Chicagoland motorcycle run brings autism awareness to Shorewood, southwest suburbs

Courtney Choate said it was amazing to cruise in support of people with autism.

“I love seeing the people pop out of their houses to see what’s going on,” the Marengo resident said. “It’s pretty cool.”

Choate was one of more than 900 motorcycle riders who took part in the Ride for Autism Speaks Chicago Sunday. She has a brother who was diagnosed with autism and said riding in the motorcycle run is special to her.

“The main thing is to make people aware of [autism],” she said. “We are supporting him, but we’re also bringing awareness to it.”

Keith McCormick, executive director for the Chicago chapter of Ride for Autism Speaks, said it’s nice seeing how the event has grown in popularity over the years.

“In the past 14 years, it’s grown from a few hundred [riders] to almost a few thousand,” he said.

and McCormick said the group is looking to “blow that goal out of the water” this time around.

Alison Hargadine, of Romeoville, said she enjoyed taking part in the motorcycle run. This year was her second time riding in support of the Ride for Autism Speaks Chicago organization.

“I enjoyed the camaraderie,” she said. “I enjoyed the ability to meet other people and see other types of bikes… we’re all coming together for one purpose, even though we’re all different types of people.”

Although Ride for Autism Speaks organizations are located

throughout the country, there are still people who aren’t aware of what the organization does. The hope, according to McCormick is that the annual motorcycle will change that fact.

“We’re just trying to make a difference to people who are impacted by autism,” he added.

“We want people to feel like they’re part of a larger community.”

This year is the Chicagobased chapter’s 14th year raising funds and awareness for autism.

McCormick said bringing the event to the suburbs has had a huge impact on the event’s success.

“It’s really important for us to

be in the south and southwest suburbs,” he said. “Seeing 2,000 motorcycles go down the road, everybody’s going to stop and go, ‘whoa, what is that?’ It’s loud and it’s a great group, and they’re so welcoming.

“It’s just a great opportunity for us to get out there and spread our message.”

Autism Speaks Chicago is a nonprofit organization that conducts research and engages in advocacy and growing awareness.

Shorewood makes candidate election petitions available

Township to host ‘financial recovery’ event

The village of Shorewood made petitions and election materials available to individuals seeking elected office in the April 4 consolidated election.

Election materials were made available beginning Sept. 20 at village hall, 1 Towne Center Blvd., and can be picked up Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

There are five positions up for election, including village president, three members of the board of trustees and village clerk. Each of the positions has a four-year term. Filing dates for petitions are Dec. 12 to 19 during normal business hours. The Shorewood village clerk’s office will remain open until 5 p.m. Dec. 19 to accept petitions for candidacy. Troy Township announced last week that it will host a presentation by First Midwest Bank Oct. 18 on financial recovery.

The spirit of the Joliet Central High School Steelmen was on full display during the annual homecoming parade Sept. 17.

Misty Uher, a sponsor for Central’s student council, said the parade does a good job of kicking off homecoming weekend. “[It’s] just getting the kids excited for the football game,” she said of this year’s matchup against Plainfield Central. “They’re really pumped up about that, as well as the dance. It’s just a good way to start the school year.”

From the school board to the cheerleading squad; the soccer team to the marching band, more than 15 different groups from campus organizations took part in this year’s parade.

Ninth-grade student Edward Lopez was marching in the parade with his soccer teammates. He said he never imagined the way the parade would draw crowds to the downtown.

“I thought it was going to be way smaller, but it’s a lot bigger,” Lopez said.

The Joliet Central freshman added that he loves the way people have decided to demonstrate their school spirit during the event.

“It’s actually pretty competitive,” Lopez said. “Some people want to show more spirit and more face

paint and all that.”

Junior Courtnee Hampton said seeing the reaction of kids in the crowds is nice.

“The kids love when we throw candy,” she said.“They’re eventually going to be coming here, and to see the school spirit… they’re going to be really anticipating coming to Central.”

Hampton said the football game is one of her favorite homecoming week activities.

“Win or lose, we have fun all the time,” she said. “The team has fun, the people have fun; even the opposing team has fun.”

