The Anstey Gala Day celebration takes place on Saturday 18th September 2010 from 12 noon Recreation Ground, Stadon Road, Anstey.

Anstey will be celebrating the end of World War 2 with the ‘Tommy Atkins’ army re-enactment group, and the Ratby Mid Band.

Refreshments will be available in the Jubilee Hall and there will be a range of stalls on the field, plus • Dog display team and Dog show • ‘Freddie the Magician’ for the children • And local dance groups too!

Fun Day: 29th Aug Homeware for your Anstey Crown Football Club is holding its annual STEVE KNIGHT Memorial Grand Charity Football Match and Fun Day on Sunday 29th August 2010 at the Anstey Nomads Football Ground, Cropston Road Anstey, starting at 12 noon.

The day will consist of a youth football tournament followed by various attractions including, BBQ, FOOD STALLS, ICE CREAMS, BRIC a BRAC, SWEET STALL, TOMBOLA, FACE PAINTING, RAFFLE, BOUNCY CASTLES, BUCKING BRONCO and LICENSED BAR etc. Additional stall space is available for anyone interested in supporting the event (please see contact details below).

Raffle prizes have been generously donated by shops and businesses throughout the Anstey Village area and any further donations will be gratefully received.

Last year’s event raised over £3,000 for the Wish upon a Star children’s charity and The Youth Sports Trust and it is hoped that this year’s event will be bigger and better.

Leicester City have again been approached to send personalities on the day to give out awards, draw the raffle and sign autographs.

The main football game of the day will include players both past and present from the Anstey Crown FC and friends of Steve Knight, the evening will conclude with a grand charity auction for which any donation would be most welcome. The evening will conclude with a late bar and disco.

Public Toilets

You may have seen the recent news that Charnwood Borough Council has decided to close the public toilets in villages around Charnwood. Your parish council is in discussion with Charnwood to see about the feasibility of taking over the toilets so that they can remain open. We will give you more information as soon as we can.

Possible Millfield Development

In the last edition of the Clarion one article mentioned that the parish council was to create new allotments on Millfield play area. The council has been made aware of concerns from various residents. The facts are that the parish council has decided to look at the possibility of putting some allotments on this land. Before any final decision is made a lot of investigation is necessary. May I take this opportunity to re-assure all residents that even if it proves feasible it will not just happen. There will be an opportunity to make your views known but it is not planned to do this until we have a better idea of what could be done.

Recreation Ground Activities

May I repeat a previous request to all residents?

The council is still suffering from mindless vandalism of play equipment, children still try to wrap the swings around the top bar by swinging the seat and some children have been hurt by this. Others play football in the shelter, this has meant replacing lights because they were damaged by footballs and we are also concerned at possible damage to others in the area from these heavy footballs. This vandalism has cost your parish council over £ 3,000 in the past three months.

Currently we are waiting for the contractor to start repairing the walls near to Packhorse Bridge that have been taken down by vandals. This will cost approximately another £ 1,500. This work has to be done by a specialist, as the bridge is an Ancient Monument so there are restrictions over what can be done and how it is repaired.

Litter is getting much worse and the council staff are spending over 6 hours each week picking this up around the Recreation Ground. We have a number of litter bins around the grounds and have another 3 on order.

This does effect you as all the work is paid for by your parish council. We get our money from your council tax. If I may remind you in the last year we spent over £ 10,000 repairing the damage from vandalism, money that could have provided more facilities for you, the residents, instead.

We are asking for your assistance in talking this over with your friends and relatives to encourage all to help stop this mindless damage.

Charnwood Borough Council Carries On The Free Swim Programme Charnwood Borough Council will be continuing free swimming for over 60s and 16 and unders, despite funding from the Government being withdrawn.

The programme will run, funded by the Borough Council, until March 2011.

Central Government is ceasing funding for free swim programme for people aged 60 years and over and 16 years and under from 31 July 2010, as part of their recent emergency budgetary announcement.

The Borough Council will continue with the current free swimming offer at its three leisure centres until 31 August 2010.

From 1 September 2010 until 31 March 2011, it will offer a limited number of free swim sessions per week at its leisure centres.

