WBO fifth graders attend Orientation Day Orientation is designed to give new WBO students a jump on particulars of new school Hundreds of students who will be attending William B. Orenic Intermediate School for the first time recently met for fifth-grade Orientation Day. The orientation, which took place a week before the official first day of school, is designed to give new WBO students a jump on the particulars of the new school.

They learned how to work a combination lock and access their lockers, got tips on the best ways to change classes throughout the day, received their class schedules, and played various team-building games.

“I’m looking forward to WBO because it’s bigger, and you have to change classes,” new student

Ella Randich said, adding that her favorite subject is reading.

Fifth grader Isaac Taylor also said he was looking forward to starting a school year at the new school. Taylor, whose favorite subject is math, said he’s excited to meet all the new teachers.

Principal Larry Piatek, who began the program last year, said Orientation Day is a big help to the students who are coming from grade schools that might have as few as 100 students. With a student population of about 500, WBO students also have physical education class every day, a stricter dress code, more than one teacher for core classes, and more food choices at lunch.

Joliet Junior College program inspires Shorewood student to get technical Submitted By Melissa Lachcik Joliet Junior College When Camden Zielinski attended a boys technology camp at Joliet Junior College in the summers of 2012, he didn’t know it would have a profound impact his education and career goals.

This fall, the Shorewood resident will be entering his senior year at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, but he has been attending technical classes at JJC since the eighth grade. It was Zielinski’s positive experience in the boys technology camp, along with a natural curiosity to figure out how things work, that inspired him to pursue this path.

As early as the age of 9, Zielinski enjoyed taking things apart and fixing them. He would ask for tools, saws and drills instead of toys, and spend hours working in the garage to fix just about anything. He even started a lawn mowing business at age 10.

Zielinski said school was boring to him before he went to the technology camp, and his mother was always trying to find different activities to interest him. In summer 2012, Zielinski’s mother, Lucy, signed her son up for a mew class being offered through JJC’s kids college. The boys technology camp is held for threedays and provides students with

an opportunity to explore various technical career pathways in a hands-on environment.

Technical areas include: architecture, engineering and construction, automotive, computer-aided design and drafting, electrical, industrial maintenance technology, manufacturing, orthotics and prosthetics, robotics and welding.

This year, 3D printing in the MakerLab was added.

Intriguing as the camp sounds, it wasn’t exactly an easy task to convince Zielinski to go. He reminisced about the first day of camp when his mother was driving him to JJC. “I was having a fit in the car and didn’t want to go because I thought I would have to sit there and just listen,” he said. “But, thank goodness she made me go.”

What Zielinski, who was heading into eighth grade at the time, didn’t realize about technology camp was that he would actually get to learn by doing. All of the activities were hands-on and included things like making a foot impression, testing electrical circuits, using a virtual welder and more.

“I really liked the hands-on activities,” Zielinski added. “We were busy and it was fun!”

“Students also get to learn about multiple career pathways and find out what options are available depending on their interests,” Large added.

Students are taught by various JJC technical professors, who share knowledge and experience in their respective areas. The faculty donate their time to teach the technology camp in the summer.

One prime example is JJC technical professor Dr. Jeff Bradford, who teaches the Pneumatics session and currently serves as the technical department chair.

During the inaugural camp, Bradford took notice of Zielinski’s talent and enthusiasm. He encouraged the eighth grader to consider taking a college class at JJC. “I believe having a true determination to succeed is instrumental in college success,” Bradford said. “Camden exhibited a passion for the subject matter, and I sensed that determination in him.”

After giving it some thought, Zielinski decided to sign up for IMT 121 - Industrial Fluid Power in Fall 2012 at JJC. “He’d been interested in things mechanical and electrical prior to technology camp,” Bradford added. “I believe when he realized that he could learn more about the subjects he was interested in at JJC, he became more interested in attending school. And, I hope he learned that learning does not have to be boring.”

However, being the youngest student in a college class had its challenges. He remembers

Bradford told him that the expectations are higher and he would have to conduct himself like a responsible adult.

“At the beginning, as a grammar school kid, it was intimidating to go to school with adults,” Zielinski said. “But when they realized I knew what I was doing and was serious about learning, they accepted me.

