Locals featured in horror, comedy filmed in Joliet Crews began filming ‘Kingfisher’ in August

Joliet resident Kristin Haller said she was ecstatic to hear that an independent movie was being filmed in her city.

So when the opportunity arose to appear as an extra in the movie, she couldn’t resist.

“To be honest, I hear something’s coming to Joliet and you get to act, to pretend to be something different, so it’s just exciting to do something like that,” Haller said.

The crew for the independent movie “Kingfisher” started filming throughout the city of Joliet late last month. The movie, which takes place in the fictional town Kingfisher, is a horror-comedy by movie producer Brett Hays.

“It’s a city where ghosts and humans come together; there’s a ghost town and a regular town,” Hays said. “It just kind pokes fun and has fun with those genres.”

Hays said the script for Kingfisher is different from many

of his past projects, and that’s what drew his interest.

“I’ve produced a lot of independent features in the Illinois area,” he said. “A lot of the crew on this film is a lot of the crew we’ve worked with on numerous features.

Although he’s never worked on a project in the comedy-horror genre, Hays noted that one common thread, trust, serves as a link between his past films and his latest project, Kingfisher.

“The thing about making film is it’s such a collaborative medium,” he said. “If you look, there’s 50 people here they’re all doing their specific job—producers and production. It’s all about trusting people to do their job.

“We have full trust in each department that they’re doing their job. The thing you see happening over all these films is finding the right people in Illinois and this area that we can bring on to come play in our sandbox for a month.”

“One of the things that I enjoy is coming into towns that maybe don’t have a lot of filming going on,” he said. “Working with the city, the mayor; working with the local resources to try to find places to film or people that will want to be in the movie. A lot of making film is not just about finding a crew... but finding local resources that will support the film.”

Haller said she loves how the film’s producers incorporated various parts of the city into the movie.

“I think, too, Joliet has so much history,” she said. “I love that they’re [filming] in the old historic district.”

Hays said the reason they want to continue making films in this

area is economic growth.

“We’re an independent film but the money we are spending, we’re making an effort to spend it here,” he said. “The caterers are from here. The hotels are here.

Whatever we can spend money on, we try to spend it here… That’s what films do, they can help economic growth.”

All of Kingfisher is filmed exclusively in Joliet.

Haller, who was among numerous locals appearing as extras in the movie, said she’s lived in Joliet all of her life.

“You get very proud that, ‘oh, my gosh.’ they’re filming in Joliet,’” Haller said. “You just really want to contribute in any way you can.

It’s definitely a bonus that I get to have my hair done and make up and be a ghost, because obviously that doesn’t happen.”

As part of the production, Haller plays a ghost that is from the 1940s or 1950s. She said she’s fascinated by all of what she’s seen while working on set.

“I think the makeup is fantastic,” Haller said. “They’re so talented. We look, like, dead people. They put paint all over your body and they kind of make you necrotic fingers, so very, very impressed.”

Haller continued to explain why she views being in the film as a positive.

“I think the kind of thing that I’ve appreciated so much is you see the behind the scenes and how many little pieces there are that this production put together,” she said. “You can actually sit in a movie theater and watch it… I got to see how it was made. That’s so fascinating to me.”

Winners of Shorewood baby contest revealed Beautiful babies had their chance to shine at the Kiwanis Club of Shorewood Baby Contest, held during the Crossroads Festival.

Babies under 6 months of age and 48 months were judged in a preliminary photo round by members of the community.

The 27 finalists appeared at the Shorewood Crossroads Festival for final judging by a panel of three judges.

Two men charged in Louis Joliet Mall shooting Incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Aug. 30

One suspect sustained nonlife threatening injuries during a shootout with Drug Enforcement

Administration agents last week outside of the Louis Joliet Mall.

Two men were charged in connection to the incident, which occurred around 5:30 p.m.

Aug. 30 in a parking lot several yards away from the entrance to

a Tilted Kilt restaurant located inside the mall.

