Pre-party offers special needs families first look at Crossroads Fest Submitted By Marianne Eisenbrandt | Shorewood Chamber of Commerce The pre-party for families with special needs has been so popular that the event will be held again as part of this year’s annual Shorewood Crossroads Festival.

The festival will open early at 1 p.m. Aug. 5 for an exclusive pre-party designed specifically for families that include children with special needs. Shorewood Crossroads Festival is brought to the community by the Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce. The presenting sponsor is Heartland

Bank. The goal of the pre-party is for families to have a wonderful time in a carnival environment that is a bit slower paced, and without the hustle and bustle of faster moving lines.

Everything on the fest grounds will be available to families attending the special needs preparty, but the event is tailored to the family and the special needs of its children.

Volunteer “friends for the day” will be available to assist in riding the rides or just extending an extra hand.

Families who want to attend the two-hour pre-party are encouraged

to RSVP by July 23 to ensure every child attending has a T-shirt.

The annual festival, which runs Aug. 5-7 at Cene’s Four Seasons Park, will feature all the events, activities and entertainment that festivalgoers have come to expect over the years.

Gov. Bruce Rauner announced last week the creation of the

Illinois School Funding Reform Commission, which will consist of five legislators from each caucus and five educational experts.

Bertino-Tarrant, who served as the regional school superintendent for Will County, said modernizing the state’s “outdated education funding

system” is a top priority.

“Every student should be given the chance to receive a quality education and fulfill their potential,” she said in a statement. “We need to do what is right for our students and fairly fund our schools.”

The Shorewood Democrat added that Rauner’s decision

to create the commission underscores how serious the issue of education funding has become.

“I look forward to working in a bipartisan manner with members of the commission to find solutions which will put needed resources into classrooms throughout my district and across Illinois,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

The Illinois School Funding Reform Commission is expected to start meeting this summer.

Program adds express service to Rock Island line 6-month pilot service starts Aug. 1 Bugle Staff Metra announced plans to launch a six-month pilot program next month designed to enhance midday service on the Rock Island line.

Starting Aug. 1, the commuter rail agency will add express trains to the Rock Island line, which Metra says will speed the trip between suburban stations and downtown Chicago by 15 to 20 minutes.

“Reducing travel times will encourage more people from the south suburbs to take the train,” Metra Executive Director and CEO Don Orseno said in a statement.

“The added inbound express trains are ideal for recreational trips into the city, and the addition of the 1:30 p.m. outbound express will be popular for those working a half day.”

The modified schedule will include three additional inbound express trains and two additional outbound express runs during the midday. The three inbound trains will make all stops from Joliet to Blue Island and then express to the 35th Street/Lou Jones Station or the LaSalle Street Station with the option for passengers to request a flag stop at the 35th Street/Lou Jones.

Three additional inbound trains will originate in Blue Island, make all stops along the Beverly Branch, stop at Gresham and serve 35th Street/Lou Jones with either a flag stop or scheduled stop.

Suburban customers going to a Beverly Branch station and branch riders heading to the suburbs will need to transfer at Blue Island.

The schedule has been designed to make that transfer easy and convenient, according to Metra.

Two midday outbound express trains have also been added. Metra says these trains will offer express service from LaSalle Street to Blue Island and stations further south with the option of flag stops at 35th Street/Lou Jones. Two midday outbound trains will also

accommodate riders along the Rock Island Line’s Beverly Branch. These trains will also make flag stops at 35th Street/Lou Jones. Customers boarding these outbound trains at a Beverly Branch station and who need to travel further south can transfer at Blue Island.

Metra says customers who need to make transfers should tell their conductor on the first leg of their trip so their ticket can be marked appropriately.

In addition, stations marked as flag stops will only allow passengers who notified the conductor to exit the train. Trains will only stop to pick up passengers at flag stops if they are visible to the engineer on the platform.

“This is another example of how

we are identifying opportunities to meet market needs within the bounds of our existing resources,” Orseno said.

According to Metra, the enhanced schedule was driven by the success of the weekend express service added to the Rock Island line last year. The service improvement will operate as a six-month pilot project, and ridership will be evaluated before any decision is made to make permanent changes to the schedule.

The added service is expected to cost approximately $290,000 annually. New timetables will be available shortly on Rock Island trains and stations. The new schedule can also be found at metrarail.com.

Body found in car fire County clerk reminds voters to identified as 31-yearregister, vote early for election old Aurora man Oct. 11 is last day to register The 2016 general election is less than five months away, and Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots is anticipating a large turnout of voters looking to choose the country’s next president.

