In the first season under the new points system, Martin Truex Jr. took full advantage as he 0enters the playoffs as the top seed.

He tied all drivers with four wins, which hold a value of worth five playoffs points apiece, and he’s won a series-best 18 stages - worth one playoff point each.

He is also the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series 2017 Regular Season Champion. Winning the regular-season title adds an additional 15 playoff points.

Truex looked to have another win secured at Richmond Saturday night, but a caution with four laps remaining allowed Kyle Larson to grab his fourth win of the season and lock up second place in the playoff format.

“Our Auto-Owners Insurance Toyota was the class of the field by far,” Truex said. “(It is) very disappointing on the way the race ended for us. I’m not really happy about what happened. It spoiled a dominating performance again by our team. It’s just a shame we got

beat out of the pits. Our car was never good on restarts all night long so we were kind of a sitting duck out there.”

Despite the loss in the final race of the regular season, Truez is still happy to be ahead of Larson overall as he looks to be the first-ever Cup champion from Furniture Row Racing.

“Obviously I think it’s a good thing that we have (playoff points), and I think we could have used them last year with the way the playoffs worked out for us,” Truex said. “We need to focus on running as strong as we possibly can and keep the momentum going that we’ve had lately. Cars have been just lightning fast and teams have been doing a great job. We’ve got a few little things to work on, but all in all, I feel like we’re definitely one of the strongest teams. Hopefully we can just continue to perform at the level we’re capable of, and we don’t need those bonus points, but it’s going to be nice to have them, that’s for sure.”

It will be the same as in the old Chase format, where the bottom four drivers will be eliminated after three races until only four drivers remain at Homestead in Miami.

While a win still trumps all and locks you into the next round, the difference this season is Playoff points earned for race wins or for leading at the end of Stage 1 or

Stage 2 now will carry over roundby-round if a driver continues advancing. It’s not just for the first round any more. Additionally, drivers can build off and add to those bonus points.

So if a driver has 70 playoff points heading into the postseason, and then wins the playoff opener (fivepoint bonus), they would advance to the next round and carry 75 ad-

ditional points - or more, depending on the results over the next two races in the round.

This counts in every advancement except leading into Miami.

For the final race of the season, the top four drivers will have points set equally and the first driver of the four across the finish line will be the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

The Troy School District 30C Board of Education recently reviewed its tentative budget for fiscal year 2018.

The budget was put on display at the district office for members of the community to review.

Elaine Colombo, the district’s executive director of finance and operations, said a lot of planning and coordination between she and others goes into putting together a budget.

“I start in the spring meeting with department heads to see what projects they have in mind,” she said of the budget planning process. “We figure out what our revenue is, and we work through the process.”

For fiscal year 2018, the revenues and expenditures that make up the district’s total operating budget are $48,511,379 and $48,209,997, respectively.

Colombo said as far as she can recall, the district has a strong history of presenting a balance budget.

Salaries and benefits make up some of the largest expenditures in the district’s budget, as well as purchase services to obtain supplies.

The district typically aligns the annual budget to meet its strategic plan.

“Because we are a school dis-

trict, and that’s what we’re here for, we are here to support the classrooms,” Colombo said.

“We want to see the bulk of the money go toward instruction purposes.”

Colombo said the district maintains good footing as the school board looks to consider adopting its fiscal year 2018 budget. “[State] funding was up in the air, so I kept categorical payments flat with what we received last year,” she said. “With the state budget passed, it might change.”

The district has no outstanding payables to date.

Officials have bond payments they need to account for to pay for building projects completed in past years.

Colombo said issuing new debt is an idea “that’s not been decided yet.”

The district has $150,000 budgeted for in its contingency to date.

“It’s spread out just to account for unexpected expenditures,” Colombo said.

The Troy School District 30C Board of Education invites the community to provide feedback on its fiscal year 2018 budget during a Sept. 20 public hearing at 6:50 p.m.

Officials will hold their next regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Don Bacon Administration Center in Plainfield.