As an upperclassman in her final year at Joliet Central, senior Brenna Rande said homecoming week has special meaning.

“It’s the last big event, the last time we’ll have homecoming spirit week, the last time we’ll be in the homecoming parade,” she said “It’s kind of a big deal.”

Rande said the hype surrounding the celebration rings true for a lot of students on campus. Pride in their school, combined with an important football game, add to homecoming week’s popularity, the Joliet Central 12th grader said.

“The spirit week makes it a little more fun and the dance kind of finishes it all off,” Rande added.

Joliet Central Band Director Don Stinson said he thinks the enthusiasm displayed by the community during homecoming week is deeply rooted in the school’s history. That enthusiasm,

according to Stinson, also plays a major part in how well the celebration is year after year.

“I think Joliet has such a good tradition out here with its very old and very great schools and band programs and activities,” he said. “I think that’s special to the community.”

Melissa Northington, of Joliet, was one of many spectators waving to paraders as they took to the streets of downtown Joliet. She said she couldn’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday.

“I enjoy it every year because my daughter cheers for the junior varsity team,” she said.

Another reason homecoming weekend is popular for many people, according to Northington, there are bragging rights at stake.

“They try to see who’s going to win the game,” she said. “I mean it’s not really all about winning, but they come out for that.

Brian Bueschel, of Joliet, said he was excited to see his daughter walking in the parade with fellow classmates representing the ROTC program. “[You’re] always proud to see your kids out doing social functions and what not at school,” he said.

This year was Bueschel’s second time attending the parade. For him, the school’s commitment to current and former students is a big reason why the community shows so much support during the parade.

“A lot of the people from the community went to the school,” he said. “I think it brings the community out; it’s a big event for the city.”

City council member Jim McFarland notified the city Sept.

9 that he’s stepping down from his post on the Joliet City Council at the end of the month.

The first-term councilman said the decision is tied to his plans to

move out of the city, noting that he and his wife work outside of Joliet.

McFarland was first elected to serve on the city council in 2013.

In April, his at-large council position is up for election.

Initially, McFarland intended to serve out his whole term, but he said the situation didn’t pan out according to plan.

“It’s a tough one,” he said of his decision. “I was born in this city; my parents are from this city.”

Reflecting on his time as a city official, McFarland said he will always remember the time he

helped bring the city’s attention to a proposal that would have brought an immigration detention center to Joliet.

In 2013, McFarland was one of several community leaders who

spoke out against a controversial proposal by a Tennessee-based for-profit entity to build the detention center.

“The accomplishment I’m most proud of is publicly opening the light behind the immigration detention center that was planned for Joliet,” he said. “Other officials and staff were saying, ‘this is all talk.’ I was the driving force to help the city take action.”

Mayor Bob O’DeKirk said McFarland’s presence on the council will not be forgotten.

“I supported Jim,” he said.

“I thought he brought fresh perspective to the council… He’s made his decision and we need to move forward.”

O’DeKirk said the city will now work to find a replacement.

“I’ve had dozens of people approach,” he said. “Whoever I appoint needs to be approved by the council.”

O’DeKirk added that whoever is appointed to the council will have to pool together petitions quickly, in order to secure their candidacy for the position when it goes up for election early next year.

Special census begins Sept. 23 A special census will begin in parts of Joliet this week. The census will be limited to neighborhoods that experienced new housing construction during the past six years. According to the city, most residents will not be affected by the census, which is set to begin Sept.

City notifies residents of political sign rules The city of Joliet is reminding residents of regulations that

that has occurred since the 2010 census. Joliet will receive additional state revenues based upon the number of new residents identified in the census.

Obtaining an accurate count of community growth is extremely important, according to the city. This statewide revenue sharing helps fund police, fire and public services.

Current projections indicate that Joliet added 1,460 new residents, which would result in an additional $223,000 per year to fund municipal services.

Census enumerators will contact residents at their homes to conduct interviews.

All workers will have a U.S. Census Bureau badge to display their identity. The census enumerators will ask five questions pertaining to individuals living within each household. Individual household data are confidential and used for the purposes of determining total population statistics.

