Channahon, Troy Food Truck Fridays Head to District have land deal Property generally located south of Route 6 and east of I-55 will be annexed to Village of Channahon

To ensure public improvements are in place promoting safety near new development plans for a 290acre site of incorporated land, the Troy Community Consolidated School District 30C Board of Education earlier this year agreed to a pact with the Village of Channahon.

According to the agreement, the property generally located south of Route 6 and east of I-55 will be annexed to the Village of Channahon.

Board member Kristin Dawn Cross gave credit to the superintendent and the executive director of operations and finance for their work on this matter.

“This promotes business and infrastructure within our community,” she said. “We did some compromise, and it was a good thing.”

Board Secretary David Talarico agreed.

“I think it’s the right way to do an agreement and a right reason to, as well,” he said. “It’s fair to the taxpayers, it’s fair to us.”

Talarico added that forming this pact is the right course of action to take for other taxing bodies involved in this process also.

Crossroads 55 intends to develop the land as four or more projects come on line.

The developers wanted to put the property to use, and recognized that it’s not commercially feasible without assistance to improve the I-55 East Frontage and Amoco roads and extend municipal water service lines.

Local taxing bodies involved in the effort include the Village of Channahon, Channahon School District 17, Minooka Community High School District 111, Will and Grundy counties, Troy Community Consolidated School District 30C, Will County Forest Preserve District, Channahon Park District, Channahon Fire Protection District, Community College District No. 52, Channahon Township, Channahon Township Road District, Three River Public Libraries District.

The construction consists of a number of projects, including improvements to roadways, traffic signals and a water main.

Anticipated costs include road improvements of $7,855,500 and a water main of $2,620,509. Additionally, traffic signal improvements found reimbursable will not exceed the lesser of $500,000.

The agreement stipulates that each of the taxing bodies involved will reimburse Crossroads for the improvements by ordering the Will County Clerk to abate 100 percent of the real estate taxes otherwise payable to that district for each project.

Lake Renwick

Each Friday, a different lineup of food trucks will be on site from 4:30-7 p.m.

The wildly popular “Food Truck Fridays” combines the public’s love of food and nature, and after successful runs at Whalon Lake in Naperville and Hickory Creek Barrens Nature Preserve in New Lenox, the weekly event will be coming to Lake Renwick Preserve – Turtle Lake Access in Plainfield in August.

Each Friday, a different lineup of food trucks will be on site from 4:30-7 p.m., and preserve patrons and food truck fans alike will be able to purchase tasty treats as they explore the preserve.

During each “Food Truck Friday,” Forest Preserve staff will be on site with preserve information and items for check out, including binoculars and field guides. Scheduled activities will get you out exploring the preserve and taking in some fresh air and exercise, before or after you nosh to your heart’s content on some food truck fare.

Your Garage is a Window into Your Home

Use containers to maximize space and accessibility

When your garage door is open, neighbors as well as total strangers catch a glimpse of your home. An organized garage will form a favorable impression on those who see it, and will also allow you to maximize its usefulness. Here are some tips that will allow you to take advantage of a nice summer day and get your garage in order: DETERMINE WHAT YOU WANT TO STORE IN THE GARAGE List broad categories, like garbage and recycling supplies, sporting equipment, gardening equipment, camping gear, beach supplies, car supplies, and tools. If your garage is really loaded with stuff, your goal may include being able to park the car in it!

PULL EVERYTHING OUT As scary and overwhelming as this may seem, it’s the best way to sort your belongings. If you can’t tackle the entire garage in one day, focus on a specific area to clean and organize. As you move things from the garage to your lawn or driveway, sort them into the categories identified in the first step.

SORT THROUGH THE ITEMS YOU’VE PULLED OUT Go through one category at a time, and carefully consider whether each item is worth keeping. For each item you want to dispose of, determine whether you will donate it, sell it at a garage sale, consign it to a resale shop, give it to someone else, or toss it. Use a separate box or bag to collect items for each disposal option. Be sure to check with your sanitary district to determine the proper way to dispose of hazardous waste (old paint, motor oil, etc.).

DETERMINE WHERE TO STORE EACH CATEGORY It’s best to store things near their point of use or where they’re retrieved easily, and to store all of the items from each category in the same area – this will make it easier to find things, and will also make it easier for all family members to put things back where they belong.

MAXIMIZE VERTICAL STORAGE SPACE Your garage walls offer many storage options. You can use pegboards to store tools, as well as yard and gardening equipment. You can install shelves to hold boxes and other containers, and hooks to hold bikes and other

Operation results in arrest of 16 suspected gang members

like the one conducted today greatly expand the ability of law enforcement to defuse gang activity while taking illegal weapons and narcotics off our streets,” said Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

“We work closely with our local police agencies on a daily basis to keep our neighborhoods safe. But the participation of federal agencies like ATF

puts significant additional resources and manpower into the mix and lets drug dealers and gun traffickers know without question that we mean business.”