To preempt the possibility of long wait times on Nov. 8, the county clerk is urging residents to register early and take advantage of all available options when it comes to casting their ballots.

“The general primary in March had a 45 percent voter turnout and the last presidential general election had a 71 percent voter turnout,” Voots said. “If Will County residents register early and utilize all their voting options, it will help

eliminate long lines on election day.”

Registering to vote is as easy as visiting www. thewillcountyclerk.com and clicking on the “Register to Vote” quick link. The register to vote page lists the requirements, and has a link to register online or a link to print out a pdf form.

Registration is open throughout the year except during the 27 days preceding an election and reopens the second day following an election. The last day to register for the general election is Oct. 11, according to the clerk’s office.

By Bugle Staff The Will County Sheriff’s Office released the identity of a body discovered last week inside of a burning vehicle in Joliet Township.

Dental records identified the body as Joseph M. Jaquez, a 31-yearold Aurora man, who authorities

say died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

Officers responded to a report of a car fire near Patterson and Brandon roads just after midnight on July 14. The East Joliet Fire Department extinguished the fire and discovered a body inside the trunk of the 2016 Dodge Charger. Initially, the body was so badly burned that authorities were unable to determine if the victim was male or female.

Following an autopsy, the Will County Coroner’s Office determined that the cause of death was a single gunshot to the head.

Joliet NAACP calls for solidarity amid tragedy Local chapter works to promote inclusion, advance national conversation on race relations

Mike Clark, president of the NAACP Joliet branch, knows all too well that inaction means action. So when it came time to acknowledge the nation’s racial divide and show

solidarity in the wake of recent high-profile shootings, Clark said enough is enough.

The NAACP Joliet branch discussed the current state of U.S. race relations and growing tensions in the country at its July 11 meeting.

Clark said it’s unfortunate how recent tragedies have unfolded, and told the Bugle that the meeting was held to discuss the importance of being engaged and involved in the community.

“Issues can be worked out before they get out of hand,” he said. “We want to be proactive in the community; we want to be engaged to make sure we handle [adversity] properly.”

Clark noted the recent fatal shootings of black men by police officers in Minnesota and Louisiana, as well as the tragedy in Dallas that resulted in the deaths of five police officers. When the Bugle interviewed Clark, the shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that left three police officers dead had not yet occurred.

Clark said that during these times, it’s important to be active, not reactive, in efforts to bridge what he sees as a racial divide.

“We’re troubled by what we saw in Baton Rouge and Minnesota,” Clark said. “It’s a topic we know occurs. We’re very concerned. This type of reaction between citizen

and police officers cannot happen again.” “[We’re] equally as troubled with what happened in Dallas,” he added. “To watch that happen on TV was very disheartening; we’re upset.”

Clark said the NAACP doesn’t condone such actions, nor would they wish for tragedy to occur closer to home.

The Joliet branch engages in a number of various activities to promote greater inclusivity, such as efforts to speak to local lawmakers and local police groups.

“It’s kind of two-fold,” Clark said. “We definitely have to look at the things police have done, and we have to take a look at what

policies must be put in place. It kind of goes both ways.”

Clark said there must be a way to make sure conflicts are deescalated in ways that help resolve issues without violence.

Ultimately, the NAACP Joliet branch intends to find ways to engage the community in ways that advance the national conversation on race relations.

“I’m hopeful that a resolution will come and people will understand that the Black Lives Matter movement doesn’t discredit other groups of people,” Clark said. “I’m hopeful that more people see it less as a minimization of any other demographic group.”

Despite misconceptions people may hold, Clark said the

movement intends to speak to the current state of black America and some of the life experiences held.

The institution of racism is a very real concern, he said, noting the way in which the African American experience differs in comparison to other groups.

Clark said the history of the country helped to build these notions into the system on a number of levels, including criminal justice and housing.

Although progress has been made, Clark said we still have a ways to go. Countering racism, according to Clark, is a task that must be taken across the country.

“I’m hopeful that locally and nationally we’re up for the challenge,” he said.

The board will be tasked with providing a forum to discuss public safety strategies, policy development, recruiting, training needs and community policing concepts, as well as increasing general public awareness.

By Jason Florin | Bugle Columnist It’s the first week of sophomore English class, and my class has been assigned to read “Romeo & Juliet.” The teacher gets the discussion going with a simple question, “Who does Romeo love?” One girl raises her hand and says in a lively tone, “Juliet!”