Joliet’s zoning ordinance regulates temporary political signs to control the size and location of these signs. State law prohibits municipalities from regulating when campaign signs can go up on residential properties.

Property owners are allowed to put up outdoor political campaign signs without any limitation on the time that the signs may be displayed.

Municipalities are still allowed to regulate the size, height and location of the signs.

Signs cannot be larger than 16 square feet in area, which includes the support structure, or more than 5 feet in height.

Signs must be placed on private property and not in the city’s right-of-way, which includes the parkway between the street and the sidewalk or in the median.

All signs placed illegally in

the right-of-way or on any other public property will be removed by the city and discarded immediately.

Political signs should, at no time, be placed any closer than 10 feet from the edge of the pavement.

In areas where sidewalks are present, signs need to be placed a minimum of two feet beyond the private property side of the edge of the sidewalk.

The use of trees or utility poles as sign supports or standards is prohibited.

Any signs posted in violation of these regulations will be deemed illegal and are subject to removal and possible fines.

One hundred years ago, almost no Americans brushed their teeth. We had radios, cars and telephones, but refused to own toothbrushes. They were readily available, as were various forms of toothpastes and powders for cleaning teeth. But, it wasn’t until a cue and a reward was discovered that brushing became a habit.

We like to think that we brush our teeth because it’s a healthy thing to do.

If asked, most people will say they brush because it’s an easy way to prevent cavities and maintain good oral health.

But wearing sunscreen is also a simple behavior to do, and applying it daily before going out would prevent a huge number of people from being diagnosed with skin cancer. Yet, only a tiny portion of the population puts on sunscreen every day.

Our habits – the actions we do without thinking – occur in a regular loop with three parts, all starting with the letters “r-e.” The first part is a reminder, which is some kind of cue or trigger that starts the process. Next is our reaction – the automatic way that we respond to the reminder. The final part is a reward, which serves to reinforce the whole process and create a craving to experience the loop all over again.

What the toothpaste company Pepsodent did in the 1920s was to find a reminder and a reward that would trigger people to crave brushing and make it part of their routine. By adding a foaming agent and mint oil to their

The reason your best ideas come to you when showering, driving or walking is that you aren’t thinking. Your brain’s cortex – the area responsible for rational thought, planning and decision making – can take a break.

toothpaste, they created a pleasing effect associated with brushing.

And, just as importantly, they developed an advertising campaign centered around reminding people to check for a film on their teeth, which was sneakily linked to having a dirty mouth.

It turns out that foaming, minty toothpaste does absolutely nothing to clean our teeth. And the film that forms is quite natural and harmless. Brushing is good for other reasons, but those were not well known at the time. Nevertheless, the reminder and the reward worked so well that within a generation, almost everyone in America was brushing regularly. Today, the behavior is so encoded in our own routines that we hardly give it any thought at all.

How did i get Here?

Have you ever found yourself driving home when you realized you couldn’t remember how you got there? It turns out this is an amazingly useful adaptation our brains have made.

Picture your brain by making a fist with your thumb sticking straight down, as if giving a thumbs-down sign.

The thumb is your brain stem; the meaty part at the base of your thumb is a primitive area that ensures we swallow and breathe; everything inside your fist that you can’t see is your limbic system, which contains our reward circuitry and basic drives; and your knuckles and back of your hand represent your cortex, the higher order human-making parts.

The reason your best ideas come to you when showering, driving or walking is that you aren’t thinking. Your brain’s cortex – the area responsible for rational thought, planning and decision making – can take a break. More primitive parts of your brain take over, freeing up the gray matter for other tasks. If basic functions required our full attention, most of our great ideas would never happen.

But, the same area that guides you home safely with minimal concentration also directs you to less beneficial destinations, such as eating fast food when you see a sign with a giant yellow “M.” Without thinking, and arguably without choosing, you pull your car into the drive thru, all the while anticipating the delicious salt and fat that will hit your tongue in just a few minutes. Your brain is completing the loop, reacting to a reminder so it can get a reward.

