For quite some time, interior and exterior home décor has been dominated by one colour: grey. Things are beginning to heat up this summer, as trends shift to more earthy colours and homeowners look to nature to inspire a calm and peaceful home. When it comes to exterior paints, experts couldn’t agree more. “For 2026, warm neutrals are replacing cool greys,” said Andrew Garrison, Regional Account Manager, Sherwin Williams Canada Consumer Brands Group. Garrison feels rich, dark exteriors will continue to gain momentum, with earthy greens gaining fast in popularity. Durability and ease of application appeal to contractors and consumers. “Our Rain Ready® technology means that your project is ready in just two hours, which guards the freshly-painted surface from runs, blisters, or water marks once rain showers begin,” explained Garrison. He added that Sherwin Williams’ premium exterior paint line, Medallion Plus, is “our most premium exterior paint and primer, providing all-season beauty and protection with a flexible finish that resists cracking and peeling.”

He said he’s noted another trend in colour selection, where homeowners are choosing colours that fit the home’s original design. “Historic homes are leaning towards heritage greens and muted blues, Craftsman homes are using earthy greens and warm browns, and modern homes are using charcoal and warm whites.”
Of course, paint needs to withstand everchanging Canadian weather patterns, declared Garrison. “Valspar offers an exterior paint program engineered for Canada’s weather realities, including rain, freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure and moisture, while delivering premium performance.” Photos courtesy of SHERWIN WILLIAMS

Rust-Oleum has long been associated with innovative coatings that protect and enhance surfaces. What many consumers may not know is that the company was founded by Scottish sea captain Robert Fergusson, who discovered that fish oil helped stop the relentless spread of corrosion on the rusty metal deck of his ship; a discovery that inspired the Rust-Oleum brand. For 2026, however, the company is taking a different approach to its Colour of the Year. “Forget chasing trends,” said Cody Whaley, Account Manager, Hardware Channel at Rust-Oleum.

“Rust-Oleum’s Colour of the Year is Zinsser White. Not just any white, but the essential first coat. White isn’t just a colour; it’s the beginning, the unsung hero behind every bold wall and daring accent. It’s not flashy, it’s foundational.” While homeowners often focus on the final colour, Whaley believes the real secret to professionallooking results starts long before the topcoat. “Before the navy, before the terracotta, there was Zinsser White, quietly setting the stage for every colour story,” he said. “You won’t see it in the final shot, but it’s always there.”
“Every DIYer wants pro-level results. But not every DIYer knows the secret: primer,” Whaley added. “Zinsser’s legendary formula turns weekend warriors into finish-line champions. Zinsser primer ensures smooth coverage,
strong adhesion and colour that actually lasts. With 176 years of innovation, performance and trust, Zinsser White has been quietly supporting every trend since 1849.”

At Cloverdale Paints, At Cloverdale Paints, nature-inspired neutrals shape the year ahead, according to Trish Picariello, Colour Specification and Design Specialist. “Exterior colour palettes for 2026 continue to move toward timeless, versatile finishes that complement today’s mix of architectural styles and natural building materials.” This year’s trends build on colours with lasting appeal rather than dramatic shifts, she added. “This gives homeowners confidence that their exterior will remain relevant for years to come.” The popularity of soft, warm neutrals will continue, Picariello declared. As for siding, offwhites remain a preferred choice due to their clean, understated look.