We all nod our heads in agreement, as the answer seems obvious. But the teacher pauses, turns to the girl, and lets out her best game show buzzer noise: “Ennngght, sorry.” She then pivots toward the board and writes a name: R-O-S-A-L-I-N-E. “Romeo loves Rosaline,” she informs us.

Of course, she was absolutely right.

Although Juliet’s name makes it into the title of the play, much of Romeo’s time is spent lamenting the fact that he can’t be with Rosaline. Yet, he quickly moves on when he meets Juliet, and the divide between their families only makes his passion stronger. Ultimately, all logic goes out the window and (hoping we don’t need a spoiler alert here) the two die for one another.

Breaking the spell Is this what we mean by love? Joy, devotion, intrigue…certainly.

But fleeting attraction, young lust, and (again, not really a spoiler) death by poison and dagger? I hope not. Love is not the fantasy that fairy tales tell us to spend a life chasing.

I love my wife more than any person in the world. I love my family, my friends and even my cats on their better days. But, these relationships didn’t appear with the wave of a wand. They are the product of connection, time, commitment and patience.

Relationships change; they aren’t a fixed state of bliss. The problem begins when a person thinks that love must be a constant thrill ride of passionate perfection.

I won’t be so pretentious as to claim that I have discovered something unique about love that no one else has experienced. What I do know is that holding love up as a mystical ideal can do a lot more harm in our relationships

When former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert reported to federal prison to begin serving a 15-month sentence for illegally withdrawing money to keep an alleged sex abuse victim quiet, he passed through razorwire fences with an annual $28,025 taxpayer funded pension from his six years as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives.

While the Illinois Retired Teachers’ Retirement System moved to immediately revoke Hastert’s pension, following his “guilty” sentence, Illinois law states that a General Assembly member who commits a crime is still eligible for a pension if the crime occurred before or after election to public office. It doesn’t matter that Federal Judge Thomas Durkin described Hastert as a “serial child molester,” he’ll continue to receive his pension. So while Hastert sits in jail, he’ll cash-in more than $35,000.

That’s just not right. Hard-working and law-abiding taxpayers shouldn’t be left to pick up the pension bill for this child predator or any other General Assembly member who abuses the public’s trust and commits a felony against a minor. Something must be done. That’s why I recently filed Senate Bill 0442, so we can remove the pension of General Assembly members who commit a felony against a student or another victim.

I urge the General Assembly to renew discussion and move forward with eliminating Hastert’s pension. It’s time for us to update the law. He confessed to molesting children. He abused the public’s trust. His taxpayerfunded pension needs to be eliminated. Period.

CARE about the environment I am writing to encourage people in our community to join Citizens Against Ruining the Environment – CARE to eliminate the use of disposable plastic shopping bags in Will and surrounding counties.

A major problem with the plastic bags is that only a small percentage of them are recycled, although collection bins are available for plastic bag recycling at some major grocery stores.

Therefore, our landfills are filled with plastic bags and other plastic items that are not recycled.

Plastic bags take 1,000 years to photodegrade (break into smaller and smaller pieces). Every year, 15 billion pounds of plastic are produced in the U.S., but only 1 billion pounds are recycled. Also, because plastic bags use oil in their manufacturing, we are using 12 million barrels of oil to make plastic bags.

Anyone who has driven past farmer’s fields in our area, and frequented natural areas, or in their own community, has seen fields littered and despoiled by plastic bags caught in bushes.

Besides being unsightly, plastic bags kill wildlife when they fly into woods, streams, the Great Lakes and oceans. Small pieces of plastic are eaten by birds and fish, and enter the food chain right into you!

Alternatives to plastic disposable shopping bags include the use of cloth bags, which last years before they fall apart or for store owners to charge customers for paper bags, if they don’t bring their own shopping bags. If the paper bags are made from 100 percent recycled paper, then trees are not cut down to make the paper bags.

For an incentive to customers who bring their own bags, stores could give customers a raffle ticket for a chance to win a store gift card.

JCA grad Kelly Murphy to compete in Rio Olympics

For a United States volleyball player, there is no national professional league.

It isn’t like basketball, where players can reach the NBA or WNBA within the United States.

If you want to continue your playing career in volleyball, you have to go overseas to play and, if you are among the best of the best, you have a chance to represent your country at a few FIVB Tournaments throughout the year.

However, once every four years you have that chance to make the U.S. team and play in the Olympics.

Joliet Catholic Academy graduate Kelly Murphy is one of the few players who is able to represent her country after she was selected to compete for the USA at the Rio Olympics in August.