During term time, it will provide 3 sessions at Loughborough and South Charnwood Leisure Centres and 2 sessions at Soar Valley Leisure Centre for people aged 60 and over. For 16 years and under, it will provide 2 sessions at weekends at all the three sites. During holidays, there will be 2 additional sessions during the week for 16 years and under.

Outside of the allocated times for free swim sessions, the price for swimming for both age groups will be £1.45, a 50% reduction of the full adult rate.

Charnwood Borough Council will still be offering free swimming for children under the age of 4 years.

Councillor Peter Lewis, Lead Member for Culture and Leisure for Charnwood Borough Council, said: “We have continued with this limited scheme as we recognise the health benefits free swimming brings as well as the increase we have seen in swimmers since its introduction and the positive impact on residents. This extension will allow both over 60s and 16 and unders to take advantage of the limited free swim programme until March 2011.”

Children’s Holiday Club

The King and The Castle The Churches Together in Anstey ran another very successful Children’s Holiday Club, enthusiastically run by Emma Bown and her large team of volunteers.

Around thirty children attended each day and the theme was The King and The Castle, covering three sections, The armour of God, Queen Esther and The Fall of Jericho. Each day they had a story session, lively chorus singing, refreshments, crafts, games and sometimes drama.

At an evening presentation for friends and families on the last day, the children showed off the variety of exciting things they had made in the craft groups including swords, shields, helmets and crowns.

The climax on the last morning, was everyone representing the Israelites, marching round a cardboard city of Jericho, led by a realistic model of the Ark of God, firstly in silence, and then finally amid loud blowing of homemade trumpets and shouting, and the city walls came tumbling down.

The whole team had done a grand job and the children had thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

David Snartt reports...

Update on Ashton Green Development I have already outlined my concerns about this new development consisting of 3,000 dwellings to the north of Beaumont Leys, close to the County border with the City. I understand the City Council will soon be determining the planning application. I have made representations to the City Council as I still have real concerns about the impact of increased traffic levels through county villages, including Anstey. This to access the M1 north and various destinations within the north of Leicestershire and beyond.

I am told that only a small percentage of traffic from the new development will use the routes north. I cannot understand if this is the case why the proposal is to have one of the three access points adjacent to Leicester Road, Thurcaston, making it, in my view, the easy route through the County villages. I have asked that this proposed access point to the development is closed, therefore routing traffic south to the City and round to the A46. I will give you a further update after the planning decision is made.

Public Toilets within Charnwood Although I do not represent Anstey at Charnwood Borough Council I have been involved with plans to change the way the future management of public toilets is carried out within Charnwood, this will include Anstey.

Although these facilities are not a statutory obligation, it has been recognised that public toilets are a valuable asset especially to our more vulnerable members of society.

Therefore the Borough Council are looking at different ways of providing this service which over the years has not only become more expensive to maintain in its current form but the conveniences have suffered from

vandalism, anti-social behaviour and predatory behaviour.

I am hopeful that a solution will be found for Anstey, either by working with the Parish Council, who will be invited to take ownership of the toilets after the Borough Council has invested up to £10,000 on cleaning and repairing before handing the toilets over. Or local businesses and organisations within the village such as retailers and public houses joining a Community Toilet Scheme. This would see under this scheme the Borough Council paying a nominal fee, potentially £600 a year to any local participating organisation that offers use of their toilet facilities. Naturally the toilets would have to be accessible and of an appropriate standard. The principle of a Community Toilet Scheme is recognised as a good practice model by the British Toilet Association and is well established in numerous locations.

I am grateful for the interest shown by the Parish Council, therefore I am hopeful there will be a successful resolution which will provide facilities in the village for many years to come.

Praise from the Home Secretary As Chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership I was pleased to hear in a key note speech, the Home Secretary, Theresa May, make reference about the importance of partnership working by relevant agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour. She specifically singled out the work of the Charnwood Safety Partnership for praise making mention of the case management system which is used by agencies to record and deal with the reduction of anti-social behaviour. I am confident that our systems and responses to anti-social behaviour are highly developed, but I am delighted that this has now been recognised at the highest level of Government. I am hopeful the Home Secretary will visit

Nominations open for Charnwood Sports Awards 2010 After the success of last year’s Sports Awards, Charnwood Borough Council has launched the Charnwood Sports Awards 2010 to celebrate the sporting success of individuals, teams and volunteers within the Borough.

