Inaugural race aims to support the organization’s programming and services

Runners took to the streets of Joliet Saturday as part the MorningStar Mission: Possible 5K Run/Walk.

The inaugural race aims to support the organization’s programming and services.

Executive Director for MorningStar Mission Marilyn Farmer said it’s nice to see community support shown for the organization.

“We’re here providing food, clothing, and shelter for everyone that comes through our doors and the Gospel of Jesus Christ for all,” she said, noting how important it is to reach people who need support.

For a number of years, MorningStar Mission held walks as a fundraising initiative.

Farmer said the idea behind the race evolved from input gathered from volunteers and discussions held at the committee level.

Marcus Bingham, of Clarion, Pennsylvania, said he was in town visiting his dad, Dennis, when they decided to do a run in the MorningStar Mission: Possible 5K Run/Walk.

“We’ve run a few other races together,” he said. “It seems like something we can do together.”

Marcus added that he’s not nearly the runner that his dad is, but he hopes to have a nice run.

“I haven’t talked him into running a marathon yet,” Dennis said laughing.

Dennis added that running in the MorningStar Mission 5K is part of his training regime.

“Having a 5K in there once in a while is good training,” he said, noting how he is on schedule to run in his third marathon.

Dennis said it’s nice seeing the way the race brings the community together.

“Particularly, with groups like this that do 5Ks you get a good mix of people coming and it’s a good time,” he said.

Marcus said it’s important to support organizations such as MorningStar Mission.

“Even in its very nature, the mission of what they’re doing is to provide help for those that need it,” he said. “But, even looking at who they are that’s only a means to an end, because the real end is teaching them about Christ.”

Darcy Welsh, of Channahon, said she heard about the event through a flyer and decided to participate.

“It looked like it was for a good cause,” she said. “I’ve always had a special place for homelessness because it can happen to anybody.”

Welsh noted that she’s been preparing to run 5Ks over the last year, and said her first race took place in October 2015.

“I’ve lost 60 pounds doing this,” she said.“I enjoy it.”

“I love the competitiveness,” she said. “There is a physical exertion that gives you a high. You can’t describe it if you haven’t done it.

It’s a sense of accomplishment.”

Farmer said MorningStar Mission set an attendance goal for the race, with the hope of bringing in 100-plus participants.

“We surpassed that,” she said.

All proceeds will benefit MorningStar Mission in providing

services for the women and family center, the emergency shelter and the men’s recovery program.

County reports finding fourth rabid bat Four rabid bats have been reported throughout Will County in 2016 Will County health officials said a fourth rabid bat has been reported at a residence in Custer Park.

The bat was found alive July 27 near an outdoor pond at the Custer

Park home. There was no human exposure. According to the health department, the resident noticed the bat lying on the ground near the pond and used a rake to push the bat into a bucket. A family of

West Nile-positive mosquitoes found in 3 Will County towns

Positive samples found in Bolingbrook, Naperville and Shorewood Mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile Virus have been found in a trio of Will County communities.

The Will County Health Department’s Environmental Health program has 14 mosquito monitoring sites throughout the county.

Positive samples were found in Bolingbrook June 30, July 12 and July 22; Naperville on July 5 and July 19; and Shorewood on July 8.

West Nile Virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Birds pass the virus to mosquitoes through a blood meal.

Most people infected with WNV exhibit no clinical symptoms, but approximately 20 percent of cases result in mild or serious illness.

Preliminary symptoms typically include fever, headaches or body aches. More serious illnesses can result in meningitis, encephalitis or death.

No cases have been found in humans or animals in Will County in 2016.

The county collected 87 WNV-

positive batches in 2015, 62 of them from Environmental Health traps.

Will was one of 64 Illinois counties to report some sort of WNV activity last year.

Statewide, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported 1,713 mosquito batch positives in summer 2015. The state also reported 51 viruspositive birds, 77 human cases and nine fatalities.

The health department recommends that people spending time outdoors take precautions against mosquito bites. Long sleeves, pants, shoes and socks are strongly recommended. Insect repellent is also advised. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

The health department also collects a small number of birds for testing by the state. To report dead birds, telephone 815-740-7631 any time.

The Will County Health Department and Animal Control were notified and retrieved the bat for rabies testing. The bat tested positive for rabies July 28.

Animal Control is working with the family to determine if any of the dogs were exposed to rabies.

Only one of the dogs is current on

its rabies vaccinations.

Health officials reminded Will County residents to follow certain guidelines to protect themselves and their families from rabies, including not feeding, touching, or adopting wild animals or stray dogs and cats.