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said: “We appreciate the outstanding inter-agency cooperation displayed in this case by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad, the Will County States Attorney’s Office, and the Joliet Police Department to target those involved in gun and drug trafficking in the City of Joliet. We will continue to work together to improve the safety of our citizens.”

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office reminds the public that charges are not evidence of guilt.

A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which time the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Kopman said if he had to pinpoint why Troy Township decided to appoint him, it comes down to several key factors.

“I would have to emphasize how I am a Will County resident,” he said. “I grew up in Peotone. I lived and worked on a farm. I’ve lived in Troy Township since 2000. I’ve served in many capacities through civic organizations. I have a lot of experience that gives me a feeling for the community’s needs, and I can bring a wide array of experience to the job.”

Kopman credits his upbringing for helping him to find and follow his path in life.

“It had always been instilled in me by family to giveback,” he said. “I’ve blessed in my personal and professional life. It’s important to giveback. When I got out of law school and got situated, I felt a need to get involved. Serving as a Troy Township trustee is a good way to do that.”

Kopman said he is excited to have the opportunity to work with the other members of the board to handle the board’s business.

“Having practiced as an attorney in Will County, I bring a new perspective that’s not there on the board,” he said. “No one else is a lawyer. [Having my] perspective along with the perspectives of the

other people on the board, that sets us to best serve Troy Township and its residents.”

Kopman said he is ready to work for the residents of Troy Township.

“Troy Township has an excellent history of providing an array of services to residents and in doing so in a fiscally conservative way,” he said. “It has a great track record of not wasting taxpayer dollars and getting the most mileage out of them.

Kopman said he thinks the board’s biggest challenges moving forward come down to one main factor. “The issues facing Illinois and the uncertainty in Springfield, I think that’s the most pressing issue,” he said. “To provide the services we provide and in doing so in a responsible manner as stewards of our residents’ tax dollars is my primary objective.”

Kopman intends to work toward a set of goals in his time as a trustee.

“The biggest goal I hope to accomplish is the trust and confidence of Troy Township,” he said.

“I hope they’ll come to me with issues and concerns, and trust that I’ll work with them to address those issues and concerns.”

Kopman is expected to serve out the remainder of his term, which expires in 2021.

Many of arrested individuals are suspected gang members, as well as the seizure of 31 illegal weapons and more than 200 grams of cocaine JOLIET – A joint law enforcement operation executed Tuesday morning has resulted in arrest warrants for 16 individuals, many who are suspected gang members, as well as the seizure of 31 illegal weapons and more than 200 grams of cocaine.

More than 100 law enforcement agents from the federal and local levels swept through the community early Tuesday morning arresting individuals on charges ranging from Class X drug dealing to Class 4 illegal sale of firearms.

Several individuals were charged with possession of stolen firearms or gunrunning.

Five of the individuals were charged with being armed habitual criminals based on their extensive criminal records.

The cooperative law enforcement operation was conducted by the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Joliet Police Department, the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The agencies have been working together for months with the State’s Attorney’s Office to build cases on those arrested in a wide-ranging operation that did not target a specific gang.

Troy Township Board of Trustees fill vacant seat

Bryan Kopman is excited to bring his experience and perspective to the Troy Township board.

The Shorewood resident was recently appointed to the Troy Township board to serve out the remainder of the late Don Walden’s term.

“I’m honored by the appointment, the trust, the confidence shown by [Township Supervisor Joe] Baltz and the trustees,” Kopman said. “It’s bittersweet.”

Kopman, attorney employed by Kavanagh Grumley & Gorbold, is graduate of Northwestern Univer-

sity and University of Notre Dame School of Law, is a lifelong resident of Will County and was a former Troy Township Planning Commission chairman.

Kopman said he hopes he can step in and assume what would’ve been Walden’s role to the best of his ability.

“Those are big shoes to fill,” the Shorewood resident said. “He was a very giving public servant.”

Baltz said with Kopman on board, Troy Township found an ideal candidate to assume the role.

“He was No. 1 in my mind to replace Troy Township Trustee Don Walden,” he said.

Baltz said the Township couldn’t hold off its decision to appoint another trustee to serve for long.

The Township had 60 days from the date in which the vacancy was reported to appoint a replacement and subsequently the trustees approved the seating of a new member in a unanimous vote.

The trustees will have a number of different decisions to make as the business of the board progresses in the coming months, including a levy, budget adoption, improvements to the Troy Township parking lot.

Baltz said he thinks Kopman is ready to begin the work of Troy Township Board.