Scoot organizers hope to grow race interest The Shorewood Scoot 5K returns after a two-year absence

Organizers behind the Shorewood Scoot 5K hope the race once again becomes an annual draw for area runners.

The Sept. 9 event marked the first run put on in two years by its new presenting sponsors, the Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce and Athletico.

Matt Erwin, a physical therapist and facility manager for Athletico, said the main idea for holding the race is to bring it back to town.

“We’re hoping to get the word back out to let people know about it, so again it just can keep growing each year,” she said.

Staff members from Athletico were on hand to help runners in completing pre-race and post-race stretching.

Carol Wagner, president of Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce, said a handful of people dropped in the day of the race with interest in participating. This year 73 participants preregistered.

“I think we’ll probably get up to 100 [participants],” she said.

Shorewood’s Gina Lite said she did not know what to expect when she registered to compete in the race.

“I haven’t [ran a 5K] in quite a few years,” she said. “This is my first race in probably three or four years.”

Gina brought along her 14-yearold son, Dyllan, to cheer her on.

He said he is happy and excited to see his mother running in the Shorewood Scoot 5K. Gina said she runs regularly, so she was looking forward to participating.

“Me personally, [I hope] just to have fun,” she said. “I run for pleasure.”

Proceeds raised go to the Shorewood Area Chamber of Com-

merce’s education fund to support business development among members, as well as the Make Your Mark Foundation to benefit pediatric cancer research and provide assistance to families of loved ones diagnosed with cancer.

Sue Staehely, founder of Make Your Mark Foundation, was on hand to see the race make its return to Shorewood.

“We love it when people come out that don’t necessarily know Mark’s story,” she said. “Most everybody that lives in Shorewood knows about Mark.”

Sue’s son, Mark Staehely, was diagnosed at 12 with neuroblastoma, which is a form of childhood cancer that forms in the nerve tissue.

“During that course of his life, he did so many things for all the other kids up at the hospital,” she said. “[He] started a toy drive because he felt bad for the kids in the hospital.

He would go out and speak for the hospital about what it was like to be a teenager with cancer.”

Sue and her husband started the foundation after their son died at age 18. “[Mark] was very selfless,” Sue said. “When I say love, compassion and service to others, that was his motto.”

Over the years, the Make Your Mark Foundation has raised close to $1.5 million.

“It’s just basically carrying on what Mark wanted,” Sue said.

Josh Goodwin, of Oswego, was preparing to hit the racecourse this year.

“This is, I think, is my sixth or seventh [Shorewood Scoot 5K] race,” he said. “I’m glad to have it come back. I missed it for a couple years there. It’s a great cause.

Goodwin said racing in the Shorewood Scoot 5K brings great meaning to him.

“The Staehely family has been great,” he said. “I’ve known them

for—gosh, since I was a young kid.

We miss Mark, and it’s always a great reminder to come out and do this.”

Goodwin added, “It’s good to see as many people out today.”

Volunteers from the local Boy Scouts troop, Shorewood Area

Chamber of Commerce and the Minooka High School Honors Society provided support to help make the event possible.

Wagner said it is “great” to see the community’s support at this year’s race. Other highlights included the 100-meter dash for children to

enjoy. There, each participant took home a finisher ribbon.

“We want to make sure each year we get better and better,” Erwin said of the race. “We’re going to see how things go this year, and see where it takes us, but it would be great to keep it going.”

When Rob Miller searches for fish, he doesn’t bring a fishing pole.

Miller, District 8 fisheries biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), has more sophisticated equipment that he uses to see what kind of fish are swimming in a four-county area, including Will County and the lakes owned by the Forest Preserve District.

His boat is equipped with “droppers,” which are flexible metal cables, and alternating current (AC).

He uses the equipment for electrofishing to stun fish near his boat so they can be measured and weighed. It is one of several sampling techniques that can be used to evaluate a lake’s fish population, Miller explained.

Collecting fish assists in determining trends and helps to guide management decisions, he said.

The Forest Preserve works in cooperation with IDNR to make these management decisions, but deciding which fish will be stocked in Illinois waters is ultimately determined by the state.