Residents should also vaccinate pets in order to serve as a buffer between rabid wildlife and

humans. Be sure dogs and cats are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations, and consult with your veterinarian about when pets need to be vaccinated.

Additionally, pets should not be allowed to roam free, and residents are discouraged from attracting wild animals to their homes or

Crossroads Fest brings back bags for 2016 tournament Tournament to be held at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 6 Submitted by Marianne Eisenbrandt The popularity of bean bags has prompted the Shorewood Crossroads Festival to again have a “Bags Tournament” during the festival.

The tournament will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 6 in the entertainment/beer tent, at Cene’s Four Seasons Park.

Registration is at noon after which time no additional teams will be allowed entry into the tournament. Entry fee is $30 per team and can be paid when registering at the event.

two people. The tournament is a double elimination bracket, with all teams being guaranteed two matches. Each match will consist of best out of three in head to

head competition.

The tournament is designed for amateur players only. ACO professional players or ACO top 40 ranked singles or doubles players

Those that are unsure of their status will be assisted in verifying their status from documentation provided by the ACO. The tournament is sponsored

by Jim Delaney Allstate Insurance Agency.

Weber Road plan safer, less congested becomes law Weber Road is the highest traveled roadway in Will County Highway System Legislation that will help make Weber Road safer and reduce traffic around Interstate 55 was recently signed into law.

State Sen. Jennifer BertinoTarrant, D-Shorewood, sponsored the initiative, which

will allow Will County to acquire land needed for reconstruction of the I-55 interchange and Weber Road corridor. Without it, Bertino-Tarrant says the project could have been delayed for years.

“By giving Will County the green light to move forward with construction, we will improve traffic congestion and address safety concerns at the I-55/Weber Road interchange,” BertinoTarrant said. “Local governments, as well as the Illinois Department of Transportation, are working together to do what’s best for motorists.”

Weber Road, which intersects

I-55, is the highest traveled roadway in the Will County Highway System. Currently, the stretch of road averages 39,200 vehicles daily, and that number is projected to increase to 63,000 by 2040. This particular stretch of Weber Road also has the county’s highest accident rate, according to Bertino-Tarrant.

The final product is expected to create a diverging diamond

interchange that will improve safety and traffic efficiency, as well as create 400 jobs.

“Not only is [the] news good for local drivers, but it’s good for our economy,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “This project will create hundreds of much-needed construction jobs right here in Will County.”

House Bill 1191 is effective immediately.

County Board hosts property tax assessment forum Forum will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Homer Township Old Town Hall in Lockport Will County Board members Steve Balich and Mike Fricilone have scheduled a property tax assessment forum Aug. 9.

The forum will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Homer Township Old

Town Hall, 16057 S. Cedar Road in Lockport.

The county’s supervisor of assessments, Rhonda Novak, will be on hand to discuss the assessment process, tax bill

calculations, property exemptions and assessment appeals.

“We want to do everything possible to help residents understand the property tax assessment process and make them aware of their rights to file for an appeal,” Balich said. “Too often, I hear from citizens that are confused and frustrated when they receive their annual assessment

notice, and they don’t understand the options available to them.

We invite anyone interested in learning more to join us on Aug. 9.”

The supervisor of assessments typically publishes annual assessment notices at the beginning of August, and residents have a month to file an appeal.

“We hope residents take

advantage of this opportunity to meet with us and the Supervisor of Assessments prior to the deadline for filing an appeal,” said Fricilone.

“This forum should help anyone attending understand the process and decide if an appeal is in their best interests. We look forward to addressing any concerns and answering everyone’s questions.”

dear shorewood residents, I said I would keep you abreast of our Lake Michigan Water situation. Sorry, there is nothing new to report to you.

We are still in lengthy negotiations with ComEd, attempting to negotiate for the use of the power line right-ofway for our pipeline from up north. As soon as we have any headway in these negotiations, I will let you know.

On a lighter note, our summer

programs have kicked off very nicely.

We have had great attendance for the Party in the Park programs at the village hall band shell on Thursday nights.

The fishing derby was a success along with the kite flying day at the park. The fourth annual cardboard boat regatta was a great day where we had 21 boat entries. Everyone had a wonderful time, many got wet!

Shorewood Fest starts Aug. 5, with an early party for families with special needs to enable children to enjoy the rides and amusements. Be sure to check the Shorewood Chamber of Commerce website for specific times.

There’s still plenty of summer weather left and many events to come in our community. Be sure you check the Shorewood website for events, times

and places.

