Everyone is hopping on the Ice Bucket Challenge bandwagon, and Shorewood HUGS (Helping You Get Started) is no different. About 30 people came out Sunday to get iced, ice someone they love or just watch and laugh. HUGS members, their friends and family and some who just wanted to support ALS or HUGS, joined in the group challenge on Sunday at the Troy Fire Department on Seil Road. The group idea came from HUGS member Rita Guenther. Several HUGS members had been nominated, or called out, to take the challenge. Guenther’s nomination came from her 2- and 3-year-old nieces. “Who I could not say no to,” Guenther added. So she got everyone together for one big icing. The Troy Fire Protection District agreed to have the event on the lawn in front of Station #2 and even filled the buckets for them. People brought lots of bags of ice to make sure the water was good and cold. “Who I could not say no to,” Guenther added.

The ducks were out of luck. They did not race in Seil Road Park on Saturday. For the first time in the10-year history of the event, the Shorewood Rotary canceled its Ducks 4 Bucks fundraiser on the DuPage River. The end loader would not drop thousands of yellow rubber duckies over the side of the Seil Road Bridge and into the current. The water simply was too high; it wouldn’t be safe. The organizers made the decision around 9 a.m. Saturday morning, said Jennie Mills of Shorewood, the club’s president. “We don’t want to lose anybody,” Mills said. The members of the group spend a lot of time in the typically knee-high water, using nets to round up the bathtub toys at the end of the race. On Saturday, the water was about five feet deep and it was moving swiftly. “We saw someone kayaking this morning and we weren’t sure why they were even paddling,” she said, laughing a little. The threat of a thunderstorm didn’t help matters. The disc jockey who was going to provide music was concerned about the rain in the forecast and canceled as did several other vendors, Mills said. The race is the Rotary’s only fundraiser, explained Misha Garafalo of Shorewood, one of the group’s past presidents. The money funds the group’s scholarship program for local students and other good works. For a >> See ducks | page 2