Miller used the electrofishing technique September 8 at Lake Renwick in Plainfield to obtain fish samples to be sent to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for contaminant analysis.

In general, he collects fish species that are at the higher end of the food chain because they will be more likely to have ingested contaminants.

His samples include bottom feeders (catfish and bullheads), omnivorous fish (carp), and top predators (largemouth bass and walleye).

“From those tests, that is where your contaminant consumption advisories come from,” he said.

“We do these on a rotational basis every three to five years and we try

to hit all of the lakes.”

Whalon Lake is scheduled to be surveyed September 20-21. This will be a general survey where specimens collected via electrofishing will be measured and weighed and returned to the lake.

“From that we get a pretty good idea what we have out there,” Miller said. “And I can compare that to my management plan for that lake and see just exactly where that trend is going and if we need to tweak a harvest regulation or if we need to do supplemental stocking.”

There are other ways to obtain fish for analysis, including nets, but electrofishing is the main tool used by IDNR, Miller said.

“It gives you a pretty good idea as far as the fish population,” he said.

Science teacher receives grant for greenhouse Troy Middle School SciCap Exploratory teacher Dr. Barbara Will-Henn has received a $1,000 STEM grant from Window World of Joliet.

The grant was designed to be used to further the advancement of science, technology, engineering and math curricula during the 2017-2018 school year.

Will-Henn said she will use the grant dollars to purchase an 8’x12’ greenhouse that will be

erected on school property this fall. Use of the greenhouse will help teachers instruct TMS students and Garden Club members on botanical and environmental concepts in a hands-on manner.

Window World owner and CEO Brian Hopkins presented the grant to Will-Henn and Principal Renee Marski at Troy Middle School in Plainfield, one of the Troy Community School District 30-C schools.

Beware of flood-damaged cars caused by Hurricane Harvey Secretary of State’s office will screen title applications from areas impacted by the flooding Secretary of State Jesse White is warning consumers looking to purchase used vehicles to beware of flooddamaged cars resulting from flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. In an effort to protect Illinois consumers, White has instructed his office to closely monitor title applications involving potential flood vehicles from the hurricane.

The Secretary of State’s office will screen title applications from areas impacted by the flooding to determine if vehicles are registered in a flood county.

White is requiring the applicants for

those titles to submit a Hurricane Disclosure Statement to obtain a clean Illinois title. The statement must be signed by the registered owner of the vehicle and the insurance agent must verify that no flood claim was filed for the vehicle at the time of the hurricane. Any applicant unable or unwilling to supply the signed form will receive an Illinois Flood title only.

“We are taking every step possible to ensure that flood damaged vehicles from Hurricane Harvey do not receive clean titles in Illinois,” White said. “In addition to the extra scrutiny these vehicles receive from my office, we are providing a link on our website at www. cyberdriveillinois.com to the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s database of known hurricane damaged vehicles that consumers may check themselves.”

Media reports indicate that as many as 500,000 vehicles may be affected by

the hurricane’s floodwaters. This compares to 325,000 vehicles that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

White urged consumers to actively research as much as possible about a vehicle before making a purchase. Consumers may want to consult companies that provide additional information about the history of vehicles. In addition, it is always a good idea to have a mechanic inspect a vehicle before making a purchase.

“While my office will do everything it can to protect Illinoisans, it is always important that consumers also take active steps to protect themselves from purchasing damaged vehicles.”

White also said that Carfax is providing a link to check for flood vehicles.

Can Montessori be the road to independence and self-direction?

As we look upon this upcoming school year, we are hoping to send our children to school with the idea that we are well preparing them for their future. We want to give our children the tools to succeed in this new economy. But what is it that they need...

When I think of education for children I think of giving them the opportunities to expound upon their own natural creativity and introduce them to concepts that appeal to their abilities and interests. Mostly, we need to give children the opportunity to lead. We need to help them to understand that they have capacities and abilities that are completely unique to them. As adults we need to do our best to understand and remember with empathy what it was like to feel like a child. Certainly there was joy and laughter in simple things but there was also tremendous, uncertainty, insecurity, and not knowing exactly where it is that you really fit in.