Charnwood Borough Councillor’s Report From a very smart John Sutherington Heartlink Appeal

All a bit hectic at the moment with a family illness and my eldest son getting married at Mary’s Church, Anstey recently, plus my car needing some TLC and money to get it through its MOT. But I can report.

Latimer Street The eyesore. After much persuasion it as now been tidied up and made secure by the developers. I can also state that I attended a Highways Forum recently and the Latimer Street parking scheme is at the consultation stage.

The Nook The 2 disabled parking bays should be in situ by September these to be situated outside Johnson’s Fruit shop and the Coach and Horses. It was also decided by a plans committee at Charnwood Borough Council that the signs on the Nook island should be removed, along with 15 others throughout the borough.

Woolden Hill School It was lovely to be invited to open the new Trim Trail at the school’s annual Fete and also judge the fancy dress competition. A good afternoon was had by all, the weather was good and I was made very welcome.

On opening the trim trail (In my time they were assault courses) which was erected by the County Council, I did notice they had an extra beam about 2 metres long that no one could make fit anywhere….It’s still sitting there as far as I know!!!

This has now gathered momentum and the campaign to keep the Children Cardiac Unit at Glenfield Hospital as been taken up by the Leicester Mercury.

Support for the campaign currently stands at over 44,000 signatures. Part of the petition contains many of my fellow Charnwood Borough Councillors from all sides and representing many villages as well as Loughborough, plus a number of Anstey Parish Councillors.

It is essential that we try to keep this marvellous facility open at Glenfield Hospital. Thank you to all those who helped collect the signatories thus far.

Anstey Public Loo! Do you use it? Is it worth while? does it serve a purpose? I believe it’s a worth while contribution to the village but moves are afoot from Charnwood Borough Council Cabinet to maybe close this much needed (at times) facility. What do you think.

Kerry Mullins, a Leicestershire mum who uses real nappies has recently become a Leicestershire Real Nappy Network Advisor.

“I love that I’m doing my bit for the planet and love the comments I get from other Mums when they see my nappies.” When asked why she became an advisor Kerry replied “I love passing on my tips and hints to people and can’t stop talking about real nappies!”

Link Road scheme set up

Welcome to the latest news from Anstey Neighbourhood Watch.

First I must say a belated welcome to the residents of the middle of Link Road to NHW. A big thank you to John Dowling and his wife Coral, for all their hard work in setting up this scheme. Thank you to everyone who turned up for the welcome evening, I hope you all enjoyed it. If anyone from the Bradgate and Cropston Road ends of Link Road want to join up with John, just give me a ring. My details are on the bottom of this article.

With the onset of warm summer days makes it necessary to open windows and doors to allow fresh air in. Open windows that look out onto the road are an invitation to opportunist burglars. Past crime statistics show a significant increase in this sort of burglary during the summer months as well as the theft of garden equipment from sheds and garages.

Please make sure that you close windows when going out and if you are not able to keep an eye on the vulnerable rooms. Sheds and garages should be locked whenever possible. Shed and garage alarms are easily fitted and can be purchased from DIY stores and the Neighbourhood Offices in both Coalville and Loughborough Police Stations. The offices are open Monday and Thursday from 10.00.am. to midday.

Also during the warm weather please remember your neighbours. If you have your windows open, please remember to turn the volume down on your radio or music centre, your choice of music might not be theirs.

Bradgate Twinning Association

What do Twinners get up to?

Ok, so we go to Plateau Est de Rouen, and the French spend a few days in Bradgate once each year – both major events in our calendar and our “raison d’etre”… but what else happens?

The answer is lots and lots. For a start the team spend quite some time thinking and planning how to entertain our French visitors – an increasingly difficult task as they have been coming now for over 30 years. Then there are the social activities, often, but not always with a French influence. They all involve people in doing things, making plans and sorting things, not just the food, drink and prizes. New ideas are always welcomed along with new members - not every member visits France or hosts French visitors.

Of course we have a petanque competition (or boules to most of us) - held against Glenfield Twinning Association. This year Bradgate retained the trophy with a convincing victory - but who knows what will happen next time.

Our star summer event is the Garden Party. Under a bright sunny sky great fun was had by 60 members and guests. Along with splendid catering, guests enjoyed playing petanque, croquet - the old garden party favourite - and good old conversation accompanied by traditional French music.