Adan Godinez, 31, of Morris, was charged with discharge of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime and conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Fernando Godinez, 45, of Cicero was also charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine

and one count of possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

DEA special agent Leo Hawkins said the two men were going to sell 2 kilograms of cocaine to agents when the incident occurred. The drugs would have sold for approximately $70,000

on the streets, according to the DEA. Hawkins said gunfire was exchanged when agents moved in to place the men under arrest.

Joliet McDonald’s celebrates grand reopening downtown Store hosted VIP party Aug. 25

City employees, Joliet Chamber members and representatives from area schools joined McDonald’s staff to celebrate the grand reopening of the Broadway Street location.

The store hosted a VIP party, complete with cake and a ribbon cutting, on Aug. 25. The event also featured complimentary McDonald’s appetizers and smoothies, and even featured a special appearance by Ronald McDonald.

Marvin Spence, owner operator, welcomed friends,

colleagues and area officials to the new store, located at 1555 N. Broadway.

Joliet Mayor O’Dekirk was among those who spoke at the grand opening celebration. He

said the city is thrilled to have Spence at this location and thanked him for his involvement in the community.

Spence said he was honored to have so many of Joliet-area VIPs attend the event.

The stores is planning to hold grand re-opening events through Sept. 11.

Lockport Community Block Party organized for national ‘Back to Church’ Sunday Local churches to bring Christian outreach festival to Dellwood Park Local churches are uniting in Lockport to host an evangelistic community outreach event in honor of National Back to Church Sunday.

A Chicagoland grassroots ministry called the Sozo Group is planning the event, along with a local 40-person committee that represents 14 area churches.

The community block party is scheduled for Sept. 18 from 1-6 p.m. at Dellwood Park.

The Block Party at Dellwood Park is presented by Sozo and sponsored

by more than 20 area churches across many denominations. The free outreach event will feature music, a comedy team, activities for kids and food. All of the entertainment, activities, and food are provided free of charge to the public.

“We need to reinforce to the community the benefits of belonging to a local church,” ministry founder Jess Olivito said.

“We’re grateful to all those who have supported the vision so far. “[We] are proud that this event can

be offered free of charge.”

Several genres of music will be performed throughout the day, including pop, Latin, R&B, gospel, praise and worship, and Christian rap. Several local speakers and entertainers will offer encouragement between concert performances.

The night will conclude with a Unity Worship Service that starts at 5:30 p.m.

The Sozo Group is a collaborative of Chicago-area Christian worshippers, musicians, speakers and artists.

Presence St. Joseph auxiliary to host annual fashion show Brunch and beverages will be provided with tickets being sold for $50 each For several years, Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s auxiliary has been working with local boutique owners to showcase

fashion styles and trends to residents in and around Joliet.

That tradition will continue Sunday during the eighth annual

fashion show bruncheon. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, 333 N. Madison, Joliet.

This year’s show will feature fashions by Sweet Pea and Me of Plainfield and Chico’s of Orland Park. In recognition of 9/11, the Joliet West High School Honor Guard will present the colors.

Auxiliary honorary chair Jeanette D’ Arcy, along with Chair Pam Bowden and co-chair Gloria Dollinger, will host the event.

Organizers say the fashion show and brunch will feature a $1,000 cash raffle, gift baskets and additional silent auction items.

Net proceeds will go to benefit the auxiliary’s Pledge to the Foundation in support of the emergency department renovation.

Brunch and beverages will be provided. Tickets are $50 each.

“I really enjoyed how everyone worked together to build a better battery,” said Sofia, a junior at Joliet Central. “This event gave me an opportunity to learn how to communicate and work on my time management skills.”

students to explore and embrace the possibilities of science and engineering in an exciting and collaborative way.

Joliet Central High School science teacher Eric Jern said students who participated in the event will remember the experience for a long time.

“How do you go about getting 80 kids excited about battery science and energy,” Jern asked. “Kudos to JCESR for organizing an event that did that.”

Montessori Society certification at Seton Montessori Institute in Clarendon Hills and has several years experience as a Montessori teacher. She received her bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Shannon Duffy to St. Joseph Academy,” said Jan Novotny, head of school. “She comes to us with a wealth of experience and an enthusiastic and positive attitude.