“Dr. Bradford has been an incredible resource and mentor to me. I am grateful for his time and guidance, and that he took an interest in me.”

County auditor to cover fraud prevention at upcoming seminar Limited seats; early sign up encouraged Will County Auditor Duffy Blackburn announced an upcoming seminar designed to train community and governmental organizations on ways to notice and prevent fraud.

The seminar, scheduled for Aug. 23, will help train community governments, nonprofit organizations and school districts on how to better identify the types, costs and red flags of common internal fraud schemes.

“You talk about news stories turning up fraud cases so frequently,” Blackburn said. “At each organization, you really need to be proactive, set the right tone at the top and keep an eye out for risks. We’ve found that the extra effort is critical to reduce the risks and costs that we face in Will County.”

A certified public accountant and certified information systems auditor, Blackburn is also a graduate professor in computer fraud and IT auditing at Benedictine University.

Additionally, Angela Morelock, from the firm BKD, will speak at the seminar. Blackburn said Morelock is an expert instructor on the subject of fraud prevention.

Joliet business woman becomes 29th recipient of ATHENA Award Award to be presented at Sept. 14 luncheon The Joliet Chamber of Commerce and the Council for Working Women announced last week that Will County businesswoman Diane Habiger would be the 2016 recipient of the ATHENA Award.

Habiger will be the 29th recipient of the award, which she’ll be presented at a Sept. 14 luncheon at Mistwood Golf Club.

The ATHENA Award Program was developed in 1982 to honor exceptional female or male leaders who demonstrate the highest levels of professional excellence, give back to their communities, and actively assist women in realizing their full leadership potential.

Habiger is the co-owner of Lincolnshire Properties, which leases apartments in Plainfield and conventional office space in Joliet, Plainfield and Naperville.

She and her husband, Bill, also own Lincolnshire Business Center in Joliet.

“As a true community leader, Diane has been instrumental to the advancement of women in the Joliet region,” the chamber stated in a release announcing the award. “She has been a driving force in the recruitment of women into the Rotary Club of Joliet, the Joliet Catholic Academy Board of Directors, and Board of Trustees at the University of St. Francis.

“Diane assisted on a committee appointed by a Supreme Court Justice that resulted in the appointment of two female candidates, often assists women that have been out of the workforce with their resume and letters of recommendation, and has urged many to participate in the Community Leadership School sponsored by the chamber.”

Citing her own experience, Habiger said she knows that many women need encouragement when returning to the workforce after an absence due to child rearing or other factors.

“Women need to believe in themselves and their capabilities,” said Habiger, who added that she found that encouragement in the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce.

Working on various committees at the Chamber and becoming active in the planning of Community Leadership School put her in the company of local leaders who became role models and encouraged community service.

Habiger stated that the chamber gave her the opportunity to learn how to contribute and become active in various educational and social causes.

“Diane fully embodies the spirit of the ATHENA Award and is a tremendous asset to her community,” the chamber added. “She has paved the way for other women to follow in her footsteps and realize their full potential.”

Forest preserve seeks public input on Will County bikeway plan Comment period opens Aug. 31; ends Sept. 30 The Forest Preserve District of Will County announced that a first-ever countywide bikeway plan will be available for public review and comment starting Aug. 31.

The plan, which will be available on the district’s website, www.reconnectwithnature. org, identifies areas where non-motorized transportation opportunities can be expanded throughout Will County and beyond.

According to the forest preserve district, greenways, roadways and utility corridors were reviewed as possible sites for bicycle access improvements.

After the public comment period ends Sept. 30, the plan will go to the district’s board of commissioners for approval. A vote is expected at the Nov. 10 meeting.

While some bikeway corridors already exist in the county, a comprehensive planning guide was needed to improve clarity between multiple user groups and levels of government.

The goals of the plan are to expand transportation choices, enhance connectivity, improve safety and comfort, and promote bicycling benefits.

Independent movie filmed in Joliet Aug. 20 City says movie will aid economic development efforts The city of Joliet announced last week that an independent film production company would begin shooting the movie, “Kingfisher,” Aug. 20.

The movie, which takes place in the fictional town of Kingfisher, involves ghosts, witches and a werewolf, the city said in a press release.