“It feels pretty good,” Murphy said. “The only way I can really

describe it right now is that I feel really happy and I am really grateful for this opportunity.”

It has taken years of hard work, dedication and the willingness to play overseas and get to spend little time in her home state.

“It has been a long time,” Murphy said of the amount of years of work put in to get to this stage. “There has been a lot of ups and downs and sacrifice, but this feeling makes it totally worth it.”

The past couple years Murphy has been playing in Japan and this fall will be in China. That, coupled with the summer months spent with Team USA, there is little time for anything else.

“I try to get back to the area as often as I can, maybe around three times a year,” Murphy said. “It is a cool opportunity to play a sport and get paid for it. You get to travel and see a lot of places I probably wouldn’t if I didn’t play volleyball.

The negative is that I am away a lot and don’t get to see my family and

Jarosz tabbed AOY; Rodgers leads locals

When Plainfield North’s Zach Jarosz opted to have surgery midway through the basketball season to be ready by midseason for baseball, he had one thing on his mind – a state baseball title.

While the Tigers came up short, the plan worked for Jarosz as he came on strong down the stretch of the season and helped the Tigers win their first state trophy.

That capped a remarkable season career for Jarosz, but his senior year is one for the record books.

That is why Jarosz is the Voyager Media Male Multisport Athlete of the Year.

It all started during the football season, where Jarosz made some incredible catches, including one to help beat Oswego.

For the season he caught 47 passes for 842 yards and 12 touchdowns. The stats don’t tell the whole tale though as Jarosz was named All-State in Class 7A. “He was a game breaker for us and proved to be a very difficult matchup for many teams,” North football coach Tim Kane said after football season. “He also set numerous school records for

receiving yards and TD’s.”

Next up was basketball where Jarosz started and saw extensive minutes as a hard-working player that coach Bob Krahulik praised throughout the season.

His loss midway through the season hurt the team in multiple ways as Jarosz not only brought toughness to the team, he added a valuable body as the Tigers were riddled with injuries by the end of the year and went with a six or seven man rotation at the end of the year.

Then came baseball, where he didn’t start the season but was the leadoff hitter once healthy and batted .356 with nine doubles, two triples and scored 28 runs in 27 games, culminating with the state trip.

Other multisport athletes of the year, by zone, are:

NANA AKENTEN, VALLEY VIEW The Bolingbrook junior was IBCA 3A/4A special-mention All-State and a member of the All-SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division team.

Akenten was a member of the Voyager Media All-Area Basketball third team after he averaged 14 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals

per game, while shooting .460 from floor and .345 behind the 3-point line.

“Nana is one of the most talented kids we have had in our program and is only going to get better,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said after his all-area selection. “He is an outstanding student-athlete who represents everything that is good about BHS.” In the spring, Akenten teamed up with Shawn Showalter, Tanner Banks and Tyler Elmore to advance to the state track and field state finals. The quartet posted a time of 1:30.36 in the 800-meter relay.

JON ARENAS, NILES Arenas was a two-sport all-area member for Maine South. During the football season, he had 56 receptions for 732 yards and eight touchdowns, bringing his two-year totals to 88 catches for 1,362 yards and 14 scores.

On the hardwood, he was a third team all-area selection and Voyager Media All-Star game participant.

He recorded 14.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, in addition to 101 assists and 57 steals.

Golfers enjoying successful summer University of St. Francis sophomore Paul Schlimm (Shorewood, Ill./ Crystal Lake Central) has enjoyed a successful summer on the amateur golf circuit, having become the first USF men’s player to qualify for three major championship events in the same year.

Schlimm, who led the Saints with a 76.5 scoring average in his first year of collegiate competition, fired a 4-under-par 66 to top a 53-player field at the Chicago District Golf Association Amateur Championship Qualifier at Innsbrook Country Club in Merrillville, Indiana, on June 6. Three weeks later, he finished in a tie for third place

among 64 players at the 97th CDGA Amateur Championship at Calumet Country Club in Homewood with rounds of 70 and 71 for a two-day total of 141 (+1). He advanced to the match play round where he reached the quarterfinals.

At the Illinois Open Qualifier at Maple Meadows Golf Club in Wood Dale on June 8, Schlimm shot a 2-under-par 68 to gain a share of sixth place out of 83 players and earn a spot in the 67th Illinois Open Championship – sponsored by the Illinois PGA – to be held at Royal Hawk and Royal Fox Country Clubs in St. Charles from July 25-27.