We know she will be a wonderful addition to our unique school.”

St. Joseph Academy is located in Joliet’s City Center on the southeast corner of North Ottawa Street and Crowley Avenue, in the Friends of Community Public Art building.

Teacher selected for Those Who Excel award Joliet Central High School teacher Patti Edwards honored

The Illinois State Board of Education selected Joliet Central High School teacher Patti Edwards as a 2016-17 Those Who Excel education award recipient.

This award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the state’s public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools. Recipients receive recognition at a special banquet held in October.

Edwards has taught Adapted Physical Education at Joliet Central High School since 1988.

She has also served as the chair of the subject area committee, a snowball leader and as a Miracle League baseball team coach.

“What makes Patti so special is that she works with special needs students on a daily basis with a caring team of teachers,” said Angel Hauert, Academy Coordinator at Joliet Central High School. “She is passionate about her content area and loves her students. I believe that she was put on this Earth to do what she is doing, and that is teaching.”

Edwards also established the Peer Trainer program shortly after being hired. This program allows Joliet Central students to work one-on-one in their physical education class with students who are mentally and/ or physically challenged. This program has inspired peer trainers to pursue careers in the special education field.

The school said the main focus of the adapted physical education and peer trainer programs are to accept differences in others.

Students build relationships, learn it is more about ability than disability, participate in many activities and have fun.

In addition to teaching, Edwards, along with Christiansen, worked to bring the Rachel’s Challenge program to Joliet Central High School in 2009.

Inspired by the life of Rachel Scott, the first person killed in the Columbine tragedy, Edwards and Christiansen organized a school and community assembly attended by thousands to start a “chain reaction of kindness.”

After the event, Edwards cofounded the Friends of Rachel Club. The club holds monthly birthday parties for residents at a local homeless shelter, collects clothing for people in need, and volunteers at numerous community events, where students paint faces of children and provide other services.

To further spread the message of compassion and acceptance, Edwards worked to secure donations and funding for two Peace Poles at the entrance of the school that relay the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in 13 languages.

“Her initiative has left an enduring visual reminder that conflicts can be resolved peacefully,” a school district news release stated.

Edwards has also been awarded the 2010 Joliet Area Great Teacher Award, the 1999 Sam’s Club Teacher of the Year and is a Michael Jordan Grant Recipient.

Having a physical list prevents forgetting things, reminds us what to focus on

Get the oil changed, plan dinner party, write thank you notes – these are the items on my to-do list for today. And I mean a physical list, not just some ideas floating around in my head. Why do I need an actual list for only three things?

Having a physical list prevents me from forgetting things, reminds me of what to focus on and frees me from the stress of having to remember. A physical list is different from having it in my head – it’s like a best friend who gently reminds me what and when I should be working on things to keep me out of trouble. It puts me in control of my day, and it can do the same for you. Whether you prefer your lists in handwritten (my personal preference) or electronic form, here are some of my favorite lists that you may want to create for yourself:

MASTER TO-DO LIST—This is where I capture things I have to do that I’m not quite sure when I’ll do. For example, I want to research buying a new tree for my backyard. I could just choose a date

to do it and jot it down in my planner.

However, I’m not quite sure when I’ll do it. So rather than trusting that I’ll remember to do it at some point, I’ve added it to my master to-do list. I review this list once a week and schedule things once I know when I’ll do them.

WEEKLY TO-DO LIST—My weekly to-do list contains things I want to remember to do every week: water the houseplants, plan next week’s meals, prepare for next week’s clients, etc.

DAILY TO-DO LIST—I have two kinds of daily to-do lists; one is for today’s unique tasks – three to five things I want to get done today that I write in my planner. I also have a daily list of recurring tasks to do each day: water outdoor flowers, thaw tomorrow’s dinner, check my social media sites, etc.

Although I remember to do most of these things without looking at the list, having them written down keeps items from being forgotten (and keeps my flowers alive).