The fantasy, comedy that will be directed by Chicago native Austin Vesely, who has directed award-winning music videos.

Vesely’s recent music video “Angels” by Chance the Rapper is nominated for “Best Hip Hop

Video” at the upcoming 2016 MTV Video Music Awards.

“We are very excited that this production will come to Joliet and will feature our citizens and showcase the sites and scenery of our community,” Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said. “Movie productions are a vital part of our city’s economic development efforts.”

Brett Hays, one of the movie’s producers and a principal at Champaign’s Shatterglass Films, praised Joliet in a city news release.

“We look forward to working with Joliet city officials on this venture, and we have already received a warm welcome and offers of assistance from them,” he said.

Assistant city manager Steve Jones working with a film production will help showcase

Joliet to potential visitors.

“We like to roll out the red carpet to filmmakers and look forward to helping make “Kingfisher” a successful endeavor,” he said.

Additionally, the city said the film would feature unique Jolietarea locations and producers are looking to use local talent in the movie.

The 2016-17 school year is here, and I couldn’t be more excited for our students, staff and families.

Each new school year brings a long list of challenges – from shifting enrollments and student needs to implementing new teaching and learning initiatives; from hiring and acclimating more than 120 new teachers and staff to completing major capital projects; from dealing with changes in state testing to the (seemingly never ending) political battles over budgets and funding.

Yet the new school year also always brings more – and more important – opportunities and rewards than challenges.

Each year, our 28,000 students get to learn new skills and acquire new

knowledge, make and strengthen friendships, and grow and mature socially and emotionally.

Each year, our staff of 3,100 teachers, support staff and administrators help teach and support and mentor young minds and bodies and spirits.

And each year, our families help shape our community and the world one child at a time, through their special role as parents and guardians of our students.

Sadly, the challenges will always be there.

Something will always be making our work as education professionals more difficult than it should be.

Something will always make a child’s life harder than he or she deserves.

And whether we like it or not, the many social, political and financial issues that affect our community will always impact what happens in our schools.

There is so much about life that we simply cannot control.

Yet we can work together as educators and parents to make sure that our schools are always able to give our students the best opportunities for success.

Likewise, students can and must do everything they can to learn, achieve and grow to their greatest potential.

The start of every new school year is another chance for all of us to do our part to ensure that every child in our community is equipped today, for whatever tomorrow will bring.

That’s our shared solemn duty and our promise to the future – and to me, there’s nothing more exciting.

Have a great 2016-17 school year.

Together, we will continue to prepare learners for the future.

Despite multiple rulings from Illinois State Board of Elections, publications continue to print

By Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant State Senator 49th Senate district Many residents have noticed two new publications – the Will County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal – arriving at their doorstep recently.

Unbeknownst to readers, these papers are actually political mailings, intentionally designed to look like weekly newspapers and part of a new network of Illinois publications funded by the Liberty Principles PAC – a conservative political group allowed unlimited contributions and expenditures under

Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant campaign finance law.

The Illinois Press Association, which represents more than 450 papers throughout the state, recently warned readers about the “legitimacy, integrity and intent” of these publications, and the Illinois State Board of Elections found this network to be in violation of the Campaign Disclosure Act for not including the required “paid for” attributions and colluding with candidates, in violation of Illinois law.

Despite multiple Board rulings, the

publications continue to print and candidates, such as my opponent, continue to conduct interviews.

This is not about the First Amendment – I undoubtedly respect one’s right to free speech. This is about a super PAC going to extreme lengths to mislead readers in order to push a political agenda.

It’s unacceptable if these papers and its participants, such as my opponent, continue to break the law. Campaign finance and ethics laws were put in place to increase transparency and decrease undue influence by wealthy special interest groups. Residents deserve better.

In the spirit of running an ethical and legally compliant campaign, I ask all candidates to sever any communications with the Will County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal because voters deserve integrity with their news, not political propaganda masquerading as news.

Josh ferguson is looking to make a splash with the Colts this season.

ANDERSON, IN — When the NFL draft was over, former Joliet Catholic Academy and University of Illinois running back Josh Ferguson was undrafted and was a player without a team.

His time without a home did not last long.

On May 5, just five days after the draft, Ferguson agreed to a contract with the Indianapolis Colts and has not looked back.