While I was not fortunate enough to have this type of education opportunity until college, I was able to put my preschool son in this type of environment through Montessori. Montessori gives children exposure to this type of education and it was something that I chose to have my son participate in.

I know that Montessori education is not for everyone many times due to financial constraints and that there are other wonderful private school programs in Will County such as St. Mary Elementary and Joliet Catholic Academy.

However, a Montessori education, pre-K to 8th grade, provides some of the ways in which we can prepare our kids to figure out who they want to be and help them along their paths. As a first-time mom, I had given much thought to what kind of education and future I

was hoping for with my son. I had no doubt that I was interested in Montessori.

A couple of weeks ago I had a conversation with some of the moms from Montessori of Joliet. I wanted to find out how the three Montessori moms felt about the future education of their children as well.

I met with Bobbi, Vicky and Tawnie. Bobbi is herself an educator at the high school level for a local public high school. For Bobbi, the choice was not a difficult one. She had put her son, now 10, in a daycare conveniently located to her work until he was three but made a definite choice to put him in Montessori at that time.

“The trend in the schools these days are attempting now to do what Montessori has been doing for the last 150 years,” Bobbi said. “Montessori is tried and true.

All the things we are teaching now have already been done, this is just a more natural and differentiated style of learning.” “originally, we were looking for a good suburban school system where the taxes paid cover the cost of school,” said Vicki, an attorney with 3 children 7,10, and 12. But when it came time for her and her husband to check out preschools they were impressed with Montessori by observing the classrooms and seeing how much independence and creativity were stressed in the classroom. “The idea was emphasized to be a free thinker and to be different,” she said. Vicky also said that she went to a Montessori function and was very impressed by what one of the middle school students said. The young boy told her: “We not only think outside the box but we also build the box.”

Tawnie, an entrepreneur with a 7-year-old son in the program, said that her son began having trouble in kindergarten in a public school and that there was a suffocating structure: if a child couldn’t sit still for more than 5 minutes he was thought to be having social problems.

Social media posts are playing a part into the investigation of the triple homicide in the 2000 block of Great Falls Drive. Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton told WJOL they’re following up on several leads including social media posts that include pictures of various guns.

Another major praise for the program that Bobbi had and the women concurred was that the program focuses on child’s strengths and not their weaknesses which is good preparation for their future.

“It really doesn’t matter where he goes for future education because Montessori has prepared him well. The ultimate goal is to continue to learn and keep finding his passions,” said Bobbi.

The victims appeared to have been shot to death sometime overnight, Joliet police Chief Brian Benton said last week. The Will County Coroner’s Office identified the victims on Sept. 8 as Anthony M. McGee, 22, of West Chicago; Gabriella M. Rueda, 22, of West Chicago; and Emmanuel Hernandez-Arroyo, 22, of Plainfield.

“We don’t believe this was a random act,” Benton said, adding police are investigating the deaths as homicides.

All three suffered multiple gunshot wounds according to the coroner’s office. Final cause and manner of death is pending toxicology, police and autopsy reports.

Benton said police were called to the home for a death investigation around 3 p.m. Thursday. He said the caller told police about the bod-

ies in the home.

Benton said several people were at the home Wednesday night for a party. He could not say whether the victims lived in the home, were related or were partygoers. But all three victims were found inside the home in the same room and there were no signs of a break-in, Benton said.

Benton said many of the people at the party left by the early morning hours on Sept. 7.

Vicky and Tawnie concur, even for things that might not be their strengths the children have an expectation for success. They feel because their children have not been introduced to failure.

Joliet West is again unsuccessful in knocking off perennial conference powerhouse Oswego

In Friday night’s rematch, of one of last season’s most thrilling IHSA State Playoff games, Oswego again sent Joliet West back home with a bitter taste in their mouth, as the Panthers cruised to an easy 25-6 victory.

“That is a solid program and they always play us hard,” Oswego head coach Brian Cooney said. “We knew that they would come out hard, but our guys just stayed the course and gained the momentum in the second quarter.”