Pool hours for fall The Lockport Township Park District’s outdoor pools will switch to fall hours on Monday, Aug. 14.

Woodruff is a different play than the other Joliet courses

What does a golfer do when they walk up to a tee box with a 350-yard par-4 with an open shot straight down the middle of the fairway staring them in the face?

I guess the answer to that question depends – do you trust your driver?

If you are a big hitter and can all-but guarantee your driver to go right where you want it, then Joliet’s Woodruff Golf Course will be a cake walk for you.

For most, however, that is not the case and the course has many hidden hazards in its short, straight layout.

Woodruff is a course that has no par-5s and features eight holes that play 352 yards or less, many of them relatively straight from tee to green.

That is where the mind games come in.

Most recreational players have had those drives over the course of their game where everything goes perfect and you felt like

Bubba Watson as you watched the ball soar blissfully into a clear blue sky and land more than 300 yards from the point you hit it never wavering from the perfect line it started on.

Well as you stand at a tee box like No. 3 at Woodruff, a 306-yard par-4 that has a beautiful treelined tunnel staring you in the face – everything in your head says play a fairway wood or a long iron, get the ball down to an easy pitch onto the green and leave yourself a makeable birdie putt.

Your heart however remembers that perfect drive and you know that if you can just recreate it here, on this one hole, you can easily drive the green and be the topic of barstool stories for years.

So, putting everything smart to the side, you grab the driver, swing out of your mind to make sure you get the right carry – and pull it 30-yards off the fairway into the trees that looked so pretty forming a receiving line for the drive you hoped you had and

Crest Hill headed to zone — again

In the 17 years that the PONY Zone tournament has been held in Bay Ridge, MI, there has never been a team that has qualified for the tournament three consecutive years – until now.

“This is awesome,” said Crest Hill coach Joe Marshall, who is in his 38th year as coach. “This is something special. There are not too many in-house programs that have the success we have. I really can’t think of any.”

Crest Hill selected its 13-play-

er All-Star roster from a total of 24 13-and-14-year old players, while some programs select from 100 or more players.

To advance to the tournament, Crest Hill needed to defeat the Kankakee All Stars twice in the double elimination tournament.

In the first game, Crest Hill jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning until back-toback home runs cut the lead to 7-4.

Yes, folks, welcome to Woodruff.

Of the three Joliet courses, Woodruff is the one that sits more outside the city at 621 Gougar Rd. and is maybe the more forgotten courses of the trio – but that should not be the case.

Woodruff is as fun and challenging as any of the Joliet courses and offers golfers scenery and elevation changes not found on the other two.

This course plays 5,670 yards from the back tees, plays at a par68 and is a true test of accuracy.

While several holes on the front will test your discipline in club selection, the final 12 holes all bring water into the mix off the tee shots and on approach shots.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 2017 | BUGLENEWSPAPERS.COM The course opens with a threepack of mentally challenging, tree-lined holes measuring 352, 348 and 306-yards, respectively.

If you stay straight on these, the day will start well. If not, you will feel more like Paul Bunyan than Rickie Fowler.

The 202-yard par-3 fourth is no break from the mental grind.

Number 6 is a 259-yard par 4 and the easiest hole on the course if you play it smart.

While the first sight of sustained water may be a good thing if you are stranded on an island, but not so much on a golf course, and that is what you get on No. 7.

The 157-yard par-3 plays over a pond and starts a water theme that will be part of the rest of the day.

Number 8 is again a sub-300yard par-4, measuring in at 293 yards and is a nice break before

the 385-yard No. 9, the second toughest hole on the course.

The back opens with a picturesque 322-yard par-4 that takes you downhill and then back up again. You don’t have to be a huge hitter to clear the creek that bisects the fairway here, but don’t worry about how much you clear it by.

Landing in the fairway here is important and offers you a nice approach shot.

Number 11 is the ultimate risk/ reward hole on the course.

The safe play on this 372-yard dogleg right is to play a long iron or short wood to the landing area straight ahead of the tee box and play a second mid iron to the green.

If you want a short wedge in your hand for your second shot, you can risk the big drive and attempt to cut the left corner of the

dogleg and try and cleat the trees and fenced-in back yards to give yourself a shorter approach.

Next comes Woodruff’s signature hole – the 178-yard par-3 cliff hole. Hitting the ball on the right side of the green will often let the ball funnel to many of the hole locations.

The 349-yard slight dogleg right is next. Playing this hole too far right can leave you either in the woods or blinded on your second shot. The best play here is to the left of the fairway – even if you need to lay up in front of the creek and take a longer approach to the green.

The final par-3 on the course is next. At 167-yards, choose your 170-yard iron and hit it straight and you will be just fine.

