FROM THE COVER ’DERECHO’ National Weather Service officials have confirmed that a tornado touched down in Homewood and Lansing during Tuesday’s powerful derecho, bringing the number of confirmed tornadoes associated with the storm to six. The tornado touched down west of Halsted Street between 183rd and 187th streets, according to the latest National Weather Service assessment. The twister crossed Halsted Street, damaging a strip mall and several buildings within an apartment complex before moving east through a residential neighborhood. Officials reported tree and roof damage to homes along the path. The tornado then crossed a cemetery near Glenwood Thornton Road and moved through the Thornton-Lansing Road Nature Preserve before lifting. The tornado remained on the ground for approximately three miles. It reached estimated wind
speeds of 110 mph and had a maximum width of 100 yards, making it an EF-1 tornado. The National Weather Service’s preliminary tornado track shows the Homewood-Lansing tornado traveled extremely close to another EF-1 tornado that carved a path of more than 25 miles from Frankfort to Crown Point, Indiana.

Tuesday’s derecho, which brought wind gusts approaching 100 mph to parts of the Chicago area, produced several other confirmed tornadoes. An EF-0 tornado struck Oswego, while EF-1 tornadoes were confirmed in Wilmington, Mokena and Tinley Park. An EF-2 tornado also touched down near Monee in Will County before crossing into Indiana and striking St. John. The National Weather Service said the data remains preliminary as officials continue to assess storm damage across the Chicago area.

How to Tell Bees, Hornets and Wasps Apart and Identify Their Differences
Learn the key differences between bees, hornets and wasps, from their appearance and behavior to where they build nests
People who spend any measurable amount of time outdoors likely have crossed paths with various flying insects that cohabitate in a typical yard. Some of the most ardent pollinators and pest control agents also have the potential to be dangerous if provoked. While most bees, wasps and hornets are content to go about their business, their stingers can make these insects formidable foes, particularly to those who are allergic. According to The Best Bees Company, there are more than 20,000 known species of bees and more than 100,000 known species of wasps worldwide. Those who don’t want to get too up close and personal with stinging insects may not know how to tell the different types apart. Bees, wasps and hornets are distinguished by their behavior, waist and body texture. Bees If it has a fuzzy body, it’s a bee. Bees tend to be non-aggressive and may be carrying pollen on their backs. They also live in wax hives. You’ll likely see bees flitting from one flower to another in the warmer weather. Honeybees will die after one sting, advises PBS, but bumblebees and carpenter bees have smooth stingers that will not get stuck, enabling them to sting again. Wasps Wasps are stinging insects which

can be social or solitary. Wasps have smooth, shiny bodies and narrow waists. They can be bright black and yellow or black and white. Wasps can sting repeatedly, says The Spruce, but they may not always be aggressive; it depends on the species. Yellowjackets are a type of wasp. They are sensitive to threats and not afraid
to use their stingers. Another way to distinguish wasps from bees is that wasps hang their legs down while flying and bees keep them tucked in. Hornets Hornets are wasps and tend to be social in nature. They only construct paper nests and can be more aggres-
sive than other types of wasps. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says hornets can be highly defensive with more painful stings, and also may be larger and rounder in size than other wasps. In the United States, the one true hornet species is the European hornet, which nest in trees.
It’s impossible to avoid bees and wasps entirely, but individuals can be mindful of where they are making their nests. As these insects are important to the ecosystem, it’s key not to exterminate them haphazardly. If a nest is problematic, it’s best to have a professional come and relocate or remove it safely.

SENIORS
Seniors can look to various foods to eat a more nutritious diet The right foods and beverages fuel the body and provide the nutrients necessary to maintain health.
But it’s worth noting that the foods a person enjoys during much of their life may not be ideal for them as they age. Dietary needs change as a person gets older. MedlinePlus says the best foods for older adults prioritize nutrient-dense, easy-to-chew foods that are gentle on digestion. These foods also should incorporate a balance of lean proteins to help maintain muscle mass, fiber that promotes regular digestion, and healthy fats to support the brain and heart. Here are some foods seniors can incorporate into their daily diets that may provide that extra spring in their step, courtesy of the National Council on Aging and Healthline. • Dark, leafy greens: Foods like kale and spinach are rich in carotonoids, which may protect the eyes against oxidative damage. Spinach is particularly high in vitamins A and C,
which help moderate blood pressure to protect the heart. Vitamin K is another important nutrient in leafy greens that plays a role in osteoporosis prevention. • Lean protein: Seniors need adequate protein to slow down or prevent the natural loss of muscle that occurs as one ages. A person can use the U.S. Department of Agriculture calculator to figure out how much protein to eat based on their age and other factors. Good sources of protein include lean meat and poultry, seafood, eggs, lentils, beans, nuts, and seeds. • Cruciferous vegetables: These vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and turnips are great sources of fiber, vitamins, and cancer-preventing phytochemicals. • Whole grains: Whole grains provide lasting energy the body needs throughout the day. Quinoa, brown rice and oatmeal are some examples of whole grains. • Healthy fats: Some seniors may have grown up thinking that fats
are something to avoid. However, healthy unsaturated fats are important for heart and brain health. They also are excellent for adding calorie density for those with smaller appetites. Olive oil, nuts and peanut butter are good choices for healthy fats.
• Seeds: A 2022 study found that the nutrients in chia seeds can help prevent cancer, GI tract-related diseases, and cardiovascular disease. Chia seeds also may help people manage their type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Seeds, including flax and hemp, also are high in inflammation-fighting omega-3 fatty acids. • Fruits: Seniors should enjoy around 1.5 to 2 cups of fruits each day. Fruits are an important source of potassium, fiber, vitamin C, folate, and vitamin A. Avocado is loaded with nourishing fats, antioxidants and other nutrients that support health. Dietary choices are important as people get older, and seniors should aspire to maximize the nutrients they consume.
The right foods and beverages fuel the body and provide the nutrients necessary to maintain health.
