you want answers, you must ask questions.

Crucially, whilst asking questions of others is important, we must also regularly question ourselves. So, spurred on by the article in mum’s pension newsletter, here are 25 questions that we can ask ourselves over the Christmas period.

Christmas is a time when we think about others, but we should always find some time to think about ourselves, because, as Socrates observed, “The unexamined life is not worth living”.

T’S THAT TIME of year again… when we look forward to Christmas - but maybe also don’t look forward to huge to-do lists, the expense, family stress…

Perhaps Christmas is, for whatever reason, a lonely time for us, when it feels like everybody’s enjoying themselves and we’re left out in the cold.

Many people this year may feel “left out” of Christmas this year especially, because of the spiralling cost of living- or because they are displaced from familiar places and from people they love.

This year’s Methodist Church theme for Advent is “There is Room”- which may seem to ring hollow if you are the person who has been left out. But at Christmas we remember Jesus who, when He came, found no room. He was God, but became poor and displaced for us. Though Jesus was born where there was “no room”, He made room for all sorts of people, including those whom others rejected, despised or just ignored. Whoever we are, whatever our past or present situation, Jesus has room for us. But He also asks us, “Will you make room for others, as I have for you?” May we, this Christmas, know there is room for us, and make room for others in our hearts and lives.

Fifty years ago you needed an estate car to hold £50 worth of Christmas presents. Twenty years ago, it took two people to carry £20 worth of groceries — now a five-year-old can do it.

Former Thornton pub to be turned into six flats with three houses built at rear AS REPORTED IN THE LEICESTER MERCURY, the former Reservoir Inn pub in Thornton, is to be turned into six flats, with three houses to be built on land at the back of the site.

The Reservoir Inn, in Main Street, Thornton, near Coalville, has been closed since 2018, but Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council has now given permission to developer VEWD Ltd for it to be converted into housing.

There will be five, one-bedroom flats and a single three-bed flat in the pub building, with three, two-bed terraces on land at the back. The houses have been designed to resemble ‘traditional cottages’, according to planning documents. A communal garden and 16 parking spaces will be provided for residents of the development.

According to the council’s records, the pub was first mentioned in Pigot’s Directory – a guide to local services and professionals – in 1822, when it was called The Bull’s Head. The Thornton village website says it began life as a slaughter house, and has also been known as The Tipsy Fisherman and The Steam Trumpet. The pub has been closed since a kitchen fire in 2018.

Bricklayer’s Arms WE WERE both delighted but also saddened to be invited to attend the farewell bash at the Brickies to celebrate the 15 and a half years tenure of Ben and Jan who have been stalwarts of the village and everybody’s friend.

Both have supported us and been involved in numerous fights along with us to protect the village , TH010 springs to mind with a certain resident dressed up as a fish ! The Markie family will be sorely missed and we wish them well as friends.

Planning AS WE both have previously reported that due to a lack of a 5 year Housing Supply and the non-existing Local Plan by the Administration at HBBC, rural villages such as Ratby, Bagworth and Thornton are being viewed as an easy target by developers knowing full well that should they get a refusal for a development, then an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate would likely to go their way.

In terms of the Local Plan which is a statutory requirement, the plan is already a year behind. Originally, they blamed Leicestershire County Council for not working with them which was not at all correct.

Leicestershire County Council officers from their growth unit including highways and education had worked with Hinckley and Bosworth on their local plan.

Hinckley and Bosworth Council now have a consultant working on their local plan who is working alongside the County Council on their new local plan. We understand that the local plan is not now going to be ready for examination until 2024 and will not be in place until 2025!

That puts us at severe risk in terms of unsustainable development especially across villages like ours in Ratby, Bagworth and Thornton Chris asked the question to the previous Director of Planning Matt Bowers; how many applications are at the point on non-determination or gone past, and the answer was 365 - but that was back in January.

Senior Officers are now saying it is 210- 220. He didn’t believe this. Yet again, large applications are being given extra time to put forward rebuttals to objections from major consultees such as the Gladman Application for 225 dwellings on Desford Lane in Ratby, which is not afforded to others.

Ustadha Ameena Blake (Markfield Institute) wins the prestigious Most Impactful Alimah Ustadha Ameena Blake (Markfield Institute) has won the prestigious Most Impactful Alimah award in the British Beacon Mosque Awards 2022.

This category is seeking to award an Alimah that have shown through their work positive impact in the Mosque and/or in the surrounding community.

The Beacon Mosque Awards, created by Faith Associates in 2018, is held annually to improve the standards of Mosques nationally and to recognize the positive role mosques play throughout the UK. Ustadha Ameena Blake (Markfield Institute) has won the Most Impactful Alimah because of her outstanding work in the community.

Ustadha Ameena Blake is a Muslim academic scholar with a Masters degree in Islamic Studies.

Other qualifications include: BA English Studies, Postgraduate in Teaching & MSc in Leadership and Management of Education.

She works across several different professions; currently serving as a chaplain in The University of Sheffield and lecturer at Markfield Institute of Higher Education.