Handle witH care Habits are embedded, but they are also fragile. It only takes a slight change to a routine for them to be reshaped, as journalist Charles Duhigg described in his 2009 book “The Power of Habit.”

Joliet Central gets first win in 58 tries on last second touchdown

It was a playoff atmosphere Saturday in the game between Plainfield Central and Joliet Central.

Between the two teams, they had lost 89 straight games and knowing one of the teams would win brought out a large crowd for a Saturday afternoon game.

In what turned out to be a thrilling classic, Joliet Central put an end to its 57-game losing streak with a 38-35 win, sending the Wildcats to 33-straight losses.

“What a great game,” Joliet Central coach Brett Boyter said. “Plainfield Central keeps getting better every game. The toughest part about today was that someone had to lose. I hope Plainfield Central keeps with it because they are definitely going to get that W soon. They have a lot of tough and competitive kids.

Fortunately, today just went our way.”

“We came out ready to play,” Joliet Central wideout Jojo McNair said. “Last week we didn’t come out ready. But this week we were

The game turned into a battle of skill players between Joliet Central quarterback Zach Wisneski and McNair and Plainfield Central quarterback Marcus Hayes and running back Lovell Houston Jr. McNair caught eight passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns and added six carries for 91 yards and a touchdown.

“Jojo may be the best player this school has had,” Boyter said. “He made some great plays offensively, but how about some of those hits he was making on defense? We’re so fortunate he is on our team and his teammates help put him in position to be successful.”

Wisneski was 20-of-30 through the air for 280 yards and four touchdowns.

“You can start seeing that he is making really good decisions,” Boyter said of Wisneski. “After week one, things have slowed down for him the past couple weeks. He knows what he wants to do before the ball is snapped. He has been

Truex wins Chase opener at Chicagoland

Tires were both a plus and a minus for Martin Truex Jr. Sunday en route to winning the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, the first race in The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The win was his first victory in 11 Sprint Cup starts in Chicago and his third win of the season.

Truex had previously won only three times in his career.

“Without a doubt it’s the best team I’ve ever had, it’s the best position I’ve ever been in. I really feel like we have what it takes to win this championship,” Truex said.

“I felt like we had the same thing last year, but we didn’t have the racecars. We didn’t have the speed we have now. That’s really taken us to another level. There’s been years, a few years, where I should have won multiple races, but I’ve never been in a position where I feel like we can go anywhere and win. Right now I feel like any racetrack, any weekend, anywhere in the country we can win. It’s just so much fun to go to the racetrack

and have that feeling, have that much confidence in your team and what you’re doing. Having that much confidence in yourself as a driver is the ultimate goal.

“So it feels so good. I’m so proud of everyone and thankful.

We have two weeks now to just try to keep the momentum going. We have no pressure on us. Hopefully we’ll be able to get a couple more trophies and then get ready for round two.”

With the win, Truex secured his position in the second round of The Chase and now leads the point standings by one over Brad Keselowski.

“We did what we came here to do. That always feels good when you accomplish your goals,” Truex said. “We had a good weekend here with our Furniture Row Toyota.

[We] Worked really hard on our car throughout practice and on race runs. [We] Tried some new stuff this weekend and really felt like throughout the weekend we were getting the car feeling really good for race trim.

But [I am] really proud of our team for everybody sticking together, everybody keeping their heads down and never quitting till it was over. Today was obviously a big win for us. I am just excited for everybody. I mean, this is what we came here to do. It was cool to be able to put it out there and make it happen.”

Truex was trailing Chase Elliott by more than a second with five laps to go when Michael McDowell’s shredded right front tire forced the caution. The leaders pitted, leaving Truex fourth and Elliott fifth on the race’s final restart after Ryan Blaney, Kasey Kahne and Carl Edwards stayed out.

Truex made a three-wide pass to the outside going into turn one as the green came out and took the lead.

“Getting that fourth position on the outside I think was the key to winning,” Truex said. “Making the move to the outside was just what I was presented with. That was the only move I could make.

Fortunately we were able to make it work.

