Timber’s brings prom experience to seniors June 23 event provided opportunity for people to enjoy food, live entertainment and games at senior community

For one evening only, The Timbers of Shorewood was transformed into a carnival as guests were invited to take part in its annual Seniors’ Senior Prom.

The June 23 event provided an opportunity for people to enjoy food, live entertainment and games; and students from Joliet Catholic Academy and Joliet West High School helped make it a reality.

“It’s bringing joy to people,” said Faith Ann Varga, executive director of The Timbers of Shorewood.

“That’s what it’s all about.”

A number of memories were created throughout the evening as people dropped in.

A gypsy was telling fortunes, a lion was roaming the grounds and a man was walking on stilts.

“A lot of these seniors never went to a prom,” Varga said.

“Don’t forget in their lifetime, a lot of them didn’t even go to high school. So, this is just showing them, giving them that opportunity that, ‘Oh, my God. This is what a prom is like.’ To bring these kind of memories, I’ve had people to say to me, ‘You know I never went to prom, and here I’m went to a prom.’”

Seniors’ Senior Prom typically brings in between 200 and 350

people.

Mary Duchene, of Shorewood, said she was enjoying all of what the event offered. “[It’s nice] just the people—a lot of people,” she said.

Duchene said she moved into The Timbers of Shorewood three months ago.

This was Duchene’s first time going to a prom.

“They didn’t have [proms when I went to school,]” she said. “We went like a half a day.”

Irene Miller, of Joliet, was seated at a table with some friends enjoying live entertainment. She said she is glad they decided to drop in.

“This is very, very nice,” Miller said.

Miller’s friend, Gen Houck, also of Joliet, agreed.

“It’s interesting—the music, the food and the people,” she said. “[It’s nice] to see the people enjoying themselves.”

Attending Seniors’ Senior Prom was not a first for Miller or Houck.

“We were here last year,” Miller said. “It was really nice—the entertainment, the food. We wanted to see The Timbers [of Shorewood.]

It’s really nice.”

The event has a way of bringing out residents who might not always come out of their living quarters at The Timbers of Shorewood, Varga said.

“They come out for this,” Varga

said. “They may not come out for a lot of things, but they come out for this because it’s all special.

They want to see all the things that we made, all the decorations.”

Varga added that a lot of families drop in for Seniors’ Senior Prom.

“It’s just a lot of fun, a lot of enjoyment,” Varga said. “You want to bring happiness to people, and that’s what we try to do at the Timbers [of Shorewood,]” Varga said.

City reminds about summer water, pool safety An adult should actively watch children at all times while they are in a pool. For infants and toddlers, an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach, providing “touch supervision.”

For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and be free from distractions, such as talking/texting on the phone, socializing, tending to household chores, or drinking alcohol. The supervising adult must know how to swim. Adults should not drop children off at a pool or leave them at a beach without designating a responsible adult to supervise them.

IF YOU HAVE A POOL, INSIST THAT THE FOLLOWING RULES ARE FOLLOWED: � Keep toys away from the pool when the pool is not in use.

� Empty blow-up pools after each use. � No tricycles or other riding toys should be allowed at poolside. � No electrical appliances should be allowed near the pool. � No diving should be permitted in a pool that is not deep enough. � No running should be allowed on the pool deck.

Pool Fences: Children can climb out a window, though a doggy door, or sneak out a door to get to the back yard and a pool or hot tub.

To prevent small children from entering a pool area on their own, there should be a fence that completely surrounds the pool or spa. Combined with the watchful eyes of an adult, a fence is the best way to protect your child and other children who may visit

or live nearby. Also, consider additional barriers such as safety covers and pool alarms.

POOL FENCES SHOULD ALSO: � Be climb-resistant and should not have anything alongside it (such as lawn furniture) that can be used to climb it. � Be at least four feet high and have no footholds or handholds that could help a child climb it. � Have no more than four inches between vertical slats. Chain-link fences are very easy to climb and are not recommended as pool fences. If they must be used, the diamond shape should not be bigger than one and threefourths inches. � Have a gate that is well maintained and is self-closing and self-latching. It should only open away from the pool. The latches

should be higher than a child can reach (54 inches from the bottom of the gate). � For above-ground pools, always keep children away from steps or ladders. When the pool is not in use, lock or remove the ladders to prevent access by children and secure a safety cover.

