By Kris Stadalsky For the Sentinel Shorewood’s Taylor Holland grew up loving Bill Nye the Science Guy. She even considers him an idol. “He did so much to reach out to kids (about science),” Holland said. Holland’sotherfavoritepeopleareStevenHawking, noted physicist and scientist, and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Thanks to her love of science and her professor at the College of DuPage, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Gary Roby, Holland is working with some of the most brilliant minds in science at Fermilab during her summer internship. “I am trying to be like a sponge and soak up as much as I can,” Holland said. Holland is one of three COD students chosen to participate in chemistry research internships during the summer through the College Foundation’s Resource for Excellence program. Holland is at Fermilab, while Ruth Groza of Sleepy Hollow is at Illinois State University and Jeffrey Hosmer of Naperville is at Hope College. Roby applied for the grant because internship opportunities are rarely available to community college students.