“I want to say I feel for Chase. I know what he’s going through. He did a great job. I wasn’t going to catch him. I was catching him, but I was not catching him enough to pass him in five more laps. He did a good job and they were really

fast today. We had to come from behind.”

Earlier in the race, Truex had spent time a lap down. He got his lap back on a free pass and made his way through the field and was in position for the win when opportunity struck.

“The mindset was, All right, this isn’t good, this is bad,” he said.

“I really wish this didn’t happen, but it did. How are we going to overcome it? That’s all you can do at that point in time is say, Okay, where are we at? Where is the leader? What do I need to do?

Cole kept me updated on who the leader was, who was a lap down, where I had to get to. Just kept my pushing, just kept my head down, kept digging. Eventually got back on the lead lap. Then the challenge was, How are we going to get up through traffic? It wasn’t easy to pass out there. But our car was really good on the long runs.

That’s where we were able to make time. It was trying to be patient on the short runs, on the restarts, try to keep my tires under me, and wait for those guys to start fading, then make my move. That’s what I did all day long and it worked out.”

Getting the win not only locks Truex into the second part of the Chase, it gives him a piece of mind for a few weeks.

“I think really all it means is that we’re guaranteed to make the second round, and the next two weeks we don’t have to worry about flat tires or somebody

running into us and wrecking us, getting caught by a caution when you’re pitting, things like that.

We don’t have to worry about the things that we can’t control,” he said. “That’s what gives you the most anxiety in these situations when you’re in the Chase and you have three-round eliminations. So we don’t have to deal with that for two weeks. All we have to focus on

is going to the racetrack and trying to continue to do a great job and win some more races. So that’s our goal right now.”

Along with a spot in the second part of the Chase, the win also earned Truex a cartoon-based trophy featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – one that he had plans for right away.

“I think I’m going to put that

trophy in my shop because we have like a little store set up in there at Martin Truex Jr. Motorsports.

We have a lot of family and kids come by. It will be cool to set it up in the opening and get their picture taken with it,” he said.

“That’s what I thought while I was standing out there and somebody asked me that. We’re going to do that for sure.”

It was the combination of Wisneski to McNair that scored the game-winning touchdown as McNair caught the tipped pass in the end zone for a 30-yard score with 29 seconds left.

“He is the best wide receiver in the state,” Wisneski said of McNair.

“I knew I could trust him and that he would catch it. This means everything. We had the best week of practice all year and we came out and did what we needed to do.”

The Steelmen having the ability to leave mistakes behind them and move forward in the game is something that helped earn the win.

“The biggest difference between this team and past teams is how they can put bad stuff behind them,” Boyter said. “We gave up a touchdown to give up the lead, but they stay in the moment and make the next play.”

It was all Steelmen early as Frank Fiegel caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Wisneski to open the scoring and after an interception from Marcus Stone, made it 14-0

on an 8-yard strike from Wisneski to McNair.

The Wildcats turned back to the ground game and got touchdown runs from Hayes and Houston to make it 14-13 midway through the second.

But Joliet Central responded with a 34-yard field goal from Antonio Alejos and a 43-yard touchdown pass with 16 seconds left to McNair for a 24-13 lead at the half.

A muffed punt from McNair led to a 17-yard Houston run midway through the third quarter.

The Wildcats returned the favor with a muffed punt and McNair made up for his mistake immediately with a 55-yard touchdown run to gain a 31-20 advantage.

“I had to get one back for the team,” McNair said. “I gave up one and I had to give it back. I told them it was my fault and was going to get

it back.”

Plainfield Central marched right back down the field and got a 1-yard run from Hayes and a two-point conversion from Houston to make it 31-28 after three.

The Wildcats took the lead in the fourth quarter when Hayes made a juke move, leading to a touchdown to give them their first lead at 38-35.

They had a chance to put the game away with 1:40 left, but missed on a fourth-and-six from the Joliet 37, setting up the final drive.

The Steelmen will go for two in a row Friday night at Plainfield South (2-2).

“We kept going and fighting hard,” Wisneski said. “Every time we made a mistake we bounced back strong and made some plays.”