After a scoreless first period, which saw both teams squander opportunities to jump out ahead, it was Oswego who was able to strike first in the early stages of the second quarter.

On the back end of a time consuming, 93-yard drive, the Panthers used a 27-yard catch from junior wide receiver Jamal Fomby Jr. to set up the first

scoring play of the contest. Immediately following the huge gain fellow junior, running back Charles Coleman, gave the Panthers a 6-0 lead by way of a oneyard touchdown run.

As the Panther defense stood tall throughout the first half, Fomby was able to extend the Oswego lead to 12 just before the end of the second quarter, thanks to a catch and run of 67-yards. Fomby would connect again with Senior quarterback Levi Olson at the beginning of the third quarter, while Coleman would also score again to put the game out of reach at 25-0 as the game enter the final period of play.

Turtle invasion coming to Chicagoland Speedway Darrell “Bubba” Wallace will join the lineup for Nickelodeon’s upcoming Tales of the Turtles 400 race weekend at Chicagoland Speedway, driving the No. 98 Nickelodeon Slime Ford in the NASCAR XFINITY race for Biagi DenBeste Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM).

Wallace competed in the RPM No. 43 Ford in four Monster Energy Series races this year filling in for the injured Aric Almirola, where he tallied two Top-15 finishes. Wallace found Victory Lane this season in the Camping World Truck Series at Michigan International Speedway in his first Truck Series race since 2014, giving the Alabama native six wins in his Truck Series career.

A NASCAR XFINITY Series veteran, Wallace has 84 starts in the series and was on a roll of sixthplace finishes earlier this season in the No. 6 Ford.

“I’m really glad to get back behind the wheel of a race car,” said Wallace. “Chicago has always been a decent track for me where I’ve had some good finishes. I’m excited to get back in the XFINITY Series in a Ford Mustang.

With the history with Biagi DenBeste Racing and RPM, we should have some good speed.

Saints fall to No. 1 St. Francis, Indiana The St. Francis football team fell to 0-2 on the season after a 68-23 setback against No. 1 Saint Francis (Ind.).

A big second quarter separated the hosts. Saint Francis (Ind.) outscored the Saints (0-2) 34-6 in that frame. Nick Ferrer led the Cougars (2-0) offensively with 301 yards and five passing touchdowns.

Saint Francis (Ind.) started the game with an 11-play, 90-yard touchdown drive. The Saints answered with a solid march of their own and cut into the deficit with a Grayson Barnette (Lo-

noir, N.C./West Caldwell) 26yard field goal.

The Cougars scored the next two touchdowns, both passes by Ferrer.

The PAT attempt on the latter touchdown was blocked

by Malik Thurman (Bellwood, Ill./Proviso West). Jarrell Williams (Robbins, Ill./Richards) returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards to spark a 46-yard touchdown drive that culminated with a Don Butkus’ (Dyer, Ind./Mount Carmel) touchdown strike to Jean Pietrzak (Westmont, Ill./Westmont).

Saint Francis (Ind.) added some separation in the latter portions of the second quarter scoring four touchdowns, three from Ferrer and one blocked field goal that was returned for a score.

The Saints scored twice in the fourth quarter to round out their 23 points on the day. Arthur King ( Jacksonville, Fla./Forrest) returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown and then, in relief of Butkus, Aaron Ellis (Valparaiso, Ind./Boone Grove) hit Lexus Jackson (University Park, Ill./Crete-Monee) for a 49-

yard score.

The Saints used three different quarterbacks on the day with Ellis totaling a team-high 100 yards. Butkus, who battled through a first quarter injury, rounded out his day with 66 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) finished with 51 yards on one catch, while Ray Vallot (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) led the team with three receptions.

On defense, the Saints forced a pair of turnovers to bring their total to five on the season. King returned his interception to the

endzone and Tariq Thurman (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) pounced on a fumble.

Mason DeLong (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) recorded a game-high 11 tackles.

For Saint Francis (Ind.), three of Ferrer’s five touchdowns were to Rocky James.