Theo aged 8yrs, the youngest guest - son of one of our French visitors, soon got the hang of croquet, and played a major part in his team’s victory.

What’s more it was amazing to hear him speaking English so well, although he did need the occasional translation of the rules.

Our French visitors expressed their delight at participating in a real English Garden Party, and asked if the Queen’s Buckingham Palace Garden Parties were as good!

BTA’s next event is the Allo Allo Café at the Anstey Gala on 18 September, why not call in for drinks and refreshments and see if you can spot René.

The final event this year will be Cliff Richard tribute act “Cliff as If “ - concert and supper on 9 November at Newtown Linford. All welcome. When did you first hear Cliff? And did you ever see him live? Now’s your chance - as If! Look out for posters, or if you want to become involved contact Anne Dutton on (0116) 2213786.

New council scheme to fill empty flats A NEW council initiative has been launched to reduce age restrictions for tenants in elderly housing complexes to help fill empty flats in the borough.

Charnwood Borough Council will now consider tenancy applications from prospective tenants aged 45 and over for vacant flats designated as elderly accommodation. The previous age band was 50 and over.

The move, which was approved by the council’s Cabinet on Thursday night, aims to meet the housing need for that age group while also

helping fill 36 vacant flats and bedsits throughout the borough.

The new measure follows the success of a policy change last year which saw the age restriction reduced from 60 to 50 years old, helping house 50 people.

And the new policy also means council coffers will receive a cash injection from an increase in the number of rent payers.

Councillor John Bush, Charnwood Borough Council’s lead member for housing and environmental health, said: “After

the huge success we had last year when we reduced the qualifying age to 50, we are now keen to fill the remaining vacant properties and want to include more people in the selection process.

“Not only does this mean we can provide more homes for people in the borough, it also means we have fewer empty properties.

“The qualifying age for people in sheltered housing remains 60 although there is currently a review underway of all the council’s sheltered schemes.

New girls required for successful Duke of Edinburgh group

Nine Thurcaston & Cropston Rangers (older Girl Guides) have completed their Bronze expedition of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the photograph shows some of them on the expedition & camping over night at Quorn.

This year we are celebrating 100 years of guiding and would like to see old and existing Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Guiders and helpers.

Also anyone who has been in the movement since 1910 who would like to visit us will be more than welcome and we would love to meet you.

Corporate Rugby and Netball Charnwood Borough Council’s Active Together team is organising Corporate Rugby and Netball Tournaments, following on from the success of the Charnwood Corporate Football Tournament in April, which saw 15 teams compete and 3M were crowned champions.

The Tournament will be held on Sunday 19 September at Humphrey Perkins High School from 10am-2pm. All organisations, no matter how big or small are invited to enter as many teams as they like but all players must be employees of the same organisation.

The teams should consist of a squad of up to 10 players, with seven players on the pitch at any time for Netball and six players for Rugby.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 8 September 2010 and entry costs £25 per team. For further information on either event or to request an entry form, please contact the Active Together Team on 01509 632534 or email active.together@charnwood.gov.uk.

The Anstey Millennium Collection - ready for all to see Provided there are no last minute hitches, from September, the collection of over 1650 photographs depicting village life and the ever-changing scene over the last 140 years will be available for all to view.

All the pictures have been reproduced in an easy to view large format from originals loaned from numerous sources over the last 40 years.

The Anstey Parish Council in the Jubilee Hall, the Anstey library and the Leicestershire Records office in Wigston have all kindly agreed to make this facility available at their respective offices.

The on-screen viewing from DVDs will be accompanied with two updated indices.

The first will list the full collection, complete with dates and an acknowledgement to the original donor, together with cross references to aid the viewers in his or her seach for a particular scene, person or event.

The second is an index of over 3,000 entries of people identified in the collection arranged in alphabetical order with the corresponding picture number.

The collection is still on-going and any additional donations would be welcome with the assurance that any copies loaned, the majority of which are irreplaceable, would be receipted, carefully looked after and returned.

At the same time, any corrections or additional information to the collection would also be appreciated by the curator, Brian Kibble on 0116 236 4441 (answerphone facility available when out).