Schlimm tied for 10th place in

a 76-player field at the Illinois State Amateur Championship Qualifier at Sanctuary Golf Course in New Lenox on June 15 to advance to the 86th Illinois State Amateur Championship at St. Charles Country Club beginning July 19.

Two other Saints turned in strong performances at the 51st annual Joliet Amateur Championship at Wedgewood Golf Course on June 4-5. Senior Huston Gass (Streator, Ill./ Streator) tied for third place among 87 players with rounds of 68 and 71, while junior Jason Chobar (Plainfield, Ill./ Minooka) finished 15th with rounds of 75 and 69.

The Olympics looked like a possibility for Murphy way back in her Joliet Catholic days where she was the 2007-08 Gatorade National High School Volleyball Player of the Year and was the nation’s top recruit by prepvolleyball.com.

She was the AVCA National Freshman of the Year at the University of Florida in 2008 and was a three-time All-American her final three years in college.

Her Team USA career began in 2013, where she competed in several tournaments and helped the U.S. win gold in the Pan American Cup and NORCECA Championship, where she was named MVP and Best Spiker.

Murphy led the team in scoring in both 2013 and 2014 and scored a team-best 157 points in the FIVB World Championships, where the USA took first place.

Despite all her successes, she did not compete in the final two tournaments of the year in 2015 for the U.S., which left her selection to the Olympic Team in doubt.

However, she took the time

to improve her game and she competed in the recently concluded FIVB World Grand Prix, where the U.S. took second.

“I don’t really think it added motivation, I just took it as an opportunity to learn,” Murphy said. “I had a lot of time to make improvements and get stronger.

I was able to improve areas of my game where I might not have known I needed it.”

The 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics begin Aug. 5 and go to Aug. 21. The volleyball schedule has yet to be released.

“I think we’re going to take these few weeks before competition and focus on details of our game,” Murphy said. “We talk a lot about serving and passing being the most important part and can control the match. If we can be solid at that, I feel we will be ready for any team we play. It is the Olympics, so everyone will be bringing their 110 percent effort every match. We go in with a pretty high ranking and that puts a target on our back.

I think we have to be ready every single match no matter who we are playing and give everything we have.”

In the 2012 Olympics the U.S. came in second place, falling to Brazil in the final. It also

lost to Brazil last week in the championship of the World Grand Prix, giving the stars and stripes plenty of motivation to claim the gold.

“There are a lot of positives to come out of a loss like that,” Murphy said of the loss to Brazil.

“It was a good match and it went right down to the end. We can take it as an opportunity to learn how to beat a great team like Brazil.”

At the Olympics, Murphy is just happy to be a part of the team and looking to help out wherever she can in the team’s quest for the gold medal.

“I want to be able to contribute wherever I can,” Murphy said. “If that means I am starting, great. If that means I am on the bench and waiting to come in, I will be ready to do anything I can to help us win that gold medal.”

One thing is almost certain: There will be a lot of people tuned in throughout the Chicagoland area, especially in the Joliet area, who will be tuned in to see their local superstar compete for the nation at the sport’s highest level.

“It is a really cool feeling,” Murphy said of representing JCA and the entire area. “I have gotten

Rodgers claimed three medals at the IHSA state finals, grabbing a pair of second-place finishes, coming up just short of Galesburg’s Josh Eiker in both the 100-meter dash (10.66 seconds) and the 200 dash (22.13).

Rodgers’ medal in the 100 dash is the first-ever for a Porter and his second-place finish in the 200 ties him for second all-time with Ed Flink, who placed second in the 220-yard dash in 1919.

Rodgers’ third medal came as he joined Chris Gargano, Jesse Bustami and Sheldon Snapp to place sixth in the 800-relay with a time of 1:27.67.

Rodgers owns the Lockport honors of the most individual medals with four, as Setta has three individual awards and was part of three relay teams. He also joined Nick Setta and Dan Schrock as the only Lockport athletes with three

medals in one state final.

He leaves Lockport with five medals in his career, making him the second most decorated Porter ever behind Setta, who won six medals from 1995-98.

“Danny often had to guard the post player from the other team,” basketball coach Gene Heidkamp said. “He made up for his size disadvantage with heart and toughness. He was an excellent shooter, passer, and rebounder, and was a great leader for our team.”

Then, after missing the start of the baseball season due to the extended basketball season, he was still able to bat .341 with 11 doubles, 24 RBI and 20 runs scored despite having no offseason.