“We have to make sure we come back to work Monday and put this game behind us,” Boyter said. “After

the weekend, it is on to Plainfield South. We can relive this for the rest of lives, but next week it is old news.”

JCA Joliet Catholic Academy is a program built on tradition – a tradition that has had very few rebuilding seasons in the last 40 years.

This season, however, is one of those seasons and with a 35-17 loss to Notre Dame of Niles, the Hilltoppers dropped to 0-4 on the season.

The last time JCA lost four games in a regular season was 1997-98 in coach Dan Sharp’s first season with the team.

“We are at the point right now that we are just working on getting better,” Sharp said. “We are going to fight like hell. We want to get these seniors a win. We have five opportunities to win some games for these guys.”

The last losing season for JCA was a 2-6 campaign in 1959-60 - the first season under Gordie Gillespie.

Sharp does realize, however, that as bad as the Hilltoppers want to see success this season – with a lot of young starters – this is a twoyear project.

“We are building a foundation with a lot of young kids that are getting some great experience,” he said. “The coaching staff has been coaching extremely hard, the kids are working, it is just that we are going through some growing pains at certain positions and we are just going to fight to get better every day, every practice, every rep. There is no classroom in football like being out there.”

Walsh proposes $570 million budget Proposed budget does not use of any of cash reserves to balance spending plan County Executive Larry Walsh presented his 2017 budget proposal to the Will County Board last week, saying the $570 million spending plan is balanced and includes a reduction in the 2016 levy rate.

During the board’s Sept. 15 meeting, Walsh said his proposal recommends including new property in this year’s budget in order to provide a “stable financial base to fund county operations.”

“As our economy remains slow, it is important we examine every

alternative to avoid raising property taxes for our residents,” Walsh said.

Will County’s corporate fund, which pays for general government operations, would be set at $197 million, according to the 2017 proposal. The remaining $373 million would be allocated to special funds, which are restricted for specific purposes.

Walsh’s office said the proposed budget does not use of any of the county cash reserves to balance the spending plan. Overall revenue is expected to remain relatively flat, with minor increases in sales tax collections.

Will County board members will review the draft budget. The new fiscal year begins Dec. 1.

Band students attend music summer camps Many students received financial support from Troy Band Boosters

Several band students in Troy 30-C schools participated in summer camps this year, including one who attended two camps.

Alexander MacGregor, a seventh grader at Troy Middle School, attended both the Eastern Illinois University Junior Band Camp and the Music for All Summer Symposium at Ball State University for tuba, making first chair in both camps.

Attending the Illinois Summer Youth Music Camp at the University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign campus were Kathryn Epling for trombone, Olivia Eldred and Desmond Walker for flute, Hannah Eldred for oboe, Emma Cartelli for French horn, Layne Barry and Amelia Dubs for clarinet, and J.T. Perella for saxophone.

Troy students who attended the Illinois State University Junior High Band Camp were Paola Lozada for clarinet, Claire Kranz and Analese Martinez for clarinet, Julianna Crompton for French horn, and Tyler Barnes

and Abigail Athern for cornet.

Jenna Smith attended Dr. Cate’s Flute Camp in Montgomery, Molly Huntington attended Music for All Summer Symposium at Ball State University for saxophone, Mitchell Lucas attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison Band Camp for bass clarinet, and Gabe Lozada attended the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corp Band Camp in Rockford.

Troy Band Director Jennifer Carlton said summer band camps are very beneficial for the students, and some even offer pre-college courses with teachers who are professors at the university.

“There is so much they can learn,” she said. “And, it’s always good to work with different conductors and directors and to be able to play with other kids who are as into band as they are.”

Most of the students received financial scholarships from the Troy Band Boosters to pay the camps’ costs, which Carlton said is a big help. The Boosters also pay for guest instructors to work with band students during the school year, help offset the costs of band trips, help maintain uniforms and occasionally donate instruments.

“The Band Boosters do so much to support our kids,” Carlton said.

Boosters President Nicki Lozada said the public can help the Troy band by contributing to its fundraisers, such as purchasing spiritwear and buying tickets for its annual spaghetti dinner, by visiting www.troybandboosters. org.