The Friends of Castle Hill Park

The Friends group was formed in 2008 with the objective of promoting the park to the community and helping the City Council Parks Department with conservation and the provision of amenity within the park.

As a country park, Castle Hill is enjoyed by many people from the City and Anstey who want ‘to get away from it all’’ and it has been left, as much as possible, the way nature intended. The group is keen to preserve the less formal nature of the area.

The group was started with only 15 members, but in a year this figure has grown to over 50 and they are, of course looking for new members. Their current membership includes a small working group which meets at the park on Thursdays to repair fences, build bridges over the various ancient ditches, make steps in the steep of slippery banks and generally maintain the park’s accessibility for users. The group has helped plant over 500 trees in the last year, including the foundation of a brand new nut orchard.

Other projects have included the building of owl boxes, to encourage barn owls to the area and ongoing atempts to restore one of the sites scheduled monuments to its former glory. The Medieval Fish Pond at the bottom of the Knight Hospitallers’ site only has water after prolonged rainfall, the group has been working with other interested bodies to try to find a way to make the area watertight, so far without any luck.The have also responded to requests from the community by building and placing benches at various vantage points.

The park is well used by Anstey residents be it dog walkers, joggers , bird watchers, cyclists and walkers. The group would like to involve many more Anstey residents in their work. So if you are interested in improving and maintaining the wellbeing of the park why not give the FoCHP Chairman, Adrian Barnes a call on 0116 210 8818.

Groby Club Variety Show

A Grand Variety Show will take place on Thursday 23rd September at Groby Ex-Servicemen’s Club between 8pm-11pm.

All proceeds from the show will go to Cancer Research and Loros.

There will be a full night’s entertainment with local professional talent including some of Leicester’s top bands, singers, dancers, and two amazing speciality acts. There will also be a prize raffle with proceeds going to both charities. The show will be compered by Digg Haywood.

Retiring Chairman’s Report on the year As Chairman of the Parish Council, it is for me to try to summarise the events of the past 12 months – and there are a lot of them to list: Jubilee Hall I’d like to start by mentioning how successful the Jubilee Hall has become in supporting many activities within the village. The range and number of events is becoming quite remarkable. These include regular activities for adults and children, and many more.

The Hall is now regularly occupied every evening of the week and most of the day-time. It is really becoming the home of many organisations based in the village.

As well as regular weekly activities, other events including; The Anstey Gala, MP surgeries, Police

surgeries, Neighbourhood Watch meetings, and the regular professional theatre productions which are held in the Hall at least twice every year.

The income from hall bookings and lettings now tops £9,000 per annum and, as such, easily covers the annual repayments of the loan that we borrowed to build the hall in 2003.

In addition to the above, the Jubilee Hall has now been extended at each end to provide enhanced facilities. The southern extension forms a new and much more practical garage and workshop space and this has also allowed for an extra meeting room and extra storage to be provided.

well in the new ministries. I was also pleased to be present to welcome the Reverend Meda Stamper to the United Reform Church a few weeks ago to replace Jay and we wish her well. We also hope that St Mary’s will have new permanent Minister in place as soon as possible.

We were also sad to see the departure of Jay’s wife Rachel, who had been a Parish Councillor with us for many years. Her commitment and enthusiasm will be hard to replace. There is hence a vacancy for a Parish Councillor and we are likely to have an election in the near future.

Part of the Graffiti wall At the other end of the Hall, we have now created a youth shelter, graffiti wall and kick-about wall that is proving to be very popular with local children.

Some of the other benefits of it are that it has dissuaded young people from playing football in the playground area, (which used to cause concerns for the parents of younger children), reduced graffiti and reduced anti-social behaviour.

Other Initiatives

The Parish Council continues to foster its links with other village-based organisations including the churches, the Neighbourhood Watch, the police, youth services, twinning and others. Whilst one of our priorities is to support young people in the village, we realise that we have to reach out to groups of all ages, so we are currently working on a Sports and Recreation strategy. The recommendations in the report should allow the Parish Council to strengthen its links with the schools, local sports clubs, other local recreation associations and may also allow us to pursue the possibility of creating more allotments for villagers – but that’s easier said than done!

I must also mention the introduction of CCTV to the village. This is now up and running around the Jubilee Hall and the next phase to cover the Nook will be operational in June. This will help reduce anti-social behaviour, improve security and reduce the fear of crime in our community.

