Despite the threat of thunderstorm,hundredsofvillagers who wished to honor Illinois veterans attended Shorewood’s Memorial Day celebration.

The third annual program, hosted in the village’s Towne Center Park, expanded upon previous year’s celebrations. A parade featuring local Boy and Girl Scouts, emergency response vehicles from surrounding cities and patriotic residents was followed by a wreathlaying ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial Fountain.

“Without these brave men and women, there would surely be more cruelty and dictatorships in the world,” Chapman said during his speech.

Following the service, the Joliet American Legion Band performed a concert that included selections ranging from Richard Wagner to James Bond.

Shorewood’s third annual Memorial Day Program honored veterans and military personnel from Shorewood.

The Memorial Day celebration began in 2013 with the construction and dedication of the Veteran’s Memorial Fountain. Built in a star shape and featuring more than 200 names of veterans engraved

in brick, the fountain was ready for dedication in May of that year.

Chapman, a Vietnam veteran and a longtime supporter of military personnel, wanted to expand the programming and provide an

entire Memorial Day celebration for Shorewood residents.

Job Corps students lend hand for annual ‘flags in’ event Volunteers help mark graves for Memorial Day at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery With more than 40,000 graves at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, a group of students from the Joliet Job Corps Center had their work cut out for them Friday morning.

“This is a really big cemetery,” said Trent Polk, a 19-year-old student who is being trained at the center to be a security officer.

Polk and other Joliet Job Corps Center students joined hundreds of additional volunteers who had gathered near the cemetery’s Flag Pole Assembly Area for the annual Memorial Day weekend event known as “flags in.”

Each May for more than 65 years, mental health professionals from across the country work to inform and educate the communities they serve about a wide range of mental health issues that impact almost all of our lives.

The Will County Health Departmentwantseveryonetoknow that one in four adults experiences mental health problems each year.

These problems can often lead to the onset of serious conditions, including major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Children and adolescents are also severely impacted. Approximately half of chronic mental illness begins by age 14, and almost 75 percent of all chronic mental illnesses appear by age 24.

He was right. About 30 minutes after the volunteers began, the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery was blanketed in flags.

Sierra Jordan, 20, who also is training at the center to be a security officer, was impressed by the beauty of the grounds and the precise order of the rows of headstones.

“I was amazed by it,” she said.

Job Corps was created in 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson in order

to provide vocational training for disadvantaged young people and help them join the workforce.

Young people who attend the JJCC, 1101 Mills Road, can earn their high school diploma or GED, while also receiving training in 1 of 8 trades.

What don’t Illinois legislators understand?

I’m reading an e-mail update from a local Illinois senator. My question to our local politicians is “What don’t you understand?”

Why aren’t you doing the work of the people? You meet, you talk, you waste our time and money, and you resolve nothing.

You can’t spend more than the revenue available. You start with expenses. You must pay for essentials such as salaries, supplies, employees, vendors, healthcare and pensions, security, seniors, Medicaid, children, and education. You check each and every budget item to determine if you can find savings and efficiencies.

All other expenses are probably

wants vs. needs. If needs outweigh revenue, then you must raise taxes.

Hopefully, if that that is not the case, then wants get pared down to make the budget balance. Layoffs, closing of want areas, unfortunately, have to be considered.

Keeping business in the state, traffic problems and roads, manufacturing, development, recycling, scholarships, crime, jobs, libraries, museums, etc. are all important, but they need to be subject to cuts. A need must be provided for; a want waits for finances.

The farce of the Pension Reform Bill was likely to be overturned so the legislators can say they tried. Instead

change the constitution.

Pension, tort, medical reform must be properly acted upon. Soon the legislative session will end with basically nothing again being accomplished.

You are either part of the solution or the problem. Unfortunately, most legislators are the latter.

The work is important. If you can’t and/or won’t do what’s needed, make the hard decisions, then resign now and make room for someone who will.

We, the proud hardworking people of Illinois, deserve better, much better.

University of St. Francis recognized for historic preservation Motherhouse, Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center lauded by city council The University of St. Francis recently received two awards for historic preservation from the city of Joliet for “outstanding efforts” to adapt and reuse two of its existing buildings.

The Joliet City Council recognized the university at its May 19 meeting regarding the adaptive reuse of the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center in downtown Joliet, formerly the Mode Theater building, and the Motherhouse at the Wilcox Street campus in Joliet. The city and the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission recognized the university’s “vision and leadership” in efforts to save the buildings and adapt their use to “serve future generations of students.”

Councilwoman Jan Quillman presented the awards to Elizabeth Laken, vice president for administration and finance at USF.

The Joliet Historic Preservation Commission nominated the university for the awards.

