Will County celebrates 24th garden in the We WILL Grow School and Community Garden Program JOLIET – Another garden in the We WILL Grow School and Community Garden Program was dedicated on Saturday, July 27, at All Nations Church of God in Christ, 503 S. Water St. The garden is one of 24 community gardens in the Will County program.

“We are proud to partner with community organizations to start these gardens which provide fresh fruits and vegetables for our

residents,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh. “This children’s garden fulfills the vision of Deacon Bates to bring the incredible project to life.”

Deacon Carleton Bates and his wife, Tempie, wanted to build a children’s learning and sensory garden on the church site. The church has been a participant in the We WILL Grow program for three years and has provided fresh produce for local residents.

The children’s garden is named Eden’s Garden and was built to honor Bishop Robert S. Sanders who passed away on July 1.

The professionally designed garden will serve as an outdoor classroom space for the congregation and the neighborhood.

Residents are also able to obtain fresh fruits and vegetables grown at the church through the food pantry.

Tempie Bates explained how excited the children are to help with the garden and eat what is raised. At this year’s Bible camp, 72 children ate chard that was grown on the church grounds.

Will County has helped to fund community gardens in 11 locations to grow fresh food for residents and three learning gardens for school children and memory care patients.

The county has also funded 10 backyard gardens in the Senior WILL Grow program.

The We WILL Grow program has been successful bringing healthy, fresh produce to neighborhoods across Will County that do not have convenient access to traditional grocery stores.

Glasgow hosts ASPCA event

Animal cruelty seminar takes place for second year in a row

@RyanOstry_BR18 rostry@buglenewspapers.com Each year, there are an estimated 900 to 2,000 new cases of animal abuse with 250,000 animals falling victim.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow hosted the second Animal Cruelty Investigation Essentials Seminar presented by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to discuss more about this growing epidemic.

“All criminal laws are prosecuted by our office,” Glasgow said. “One segment of those is animal cruelty.”

In 2012, Glasgow started a program called ‘Paws 4 Kids’ that offers furry friendship and canine comfort to children who have suffered the trauma of sexual abuse.

Having four animals at the State Attorney’s Office and three dogs of his own, Glasgow said that the growing epidemic of animal abuse is something that highly resonates with him.

“It’s very close to my heart because I have three dogs at home and on my bad days they bring me so much joy,” Glasgow said.

With this being the second time the event was hosted, attendees learned about investigating animal cruelty cases including hoarding situations, puppy mills, dogfighting, identifying and collecting evidence, veterinary forensic evaluations, the link between

When deputies arrived on scene, they located Tamala R. Clayton, age 44, deceased inside of the residence.

Witnesses to the incident advised detectives that sometime shortly after 5:00 AM, someone began pounding on the front door of the residence.

Witnesses stated that Tamala Clayton opened the front door of the residence, and unknown person(s) immediately fired numerous rounds in her direction. Tamala Clayton was shot multiple times as she opened the front door of the residence.

“In a county as large as ours, we wanted to open up the seminar which was very successful last year to people who weren’t able to attend the event,” Glasgow said. “One of the most pressing and serious issues is we need to increase the sensitivity to the victims in these cases and also enhance the training the animal control officers and police offers have in this field.”

The ASPCA, who presented the seminar, is the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world.

ASPCA organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law.

Headquartered in New York City, the ASPCA maintains a strong local presence, and with programs that extend the anti-cruelty mission across the country, they are recognized as a national animal welfare organization that is a privately funded not-for-profit corporation, and are proud to boast more than two million supporters across the country.

To coincide with the work that ASPCA does, July 29 marked the 20th anniversary of Illinois’ first-ever animal torture statute, which was written by State’s Attorney Glasgow.

OUTLAWS ‘Street Outlaws’ coming to Joliet’s Route 66 Raceway this weekend

On August 9-10, the No. 1 rated cable television show “Street Outlaws” is coming to shoot their reality television show at Route 66 Raceway.

With 13 seasons to date, with the first show airing June 10, 2013, “Street Outlaws” has taken the country by storm.

An American reality television series about street racing, it provides an inside look into the action both on the road and behind the scenes.

In Oklahoma City, racers proclaim having the fastest streetcars in the entire country, and the racing, drivers say, comes first before family friends and work.

Some of the cast includes: Big Chief, Ryan Martin, Daddy Dave, Jeff Lutz, Murder Nova, Doc, Monza, Chuck, Dominator and Shane, and for one in particular, the op-

“Route 66 is one of the world class facilities,” Lutz said. “As a driver of a drag car I absolutely want to go because of the facility, the people and it’s always been a dream of mine.”

Lutz drives a 1957 Chevy Race Car that he has been racing for three years, and he said that there

is a reason why the show is the top-ranked show on television.

“I firmly believe it is the No.1 ranked television show right now because of the cars and how relatable they are,” Lutz said. “A lot of these cars you even see on the road today, so it relates more to the people who watch and love our show.”

Getting the opportunity to meet

your favorite driver, get autographs as well as every pass being a pit pass, getting t-shirts and other apparel are all reasons Lutz said families and fans should come out Friday and Saturday.

On Friday at 1 p.m., gates and pits open early for Mega Fan/I want it all VIP ticket holders.

At 2 p.m., gates open for all ticket holders, and at 5p.m., racing starts.

Saturday, at 8:30 a.m., gates will open early again for Mega Fan/I want it all VIP tickets holders.

Followed by that, at 9:30 a.m. the gates will open for all ticket holders, and at 12 p.m., racing starts.

“This is going to be an insane show that all fans and even people who haven’t seen us before are going to want to see,” Lutz said. “We can’t wait.”