However, one of the Council’s initiatives that has pleased me most are the Christmas lights that we’ve had over the past 2 Christmases. I was really pleased that, with the assistance of the Gala Committee, we achieved something special and made Anstey stand out from the crowd – and, in my opinion, we did it with such style! This has been borne out by the number of enquiries that we’ve had from other Leicestershire parishes about where we got the lights from.

Looking ahead From incoming Chairman, Mike Parker How times change! As the new Chairman, elected in May 2010, the professionalism demanded of your council to work for you is in marked contrast to the approach in the 1980’s when I was last council Chairman. I am pleased to say that both councillors and council staff are fully equipped to meet this demand.

We have a number of on-going areas that take resources such as: • Repairs to playground equipment, often due to vandalism • Monitoring potential developments that might impact on the village • Getting approval to be able to salt pavements in the cold weather Your council is also working on a number of new projects during the coming year including: • Looking at the provision of more allotments • Improved and extended sports and recreation provision • An action plan to address the significant number of unsafe headstones in the Cemetery • Action Plan to help in the event of their being a significant threat of flooding • Increased safety for all through the CCTV around the Nook (now operational) To achieve this we will continue to work with both Borough and County Councils for Anstey.

You will see in the financial summary some details of how we raise and spend money. There is an open invitation to all residents to come to council meetings to see how these decisions are taken.

At its heart the parish council is here to help make Anstey an even better place. We, your councillors, are all local residents and are always open to your comments and suggestions.

Anstey Rugby Club News

New season, New League Division Following another reorganisation for the 2010/11 season your local rugby club will be playing in the Leicestershire Leagues, Division 1.

The other teams in our division are Coalville Social, Cosby, Hinckley 3rds, Market Bosworth 2nds, South Leicester 3rds and Syston 3rds.

This group of teams probably poses more of a challenge than last season, but with excellent numbers at pre-season training and the continued strength of our forwards all the signs are good for Anstey RFC in the new campaign.

This year the season gets under way with the Birstall Social Sevens on Sunday 29th August. This is a new event organised by one of our nearest neighbouring clubs and looks to be a good day out for those playing as well as those supporting. An outdoor bar and BBQ will be running all day from 11am to 4pm and any support from the village would be very welcome!

Away games in early September are at Coventry Saracens and Leicestershire Police before the first Home League game on the 18th September, when we entertain Coalville Social.

The day before the Birstall event on Saturday 28th we are having a ‘Club Day’ at our Link Road ground when our sparkling new goalposts will be erected – Will be good to see vertical post and horizontal crossbars!

~ Heritage Open Day ~

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a Heritage Open Day on Saturday 11th September 2010.

Venues open from 10am to 4pm will be All Saints’ Church, Anstey Lane and the Methodist Church, Mill Lane, both in Thurcaston, and the Evangelical Free Church, Station Road, Cropston.

This community event is intended to promote the history of the two villages and the churches. There will be displays and exhibits of archive material at all three venues, with village trail leaflets to follow, and a quiz.

How much do you know about the place in which you live?

Entrance to all venues is free and refreshments will be available.

The date coincides with the Leicestershire Historic Churches’ Trust Annual Ride & Stride event, which raises funds for participating churches by those people taking part gaining sponsorship for cycling or walking to a number of churches in their local area. All Saints’ Church will remain open until 6pm to cover this event.

Please come along and enjoy this celebratory day.

Kew, Coffee & History at the WI

Anstey WI News Members of Anstey WI and their friends enjoyed a wonderful day out at Kew Gardens in June. It was difficult to fit in everything there was to see, and the coach returned full of tired but happy passengers.

In July President Jackie Dawson hosted a fund raising coffee evening, which was successful despite the disappointing weather.

At the August meeting Ray Sutton gave an interesting talk on the history of Anstey from the Iron Age through to World War One. He was very knowledgeable on this wide subject, packing his talk with documentary and archaeological evidence. There were also smiles over anecdotes such as a boy in Anstey being captured by Highland warriors in the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and over that well known Anstey vandal, Ned Ludd.

Several visitors attended this meeting. Curiously, the competition, entitled “This is my home town,” attracted entries only from members born outside Leicestershire.