SHOPPING LISTS—I have running lists for a variety of stores that I add to whenever I think of something I need: the grocery store, general merchandise store, home improvement store and clothing store. Listing items by store simplifies shopping and help prevent me from forgetting to get something while at the store.

DISCUSS LIST—I talk by phone once a week with my son who lives out of state. Throughout the week I often think of things I want to mention to him during our call – they’re not important enough to call about right away and also aren’t worthy of the time it would take to send a text or email.

My list lets me hang up from our weekly calls not regretting that I forgot to mention something. You might have a similar list for collecting questions you want to ask the doctor on your next visit, questions for your next parent-teacher conference, etc.

Parenting a child with a disability is no easy task After killing her daughter Courtney, 26, who had cerebral palsy, by placing capsules in her feeding tube, Bonnie Liltz then tried to commit suicide. She was charged with first-degree murder.

Sadly, her sentence was reduced from a possible 14-year prison term for manslaughter to four years. Had the original charge of first-degree murder stuck, a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years would have applied.

According to the Chicago Tribune, “The legislature intentionally made reckless death a probationable offense.”

Robert Loeb, a Chicago criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor, said last week, “And we should see some probation given for deaths under some

cases. This sounds like the case.”

The Chicago Tribune reported that Stephen Drake, of the disabilityrights group Not Dead Yet, said this is yet another case where a child with a disability is viewed as a burden and parents who care for them viewed as saints.

Courtney was unable to perform most of her daily activities without assistance; her mother, and killer, had numerous health problems. Certainly, these pressures can take a toll on anyone. But, do they justify the murder of one’s child?

Is a four-year prison stay enough for this horrid crime?

I have cerebral palsy. For the past few years, my ability to perform many

of the tasks that I once was able to do has decreased. Like thousands of people with disabilities, I hire personal assistants to do whatever I cannot. I still work full time, pay taxes and participate in all society has to offer. That said, many people who are currently disability-free cannot fathom living in my “condition.”

Parenting a child, disabled or not, is no easy task. Community resources must be available to prevent the unnecessary deaths of more people like Courtney.

What better way to honor this innocent victim?

Kelly Murphy has had her name affixed to the wall of the Joliet Catholic Academy gymnasium ever since she was the 2008 Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year.

On September 1, Murphy again had a banner unfurled in her honor, this time as she returned to JCA as an Olympic bronze medalist.

“It has been a while since I have been back here and I am really excited I got to come back and share my medal and experience with JCA and all the people from my hometown of Wilmington and the people of Joliet,” Murphy said. “It was amazing how many people reached out and were supporting me. It is so nice I could come back and share it with them. I have a lot of memories [of JCA]. I loved playing here. It is great to see that the fans are still growing and the HillZone is just as rowdy as ever. I had some of the best volleyball experiences and matches of my life in this gym and I was happy coming back here, it all came flooding

The details: Here it is - Joliet West’s rematch with the SPC team that beat the Tigers in the playoffs just two years ago.

Oswego has been at the forefront of the league since it was formed and so far has showed no signs of letting up. There may be some teams that will give the Panthers some pressure this year, the question is, will it be Joliet West.

West has a young team, but needs to show the pride and passion to avenge the loss for those before them.

Home field advantage would help here as well, so the Wild West needs

game time 1 p.m. Saturday to turn out in force.

That is not to say getting into East Suburban Catholic Conference play is by any means easier, but better the devil you know, right?

Keys to the game: The key for the Hillmen, especially early in the season, is to feed junior wing back Ke’Von Johnson.

Johnson stepped in as a sophomore as showed his mettle a year ago. All he needs is a crack of daylight to make a big play and if the young offensive line can get him those cracks, JCA could start the

game time 12:30 p.m. Saturday ESCC season off on a positive note.

Cross country teams look for success Fall preview responses were submitted by coaches and all responses are in their words, edited for space and style.

Joliet West BOYS Cross Country Coach: Brian Newman Key returners: Jeremy Sikes, a senior. He’s our captain, along with Andrew Limacher, a junior, the cocaptain. We’re hoping to see the summer work pay off with early PRs so we can build toward something special in October.