Last night, the village board unanimously approved a change in closing times for all bar establishments in Shorewood. As of Jan. 1, 2017, all bars in Shorewood must be closed by 2 a.m. The previous ordinance allowed them to remain open until 3 a.m. on the weekends. As the establishments have grown their businesses, the surrounding residential areas have felt a greater impact, hence it was deemed necessary by the board to make some changes. If these changes do not bring about substantial improvements we may find it necessary to implement additional actions.

On the northeast side of Joliet near Lockport is one of the most economically depressed neighborhoods in the entire city. Cruising down Woodruff Road the potential can be seen but fear and uncertainty deter investment given the history of the neighborhood. Yes, the Forest Park neighborhood has seen its share of shootings and violence but the time has come to rebuild for a better tomorrow.

One of the challenges of the Forest Park neighborhood is accessibility.

When traveling on Collins Street and you make the turn onto Woodruff Road when approaching the railroad tracks the street is rerouted into Hacker Avenue. This eliminates the easy access off of a main street and does not help the community.

The alternative entrance in Lockport to the neighborhood via Louise Ray Parkway has great potential for a community desperate for investment.

Along Louise Ray Parkway a combination of a family friendly park, a pharmacy, and retail shopping would make a great addition. When traveling on Woodruff east of Draper there is some fair size empty land that would make a great place for a gas station and a small affordable healthcare facility.

Woodruff Road can be extended to reach Briggs and there should be access to the Liberty Meadow Estates.

Another access point to the Liberty Meadow Estates can be off of Hague.

This will make it tremendously easier to get around and for Pace to reach its riders better. Rosalind Street needs to be repaved and widened off of Briggs as well for safer travel.

Safety is a big concern and should be addressed seriously. Residents are scared to take their children and play at the small park off of Woodruff Road/ Dora Avenue. A police light should be installed on the corner maintaining

surveillance and an increased law enforcement presence to deter loitering outside the store on Arthur Avenue. Parents and children should not be afraid to visit their local parks.

It’s a priority to keep everyone safe in the neighborhood.

The Forest Park neighborhood has great potential and its residents deserve the opportunity to spend their hard earned money locally instead of traveling to Lockport, New Lenox or elsewhere in Joliet. Recently the 12-acre Forest Park located at Cutter/Rosalind was the site of a grand reopening celebrating its recent renovations of improved playground, baseball field, basketball court, walking trail, and pavilion.

North Course at Eagle Ridge another top stop in Galena

The second course we played at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa was the North Course. Built in 1977, the course has more of a country club feel to it without all the amenities that The General had. However, it was still a fun course to play and offered up some great views.

The opening hole is a 347yard hole from the gold tees (2nd longest tees at 6,402 yards).

It is a dogleg right that can plan much shorter than its distance.

Next is a tight and curvy par5 at 501 yards. It is a dogleg left off the tee but also has a dogleg right on your approach shot to the green, making accuracy vital on this hole. No. 3 is the hardest hole on the course, a straight away par-4 at 416 yards. It plays long and tight.

No. 4 is 182 yards and is guarded by bunkers on both

sides and plays a bit downhill.

The fifth hole is a 482-yard par5 that doglegs right off the tee and is has a very tight fairway near the green. The sixth hole is a dogleg left that has a more forgiving landing area than many other holes.

The seventh is a gem of a hole with a lake off in the distance in the background. It is 357 yards and is a dogleg left with the fairway sloping right. A long drive through the fairway is as good as gone into the trees. The eighth is a downhill par-3 at 147 yards with a severely sloped green and trouble off the green.

The front nine ends with a 377-yard par-4 that is another dogleg left and is uphill. There is a lot of room to the right on this dogleg to bail out, but a tall tree can block a long approach shot into the green.

The back nine starts with a great risk/reward hole. At 314

Football schedules released for 2016 high school season

The new Southwest Prairie Conference kicks off this year with the addition of Joliet Central and Joliet West.

The conference decided to have all 10 teams play each other in the nine-game schedule, meaning there will be no non conference games for teams in the conference, but there will be a balanced schedule. Here is a breakdown of each team’s schedule in the SPC.

JOLIET CENTRAL The Steelmen (0-9) begin play Aug. 26 with a home game against Plainfield East (4-5) at 6:30 p.m. in their initiation to the SPC. A home game the following Friday against Minooka (5-5) ensues.

Their first road game in conference play is at Oswego East (6-4) before they return home for a Saturday game against Plainfield Central (0-9). The Plainfield rotation continues with a trip to South (5-5) before a home game against North (6-4).

Joliet Central then travels to perennial SPC powerhouse Oswego (9-3) before a home game with rival Joliet West (45) on a Saturday. The regular season comes to a close with a trip to Romeoville (1-8), which the Steelmen faced the first couple years of the split.

