Resident named county budget director

coMMUnItY By KRIS StaDaLSKy FOR THE SENTINEL Saturday was a great morning for fishing in the lake at Shorewood Glen retirement community. At least 70 grandchildren of neighborhood residents came out for the annual Grandkids Fishing Derby. “The kids have fun, and we get the families to come out,” said Jack Kosinski, resident and member of the Fishermen’s Friends group that puts on the yearly event. Only the grandchildren are allowed to fish, but grandparents and some parents are on the bank helping to untangle lines and baiting hooks. The kids even learn a bit about water and fishing safety, said Kosinski. Like keeping control of your pole so you hook just fish and not nearby fishermen. Fishermen’s Friends work to maintain the quality of the lake so residents have a good place to fish. The lake was stocked with blue gill and channel catfish in 2006 and largemouth bass were added the following year. Because it’s a catch and release lake, the fish are continually growing. Resident fishermen have pulled out a 4 1/2 pound catfish and a 3 1/2 pound bass, said Paul Egbers, Fishermen’s Friends member. But Saturday was all about the grandkids. Ten-year-old Jonathan Schweitzer caught a 16 1/4 inch bass. He was hoping to win his age category for the largest fish, but the derby results weren’t all in yet.