The Mode building, now the Plaster Center, has been part of the downtown Joliet skyline since 1908 and used primarily as a theater until the 1980s. BMO Harris Bank acquired the building and then, in 2012, donated it to USF. After a $2.7-million renovation, the Plaster Center opened to classes in August 2014. The Plaster Center is home to the university’s Recreation, Sport & Tourism Management Department and the history, political science, and criminal and social justice departments. The building also houses the university’s logistics and entrepreneurship programs and serves as a business incubator.

“The Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center has truly been

a community project,” said Laken, who thanked BMO Harris bank for donating the building. “The Plaster Center is now a state-of-the-art learning environment that is loved by our faculty and students.

Students have been asking for more classes at the Plaster Center, a wonderful testament to the urban downtown environment.”

The Motherhouse on Plainfield Road was built in 1881 and served as the home of the Sisters of St. Francis, the university’s founders and sponsors. The building now serves as the university’s “front door” and houses the Welcome Center, president’s office, admissions offices, Alumni Center, Student Center, chapel, a bistro and pub, and conference rooms.

The Cecily & John Leach College of Nursing is also located in the Motherhouse.

“The expansive Motherhouse has been a work in progress for many years, and we are pleased to say that this iconic building is now the front door to our campus,” Laken said. “It is very important to us, our founders and sponsors, the Sisters of St. Francis and the Joliet community that this building continues in the spirit of the sisters as the welcoming heart of the university.”

The university’s Plaster Center project was also recognized at the first Downtown Joliet Awards Reception in March with the Professional Institution of the Year Award, chosen by the downtown Joliet stakeholders and Joliet City Center Partnership Committee and board members.

CHARLESTON – Two ended up being a lucky number for Minooka’s Ashleigh Wilson.

The senior won a pair of medals Saturday at the state meet at Eastern Illinois University and came away with a second-place finish.

Wilson finished runner-up in the 400 with a time of 55.54.

“Of course I wanted to win,” Wilson said. “I felt really good. I have faster times to come and I can still improve.

I knew since I ran a 57 outdoor I could run a 55 indoor. I trained a lot harder than I did before and took the sport more seriously than before. It feels really good.”

Just a few races later she closed her career with a fifth place showing the

200, coming home in 25.35.

“I really wanted to break 25,” Wilson said. “I started running my sophomore year and these are my first two individual medals, so that is pretty good.”

Ashley Tutt, a sophomore, also brought home a medal for the Indians.

Tutt finished in seventh place in the 3200 run with a time of 10:54.55.

“I’m really happy with my time,” Tutt said. “It tied my PR. Last year I let all the stress get to me and this year I had to stay focused.

“The pack helped. I knew there were a lot of people behind me and I had to get out fast.”

Joliet West senior Tom Carney advanced to the state tournament his first three seasons on the team.

And while he made it four trips in a row over the weekend, the route he took was different.

Carney abandoned the singles draw this season and teamed with freshman Morgan Red to win the Joliet West Sectional doubles title.

The duo defeated Nick Urban and Nathaniel Burner of Lemont 6-3, 6-7(3-7), 6-3 for the title. “I wanted to change things up

Minooka made a strong showing at the at the Plainfield North boys track and field Sectional Thursday night at Plainfield Central, advancing 10 events to the state meet that will be held next weekend at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Junior Justin Wolz paced the Indians, winning both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. He won the 110 hurdles in 14.53 and the 300 hurdles in 39.03.

“I know there is time to drop from that race,” Wolz said after the 300 hurdles. “That is a good thing going into next week. The big thing is how far I have come this season and I have one more meet to show what I’ve got.”

Also advancing in two individual events is Peter Andreano, who the

high jump in 6-feet, 7-inches, while he took third in long jump in 22-4.

The senior has advanced to state every year in the high jump, while this will be his second trip in long jump.

In other field events, Kevin Lam placed second in the shot put in 5311, while Ryan Pullara placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing 13-9.

Sophomore distance runners Soren Knudsen advanced to state for the first time, as he finished seventh in the 3200 in 9:25.1, advancing on time.

“I had to run a lot of that race by myself,” he said. “I am so happy it went out fast because that is what I needed to qualify. I am going to state as a sophomore, so what more could I ask for? I am so happy, it means so much and you can never take this for granted, no matter how old you are.”

Three Indian relay teams also advanced to the state meet.

LOCKPORT The Porters made sure not to go home empty handed as for the second straight year the 4x800 relay team came back from an 11th place seed time in prelims to medal at state, finishing with a time of 9:22.51, good for eighth place.