Pet Obesity

Bonkers Idea of the Month

Councils all over the country are debating about whether to switch off street lights for part of the night to save taxpayers’ money.

It seems a very sensible idea to consider, but some people are understandably raising concerns about safety. In their opinion, if the lights were considered necessary when they were erected, surely they are still necessary now.

I have come up with a much better idea which will save loads of cash and will not have any effect on safety.

The idea is - REMOVE ALL BULBS FROM THE AMBER LIGHTS OF TRAFFIC LIGHTS. I drive around quite a lot in my job, and I’ve noticed an increased tendency for drivers to TOTALLY IGNORE amber traffic light signals.

If I remember my Highway Code correctly, the single amber light means ‘Stop - unless it is unsafe to do so.” In real life, many drivers regard the amber light to mean “accelerate before it changes to red”.

So let’s get rid of the amber light altogether and save ourselves a few quid.

The next Health Check session at Anstey Library takes place on Tuesday 14th September 2010.

Obesity is a disease that can be identified as an excess of body fat that is enough to impair health,welfare and quality of life, and even the life span of those affected. In other words the subject is oveweight and in the national press recently there has been the debate that obese people should be described as fat.

Whatever ever the merits for or against this description it is becoming increasingly obvious that many of our pets are also prone to this condition. In people it is generally recognised as 20 to 25 per cent above the ideal body weight.

Ther degree of obesity that impairs the health and welfare of animals has not been well defined and will vary between individuals. However it is more likely to be similar to that seen in humans.

Although some diseases can cause obesity, the main reason for the condition is because the food the animal eats contains more energy than the they can use up. This means that if pets eat too much or do not get enough exercise they become obese.

Several factors can cause obesity Studies show that something like 22 to 44 per cent of cats and dogs are overweight. There are several factors that can make it more likely that a pet will be obese.For dogs it can be for the breed, age, neuter effects, sex and the owner!

It has been suggested that dogs belonging to obese owners are more likely to be obese. The exact reason for this is not clear, however it may be because overweight owners are less likely to exercise their dogs or less able to recognise obesity in their pets. Obesity can cause pets unneccesary suffering, in some individuals disabling.

The good news is that it can be preventable. If you have any doubts your pets weight consult your vet. They will be available to give your pet a health check and can recommend a weight reduction programme suitable for your pet. Remember that all pets, not just cats and dogs can be obese.

Cross country Bike Ride for Gemma

Anstey’s Gemma Sutherington (now living and working in Leeds) is going to be cycling across one of the most famous Coast to Coast routes from one side of the UK to the other.

The challenge is over three days from 10th - 12th September 2010 and covers a total of 145 miles. The aim is to raise money for the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity who are a national charity providing practical and emotional support to families who have children with life threatening or terminal illnesses. They offer this right through from diagnosis and treatment to bereavement or recovery.

Sticky Wicket?

Well, can it get any more difficult?

Hopefully not at Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club but you never know. Things have not been going at all well for the senior league outfit this season. On Saturdays both 1st and 2nd teams are struggling with player availability which then produces sides that are not good enough to compete, hence a run of poor results which as left both sides languishing near the bottom of their Divisions.

We are still actively looking for a General Secretary and social secretary for the club from next season and it also looks like we shall be seeking a new President because David Young along with his wife Sandra could be leaving our Headquarters at the Hare and Hounds very soon to take up a new post elsewhere. The grounds man problem as been solved at least for next year.

The Thursday evening league sides also fared rather badly and finished low down in their Divisions, once again it was players dropping out late, some with valid reasons, but some excuses beggared belief sometimes.

We shall be on the look out during the close season for players who not just sign on for Anstey & Glenfield CC but also play for US on a regular basis. Even when, like this season things don’t go to well.

The 2011 season will see a few changes at the club that is for sure but we shall still be playing cricket make no mistake. It’s such a good facility on Gynsill Lane so it’s a puzzle as to why people don’t want to play?

Good ground, changing rooms, nice setting, Insurance and a good standard of Cricket what more could you ask for??

It’s not all doom and gloom however because our Junior section is still prospering especially the Under11’s. The future is bright but they need to grow up quickly.

Anyone interested in helping an old established club who are going through a sticky patch please give me a ring, in confidence.