Justin Green powered the Cougar ground game 120 rushing yards a pair of scores.

Piercen Harnish posted a teamhigh nine tackles.

The Saints look for their first win of 2017 when they travel to Siena Heights on September 23.

Saints split pair at invite The USF volleyball team took down Avila in four sets and then rounded out the Clarke Invite with a five-set loss to the hosts.

Brooklyn Withey (Lapeer, Mich./ Lapeer) was named to the AllTournament Team at the event.

USF started the day by bouncing back from a deficit to take down Avila 28-30, 25-16, 25-16, 25-14.

Avila led by as much as seven in the opening set, but the Saints slowly chipped away at the deficit. After trailing 16-9, USF clawed back even at 20-20. Both teams had set-point opportunities, but Avila finally capitalized to take the opening frame 30-28.

While the offense produced a fine performance against the Tigers, it was the defense that was ultra-impressive.

Valant (21), Nowicki (14) and Withey (10) all totaled double-digit kills. Baldwin finished with 43 assists and 16 digs, while Leah Alles (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) added a match-high 25 digs.

We kind of got away from our structure in weeks one and two, so we just put our prime emphasis on getting back to the fundamentals.”

With the recent history and budding rivalry between the Tigers and the Panthers, a win in a game like this can really do wonders for the team able to come out of the fight with their hand raised. For the second time in as many meetings, it was Oswego who enjoyed the thrill of victory. With the season still in the opening third of the year, the Panthers hope to use this emotional win as a catalyst for the final six games of the season.

“We put a lot of stress this week on rising up,” Cooney said.

“We really wanted to see how we were going to respond after a difficult loss against a good team, but a good team that we can compete with and beat. So the question was, how are we going to respond? Now we have to see after this week, how the kids prepare and respond for Plainfield East. We gave them the day off on Saturday, which they seemed to like, so hopefully they will come back with some juice and ready to compete.”

West (1-2) will look for bounce back and get their season on track next Saturday when it hosts Romeoville (0-3).

Should you give a child a pre-paid debit card?

Teach your children how to work, give, save and spend wisely DEAR DAVE, I’ve seen lots of companies marketing pre-paid debit cards for kids.

They seem to position them as a way parents can set spending limits for their children. Do you think these are a good idea? It seems to me they are just a form of conditioning to get kids to rely on cards.

KEITH DEAR KEITH, I agree with your assessment. I don’t recommend pre-paid debit cards for children, except in very unusual situations. Let’s say your kid was going on a trip, and you wanted him or her to have something in their pocket for limited access to cash. But if they’re old enough and responsible enough, I’d rather them have a traditional debit card attached to their own account.

What I really want parents to do is teach their children how to work, give, save and spend wisely.

It’s all about teaching your children to become good adults, and handling money is part of the equa-

tion.

How does that apply to something like a pre-paid debit card for a kid? For the child, they’re looking at it like mom and dad are an ATM. They don’t equate it with real money unless they put their cash into the card.

I suggest helping them open a checking account with a debit card attached around age 15 or 16, provided you have taught them – and they have demonstrated – wise money management practices up to that point. Teach them to reconcile and balance the account, and walk with them when they do this so they don’t slip into the idea a debit card is some magical portal to free money!

You make a lot of sense, but now I’m wondering if I need to talk to my fiancée about postponing the wedding until I pay off all my debt. How do you feel about this?

NICK DEAR NICK, First, congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I admire your desire to get out of debt and take control of your finances, but you’re talking about marrying the woman you love. You do not have to be debt-free to get married. If you guys are on the same page when it comes to money, and you’re both willing to work together on paying off any debt after you’re married, there’s no reason to postpone the wedding.

You two shouldn’t be paying each other’s debt before you get married, but once the rings are on your fingers, and you’re pronounced “as one,” then everything shifts from being “mine” and “hers” to “ours.”

walked away from the sport as Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards have all retired in the last two years.

However, the news that came in late April that the undisputed face of the sport was retiring sent ripple through the NASCAR world. And now, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will begin his final 10 races as a full time driver with his last race at Chicagoland Speedway – one of the 15 tracks he won on during his career.