“Last year entering finals we were ranked 11th also,” junior Morgan Bollinger said. “We knew we had a shot to be all-state. It is a great feeling to be up there again.”

“It is the greatest feeling ever to finish your high school season with your teammates and medal,” Haley Beaumont said.

Beaumont, Emmie Hahn and Bollinger were all returners from last year, while sophomore Kayla Isom earned her first medal.

“It feels amazing,” Isom said. “They medaled last year and I didn’t want to disappoint them. But they were really encouraging and helped me have a better attitude.”

“We definitely wanted to bring back something for our school,” Hahn said.

Lane Kladic missed finals in both her throwing events, finishing with a shot put of 37-feet, 11.5-inches and a discus throw of 118-3.

Jaclyn Greci had a time of 12.82 in the 100 and 26.27 in the 200.

Carolyn Dietz had a best jump of 34-5.25 in the triple jump.

JOLIET WEST Melzina Johnson missed finals in the long jump by less than two inches, finishing with a jump of 16-feet, 10.75-inches.

Johnson teamed with Jessica Orr, Kristine Bourg and Brandy Teague to run a time of 50.04 in the 4x100 relay.

I have never played doubles before and I like it. We compliment each other, he has the big serve that I don’t have.”

Carney said he has enjoyed the mid-season decision.

“It is a lot of fun,” he said. “I have another guy who is a lot like me and we both get pumped up on the court and we feed off each other’s energy and it is a high energy match.”

While advancing to state was the first goal, the duo has no plans to stop here.

“The season is already a success because we made it to state,” Red said. “But we want to go deep into state. We want to get to that quarterfinal at least, so we will see how it goes.”

In the singles draw, a pair of locals squared off in the title match, as Lockport freshman Jack Randall defeated Joliet Catholic Academy junior Jack Geissler for the crown.

“Saturday was not as much pressure on me because I already made it,” Randall said. “Yesterday,

there was pressure, but the season was not going to be over no matter what.”

Randall’s goal is to win two matches at the state finals next weekend.

Not only so he has a successful

meet, but so he can knock his older brother Lucas from the Lockport record books.

“I want 34 wins,” Randall said.

“I have 32 now and the most in school history by a freshman is 33 and that is by my brother.”

Troy schools offer summer reading program Reading initiative open to Troy students, siblings

Three schools in Troy School District 30C are partnering with the Shorewood-Troy Public Library to open its doors this summer for the Troy Library Summer Reading Program.

Troy Shorewood, Hofer and Heritage Trails Elementary Schools will each open one morning a week for the program, which is geared towards young readers. The program runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 16 to July 23.

Troy Heritage Trail will participate on Tuesdays, Troy Hofer will participate on Wednesdays and Troy Shorewood will participate on Thursdays.

The program is for Troy students up to eighth grade and their younger siblings and will include reading aloud, crafts and prizes, in addition to book checkouts. The theme of the program is “Every Hero has a Story.”

Students must be registered

by June 2 and may do so at the Troy School District 30C website, www.troy30c.org, under the LRC Resources tab. The kickoff day is June 13 at the Shorewood-Troy Public Library.

Troy Hofer Learning Resource Director Brenda Bertino said the program, funded through a state grant, has been a popular one.

“It’s always a blast,” Bertino said. “It’s important to remember to incorporate reading into children’s summers. It helps stave off that summer slump.”

More than 500 children enrolled in the program last summer, according to the district.

The expanded programming included participation from local scouting units. Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 256 and Girl Scout Service Unit 719 marched in the parade and color guard, with individual scouts paired with veterans and flags representing different branches of the military. The color guard, comprised of veterans from the nearby Shorewood Glen retirement community, felt immense pride for the younger

generation during the parade and ceremony.

“The scouts have all been wonderful and respectful,” said Tom Mara, a Vietnam veteran and returning participant who held the Marines flag during the parade and ceremony. “I can’t tell you the feelings I have for the young people interested in this, and I think what Shorewood has been putting on for a few years now has been great, and the response has been fantastic.”

Fellow color guard member and U.S. Air Force veteran Willie Bibbs agreed.

“We’re very honored by the amount of people that come out,” he said. “It’s been great to do this the past couple of years.”

Enthusiasm has also grown for the parade, which

featured children and families decorating their bikes in patriotic colors to ride behind the veterans. Red, white and blue streamers and pinwheels adorned many handlebars and wheels, and many adults dressed in American flag headbands and T-shirts to honor the military members.

“We get more attendance and enthusiasm every year,” said Denise Schmidt, special events director for the village. “The amount of people turning this into an annual tradition is very encouraging, and we couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather.”

With more parade marchers and concertgoers than ever, the village said the event is set to expand even more next year.
