NASCAR driver to again honor fallen local soldier

Navy Sergeant Jesse Iwuji, who now drives in the NASCAR Truck Series, will again support the Our Fallen Hero Foundation and the memory of Aaron Toppen at Chicagoland Speedway BY MARK GREGORY Editorial Director

@Hear_The_Beard mark@buglenewspapers.com

In a very short amount of time by industry standards, Jesse Iwuji has risen up the ranks of the NASCAR circuit. From a dream and a decision to follow that dream in January of 2014, he has made his way to the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, where he drives the No. 34 Chevy Silverado for Reaume Brothers Racing. Iwuji did not dedicate himself to his dream on a race track, he actually came up with it on a ship – a Naval warship at that. When he decided, Iwuji had just completed his second deployment and was thinking of what to do with his life after the Navy. Iwuji entered the Naval Academy from Hebron High School in Carrolton, Texas where he was recruited to play football. A defensive back for the Midshipmen, he earned four varsity letters, playing on teams that combined for a 35-18 record, went to four bowl games and won the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy each of his four seasons. He graduated from the Naval Academy and became a surface warfare officer. “After my second deployment, I had a crazy idea that I wanted to be a professional race car driver, so I started to pursue it. I don’t come from a racing family and I didn’t know where to go or what to do, but I just wanted to find a way in there,” he said. “I met a guy at a car show randomly that was racing late model stock cars and he let me test with his team and I was able to find some money here and there and I started to race with his team, I found sponsors and I started my own business to help fund the team.” Iwuji competed in his first race in April of 2015, raced NASCAR K&N Series all of 2016 and 2017 and the ARCA Series in 2018 and is NASCAR Truck Series this year. And it gets better from there. “We just got approval to move up to the NASCAR Xfinity Series and as soon as we get bigger sponsors, we will be able to make that happen,” he said.

As a member of the United States Armed Forces, Iwuji is using his rise through the NASCAR ranks as a way to bring awareness to fallen heroes. “I am just a regular guy trying to do cool things, but I now have a platform to bring awareness to different organizations and different causes,” he said “When we can use my platform to do that, it is awesome and it is the right thing to do and in the end, when you put good into the universe, the universe puts good back into you. That is what it is all about.” Iwuji will race this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway in the Friday night truck race and will be honoring Mokena native Aaron Toppen, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2014 at the age of 19. Iwuji raced last year in the ARCA Series in memory of Toppen and the Our Fallen Hero Foundation started by his mother, Pam. Last year after the race, Iwuji was able to present Pam with the hood of the car with the foundation logo proudly displayed. “We met Jesse last year and it was an immediate friendship,” Pam said. “We would be happy to work with him as long as he will have us.” Iwuji sees no reason to stop his relationship with the Toppen family or the foundation, and he will again show his support in the Friday night truck race. “We are using the day to honor Aaron and his life and we are bringing awareness of him and our military and what our service members are doing and that they risk their lives every day to insure our freedom. They are out there doing what they are doing for us,” Iwuji said. Pam said Aaron died doing what he loved and that the military was all he wanted to do, following in the footsteps of his grandfathers. “He was going to be army and was going to be infantry and there was no way around that,” Pam said. “He enlisted before he left high school and had to wait until he was out.” After graduation, Aaron went to Fort Benning, Ga. for boot camp. He celebration prior to his departure gives added significance between Pam and Chicagoland Speedway. “It was right before he left, he came

Aaron was killed by friendly fire after deploying late with his unit in March of 2014. “In February of 2014, he was supposed to deploy and, unfortunately, my husband died and he was in Mokena burying his dad while his unit got on the airplane,” Pam said. “He caught up with them in March and it was the end of May I was on a fishing trip in Minnesota and I got a text message saying he was chosen for a special mission. He was excited to be chosen but little did I know I would come back from my trip and the next night at 11:59, I got the door knock.” After Aaron’s death, Pam and her daughters decided to pay it forward and start the Our Fallen Hero Foundation in Aaron’s memory. “In five short years, we have been able to send 10 scholarships to the Pat Tillman Foundation, support Fisher House, Puppies Behind Bars, the Lincoln-Way Special Rec,” Pam said of some of the charities the foundation has helped. “Our community has been great support and I don’t know how we would do it without our faith, family and friends. “To be able to pay it forward and remember Aaron’s life and remember all those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom gives us great pleasure.”