“It was rough, especially the first couple days of the draft” Ferguson said. “But it was a blessing in disguise. I believe everything happens for a reason and I am just blessed to be here.”

The chance to show that he can play at the NFL level is all the 23-year-old, 5-foot, 10-inch, 200 pound running back was looking for.

“The opportunity alone is really exciting,” he said. “I was excited from the day I got the call. It has been an uphill progression and it has been an honor to work with

some of the guys I have worked with. I have been having a great time.”

One of the guys Ferguson has had the chance to work with is 12year veteran Frank Gore, who is in his second year with the Colts.

Like Ferguson, the 33-year-old Gore was an undrafted signee of the San Francisco 49ers in 2004 out of the University of Miami.

“It has been huge (to play behind Gore),” Ferguson said. “I have learned so much here in a few months from him. It has been awesome having Frank Gore as a resource. He has so many years of experience and he is a guy who has seen a lot of different phases of football. His help has done nothing but help project me to where I am now and I look forward to keep tapping into that resource.”

Ferguson has earned the praise of many within the Colts organization, including head coach Chuck Pagano and team owner Jim Irsay.

IHSA adds lacrosse in 2018; updates postseason heat rules The IHSA Board of Directors announced that the IHSA will debut its Boys Lacrosse State Series and Girls Lacrosse State Series in the spring of 2018.

“The addition of lacrosse builds on the IHSA mission of offering a wide range of participation opportunities for high school students in Illinois,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “The IHSA Board has been extremely diligent in evaluating lacrosse’s status as an IHSA sport over the past seven years, and based on the continued growth, felt the time was right to begin in the spring of 2018.”

The IHSA Board initially approved the start of a State Series in both Boy and Girls Lacrosse at their meeting in October 2009, contingent upon 65 schools simultaneously entering the Boys Lacrosse State Series and 40 schools entering the Girls Lacrosse State Series.

The entries were reviewed each January, but both thresholds were never reached. In 2015, 42 schools entered the girls’ tournament, but the boys’ entries came up short of 65. The benchmarks were not met this past January, but have since grown to 83 boys’ entries and 59 girls’ entries.

“The number of participating schools and students has continued to grow,” said IHSA Board President and Wauconda High School Principal Dan Klett.

“The Board is confident that there will be healthy participation numbers in 2018, which made us comfortable moving beyond the threshold numbers (65 and 40) from 2009 and simply establishing a start date for 2018. This is an important day for the IHSA and a decision we believe will spur growth in high school lacrosse throughout the state.”

The IHSA Boys & Girls Lacrosse State Finals are tentatively set to occur annually during Week 47 of the IHSA standardized calendar, which would slate the inaugural state finals to take place on Friday and Saturday, May 25-26, 2018.

The tentative schedule would include boys’ and girls’ semifinals on Friday and third-place/state championships on Saturday.

“We heard from many schools on the importance of establishing a starting day,” said Anderson.

“Now that our membership knows definitively that the IHSA lacrosse state series is happening in 2018, it allows them time to better integrate, budget, and build their programs. Subsequently, it allows us time to focus on taking the internal steps necessary to facilitate the tournament, as well as to recruit more officials, and determine a state final host site.”

The IHSA, which currently offers 14 Boys Sports and 15 Girls Sports, will offer a State Series in 31 total sports for high school students in Illinois in 2018, in addition to State Series’ in eight activities.

“The IHSA prides itself on providing comprehensive sport and activity options for students, and we are excited to have the lacrosse state tournaments join that offering,” said Anderson.

“Kudos to the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association (IHSLA) and Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association (IHSWLA), as well as the many many high school coaches and administrators who have carried the banner for lacrosse throughout the years. Not only have they helped grow high school lacrosse in Illinois, but they have been great advocates of the sport and resources for the IHSA throughout this process.”

The last sport added by the IHSA prior to lacrosse was competitive dance, which debuted in 2013. The Board will announce information on state final hosting bids in the coming months.

• The Illinois High School Association Board of Directors voted to enact new heat safety guidelines for all IHSA postseason contests beginning with the 201617 school year.

