Residents intend to bring craft brewery to town Owners of Will County Brewing Company hope to open near Rt. 52 and River Road

A craft brewery could be on tap for the Village of Shorewood as early as this summer.

The owners of Will County Brewing Company appeared before the Shorewood Village Board of Trustees at a May 23 meeting where officials reviewed a measure that could create a Class-K liquor license permitting craft beer sales.

Representing the proposed development at the meeting was Jamie Albert, president of Will County Brewing Company.

“We’re looking for approval of this license to be able to manufacture craft beer and to have a small tap room in front to be able to sell our beer that we serve,” he said.

Nationally, the industry for craft breweries has grown over the years. Locally, such businesses are coming on line in the City of Joliet.

“We’re hoping to be the first, obviously,” Albert said. “We’re all Shorewood residents, and we’re looking to have it in our hometown.”

Albert said the board’s approval

would help the trio in bringing on line their first craft brewery.

“We all started off as home brewers as most breweries do,” he said. “If they get a good response from their beers and win some at competitions, a lot of them open up breweries.”

The owners intend to focus only on craft beer sales when their establishment opens. They will not be seeking a license to serve food.

It is to be located in a shopping plaza near Savarino’s Pizza. At 2,700 square feet, the establishment will include a room for the manufacturing of craft beer and a front room for tasting.

Layout of the bar area is still to be determined. The owners anticipate being able to serve 50 patrons.

“Based on our capacity, we’ve got our equipment that’s coming,” Albert said. “We have a three and a half barrel system coming. We have four fermenters coming, so we’ll be able to have four beers fermenting at one time. Once those are emptied and kegged, we can serve those and have four new ones brought on.”

“It’s more about it’s an art,” Albert said of their business philosophy. “The word craft, we take seri-

ously. It’s no different than a chef having an artist in a restaurant. We make artisan beers. That’s what our focus is.”

Now in its 11th year, this self-guided garden tour was initiated by John and Betsy Sullivan in memory of their grandson who was in hospice and palliative care from the time he was 10 months old until he died at 11 years old in 2012.

Avid gardeners themselves, the Sullivans are still the primary organizers of this event which benefits the pediatric program of Joliet Area Community Hospice (JACH).

JACH is one of just a few hospice organizations in the area to provide pediatric hospice and palliative care program.

The pediatric program serves terminally ill children ages 0-21.

It provides unique, individualized care for every child so they can live peacefully and in comfort along with care and support for their entire family.

The pediatric palliative care program provides comprehensive and specialized care for children coping with a life limiting illness who are undergoing curative treatments for their disease.

State’s Attorney to host blood drive June 22 Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow is partnering with Heartland Blood Centers and local mom Jennifer Babec to host the Taylor Babec Community Blood Drive from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 22.

The Taylor Babec Community Blood Drive will be held in the parking lot directly south of the former First Midwest Bank building at 25 N. Ottawa Street in downtown Joliet. The building currently is home to the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and Will County Specialty Courts, both of which are

operated by the State’s Attorney’s Office. Heartland’s mobile coaches will be parked inside the middle lot during the Blood Drive.

The location is convenient for employees who work nearby at the Will County Courthouse, Joliet City Hall and the Joliet Police Department, all of which are less than one block from the blood drive.

Downers Grove North’s Swanson leads 2017 Voyager Media All-Area Soccer Team

There was a time not long ago when Abby Swanson wasn’t thinking about becoming an AllState soccer player.

All she wanted to do was be able to play the sport again.

The Downers Grove North midfielder suffered a torn ACL her freshman year and spent that season on the bench as the team manager.

“My world flipped over a little bit, my soccer world at least,” Swanson said. “I didn’t know what I was going to be coming back.”

Swanson is one of the best players in the state and she is just scratching the surface of her potential. She followed up a solid sophomore season by leading the Trojans in goals and assists, part of a larger group effort that sparked Downers North to the

greatest season in school history.

Swanson tallied 13 goals and 18 assists and led the Trojans to a school-record 20 wins and a fourth-place showing in the Class 3A state tournament. Oh, yes, she also was the first Trojan in more than 15 years to be named AllState.

For those efforts, Swanson is the Voyager Media Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“She’s a soccer player,” Downers North coach Brian Papa said.

“She loves the game. If I could ever get her to relax and quit beating herself up, she’s going to be one helluva soccer player because she’s got the instincts that you want in a leader.

“Right now she’s a junior. Once she learns composure, there’s no stopping her. That’s what I’m teaching her.”

who took over the program this year, taught all of his players to aim high. That was helpful even to a player the caliber of Swanson, who surprised herself by earning a starting spot as a sophomore.