The next three holes play 362, 308 and 306 and are playable holes as long and you hit your

spots. Creeks and swampy areas make some landing spots tricky – but lay up and give yourself a better second look.

Woodruff ends with the hardest rated hole on the course – a 387-yarder that plays downhill to a creek and then uphill where unless you hit a booming drive, you are likely to have a blind approach to the green.

Non-residents can ride Woodruff for $56 on the weekends ($40 to walk), while it is $50 on the weekday ($34).

Residents of the Joliet Park District pay $44 on the weekend ($28) and $39 on the weekday ($34).

Sure, almost $60 is probably a steep price to pay for most Park District courses, if you are going to play any of the three courses in Joliet – this is the one I would recommend.

In the win, Crest Hill relied on small ball, laying down eight bunts - four of them suicide squeezes. Ethan Adamowski had a double in the title game.

“We laid down a pair of two strike squeeze bunts, one two strike bunt with men on first and second,” Marshall said. “We just bunted them to death and they just couldn’t handle it – nobody was covering or they made bad throws – and we just kept it coming. Everyone on my team can bunt. We work on it every day in practice and the kids are good at it. They have confidence that they can do it and half the battle is thinking they can do it.”

In the Pony Region Tournament, Crest Hill defeated Bradley 7-5 to advance, but lost Edgar Rodriquez for the rest of the season with a broken tibia in his left leg. Rodriquez had a pair of hits before exiting the game. He was Crest Hill’s second leading hitter during the All-Star tournaments and one of its pitchers.

Crest Hill will also head to Zone without Joey Esparza who is moving to Texas. Ezparza was hitting .428.

“Not having those two go to Michigan will sting a lot,” Marshall said. “Esparza had great speed on the bases and Rodriquez was a clutch hitter seeming to always come up with a two out hit.”

The group that will travel to

Michigan will be centerfielder Tucker Holmgren, who is the leadoff hitter batting .324. Third baseman Mason Craig (.275), Right fielder Eli Novak (.300), First baseman and outfielder Adamowski (.333), outfielder and middle infielder Stevie Bakalar (.250) outfielder, first baseman Ashton Mutnansky (.278) , pitcher and first baseman Brodie McIntrye (.200) and second baseman Xavier Roman (.346).

Shortstop and pitcher Sam Novak is hitting .429, Highland, who catches when he is not on the mound is batting .400, while Josh Cunniff, who pitches, catches and plays shortstop is hitting .514 during All-Stars and has 15 home runs on the season.

Cunniff, who will be a freshman at Plainfield Central this coming school year, broke Crest Hill’s all-time regular season record with a batting average of .635 – the only Crest Hill batting average ever better than .600 for a season.

Crest Hill won the first two tournaments of the campaign in Elgin and Whiteford.

In Elgin, Crest Hill defeated Wasco 18-5 in the title game, while it beat Whiteford 3-2 in eight winnings to win the second invite.

Marshall is assisted by Jason Craig and Erik Bakalar on the coaching staff, while he and his wife Donna have been run Crest Hill Pony Baseball for more than nearly 30 years.

‘Helping’ daughter is really no help

BY DAVE RAMSEY daveramsey.com DEAR DAVE, My wife and I have been helping our adopted daughter financially for some time. She’s 25, has been married for three years, and we don’t see this cycle stopping anytime soon. The worst part is, they will often throw in that our grandchild will go without something unless we help. We’re certain this isn’t teaching them to stand on their own feet, but we don’t know what else to do.

DAVID DEAR DAVID, You’re right about one thing.

It’s time they both learned how to handle money like mature, responsible adults. I don’t know how much your tried to teach her about finances when she was growing up, but it sounds like this “needing help” thing is turning into an endless cycle.

You’re giving them money left

and right, and it’s not working.

You’re giving them fish, and you’ve heard that whole saying. You could also teach them to fish and then not give them any fish, but I like a third choice in this scenario — give them fish only if they take fishing lessons.

They get no more money from you unless they get financial counseling together and make a serious move toward straightening up their lives.

If they try to play on your feelings by saying your grandchild is hungry, tell them to send the child over for a meal.

They’ve figured out if they hold your feet to the fire when it comes to this grandbaby, you’re going to open the wallet. They’re playing you right now, and it’s not to their benefit — or yours!

DEAR SUSAN, Actually, you’ll end up costing yourself interest. Never take a loan against your retirement!

When you pay interest against your retirement, you cost yourself interest. If you leave the company — which you will someday — the loan against the 401(k) is due within 60 days. If you don’t pay it off, they consider it an early withdrawal and you’ll get taxed and penalized bigtime.

If you have a certifiable emergency, like owing the IRS or facing a foreclosure, you may have to withdraw some. You’ll still get taxed, but please don’t ever borrow against retirement!