Officially called “Specific Guidelines for Managing Heat and Heat Illness”, the policy was created by the IHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

It applies only to State Series contests (Regionals, Sectionals, Super-Sectionals, State Finals, Football Playoffs), but the IHSA Board of Directors, Staff, Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and Illinois Advisory Council on Player Safety encourage all member schools to use the policy as their minimum standard for managing heat at athletic competitions.

“This policy builds on the IHSA’s tradition of putting studentathlete safety at the forefront,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “We believe we now have a policy that is very effective in safeguarding studentathletes, however schools are certainly welcome to impose even more stringent guidelines related to regular-season athletic competition in extreme heat if they choose to do so.”

The policy is built upon Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) readings, which take into account factors such as humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover, in addition to air temperature, and is considered the most effective way of judging dangerous conditions by the Korey Stringer Institute and other industry experts.

As the WBGT rises, the policy builds in different types of safety measures. For example, at a WBGT range of 80.0-84.5 degrees Fahrenheit, hosts would provide “cooling stations using methods such as ice towels”, while a WBGT range of 87.6-89.9 degrees Fahrenheit would require four separate four-minute water breaks within an hour of competition. At a WBGT of 90, all events would be

postponed to a cooler time of day or the next applicable day.

“According to the CDC, heat illness during practice or competition is the leading cause of death among U.S. high school athletes,” said Lindenwood University Department of Athletic Training Chair William Dill (MS, ATC, CSCS), who is a member of the IHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. “The first step for player safety is always prevention and this policy aims to prevent exertional heat illnesses by modifying competitions based on the WBGT. Hopefully, this policy will also raise awareness that exercising in the heat can be dangerous, but good policies can go a long way in protecting student-athletes.”

Anderson stressed that the IHSA Board and staff understand there may be initial resistance from coaches that extreme heat could significantly alter playing schedules, especially in sports like baseball, where rest for pitchers is an important part of game-planning. The IHSA piloted the policy during the IHSA Class 3A and Class 4A Baseball and Softball State Finals on June 10 and 11 at Silver Cross Field in Joliet and the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, respectively. The IHSA altered game times to avoid playing during the hottest hours of the day and also added in ice towels and water breaks, among other measures, as the WBGT dictated.

“Even with the extreme temperatures we saw on June 10 and 11, the WBGT never reached the threshold where we had to suspend or postpone play,” said Anderson. “Much of this policy is really aimed at common sense precautions, or making measures like in-game water breaks that schools were already imploring in hot temperatures a requirement instead of a suggestion.”

The IHSA used a Wet Bulb Globe Thermometer, which can provide an immediate WBGT reading, at both state final sites, however the device, which can range from approximately $100 dollars to $500 dollars, is not a requirement to adhere to the

Public vs. Private debate continues into new season The public vs. private debate has ramped up in recent years and for good reason.

Private schools have dominated some sports in recent years, which have left many people in public schools upset with the uneven playing field since private schools can “recruit” and can get athletes from all over an area, while public high schools aren’t (supposed) to recruit and students are within a boundary.

The numbers for some sports prove the grumblings as valid, none more so than girls volleyball.

The past five years a private school has won titles at BOTH the Class 3A and 4A level, with the Class 2A champion also coming from a private school three times in those five years. Private vs. private state final matches have also taken place at all three levels at least once during that time.

The only reason why that doesn’t happen more often is the IHSA tries to mask the private school domination by making the schools play each other before the state finals, and even before state at times.

The last non private champion in Class 4A was in 2010, while in 3A you have to go back to 2007!

Does this sound like a level playing field to you? Of course not!

While the IHSA’s new system has successful programs move up in classes, all that will do is keep the lower classes private free.

Meanwhile, it gets harder and harder for a public school to win in 4A with Mother McAuley, Benet and St. Francis all in 4A now (even though the IHSA made sure only one could get to state).

in Class 4A girls basketball may be also starting a trend as now private schools have won three of the past four state titles.

For the boys, football is always the topic of discussion when it comes to this debate, and for good reason.

Last year four of the top six classes have winners from private schools, with three out of the top four classes the previous two years having private school champs.

Dating back to at least 2009, at least half of the champions in Class 5A-Class 8A have been private schools each year. During that stretch, Montini has won seven straight championships.

It was forced up to Class 6A this past year, which just made things even harder for those 6A schools to win a title. The way the system is set up, there will likely always be a private school powerhouse in Class 5A as well.