Benet s Abby Casmere helps Redwings to a state title and earns Player of the Year honors BY MATT LE CREN For the Bugle

@BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com Faster, higher, stronger. The motto of the modern Olympic Games is an apt description of the performance Benet soccer star Abby Casmere and her teammates gave this season. Casmere, a four-year starter, added muscle in the off-season and was stronger than ever. The senior forward’s versatile skill set, chiefly her ability to postup defenders like a center does in basketball and her accurate passing, allowed speedier teammates like Jamie Cibulka and Mia Tommasone to wreak havoc. As a result, the Redwings soared higher than ever. Casmere tallied a team-high 20 goals to go with seven assists, including one on Cibulka’s game-winning goal in the Class 2A state championship game, to lift Benet to its first state championship in girls soccer. For her efforts, Casmere is the Voyager Media 2019 Girls Soccer Player of the Year. “It’s crazy,” Casmere said after Benet’s 2-1 double-overtime win over Wauconda in the state title game. “I just wanted to do whatever I can to help the team because this is what we wanted from the beginning and look where we are.” Casmere, a Miami of Ohio recruit, never envisioned the success she would have, let alone leading the Redwings to the top, when she was a freshman. Benet struggled to

finish above .500 that season and Casmere was a mere role player in the midfield. But she improved every year while playing a variety of positions. Benet coach Gerard Oconer switched her to center forward this season and Casmere exploded for six goals in the first five games of the season. Opponents began double-teaming Casmere, who responded by regularly finding her open teammates. The Redwings went 24-31, setting a program record for most wins in a season along with a school-record 107 goals. “I think working together and, for the second straight year, most wins in a season. “I think working together, that’s what you’ve got to do,” Casmere said. “Up top, you can’t just try to take it yourself because you’re not going to make 100 percent of the shots you take and you’ve got to have trust in your outside forwards. “I have to trust my outside forwards, my center midfielders and the outside backs and center backs if they go forward.” That unselfish attitude led to many good times for the Redwings and nightmares for opponents. “That was the key,” Oconer said. “Because obviously with her talent, (opponents) are going to collapse on her and so that’s going to free up everybody else.” That made Benet’s attack all the more potent, as defenders didn’t know whether Casmere would

She’s gotten way better at that this season.” Though she was determined to improve her game, Casmere didn’t foresee herself scoring 20 goals. “Personally, no,” Casmere said. “I set the goal for myself that I wanted to top last year’s goal (total). “I think I had 11 last year and I told myself at the beginning of the

season I wanted to top that, but I didn’t think that I’d have the success that I’ve had.” Locals on the All-Area team are:

Hauter’s heroics lift Crest Hill past Whiteford BY DRAKE SKLEBA For the Bugle

@BugleNewspapers sweditor@buglenewspapers.com Crest Hill Sports Huddle right fielder

Joe Hauter just went up to the plate, “hoping to hit the ball” in last Friday’s wild Crest Hill DuPage River Conference Pony League Tournament championship game.

Hauter, stepped to the plate in a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning. Teammate John O’Brien, who had walked to leadoff the inning, represented the tourney-championship, winning ru, on third. After O’Brien walked catcher Nick Perez (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) ripped a double with O’Brien stopping at third. Hauter sent Sports Huddle nation into a frenzy when he ripped a line single to center scoring O’Brien with the game-winner. The 7-6 DRC Pony Tournament Championship victory over Whiteford Grunt Style was the second consecutive league tournament walk-off victory for Crest Hill, walking off 8-7 against Belmont’s Lawson Garage in Thursday night’s semifinal. “Initially, I was just in shock after we had won the game,” Hauter added. “Then I it was an absolutely awesome feeling.” “Whiteford is really, really good and I was surprised and happy, that we beat them tonight for the championship,” O’Brien said. “Scoring the winning runs was just a really, really, awesome feeling. First time ever for me, winning a championship.” Friday night’s, tourney championship game, featured the top two squads in the DRC. Regular season champion, Crest Hill (29-1), took home the season crown by four games, over Whiteford (19-6).

The 29-1 record for Crest Hill sets a team record preiously held by the 36-3 team in 1990. That team posted a winning percentage of .923, which was also surpassed this season with a .966 clip. Whiteford handed Crest Hill, it’s only loss of the season 3-2. Crest Hill won the other three, regular season meetings, 7-6, 6-5 and 6-2. “I want to tip my hat to the Whiteford kids and their coaches,” legendary Crest Hill manager Joe Marshall said. “They gave us our only loss of the season and battled us in every other game. Another one-run win tonight. What a nail-biter.” Each team picked up an unearned run, in the top of the first inning. and Whiteforf took a 3-1 lead, on a clutch two-out, two-run single, from catcher, Jason Zigmont (2-for-2, BB, 3 SB) Crest Hill tied the game at three on RBI singles from tournament MVP Colin Sanchez (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and O’Brien, in the bottom of the fifth. “It was so exciting to win the Championship. We all were jumping up and down and screaming,” Sanchez said. “It was a real honor for me to be named MVP. I had a great season and really enjoyed it.” With the bases loaded and one out laid down a perfect squeeze bunt scoring Nolan and when Tyrell threw wildly to first, Sanchez scored for a 5-3 Crest Hill lead.