DIVING: Serious spinal cord injuries, permanent brain damage, and death can occur to swimmers who dive into shallow water or spring upward on the diving board and hit it on the way down.

Keep safe by following these simple common-sense diving rules: � Check how deep the water is.

Enter the water feet first, especially when going in for the first time. � Never dive into above-ground

pools; they are usually not deep enough. � Never dive into the shallow end of a pool. � Never dive through inner tubes or other pool toys. � Learn how to dive properly by taking classes.

RIVER SAFETY Even if a person is just enjoying the river from its bank, the water can be dangerous. River levels can change drastically, depending on rainfall, making passage and maneuverability in the water more difficult. If participating in water activities, a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) should always be worn. Illinois law states that all children younger than the age of 13 must wear a PFD on vessels less than 26 feet in length.

WORDPRESS.COM On this federal holiday, also known as Independence Day, marking the Colonies’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which declared independence from the Great Britain and its king, we thought it would be appropriate to share some fun facts about this historic day. We are already familiar with the fireworks, parades , barbeque and festivities like picnics, fairs, concerts and parties that take place on this day, but there are some things many people don’t know about the Fourth.

1. Congress made Independence Day an official unpaid holiday for federal employees in 1870. In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.

It is believed that the tune comes from the nursery rhyme Lucy Locket. One version of the Yankee Doodle lyrics is “generally attributed” to Doctor Richard Shuckburgh,a British Army surgeon. According to one story, Shuckburgh wrote the song after seeing the appearance of Colonial troops under Colonel Thomas Fitch, V, the son of Connecticut Governor Thomas Fitch.[2] 20. Lockport’s McElligott is 2017 Voyager Media Player of the Year

It wasn’t until the mid-point of the season that Lockport junior Tara McElligott realized what kind of season she was having statistically.

All she did once she realized it was improve and end the season with a .508 batting average, 11 home runs, 17 doubles, a .932 slugging percentage. She scored 56 runs and posted a staggering 73 runs batted in – which is tied for 14th all time in the IHSA for a single season.

“I started watching (the stats) half way through the season. I was looking at my last year’s stats and I had 36 RBI, so I realized what I was putting up was that high,” McElligott said. “At one point, one of my teammates found out I was leading the state in RBI and that was really cool. It was crazy to think about it. I changed my

swing and my approach at the plate and then it was the girls in front of me getting on and doing their jobs. I was keeping everything simple and just seeing the middle of the ball and getting my job done.”

Her accomplishments netted McElligott a IHSA Class 4A first team nod as well as earning her the 2017 Voyager Media Player of the Year honors.

“When I look back on the season, she was a sleeper for a while, then she really got hot in the last half of the season. In that last third of the season, she was on fire,” said Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec. “We had her in the third spot in the order this year and Tara handled the spot well. Some kids in the past have felt the pressure of being the No. 3 hitter and I don’t think that ever crossed her mind. I really felt she stepped up this year on the field SEE SOFTBALL PAGE 8

A catcher by trade, McElligott played her second position of third base the last two seasons before making the move across the diamond to first this year.

“I played third freshman and sophomore year and played first this year. I haven’t played first since eighth grade,” she said. “In the summer, I catch and play third and in college I will catch and play third, but I have always been versatile and my coaches through the years have always told me that knowing different positions will always help.”

Although she still has one more season at Lockport, McElligott has already committed to the University of Illinois-Chicago and she said making that commitment prior to last season helped relax her.

“It was a huge weight off my shoulders,” she said. “I just have to play for myself and my team and we just want to win. I don’t have to impress any colleges. It lets you be a less selfish player because you don’t have to worry about your own stats, you can focus on help-

“Kristen is a four year starter on varsity,” said West coach Heather Suca. “On defense she can cover a ridiculous amount of ground and has a strong, accurate arm. She is a true student of the game. Her speed, aggressiveness, and awareness on the bases put a tremendous pressure on any defense.”

NICOLE BOND BOLINGBROOK The senior catcher was the school’s Female Athlete of the Year and hit .384 with an on base percentage of .420 “She commands a strong presence behind the plate,” said Raiders’ coach Jean Ryan-Moak.