Another recent trend has been found in baseball. The past four Class 4A state champions have been private school teams with Providence winning the past three titles.

All of these private schools play in conferences with other private schools. You don’t see Benet in the same conference as the Naperville schools or Providence with the Lincoln-Ways. That is because they are paired with

teams that have the same rules as them, which makes sense. Sure, there are a variety of schools that notoriously struggle in sports as private schools, but they wouldn’t do much better in public school conferences.

So, if private schools are separate in conference play, why should they be competing with public schools in the playoffs?

This makes little to no sense to me. A school like Providence can take some of the top players from the Lincoln-Way school district legally and turn around and knock a Lincoln-Way school out of the playoffs with the benefit of having the top players.

No wonder why some of these public schools have been recruiting. It surely isn’t right, but they know that is the only way to compete in some of these sports. Earlier I mentioned three of the past four girls basketball champions have come from private schools. Before that, a pair of teams went on successful state runs year after year with transfer students or players from throughout the Chicagoland area.

Not saying they were recruiting, but players wanted to play there so they transferred. It seems like creating mega teams is the best way to knock off private schools.

Now I know public schools will respond saying that many of the sports they never win titles and aren’t competitive in. This just further proves my point. In some of these other sports where private schools rarely win state titles, it would be much more beneficial to these schools to go up against one another so one of them win.

The best way to make this fair

would be to subtract a class or two from public schools and add a private school class, maybe even two if there are enough teams to warrant it.

For instance, you could have six public school classes in football and two private classes and have eight solid championship games featuring teams that should be competing with the same rules, as long as they are following them.

In the other major sports you can have three public classes and one private class and in smaller tiered sports you can have two public and one private.

Sports that have just one championship can either remain combined or have two total championships.

Under these rules, the only programs at a real disadvantage are the really small private schools who would have no chance against the big boys.

However, they typically struggle

against smaller public schools as well and if they didn’t they would be moved up to larger classes in the current system anyway.

The joke I have is teams like Benet in girls basketball and volleyball and Wheaton St. Francis in volleyball can’t move up to Class 5A, even though they constantly win.

Having them in a private school playoff is a great alternative where they can continue to compete for state championships against the top competition in the state, while public schools can feel like they have an honest chance of a state title without having to play a private powerhouse.

I don’t see the IHSA doing this anytime soon, but they should take notes from some other states who do this, and I would imagine they would see a great deal of benefits.

Slammers accept bids for naming rights to stadium The Joliet Slammers, presented

by ATI Physical Therapy, have announced that they will begin to accept bids for a new stadium naming rights partner for their home in downtown Joliet beginning with the 2017 season.

The facility, currently named Silver Cross Field, is an icon of downtown Joliet.

Located directly across from two Metra commuter rail stations and also the Joliet Amtrak Station, it is in a very attractive location from a traffic standpoint.

In addition to a full slate of Frontier League baseball every summer the ballpark is the home for the Illinois High School Association Class 3A and 4A state baseball championships, the home field for the University of St. Francis Fighting Saints baseball, the Slammers Youth Baseball Tournament, the annual

IHSA policy. The policy provides a WBGT conversion chart for tournament managers, who can attain the necessary information from most smart phone weather applications.

“It will undoubtedly take some time, resources and training to apply this policy,” said Anderson.

“However, we know our schools understand the importance of putting student safety first. The Play Smart. Play Hard. motto is built around that ideal.”

The IHSA established Play Smart. Play Hard. in 2015, which is a player-safety initiative aimed

“We think guys like Josh Ferguson have a chance to be special, time will tell. But we really like where we’re going.”

While Ferguson hears and appreciates the compliments, he only uses them to push him more.

“I try and stay low key and keep working. I stay hungry and work like the undrafted rookie that I am,” Ferguson said. “That is always exciting to hear all those positive words from the guys that you are working for – your coaches, your owner, the GM. It is positive pressure I can use on the field.”

He has found a way to stand out in a backfield with several veterans, including free agent signees Jordan Todman and Robert Turbin, who are also vying to be the No. 2 back when the season opens on Sept. 11 against the Detroit Lions.