“The contrast between light body colours and darker architectural details continues to define both contemporary and traditional homes,” she added, noting that colours that deliver a subtle warmth pair effortlessly with today’s darker fascia, soffits and window sashes. Homeowners are also looking for colours that create a stronger connection to the surrounding landscape, and earthy greens are gathering momentum. “Muted sage greens are proving especially versatile, offering a fresh alternative to greys while maintaining a natural, understated appearance.” Picariello referenced Cloverdale’s Ground Sage, explaining that it pairs beautifully with stone, wood accents, and black window frames.
If a consumer is looking for a bolder green, Picariello suggests deeper botanical shades. “Colours such as EX192 Tree of Heaven bring richness and depth without feeling overpowering, making them well suited to modern architecture as well as homes in wooded or rural settings.”
with gentle brown undertones that create a welcoming, established appearance, according to Picariello. Taupe complements natural stone, timber features and warm brick. “They provide an adaptable foundation for a wide range of exterior finishes.”
With the popularity of high-contrast colours diminishing, darker greens continue the industry’s move toward palettes inspired by nature.
Builders, designers, and homeowners are searching for looks that feel current today, while remaining timeless into the future. “Together, these trends point toward exteriors that prioritize longevity over novelty. Soft off-whites, grounded greens and warm taupes all offer flexibility across a variety of home styles,” she concluded.
After several years of cooler grey exteriors, the warm taupes are re-emerging in 2026. Once again, homeowners are embracing neutrals

Oriana Gagnon Martinez, Marketing Manager at SICO (Canadian Industries Limited), told Build & Reno Magazine that this year, exterior palettes are taking a definitive turn towards the organic. “The stark, high-contrast bright white and true black modern farmhouse look is stepping aside,” she shared. “In its place, we are seeing a massive surge in colours that remind us of nature.” Greens are trending; from soft-muted sages to olives and deep forests. Nature-inspired hues are allowing homes to blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings, she stated. “When homeowners do look for whites or dark tones, they are opting for soft creams, warm smoky charcoal and browns, rather than icy shades.” With durability a priority, Canadian Industries Limited (CIL) is dedicated to ensuring the product you buy today performs reliably for years to come. “Ultimately, our exterior paints are not
only decorative; they are a high-performance shield designed specifically for our Canadian weather,” said Gagnon Martinez. CIL is focused on maintaining the peak performance of established formulas such as Sico® Super Premium and Sico® Premium, she continued. “Formulated with 100 percent acrylic technology, our products are built from the ground up to provide excellent durability and endure extreme thermal cycling.” Looking beyond 2026, Gagnon Martinez predicts the biggest trend shift is going to be longevity for major projects and a movement towards smaller projects that can instantly boost curb appeal. When it comes to full-exterior siding, the market is prioritizing warm neutrals and natural tones that will continue to look elegant for a decade or more, she noted. “Homeowners are less interested in chasing fast-moving design trends that require a repaint every few years.”

Gagnon Martinez has also observed an increase in weekend projects that focus on smaller surfaces such as front doors, window trims, and outdoor living furniture. “Homeowners are using smaller exterior canvases to express personality,” she said. These smaller, “bite-sized projects” allow consumers to refresh their spaces more frequently and affordably. “Instead of a massive commitment, homeowners are using these architectural accents to introduce bold, sophisticated pops of colour against a timeless backdrop.” Some smaller projects could include adding a rich jewel tone on a front door or updating weathered patio chairs with a sleek, modern charcoal. “We stand apart in the market for one definitive reason: Sico® Super Premium and Sico® Premium exterior paints are engineered specifically to protect against the realities of our Canadian climate,” Gagnon Martinez continued. “Whether facing freezing, sub-zero winters or high-UV summer heatwaves, they move and breathe with your home to resist cracking, peeling and fading.” Versatility and ease of application are also on consumers’ minds. “With application possible down to 2°C, you can confidently extend your painting season early into spring or late into autumn.” With more than 1,000 colours available, Sico® Super Premium’s one-coat coverage can also help maximize efficiency. “You’re cutting your labour time in half without sacrificing protection,” she concluded. Nature-inspired design goes beyond simple or even elaborate outdoor spaces: It is transforming the exterior envelope of the entire home. Greens and inviting neutrals are gaining momentum and increasing in popularity among consumers. It’s a trend we can all warm up to.