Locals compete in Illinois Open The 67th Illinois Open Championship was contested in St. Charles.

Carlos Sainz Jr. of Elgin had an impressive showing, winning the tournament by five strokes over Christian Heavens of Fairview Heights at 17-under par, a 197 three-round total. He entered the final round in first place and matched the low round of the final round torches to the win.

The top Voyager Media area finisher was Andy Michelson of Lockport. Mickelson, the golf pro at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, finished in a tie for

fifth with a 7-under par total, 207. He opened with a 5-under 67 before back-to-back 70s brought him out of contention.

The only other Voyager Media player to make the cut was the defending Illinois Open champ, David Cooke of Lisle, a Bolingbrook graduate. Cooke had rounds of 71, 74 and 70 to finish in a tie for 29th with a 215 total.

Several locals competed, but came up short of the cut, including several who narrowly missed.

Chase Rice to perform pre-race show in Joliet Chicagoland Speedway announced country music singer and songwriter Chase Rice will perform the pre-race concert for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400, the first race in the Chase for The NASCAR Sprint Cup on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Florida-born and North Carolina-raised, Rice played football on scholarship at the University of North CarolinaChapel Hill and worked on a NASCAR pit crew before moving to Nashville to pursue his career in music. Rice has a special passion for NASCAR, developed first through years of attending races while following his father’s racing career and through his own career experience within the sport.

“Racing is in my blood. My dad actually used to race when we lived in Florida and won his class at 24 Hours of Daytona, and my

first job out of college was with Hendrick Motorsports, so being at the track is like home to me,” said Rice. “NASCAR has the most passionate fans in the world, so it’s really cool to be able to come back as a performer now and combine two of the things I love the most – music and NASCAR. We’re going to have a good time kicking off the Chase!”

Rice recently released “Everybody We Know Does,” the first single from his highly anticipated, as-yet-untitled new album. yards and a sharp dogleg left, the green is reachable for longer hitters. However, there isn’t much room for the ball to land without it being in trouble as bunkers line up in front of the green to block the shortcut and woods are behind and to the right of the green to snag bouncing balls through the green. It is only a short club to lay up to keep out of the trees off the tree.

No. 11 is a downhill par-5 at 527 yards and takes a good drive to get it over fescue to the fairway. There also are trees left of the fairway and water right, making it a tough driving hole.

No. 12 is 390 yards but is pretty tight, making it another difficult hole.

The 13th hole is just 146 yards,

Saturday is next before they finally get a home game against Notre Dame (8-2). A trip to Woodstock to face Marian Central (8-3) is next up before a home game against Nazareth, which beat JCA in the playoffs last year.

JCA goes back on the road for games against Benet (8-3) and Marian Catholic (1-8) before a third and final home game to end the season against Marist (9-5).

The Porters came close to a playoff berth last year and hope to get over that hump this year. They

open play at Downers North (5-5) before a home game against South Elgin (9-2).

The new look Southwest Suburban Conference opens with a Porters trip to familiar foe Lincoln-Way Central (4-5).

A home game against Homewood-Flossmoor (102) is next, followed by a trip to Andrew (3-6). The tough schedule continues with home games against Bolingbrook (5-5) and Lincoln-Way West (11-3) before a road game at Stagg (2-7). The season concludes with a trip to Lincoln-Way East (8-3).

but it is far from easy. It plays a bit uphill and over some weeds and water with bunkers surrounding the green. The green is also tricky and the hole location the day we played was almost impossible as being a couple feet off would send it down a hill.

Next is a 383-yard dogleg right that is one of the more forgiving holes off the tee, et is still dangerous. Hole 15 offers up some great views off the tee on the 529-yard, downhill par5. There is a creek guarding the green, making it tough to go for in two, despite the elevation drop.

The 16th hole is 159 yards with water right and bunkers all around and is followed with a 411-yard par-4 that doglegs right and features bunkers in tough

spots.

The 18th hole is sadly nothing special of a closing hole as it is a slight dogleg left with several bunkers to the left and in front of the green.

It surprised me that the greens here were much faster and had more slope to them. The hole locations made it the most difficult greens I’ve had to deal with.

There is more water on this course than The General, and, in my opinion, is just as difficult overall.

The cost is a little cheaper than The General at peak time at $115.

Still, it is unlike most courses you will find in the state and is a good course to pair with The General on a golf trip to Galena.

We don’t like our current home very much, and we’d like to sell and move as soon as possible. We have a little over $30,000 equity in the place, so would selling the house be a viable option for funding Baby Step 3?

