Students and guests bow their heads in prayer around the U.S. Flag.
By KriS StadaLSKy FOR THE SENTINEL Christian students all across the nation gathered around flagpoles at their schools at 7 a.m. september 24 to pray, hear scripture readings, sing and worship as part of a national event called “see You at the Pole” (sYatP). students at trinity christian school in shorewood are able to pray at school every day, but not everyone has that choice, said teacher and event organizer Marshall Johnson. the event was started in 1990 in the U.s. because public schools cannot sponsor prayers. some christian students who attend public schools take it upon themselves to pray as a group in the morning since prayer cannot be led by teachers. “(students) in public schools go out to the flag in the morning on their own; we pray here every day,” said Johnson. While the annual event in september is geared more toward public schools, trinity christian celebrates the event on behalf of all christians. they have been participating in sYatP events since 1991. “this is a big day in our country,” Johnson said. “some people have to show a lot of courage to go to the pole. they are free to do it, but they will face persecution for it.” photos by kris stADAlsky

Stretches of Black Road and Illinois 59 soon will be brighter. The village of Shorewood is installing 129 new ornamental streetlights on the two roads. On Illinois 59, the lights will run from the village’s border with Joliet south to Ridge Road. On Black Road, they will be installed between Parkshore Drive and Troy Crossroads School, 210 E. Black Road.A few additional lights will be installed on Vertin Boulevard between Capista Drive and Illinois 59. The village trustees approved payments of a little more than $359,000 for the work during Tuesday’s Village Board meeting. The 35-foot-tall poles will be similar to the ones on Illinois 59 just south of West Jefferson Street, said Chris Drey, public works superintendent. Made of a cast aluminum base and a steel pole, they will be powder coated black. Drey told the trustees the job had been going well. “We’ll start seeing poles go up in the next few weeks,” he said. The workers currently are doing the preliminary work to the lights’ bases, he said. During the Tuesday meeting, the trustees also: • Discussed trick-or-treating times this year. Although the newly issued Village of Shorewood Parks and Recreation Program Guide lists incorrect hours, trick-or-treating will be allowed on Halloween between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., Mayor Rick Chapman said.
