Kentucky Man Gets 18-Year Sentence for Mall Shooting Grundy pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a firearm after prosecutors said he fired multiple shots at three people, injuring a woman, in the Yorktown Mall parking lot in 2022. A Kentucky man has been sentenced to 18 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for opening fire at Yorktown Mall in Lombard in November 2022, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced Aug. 10. Ronald Grundy, 26, of Louisville, pleaded guilty Monday in DuPage County Circuit Court to one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony. Judge Margaret O’Connell sentenced Grundy to 18 years in prison following his plea. Grundy has been held at the DuPage County Jail since November 2022. On Nov. 15, 2022, he appeared in bond court, where the court granted the state’s petition to deny him bail. The case against Grundy’s co-defendant, Jakobi Kinsey, 27, of the 3200 block of W. Douglas Boulevard in Chicago, remains pending. Kinsey is charged with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm and three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 1 before Judge O’Connell. According to prosecutors, Lombard police responded to a report of shots fired at Yorktown Mall near the JCPenney parking lot at approximately 3:05 p.m. on Nov. 11, 2022.

Police spoke with three victims — two men and a woman — who allegedly had been confronted by Grundy and Kinsey inside the mall. Grundy was reportedly wearing a ski mask. The victims later left the mall and went to their vehicle. Prosecutors allege that the defendants spotted the vehicle, entered their own vehicle and drove toward the victims. Grundy allegedly leaned out of the passenger-side window and fired multiple shots at the victims, striking the female victim in the arm. The defendants then allegedly fled the area. Police recovered five spent 9mm shell casings while processing the scene. The injured woman was taken to a local hospital, where she underwent surgery to remove the bullet. She has since recovered from her injuries. The investigation led police to a Chicago address, where Kinsey was arrested Nov. 12, 2022. Grundy was arrested Nov. 14 at an address in Cook County.

Explore the various vacation rental options(or replacement)

From condos and beach homes to timeshares and unique stays, travelers have plenty of options to find accommodations that fit their needs, group size and

When the weather heats up, the desire to take a trip away from home may grow. Ruby Home Luxury Real Estate estimates that the United States vacation rental market is $69 billion. It is forecast to grow at a rate of 7.4 percent between 2025 and 2030. Individuals and families have various options to consider when seeking accommodations for their getaways. Widening a search for accommodations may increase comfort and help travelers stretch their vacation dollars further.

Hotels

Timeshares may be a good fit for people who travel frequently. Chase Bank says a timeshare is a contractual commitment to paying for a vacation property at certain times of the year. Many timeshares are located in hotel properties. People who will not use their timeshare slots for the year may be allowed to sublet them to another, enabling vacationers to try out accommodations in an alternate property.

Apartments and condos

Typically located in urban areas or resort compounds, these properties are perfect for couples or small families seeking rooms outside of motels and hotels that still offer shared amenities like pools and fitness centers. Renting a condo for a vacation may be more cost-intuitive than booking a hotel and provide slightly more square footage.

larger groups or families. These are great options when pooling resources with multiple vacationers, as some homes boast four or more bedrooms and can serve as the primary gathering spot for groups. Depending on the vacation home, it may have a pool or other recreational features.

Villas or beach/lake homes

a comparable villa or beach house might be a better option. These options typically offer unparalleled access to sights and amenities while still allowing renters to cook some of their meals at the property, saving on dining out costs.

cused accommodations like yurts or campsites, as well as cultural properties like farmsteads or castles, are some additional options for people looking for a unique vacation experience.

Vacation rentals may offer more space for longer stays, multiple bedrooms, laundry facilities, and kitchens for those who want a more inclusive trip experience.

Top 5 reasons to draw up a will It is easy to put off estate planning for another day. But having a legally binding will drawn up is one of the most important financial and personal decisions a person can make. A will is not merely a document for the wealthy who have significant portfolios and real estate holdings. A will is a vital tool that honors a person’s wishes, protects their assets and spares their loved ones unnecessary hardships during a time of profound grief. Here are the top five reasons why drawing up a will is important. 1. Control asset distribution Without a will, a person will die intestate. According to MetLife, state intestacy laws dictate who inherits a person’s property, regardless of the decedent’s actual relationships or verbal promises. A will gives an individual sole authority to decide exactly who receives their real estate, savings, family heirlooms, and investments, preventing potential disputes among surviving relatives. 2. Appoint a guardian for minor children For parents, this is often the most

critical function of a will. If both parents pass away unexpectedly without naming a legal guardian for their minor children, a court will decide who raises them, indicates Snyder Law. A will allows people to choose a trusted individual who shares their values, ensuring children are cared for by someone who parents and children know and trust.

3. Streamline the probate process All estates must go through probate in the United States. Investopedia says probate is the court-supervised process of distributing assets. Dying without a will complicates and prolongs this process, requiring the court to appoint an administrator and trace legal heirs. A valid will accelerates probate, minimizes legal fees, and allows beneficiaries to access their inheritance much faster. 4. Designate an executor An executor manages the decedent’s estate — paying off final debts, closing accounts, and distributing assets according to instructions, indicates TIAA. By drawing up a will, one can select a reliable, highly capable individual to handle these complex duties, rather than leaving them to the court.

A will is a vital tool that honors a person’s wishes, protects their assets and spares their loved ones unnecessary hardships during a time of profound grief.

5. Minimize estate taxes A will can be structured to reduce the tax burden on heirs, says Empower. Through strategic asset distribution,

establishing trusts or making charitable bequests, a person can shield a larger portion of their estate from inheritance or estate taxes.

Taking the time to draw up a will is a final act of care and responsibility that protects one’s legacy and provides peace of mind for family.