Justin Dear Justin, I wouldn’t sell the house just to do Baby Step 3. That’s usually a pretty easy Baby Step after you’ve gotten everything paid off except the house. As you know, a fully funded emergency fund means saving three to six months of expenses, so you shouldn’t have to sell your home in

However, if you don’t like the house anyway, and you’re already planning on selling it, then yes, set some of the equity aside. I wouldn’t put all of the equity into the next deal. I’d hold back my three to six months of expenses, so that when you move into another house you’re debt-free with a fully funded emergency fund sitting there.

It sounds like there’s nothing to prevent you from selling it today, if you’re sure that’s what you both want to do. Just hold onto enough so that you still have an emergency fund in place, and use the remainder for your down payment. So if that equation works for you, sell the house. If not, you may need to completely save up your emergency fund before you sell in order to make it work.

Regardless, when you move I want you to have an emergency fund and be debt-free in addition to your down payment. That’s what we’re after!

For more than a decade, the Pokemon franchise has been catching the attention of fans from coast to coast.

But when augmented reality met the real world in July, Joliet, Shorewood and their surrounding suburbs joined countless communities across the nation to be overcome with Pokemania.

The mobile app Pokemon Go saw its nationwide release July 6, and so did the anticipation of the many fans drawn to the popular franchise. The locationbased, augmented-reality game is designed to lure gamers of all ages to try their hand at becoming Pokemon “trainers.”

Jacob Seiler, 11, of Plainfield, was one of many Pokemon trainers at Louis Joliet Mall, visiting the Pokestop made available at its GameStop location.

“It’s enjoyable because there’s a lake right by my house and there’s a path around,” he said.

“You can walk around it, and you’ll catch Pokemon; there’s a bunch of Pokemon.”

Seiler noted that he’s a big fan of the franchise, which includes video games, an animated TV series and trading cards. Pokemon, which grew in popularity in the late 1990s, is centered on fictional creatures of the same name. Seiler said he is on level 4 in the most recent Pokemon game. To date, Seiler said catching a Drowzee (Google it) was his biggest accomplishment.

Roman Ortega, 8, of Plainfield, said he was looking forward to hitting up the mall’s Pokestop.

These sites can be located at parks, post offices, water towers, libraries, village halls, memorials and many other public places.

“I like that I can move, and you’re actually in real life,” Ortega said, who added that his favorite Pokemon is Charmander (again, Google). “I like that it’s really strong.”

Ortega’s mom, Julie, said he’s a big fan of Pokemon.

“We just downloaded the app onto my phone yesterday, and ever since he’s been talking about it nonstop,” she said.

Julie noted that Roman is a natural when it comes to playing games and apps.

“It’s always a struggle with him to get him to do chores and ‘like’ schoolwork,” she added.

“Although it’s summer vacation, I still have him trying to read a little bit and write a paragraph.”

Still, the Plainfield mom said she sees positives in allowing her son to play Pokemon Go. “This might be good, I was thinking, because at least he’s like, ‘OK, mom, let’s go to the park; there’s a stop there,’” she said. “So, then we get out of house to go to the stop. It’s not really getting away from technology, but it might help a little bit.”

Gavin Carrasco, 10, of Romeoville, said he really enjoys playing the app. “We went to Chicago just recently and all we did was walk around and stuff and have fun and stuff,” he said.

Carrasco said he caught a Pikachu recently, and that’s his favorite Pokemon character right now.

Gavin’s dad, Victor, said he likes the way the app motivates his son to be active.

“I like it just because he actually gets out and gets away from traditional video games.

We’re seeing a lot more families by the parks now kind of doing it all together.”

Victor said he’s been surprised by his wife’s reaction to Pokemon Go and the way the game encourages the whole family to play together.

“Since the kids do it, she usually tags along,” he said. “Now, she’s kind of into it. Anything that

promotes them getting outside works for me.”

Gavin is level 7 in the game, and said he would surely recommend the app to others.

“If you need help, I bet there’s going to be people outside playing anywhere you go,” he said.

Gabriel Hernandez, 17, of Joliet, is a long-time fan of Pokemon, and said the release of the game refueled his interest in the popular franchise.

“It just kind of brought it back,” he said.

To date, Hernandez said, he is level 18 in the game.

Hernandez said he really likes

how the game motivates he and others to get out and be active.

Hernandez noted that since downloading the app, he’s found a few hotspots along the way, and he finds a lot of Pokemon whenever he goes to these places.

“It’s Pilcher Park,” he said. “And if not, it’s also Bicenntenial Park.

Those are hotspots.”

Hernandez said these are two places Pokemon Go has taken him that he otherwise wouldn’t have visited. “All the people that are there…” Hernandez said. “It’s also nice. The views there are nice. The monuments there are pretty good, too.”