“There a group of guys at the running back position that are all fighting and it is a pretty fierce competition,” said Colts offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski. “Josh has shown the ability to make plays and he has picked things up mentality and he is right in that mix.”

Ferguson’s career began Saturday in the Colts first preseason game at Buffalo where he got the start with Gore not playing and tallied three yards on a team-high eight carries.

The regular season will begin Sept. 11 at home against Detroit.

Ferguson will have the chance to travel to London Oct. 2 when the Colts face off against Jacksonville.

He will face his hometown Bears in Indianapolis Oct. 9.

Being signed by the Colts keeps Ferguson in the Midwest again for the third phase of his career – something he is excited for.

“It is awesome that people can come watch me. I love the city of Indianapolis and it is right down the road (from home), so it is close, but far enough away to stay focused,” he said.

Ferguson follows former Hilltopper Coby Fleener into the NFL and to Indianapolis. The former Stanford tight end was a 2012 draft choice of the Colts, but signed with the New Orleans Saints this past offseason.

Ferguson will be the second JCA running back to play in the NFL, following former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Mike Alstott.

“This is something you aspire to do when you are in high school and hear about all those great guys and you want to be that next guy,” Ferguson said. “To make it through the college ranks and to make it this far is a pretty cool deal. I am hoping I can be that next guy from JCA and I am hoping I represent them well.”

Not only is Ferguson following local high school legends, he is also in the same rookie class with one, as he joins former Bolingbrook standout linebacker Antonio Morrison as rookies looking to make an impact with the Colts.

“I have known Antonio for a little while,” Ferguson said. “In high school, our schools would compete in lifting championships and stuff, so it has been pretty cool to see his maturation at Florida and us ending up here is pretty cool that we get to represent those suburbs of Chicago.”

Ferguson has represented since leaving JCA, as he was often one of the lone bright spots on an Illinois team that did not enjoy a winning

season any of the four seasons he was a contributor.

His senior year, he was the Fighting Illini offensive player of the year and was All-Big Ten third team after missing three games due to injury.

He tallied 708 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 129 carries and tallied a team-best 78.7 yards per game average. The multi-dimensional back was also fourth on the team in receptions and receiving yards, netting 37 catches for 280 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Since 2012, only two Big Ten players had more catches than Ferguson.

He finished his senior season as the only active FBS player with at least 2,500 career rushing and 1,500 receiving yards.

Ferguson is second in Fighting Illini history with 4,474 all-purpose yards. Over his career, he tallied 505 carries for 2,586 yards and 18 touchdowns, 168 receptions for 1,507 yards and eight touchdowns, while posting 21 kickoff returns for 381 yards.

He holds the Illinois record for most career receptions and receiving yards by a running back.

He ranks in the top 10 in school history in career receptions (3rd), rushing yards (6th) and touchdowns (T-7th).

“Staying there through the hard times was rough, but I love Illinois, I bleed orange and blue,” Ferguson said. “They made me who I am as a man and as a player and I forever appreciate that. I take everything I learned back then into this next phase of my career.”

If Ferguson continues the success he had with the Ilini, the next phase of his career will keep him at home in Indianapolis.

He has already taken technical classes such as fluid power/ pneumatics, electrical wiring, welding, industrial maintenance, industrial controls and industrial management. Zielinski said he enjoys that the technical classes are hands-on classes and that he can apply what he learns.

He earned a Certificate of Completion in Industrial Maintenance in May 2015. By the time he graduates high school, he will have 38 college credit hours under his belt. He has not only managed to juggle high school and college classes but also finds time to work in industry to gain experience.

“Moststudents doextracurricular activities such as sports; my activity is going to college and working,” Zielinski said.

Throughout the school year and summer breaks, Zielinski is already utilizing his skills in the workplace.

A few of the exciting opportunities include fabrication and welding of race cars at a race car shop and electrical wiring of the corn maze and pneumatics for the haunted house props at a local pumpkin farm.

Zielinski is also going to Haiti this winter with his church group to help build houses.

Zielinski said he plans to finish his associate degree at JJC and is considering the Southern Illinois University Program at JJC for industrial management and applied engineering.

“Technology camp really helped me figure out what I want to do and be excited about something in life,” Zielinski said.