Key newcomers: Freshmen Julian Rosenbach and Zach Bickerton. They had strong summers, and I’m expecting possibly both to join us on our postseason roster at the varsity level.

Goals: Our goal is really to overachieve. For a team that averages about 32 runners, we graduated 23 seniors the last two years, so with only two seniors, we’re going to have to work even harder to be successful, but the team is buying in and putting in work.

Keys: Our motto is ‘always one more’. We talk about that with hill repeats, with core work, with long runs.

Do we have it in us to do one more? So I think the key to achieving anything this year will be the willingness to do work, even more than they have in the past.

By the end of the year you expect: I expect to have a healthy, strong group of guys who are proud of the journey they’ve taken this year.

Coach quote:“If we focus on the right things (health, diet, strength, sportsmanship, attitude and effort), then we will have a season that we will be proud of and remember for a long time.”

Joliet West girls cross country Coach: Matt Almon Key returners: Junior Maddie Blaauw has high expectations for herself and as the season progresses and she comes closer to those goals it will continue to improve our team and challenge others to work harder.

Bella Betlejeski had a surprise freshmen year followed with an excellent summer and we are looking for her to continue her improvement as a runner and contribute to our team.

Key newcomers: Currently half of our team are new to our program this season so it is hard to know at this time who will be getting into shape and peaking in October for us. We do have a nice talented group of freshmen coming in that have had a good summer including Liz Gomes, Hannah Konieczny, Ashley Lang, and Yesenia Suarez Goals: As a team our goal is the same each year and that is to qualify for the IHSA State meet. This year we want the girls to focus on their individual goals first with the mindset if they set and achieve their personal goals everything we want to achieve as a team will happen.

Keys: Staying health and peaking at the correct time. Last year we peaked a little early and we had to fight though a few injuries that really hurt us in the post season.

By the end of the year you expect: That each girl improves as a runner and reaches their highest ability in October.

Joliet Central boys cross country Coach: Doug Cherry Key returners: Oscar Tejeda, Andre Martinez and Nick Rios return from our team that placed

second in the SWSC and qualified for the state meet.

Key newcomers: Leo Patino is our most improved runner. He has worked hard this summer and it looks like he will contribute to our varsity team this season Goals:We move to the SPC, so we want to develop a team that will be competitive in the new conference.

This is definitely a re-building year for us.

Keys We lost Raul Rosendo, David Carter, Vince Moreno and Francisco Saenz to graduation.

Those are big shoes to fill. We will need to find some runners that are able to step up and be solid 4-5-6-7 runners for us.

Lockport boys cross country Coach: Zachary Sartori Key returners: Junior Cade Music leads the pack. Hope to see him break 15 min for three miles this year. Sophomore Donovan Paske is currently running No. 2, may break into the No. 1 spot later in the season. Seniors Drew Elwood and Luke Czerwonka are both working hard and challenging younger runners to get out of their comfort zone.

Key newcomers:Junior David Krzysiak is out for the first time. He was a soccer player and is going to be a big contributor this season.

Freshman Aiden Pajeau is looking to break into the top seven this year.

Goals: As a team our goal is to finish in the top five at sectionals this year. It will be a lot of work, but I think the boys can do it.

Keys: Hard work and focus. Our biggest weakness right now is that we lose focus on the goal to often and our workouts suffer because of it. We’ll be working to improve our focus and dedication.

By the end of the year you expect: We expect these boys to become stronger runners. It would be very nice to see the Porters at the state meet again this year.

Coach quote: This is their team (the boys) and their success depends on how hard they’re willing to work to achieve their goals.

Minooka girls golf Coach: Joe Host Key returners: Maddie Erickson, Miranda Sharp, Hailey Arlis and McKayla Holmes.

Key newcomers: Lauren Goggins, Kayla Faron, Rachel Kirkolis, Grace Feigl and Jaylynn Martin are juniors.

