ST. GEORGE’S DAY CELEBRATIONS IN THORNTON TO CELEBRATE St.George’s Day locally there will be an open evening at St. Peter’s Church, Thornton between 6.15pm-7.30pm on Friday the 24th April when you are invited to watch the ringers “rise” and”fall” the bells and ring various methods. There will an opportunity for you to participate by way of “chiming” or indeed ringing a bell (under expert supervision) -no age limit applies. Hopefully you will enjoy the experience and may like to take up the art of “campanology. The celebrations will follow on with an evening at the Bricklayers Arms enjoying a selections of delicious home made pies followed by music by way of “Last Night of the Proms” from the Royal Albert Hall (on wide screen) where we will sing along to such favourites as “Land of Hope and Glory” “Jerusalem”etc.. There will be plenty of flags ,hats bunting and singalong sheets on display. The open evening at church is free but the food and entertainment cost £10 per person. To help the chef to know how many pies to bake please could you ring Eric on 01530 230743 to reserve a pie. Drinkers only are, of course, most welcome. The previous two years have been a complete sell out so booking early is a must. This is a Friends of St Peter’s fund raising event for the “Bell fund”

Stanton May Day Fete and Scarecrow Festival STANTON under Bardon QGJ Committee is holding a fete at St Mary’s Church on Saturday 2nd May 2015 12-4pm Entry is free, there will be a Raffle, Tombola, Tea & Cakes, BBQ, Face Painting, Lucky Dip, £1 in the Bucket and other stalls & games
Scarecrow Time! Stanton’s Annual Scarecrow Competition will also be held on Saturday 2nd May. This year its up to you what you choose whatever theme you want, then just put your name, address & 50p (at villagers request) into the box at Stanton Store. Last date for entries is 29th April. Maps of entries will be available at the fete. Scarecrows should be ready by 12 mid-day & the winner will be announced at the end of the Fete. Hope to see you there!

Don’t miss the Markfield Mayday Gala and Library Open Day! MARKFIELD Library Group is holding a GALA DAY on MAY 4th, 11am to 4pm, in the grounds of Mercenfeld School in Oakfield Avenue, Markfield, next to the Library. There will be pony rides; competitions for children and adults; refreshments; fancy dress; dancing; and you can even get up close and personal to snakes and all manner of creepy crawlies; as well as various stalls.