SIDNEY BUDZINSKI JOLIET WEST Junior batted .495 with 9 home runs and a team-best 46 RBI. “Sidney puts the ball in play con-

stantly,” Suca said. “She is a stronger hitter in pressure situations (27 RBI with 2 outs). Sidney is a vocal leader for our team. We are not the same team without her leadership on defense.”

The senior batted .457 with a .542 on base percentage and a 1.085 slugging percentage.

She had 37 hits, including 7 doubles and drove in 17, while scoring 19 runs. She only struck out nine times on the season.

The senior batted .447 for the Porters with 14 doubles, 47 RBI and 35 runs scored.

The senior shortstop batted .409 with a .913 slugging percentage. She clobbered 16 home runs and 10 doubles, driving in 50 runs and scoring 35. She was named to the Class 4A all-state second team.

SARA PETERSON PLAINFIELD CENTRAL Senior left fielder posted a .525 batting average with 63 Hits, 19 doubles, 6 triples and 7 home runs. She hit .441 with runners in scoring position and posted 33 RBI. In left field, she made only one error in 44 chances. She will be playing at Indiana State next year.

KAYLEE PIVEN PLAINFIELD NORTH Junior was a member of the All-Southwest Prairie Conference team. She batted .500 for the season, with a .750 slugging percentage. She hit three home runs and drove in 21.

“She is a true team player and a leader and has a great attitude,” said North coach Kelly Ash.

KATIE POLASKI DOWNERS NORTH The senior second baseman batted .527 with a 1.335 OPS. She drove in 30 runs and scored 19. She was a four-time member of the West Suburban Conference All-Conference team.

“She has been a staple at the top of the Trojan order for

the last four years,” said North coach Eric Landschoot. “She will truly be missed by her teammates and coaches. She is truly a multi-dimensional player, an exemplary student and has been a role model student-athlete.”

ASIA ROBINETTE ROMEOVILLE Spartan shortstop batted .438 on the season, with a .481 on base percentage and a .616 slugging percentage “She is a hard worker who has made spectacular plays at shortstop,” said Romeoville coach Christina Douglas. “In addition, she leads our team in batting.”

KILEY ROBB JOLIET WEST Senior pitcher and third baseman hit .500 on the season with 34 RBI and 2 home runs. She

stole 16 bases and struck out only twice all season. As a pitcher, she was 10-4 with a 1.90 ERA. “Kiley has been a four-year starter, pitching over half of our games each year,” Suca said.

“She is a strong leader for our team. Her work ethic and desire to succeed put her as a top player in the area.

“She has tremendous poise on the mound. Offensively she has been one of the most consistent hitters in our program. She has both power and speed which is a rare combination.”

“Reilly is such a well-rounded great player. She’s a tough out for opponents,” Kinsella said.

GRETA THOMPSON PLAINFIELD NORTH The Tiger junior was SPC Pitcher of the Year, going 11-1 overall and 6-0 in league play with a 1.71 ERA. She batted .442 with 42 hits, including 12 doubles, a triple and a pair of home runs, while driving in 21.

GRACIE VOULGARIS LOCKPORT Junior was a second-team AllState selection in Class 4A. She batted .448 with a .625 slugging percentage with 50 runs scored and 40 driven in. She hit .448 with 11 doubles and 3 home

BIANCA VOZENILEK PLAINFIELD EAST The senior pitcher allowed only 85 hits and struck out 219 batters in 130 innings. She posted a 1.55 ERA and a .872 WHIP. At the plate, she batted .370 with 37 hits, including 6 doubles and 5 home runs and drove in 26 runners.

BEN DEAR BEN, Basically, it’s when you begin to feel the pain financially. Let’s say you have a $1,000 deductible on your homeowner’s policy. If you have an $1,100 issue, just pay the $100 out of pocket and don’t mess with it. But let’s say you have the same deductible and a $2,000 problem. Depending on things like your overall financial situation, the value of the house, and the cost of the insurance policy,

that might just get you to file a claim.

Somehow, lots of people get the idea they can make money on insurance process. You don’t. Insurance companies make money, and consumers pay insurance companies. You don’t make money on insurance in the long-term.

You may have a situation, once in a blue moon, where you come out ahead on a transaction versus what you paid in. But over the scope of your life, you don’t make money on insurance companies.

The point is this: If you turn in the claim, you’re going to experience a rate increase or cancellation somewhere — at some point — that offsets it. I only turn in substantial claims, meaning claims that are far above the deductible.