Goals: We are looking to repeat as SPC conference champs, win regionals and qualify for state as a team Keys: The keys to achieving these goals is to have our girls will need to continue to challenge themselves throughout the season. We will need to lock in our routines and trust in all the hard work they have put in over the years.

By the end of the year you expect: By the end of the year I expect our scores to become more consistent regardless of the course we are playing. We will manage the course better and limit the mistakes.

Coach quote: I am really excited about this group and all the hard work they have put in. They have set their goals high and have embraced the challenge of reaching those goals. We have great team chemistry and that helps when the girls want to be around each other. They are always pulling for each other and that has made us a stronger team.

minooka @ plainfield e The details: Plainfield East is a very young team this year and Minooka is just the opposite. The Indians veterans, however, can’t look past the young Bengals.

Keys to the game: Like it will have to do all season, Minooka has to worry more about itself.

The Indians have talent on offense and need to get that running at a high clip every week in order to push to the top of the

Southwest Prairie Conference.

A week one loss to Oswego may have put a damper on Minooka winning the league, but maybe not.

The Indians exposed the Panthers and showed they are beatable, so Minooka can’t waste any more opportunities and hold hopes for some help with the Panthers along the way.

lockport @ lincoln way c The details: With the defection of Joliet West and Joliet Central from the SouthWest Suburban Conference, the divisions are a thing of the past and Lockport opens with Lincoln-Way Central, a team that had normally been a cross over.

capable of making a big catch.

That, coupled with a consistent running game, could take Lockport to the playoffs this season – somewhere it hasn’t been in five years.

After being honored in between the sophomore and varsity match against Hinsdale South, Murphy posed for photos, not only with the JCA sophomore and varsity team, but the opponent as well.

That was before a line formed in the hallway from young players looking for selfies and autographs.

“It is really weird for me to come in sometimes and have people be so excited, but it’s also a good thing,” she said. “I love being able to come in and see everybody so happy for volleyball and to bring some excitement for these girls.

When I decided to come to JCA, I loved the volleyball program and wanted to be a part of it. So, for me to be able to leave a positive legacy on the JCA volleyball program is everything I could have wanted.”

That legacy began when Murphy was selected to compete in Rio De Janerio, Brazil for the United States National team and was cemented when she earned the bronze with a 25-23, 25-27, 25-22, 25-19 four set-win over the Netherlands. Murphy posted five kills in the medal match and 66 total for the Olympics, including 13 in the opener against Puerto Rico.

“We wanted to leave with a medal and leave knowing we played how we wanted to,” Murphy said. “It was all about pride at that point. It could have been easy for us to say we didn’t want to play that match, but at the end of the day, we got to play another match together and that is what we kept reminding ourselves.”

Winning the bronze was not the goal for the Americans, as their sights were set on gold, but a 25-20, 17-25, 21-25, 25-16, 1315 loss to Serbia thwarted those hopes. Murphy said it was not easy to rebound, but the US did just that to earn a medal.

“I am proud of how we fought for every single point in every single match. We were in a really tough pool and that prepared us well,” Murphy said. “We weren’t good enough in the semifinals – Serbia was better – but I still think we fought. To rebound from that to win the bronze was

one of the hardest things we ever had to do, but I am proud of us for rebounding so quickly and we were able to play a really good match.”

No matter the medal, Murphy said her experience in Brazil was one she will never forget.

“It was definitely life changing.

When you start playing a sport, you dream about going to the Olympics and even though I have been there it doesn’t feel real yet,” Murphy said. “I had an amazing experience. I think Rio and USA volleyball did a really good job making everything as smooth as possible for us. It was the experience of a lifetime. No matter what bad things people were saying going down there, once I got there, it was just awesome. The fans were really great, they love volleyball down there and that was really cool to play in front of such a volleyball friendly atmosphere.”

Not only was she playing in front of fans in Rio, Murphy and the Americans were playing with the eyes of the country and the world on her – something she tried not to think about on the court.

