Co-Op Launches Scheme For Green-Fingered Pupils PUPILS FROM the Lady Jane Grey Primary School helped to put the “grow” into Groby as they dug into a new scheme launched by the Co-op’s Groby food store to connect children to the food they eat. Children from the school planted vegetables in a plot created by the Co-op’s Laundon Way food store in a bid to provide a fun way to “cultivate” an interest in gardening and encourage a greater understanding about seasonal produce. The new scheme, known as “A Place to Grow”, works in partnership with the school and with the support of the Hawgrip Nurseries, Enderby, to help to enrich the curriculum by providing a creative, practical and first-hand learning experience. The hands-on activity also provides opportunity for crosscurricular learning, including developing social and team skills, and promoting science, numeracy, literacy, problem solving and creative writing. Kelly Hearn, Community Pioneer at the Co-op’s food store in Laundon Way, Groby, said: “The children had a great time. ‘A Place to Grow’ provides a space for pupils to learn and engage in a creative and fun way. As a community retailer we are committed to making a positive difference locally. The activity presents a host of cross-curricular learning opportunities, but also provides a flavour for the dedication and hard work that growers have to put in to grow the great quality seasonal British produce that the children will see on the shelves in store.”