“We work on bunting every day,” Marshall said. “What a beautiful, picture-perfect bunt by Nick to get us two runs. Sadly, bunting has turned into a lost art in baseball.” With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Crest Hill grabbed the lead on a Whiteford miscue. After two outs, Whiteford again pulled even with Crest Hill on back-toback doubles by Jake Jean (2-for-4,2B) and Ryan Catalano (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) to tie the game, at 6-6, in the top of the seventh. Whiteford had swiped nine bases and with two outs, in the top of the seventh, they tried for No. 10. Catalano, who had tied the game with the double, tried to steal third. Perez came up with his best throw of the night shooting down Catalano at third on the tag by O’Brien to end the inning. “I was really nervous but I got off a good throw to get Catalano out at third to end the seventh,” Perez said. “It felt amazing to see Joe’s hit win us, the championship.” O’Brien’s walk, Perez’s huge double and Hauter’s magic gave the venerable Marshall another DVC Pony League Tournament Championship.

FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF WILL COUNTY

Preserve seeking dogs to appear in calendar Funds raised from sales of calendar will benefit the Will County Humane Society BY BRIAN STANLEY Bugle Staff

@BugleNewspapers bstanley@buglenewspapers.com Any canines who are regulars at the Hammel Woods Dog Park might want to strike a pose. The Forest Preserve District of Will County is seeking dogs to appear in a 2020 calendar that will be sold to benefit the Will County Humane Society. The humane society, the oldest no-kill shelter in the county, finds new homes for hundreds of dogs each year. Dogs using the other five dog parks in Will County are also eligible to model for the calendar. “Our partnership with the Forest Preserve District is a great way for neighbors to help one another out by spreading awareness of both missions,” said Will County Humane Society shelter manager Malorie Ernst. “Both organizations have a genuine impact on our community and take pride in the work they do to better our community and the animals in it.” “The calendar is a win-win project for both us and the Will County Humane Society,” said Ralph Schultz, chief operating officer for the Forest Preserve District. “Our

public loves its dogs and our dog parks, and we’re happy to offer a way to highlight the pets of our dog park patrons while also helping to support a Will County organization that does such good within the community. We hope visitors to our dog parks will not only submit their dogs’ photos for a chance to be included in this special initiative, but that they’ll also generously support the Humane Society by purchasing a calendar or two.” Dogs who are candidates to appear in the calendar must have a valid permit for the dog parks, which requires them to be current on rabies vaccinations. Dogs must be socialized to humans and other dogs and be able to follow some basic commands during the photo shoot. Information for submitting photos of eligible dogs is available

Calendars can be preordered through Oct. 20 at willcountydogs. org and will arrive in late November. $10 of the $15 cost will benefit

the Humane Society. “We run solely on the generous donations and devotion from our community,” Ernst said. “Our facility does not receive funding from the government. This means every item and every dollar donated is imperative to our functionality. Every act of kindness helps the homeless animals in our care.”

Gov signs legislation enhancing protections for immigrant families New laws ban immigrant detention centers, prohibit local law enforcement from ICE coordination, Makes undocumented students eligible for MAP Grants Making good on his promise to make Illinois a welcoming state for all, Governor JB Pritzker signed three pieces of legislation Friday to protect Illinois’ immigrant community amid growing attacks from the federal government. “Illinois is and always will be a welcoming state,” said Gov. JB Pritzker. “Let me be perfectly clear: the state of Illinois stands as a firewall against Donald Trump’s attacks on our immigrant communities. In the face of attempts to stoke fear, exploit division, and force families into the

shadows, we are taking action. We will not allow private entities to profit off of the intolerance of this president. We will not allow local police departments act as an extension of ICE. And we will ensure that every student in this state who wants to go to college should be able to do so without saddling themselves with debt for the rest of their lives.”

HOUSE BILL 2040 Private Detention Facility Moratorium Act HB 2040 bans immigrant deten-

tion centers in the state of Illinois, halting the proposed federally-run center in Dwight, Ill. Specifically, the bill prohibits state, county and local governments from entering any agreement or making any financial transactions with a private detention facility, with an exception for contracts with providers of ancillary services such as medical or food services. This makes Illinois the first state in the nation to ban private civil detention centers, after the state already banned private criminal detention centers. HB 2040 takes effect immediately.

HOUSE BILL 1637 Keep Illinois Families Together Act

HB 1637 prohibits local law enforcement agencies from engaging in federal immigration enforcement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While local law enforcement agencies in 21 states, including Wisconsin, participate in the 287(g) Program — an ICE program that allows local law enforcement officials to identify and remove undocumented residents from the U.S. — Illinois now statutorily prohibits participation. This bill ensures witnesses of all backgrounds can come forward and report crime to their local police. HB 1637 takes effect immediately.

HOUSE BILL 2691 Retention of Illinois Students and

Equity (RISE) Act HB 2691 allows undocumented and transgender students to received MAP grants and institutional aid at public institutions. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission estimates that approximately 3,500 additional students will qualify for a MAP grant as a result of this new law. While citizenship status and registration in selective service are required for federal financial aid, any Illinois resident is now qualified for state financial aid. The bill also allows students who used MAP grants to help pay for at least 75 credit hours to continue receiving scholarships rather than cut them off until they attain junior status. HB 2691 takes effect immediately.