“That was one of those things you try and think about and then not think about while you were playing,” she said. “It was easy for us, I think to get into a normal volleyball game because this team has worked really hard for four years to get in a routine and treat every match like it is a big, gold medal match. If there was ever a moment where I was nervous and thought, ‘there are so many people watching,’ I could just look at my teammates and know we play together every day and know if we just did what we do, we would be alright.”

Now that the Olympics are over, Murphy is off to her next adventure.

“I am playing professionally in China this season, so I will live there and play for a few months.

I am going to hopefully continue with the National Team and see where that goes,” she said. “It is hard to plan too far ahead because you never know what will happen, but for right now, I want to continue to play as long as possible. I hope there is another Olympics.”

Slammers to host 2017 Frontier League All-Star game The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy announced Friday they will host the 2017 Frontier League All-Star game July 12 at Silver Cross Field. The announcement comes just days after the Slammers earned the title of Frontier League East Division Champions.

“We are extremely excited to have been selected to host the 2017 Frontier League All-Star Game,” said Joliet Slammers President and CEO Nick Semaca. “It is a great tribute to our fans, the City of Joliet, and all of Will County and we are looking for a great week of celebration for the game next July”.

Monday, July 10 will mark the beginning of the All-Star festivities with a welcome reception for Frontier League All-Stars and staff that evening.

The Bill Lee Golf Outing will be held Tuesday, July 11 for staff and players, followed by the Home Run Derby set for 7 p.m.

The All-Star Game will take place on Wednesday, July 12 at 7 p.m. following a luncheon where Frontier League Hall of Fame inductees will be announced. A special guest speaker will be announced in the coming months. The luncheon is open to players, staff and the public.

Individual tickets for both the Home Run Derby and All-Star game will go on sale at a later date. Group pricing is available and little league teams will have the opportunity to shag balls during the Home Run Derby if purchasing group tickets for that day.

It will be the first time since 2004 that Joliet has hosted an All-Star game. It is likely to be the only event of its kind for several more years.

Private school is busting savings You’ll find great or bad things in any school, private or public, Christian or not Dear Dave, Our three kids are enrolled in a private Christian school. It’s a great place, and we truly believe our kids are getting a wonderful, faith-based education, but the tuition is pretty expensive. We’ve already had to start digging into our savings to make this happen, and the kids are only in elementary school. Should we keep them enrolled, or should we transfer them to public school?

Maureen Dear Maureen, I understand wanting your kids to get the best education possible.

Private schools can provide some advantages academically, while a good Christian school might offer spiritual advantages. But, the bottom line is this: if you can’t cash flow it, you shouldn’t do it.

All of my kids went to public schools, and they are good, moral people and strong Christians. In the process, they learned how to interact with people of all faiths, no faith, and how to display their faith and beliefs adequately in their personal lives and in the marketplace.

The truth is, you’ll find great things and bad things in any school, private or public, Christian or not. And no matter where your kids go to school, as parents, you still have to teach them about the world – the good and the bad, the right and the wrong. Life can’t be lived inside a protective bubble.

People who use these types of plans have a portion of their compensation withheld and directed into an investment of some kind instead, and you aren’t taxed on it immediately. It’s sort of like a pre-tax investment, but it’s not transferrable to an IRA or 401(k).

I would only do deferred compensation after I’ve done everything else in terms of saving 15 percent of my income for retirement, including a Roth IRA. These are funded by after-tax dollars, but they grow tax-free.

But I wouldn’t do any of this until after I had paid off all my debt, except for my home, and had an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place.

Gallery Seven to present ‘Leave Space’ exhibit Gallery to feature work through September Joliet’s Gallery Seven is displaying the work of artist Tammy Kordik throughout the month of September.

Kordik creates mixed-media leaf paintings that explore the threedimensional space surrounding the canvas.

“By creating 3-dimensional leaves on a 2-dimensional surface, I invite the viewer into the space surrounding the canvas,” Kordik said.

The painted leaves of the exhibit “Leave Space” are created from a variety of materials, including fabric, paper and metal screening attached to the canvas. Kordik received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Northern Illinois University and teaches art in New Lenox School District 122. She has