SWITCH is a pro-active environmental scheme that adds to the holistic view of Charnwood Borough Council on environmental issues: REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE. The main aim is to reduce and divert household waste from landfill.

After a very successful 12 month trial period we are happy to announce the expansion of the SWITCH project.

16,300 extra properties are eligible to participate thanks to the funding granted from Leicestershire County Council.

An informational leaflet has been sent to all occupiers, giving details about the ongoing progress of the scheme.

During the trial, the feedback on this equipment was positive and we hope that we can help you use it in the most effective and efficient way.

There could not be a better time to start this project as during Summer there is a burst in garden waste. Instead of having to go to the tip, you can recycle your own waste and produce healthy and nutritious compost for your garden.

Some of those who’ve already received equipment said that they found the scheme really helpful, it saved them time going to the tip for garden waste, and most of them were amazed from the quantity and variety of things they stopped putting in the black bin.

Will Community Speed Watch Be Coming To Anstey?

How to pledge your support for the project What is Community Speed Watch?

Your Parish Council or Traffic Action Group will be loaned a speed detection device to undertake its own traffic monitoring with the assistance of volunteers. The details of vehicles caught speeding will be passed on to the Police for consideration of a letter that explains the purpose of the project to be sent to them. Repeat offenders could face prosecution. This is an opportunity for the community to help itself in dealing with the problem of speeding.

The roads which we are hoping to cover are Bradgate Road and Cropston Road.

We need at least 40 signatures or e-mail replies per road.

I need at least 6 volunteer’s and a maximum of 16. We will be given training one week and go live the next. The scheme is run on a first come first serve basis so the earlier we can get the signatures and identify the volunteers/coordinator the sooner the scheme has an opportunity to operate.

t was good of you to take Evensong here last Sunday while I was at my old college re-union – but I would prefer you used the pulpit in future when preaching.

How could Colonel Brockle complete ‘The Times’ crossword and Miss Balmer her knitting with you constantly walking up and down in front of them? They found it most disconcerting, as out of politeness, they were obliged to listen to you. It was a unique experience they do not wish to repeat.

Those few who defy Anglican tradition and sit at the front of the church were also placed in the dilemma of trying to decide whether they should keep turning in their pews as you paraded down the nave and then rotating back to the front as you re-emerged up the side aisle. It did Lady Plumptree’s vertigo no good at all. It also allowed people to see that you were wearing suede shoes. For many of our worshippers, the most appalling of heresies are as nothing when compared to brown shoes under a cassock.

I appreciate you made heroic efforts and got your sermon down to 30 minutes, but that is still 20 minutes longer than they anticipated and 29 minutes longer then their attention span. That is why the noise you thought was sidesmen counting the morning’s collection while you preached was in fact the organist jangling his keys in an attempt to remind you that his oven timer had long since switched off and his casserole was getting cold.

No, use the pulpit in future; that is the reason why stonemasons 600 years ago put twenty tons of marble in our church in the first place and it would be a shame to disappoint them. It also means that from a distance of 100 yards and a height of 20 feet, no one can tell that the glass of water I use liberally while preaching is in fact a gin and tonic.

I concede that our pulpit has its dangers. I have known several bishops come to grief as their robes wrap themselves around the newel post as they ascend the steps. One, unable to untangle himself, was obliged to preach while half way up the steps and with his back to the congregation, while our verger was dispatched to find a pair of scissors.

Perhaps, before your next visit, we may install a mechanical floor in the pulpit, so that after 10 minutes, it slowly lowers you into the crypt while the congregation can get on with singing the last hymn before getting home in decent time.

The league will start in September and last for 8 weeks, with a cup competition in addition. The matches will take place at Hind Leys College in Shepshed on Monday nights from 6.30pm 9.30pm and will last for 30 minutes.

Unlimited amount of squad players can be used throughout the league, but only 10 players can be included in a squad per match. The cost will be £2.50 per player.

The knockout cup competition will also take place during the 8 week season and the league winner and cup winners will be awarded trophies and medals.

Councillor Peter Lewis, Lead Member for Culture and Leisure said: “This is a great opportunity to engage in a sporting activity, compete with other teams and have fun at the same time. Ok it’s not the World Cup but a great way to keep fit and make new friends.”