For many, it’s also one of the most demanding parts of the job. Producing accurate estimates requires time, expertise and attention to detail. And with more complex building plans, ongoing labour shortages and rising customer expectations, the job has never required more time or precision. That’s why Castle created Estimating & Design Services (EDS). As the first Canadian LBM buying group to offer a centralized estimating program, EDS gives members access to professional estimating expertise, helping them save time, improve accuracy and respond to customers faster, without the expense of building and maintaining an in-house estimating department. MORE THAN AN ESTIMATING SERVICE Behind every estimate is a simple philosophy. For Darren Rest, who manages Castle’s EDS, success has never been about producing more estimates. It’s about giving members something even more valuable: time. “The whole premise is to take the estimating burden off their shoulders,” Darren explains. “This way, they can focus on building relationships and growing their business. Members still oversee the process, but they don’t have to spend hours counting every stick of lumber.” That’s the philosophy behind EDS.

BUILT AROUND THE NEEDS OF INDEPENDENT DEALERS Independent dealers wear many hats. They’re salespeople, project advisors, problemsolvers and trusted partners to contractors and homeowners alike. Every day brings new questions, changing priorities and customers who need answers quickly. The last thing many dealers have time for is spending hours completing detailed material takeoffs. Castle’s EDS was designed to change that.

estimating software or dedicate valuable staff resources to completing estimates by hand.
Delivering that level of support requires more than software.
Rather than replacing the expertise of local dealers, the service strengthens it.
It requires the right partner.
“Our software allows us to build a complete bill of materials directly from the plans,” Darren says. “That means greater consistency, improved accuracy and more confidence when members are preparing quotes for their customers.”
Castle has partnered with a global leader in estimating and design technology. The partnership combines advanced estimating software with knowledgeable professionals who understand the complexities of residential and commercial construction. The result is a service that delivers detailed, consistent material takeoffs while eliminating the need for members to purchase expensive

For some members, that means offering estimating services for the very first time. For others, it means delivering estimates in days instead of weeks. Either way, it creates a better experience for customers while giving members greater flexibility to pursue new opportunities.
“The clarity, reliability and professionalism of the service has helped set us apart from our competitors. EDS has become a trusted partner and a valuable part of our workflow.” — STACY DUGUAY, NORTH DUNDAS BUILDING SUPPLIES, WINCHESTER, ON
CONFIDENCE BUILT INTO EVERY ESTIMATE When it comes to estimating, speed matters. Accuracy matters even more. A missed item or incorrect quantity can lead to unexpected costs, project delays and lost confidence; something no independent dealer can afford. EDS delivers detailed, professional material takeoffs that improve consistency, reduce costly
errors and give members greater confidence in every quote. “Accuracy builds confidence,” Darren says. “When members know their estimates are complete and reliable, they can spend less time secondguessing the numbers and more time focusing on the customer.” That confidence has become a competitive advantage for members already using the service. CREATING CAPACITY FOR GROWTH There are plenty of reasons EDS works; from experienced estimators and proven technology to a streamlined, centralized process. When Darren was asked what makes the program successful, his answer is surprisingly simple. People. For Darren, estimating has never been just about numbers. It’s about creating opportunities for independent dealers to grow and giving all members,

regardless of size, the opportunity to offer a service that is typically available only to larger dealers. Whether it’s bidding on larger projects, shortening turnaround times or expanding the services they offer, EDS gives members the capacity to pursue opportunities they may not have had the time or resources to tackle before. “It’s about organic growth,” Darren explains. “We want members spending their time where it creates the greatest impact; building relationships, winning more business and growing their market.” For Chris Cameron, the impact was immediate.
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF INDEPENDENT DEALERS
digital tools, making the process even more seamless for members.
Innovation isn’t always about introducing a new product.
When all is said and done, Darren says, it’s not about the technology. It’s all about the members. Because every estimate is more than a list of materials. It’s the first step toward helping someone build their dream.
Sometimes it’s about finding better ways to support the people behind the business. As the first Canadian lumber and building materials buying group to offer a centralized estimating service, Castle continues to invest in practical solutions that help independent dealers compete in an increasingly demanding marketplace. And the program continues to evolve. Future enhancements are expected to include expanded estimating capabilities, specialty services and deeper integration with Castle’s
And that’s the foundation Castle has been building all along. It’s another way Castle is investing in its members: giving them more time to do what they do best: serving customers, supporting contractors and strengthening the communities they serve. When independent businesses thrive, communities they serve grow stronger.
