the more than 1,200 joliet central high school students who packed the auditorium friday for the school’s Veterans day celebration cheered loudly for the veterans who were honored. they were able to participate, as well, when rotc major Phil jayko asked those gathered to stand when the band played the military song associated with the branch of service in which family members served. “my grandpa was in the army reserves,” said senior andrew matichak, a captain in the rotc. “it was nice to see and meet other veterans.” the ceremony was held during the last class block of the day on Friday. Veterans, most in uniform, filled the front four rows of the auditorium, and their names, branches of service, and in some cases, stories, were told.