His mother also expressed her gratitude and is overjoyed at watching the positive transformation her son has made in his academic career since his involvement in technology camp four years earlier.

Adjustable rate mortgage

Dear Dave, Considering all the market volatility, why do banks offer adjustable rate mortgages? How did they come into being?

Anonymous Dear Anonymous, I was in the real estate business in 1978, and that was the year fixed rate mortgages went to 10 percent for the first time in history.

It created all kinds of chaos, but that wasn’t the worst of it all. By 1981, rates were as high as 17 percent. Banks were paying 10 to 12 percent on savings accounts, but they were making just five

percent back from their products.

Essentially, banks began looking for a way to prevent themselves from losing money in the future.

Out of that, the adjustable rate mortgage was born.

With the adjustable rate mortgage (or ARM), banks offer a lower interest rate in the beginning to grab your attention.

Then, when rates adjust they adjust up. It transfers risk to the consumer, and puts the homebuyer in a position where they’re at the mercy of the markets when it comes to the amount of their mortgage payments.

Adjustable rate mortgages are a bad, bad deal. If you currently have one I’d encourage you to refinance now!

By Jason Florin | Columnist In the world of finance, “return on investment” is a measurement of how well your initial investment has paid off in the long-run. We don’t usually apply the same concept to emotional payoffs, but there is one fascinating way that a simple, low-risk investment can produce huge dividends.

One good deed, three happy brains When we engage in an act of kindness, a chain reaction occurs.

To begin with, the person doing the act (holding a door, helping carry groceries, even offering a genuine “thank you”) gets an instant boost in the form of the brain chemicals oxytocin and serotonin. Oxytocin helps reduce stress and promote bonding, while melatonin boosts the immune system and may

As an added bonus, the recipient of your act of kindness experiences an almost identical surge of these positive chemical messages. He or she gets a free power-up because of your behavior.

The feel-good train doesn’t stop here, though. Amazingly, what researchers have found is that a third-party bystander, someone who merely observes the act without any direct involvement, also experiences a similar chemical reward. By simply witnessing a positive act, a total stranger can benefit from your actions.

What this means is that you don’t need to go to extraordinary lengths to make a profound impact. In fact, the smallest act of generosity

What about the times when we’re off our game, when even the thought of a polite smile to a stranger feels like a Herculean task? Yes, there’s an app for that – a simple selfapplication tool that can be used in almost any trying situation.

In the middle of the 20th Century, the field of psychotherapy began changing rapidly.

Traditional Freudian analysis was pushed out in favor of more active and practical ways of making life changes. One of the notable figures from this era is Albert Ellis, who created a cognitive approach to promoting change.

To combine the concepts of the approach into a simple format, Ellis developed an A-B-C model.

Let’s apply the ABC model to one of the most commonly frustrating situations – driving. Somehow the road is always full of hundreds of terrible drivers, plus you. Imagine for a moment that you’re driving, and you feel good. The radio is playing a catchy song, your favorite

drink is sitting right next to you and the road ahead is clear.

Suddenly, you see a car pull up next to you, driving aggressively.

The driver rides the car in front of him, then begins eyeing your lane.

Without warning, he lurches ahead of you, just a few feet separating your cars. You are forced to hit the brakes, and the Zen mood is gone in an instant. You honk your horn, ride his tail for the next halfmile, and when he looks into his rearview mirror, you let him know who’s No. 1.

Ellis labels the activating event, in this case the other driver, as the A in the formula. He calls your reaction (honking, cursing and tailgating) the consequence, or C. We tend to assume that the consequence is a direct result of the event, that A causes C. However, there is a critical piece in between A and C, which is a B, our beliefs. It turns out that not everyone reacts the same way to this situation. The difference is in the way we think about the event. If we say “He has no right; I’ll show him,” we are setting ourselves up for an extreme emotional and behavioral consequence that could end in more harm. On the other hand, if we replace that old thought with a message like “It’s not worth it. Let it go,” our response becomes healthier, which is good for our own

sanity, as well as everyone on the road.

In a world where it’s easy to feel disconnected from one another and to grow discouraged by the struggles we see daily, there is still a way to spread positivity, or at least to avoid a potentially painful negative reaction. Either way, it’s an investment that pays an unbeatable rate of interest.