Earnhardt, who will turn 43 in October, made his first career Cup Series start on May 30, 1999, at Charlotte Motor Speedway and will walk away after his 18th season.

He has been voted by fans as NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver a record 14 consecutive years and has racked up 26 points-paying Cup wins, including the 2004 and 2014 Daytona 500. His 26 victories tie him for 29th on NASCAR’s alltime race winners list. He also has 13 pole positions and eight nonpoints wins (five in the Daytona 500 qualifying Duel, two in The Clash and one All-Star Race and has qualified for the NASCAR playoffs eight times.

Earnhardt sat out most of the 2016 season after suffering a concussion and decided to leave the sport on his terms.

“The decision was really simple.

Sunday will be Dale Earnhardt’s final race at Chicagoland Speedway.

I just decided that I wanted to go out on my own terms. I wanted to honor my commitment to (team owner) Rick (Hendrick), to my sponsors, to my team and to the fans,” Earnhardt said. “I will admit that having influence over my exit only seemed meaningful when it seemed most unlikely. I had to miss some races last year and during that time, I had to face the realization that my driving career might be over without me so much as getting a vote at the table.

I know in life, we are not promised a vote and that is especially true in racing.

“During my rehab, I was given something else I wasn’t accustomed to and that was time. Time to understand what was important to me, time to realize the incredible support system I have in my wife, my team and my doctors and the time to work like hell to wrestle back to have some say so in this matter – so that became my motivation – to be able to announce my choice rather than some fate that was decided for me.”

So far this season, Earnhardt has remained healthy and has been

able to run every race, something he is glad he has been able to do.

“This season has been a blessing to me. It has been a gift to be at the race track and to run every lap.

I don’t ever remember myself being excited to be at the practice on Friday and Saturday,” he said. “Not 18 months ago, I was on Twitter complaining about 8:30 am practices and I can’t wait to get to them now. We used to complain about how long the season was, but this one can drag on.”

For the driver simply known as Junior, pressure was part of his career since the day he broke in the sport, sharing a name, occupation and fan expectation of his legendary father, however, he said he never put the pressure on himself.

“When my dad was doing so well and there were a couple of guys coming into the sport that were sons (of drivers), it was difficult for them to replicate their dad’s success and I just saw even at an early age that growing up in that shadow was going to be a real hard challenge,” Junior said.

“I wanted to race, but I knew racing would put me in that shadow.

I knew the odds of me having any talent at all and being able to do it were thin – they are for anyone – so at an early age all I wanted to do was make a living out of driving cars. I didn’t set goals or I didn’t dream of winning championships or Daytona 500s or working for one of the best owners in the business. I just wanted to be able to do it. So, I accomplished way more than I ever thought I would have accomplished. So, I am good on that front.”

Although Junior will retire from the No. 88 car for Hendrick Mortorsports, a seat that will be filled next year by Alex Bowman, he still has at least two Xfinity races he will race for JR Motorsports – a team he owns with Hendrick and his sister Kelly Earnhardt Miller – which began in 2005.

Junior will look to his ownership as an ability to stay competitive.

“My heart loves being in the car and I enjoy driving as much as I ever have. I do have an ambition to work. I don’t have to be the guy holding the trophy, but I enjoy being part of that,” he said. “I still want to be an influence and a part

of the success – however that is. I really enjoy making people happy and doing things as a team and I think I can replicate that in the next chapter in my life.”

That next chapter will also include being in front of the camera, as Junior has signed a contract with NBC, who broadcasts the second half of the Monster Energy Cup Series.

His role may not be limited to just NASCAR, however, as he has other interests – including being a huge Washington Redskins fan – that NCB executives said could play into him being a cross over personality.

For now, Junior is focused on the sport he has competed in for nearly two decades.

“It is a thrill for me to be able to partner with CBS. Growing up in the sport, and having admiration for a lot of the folks that are in media today and that have came and went through the sport and had a hand in promoting it,” he said.

“I am very excited to take a step into that realm and learn what I can and try and help further the sport.”