“To be starting already sophomore year was kind of crazy,” Swanson said. “So for me I was like, ‘I made it back,’ and that (level) was what I thought (my ceiling) was.

“But over this past year I went into club and I wanted to keep

getting better, so (becoming AllState) was a personal goal for this season and it happened, so it was pretty cool.”

A lot happened for the Trojans this year and Swanson was a major catalyst. They earned the No. 1 seed in their own sectional and avenged one of their two regularseason defeats when they beat Lyons 2-1 on penalty kicks in the final.

Swanson likely saved the season when she tied the game on a penalty kick with 14:58 left in the second half, then converted

the clinching penalty kick in the shootout.

That gave the Trojans their first sectional title, but Swanson wasn’t done. She was one of five players to make penalty kicks during a 1-0 supersectional upset of traditional power Naperville North, a team that had 10 Division I players.

“I think she brings an intensity that we really need,” Downers North junior goalkeeper Grace Stevenson said. “Sometimes we just kind of need her and she’s able to step in and be like, ‘Hey, guys, we need to come out hard this half, we need to step it up.’

“I think she really helps build up the energy on the field.”

There is a lot of energy in Swanson, particularly in her powerful right leg, which can launch hard shots from 40 yards out or more. Papa is constantly trying to get the unselfish Swanson to shoot more and pass less when she sees an opening.

“That’s been a focus from the coaches to me is to kind of keep getting my head up and look for the shot,” Swanson said. “I tend to pass a lot and spread the wealth a little bit.

“But I need to take my chances too because we just need the ball in the back of the net, one way or the other. I wish it was easy.”

Succeeding like the Trojans did this season is not easy. The program had one only one regional title before this year and the fourthplace trophy is North’s first piece of hardware.

Swanson enjoyed every minute of it.

“It’s playing a sport that you love with your best friends,” Swanson said. “How much better can it get than that?”

How much better can Swanson get? The honors student already has committed to Loyola, but she won’t rest on her laurels with one

more high school season left.

“I’m so excited,” Swanson said.

“I’ve been talking to (the Loyola) coaches and that will be the next challenge and adventure. I’m going to stay hungry.”

HAILEY ARLIS MINOOKA Senior forward tallied 19 goals and led the Indians to their first conference championship in 36 years. The four-year starter was a three-sport athlete, also starring in golf and basketball.

MEGAN BREIER PLANFIELD NORTH Senior forward had a teamleading 18 goals and 16 assists. Will play for Ohio Northern. “Megan has outstanding speed and ability with the ball at her feet, which makes her very difficult to defend,” Plainfield North coach Jane Crowe said. “She often draws two or three defenders at a time and still manages to get to the goal.”

OLIVIA BULL DOWNERS NORTH Junior defender was Honorable Mention All-Sectional selection.

Had five assists and scored the game-winning goal in sectional semifinal victory over York.

SHANNON COUGHLIN PLAINFIELD EAST Senior forward scored in 16 of 22 games this year and finished with 29 goals and eight assists. AllSouthwest Prairie honoree.

ERIN FLYNN, BENET Versatile junior had two goals and a team-leading nine assists while playing forward and fullback. All-Sectional and All-East Suburban Catholic pick. “Erin is a dynamic outside back who is able

to shut down opposing forwards 1 versus 1,” Oconer said. “When Erin played forward, she was able to use her crafty skills to consistently beat defenders off the dribble to create scoring opportunities for teammates.”

ERIN GRAEFEN PLAINFIELD CENTRAL Senior forward had 10 goals and five assists. “Erin is fantastic technically, tactically, and in the air which enables her to play any central position at an extremely high level,” Planfield Central coach Ken Schoen said.

KATIE GESIOR, BENET Senior midfielder was a fouryear starter who had 12 goals and eight assists this season to earn All-Sectional and All-East Suburban Catholic Conference honoree.

“Katie excels with the ball at her feet and is lethal on free kicks,” Benet coach Gerard Oconer said.

“She has worked tirelessly to improve some aspect of her game each of the past four seasons and is an exceptional leader.”

JAMIE HANSEN LOCKPORT Senior defender was a two-time All-Stater and four-time Southwest Prairie selection. Had one goal and two assists this season and 10 goals and 11 assists for her career.

“Jamie has great speed, size, touch and an ability to read plays before they happen,” Lockport coach Todd Elkei said. “She has been the anchor of our defense for the past four years.”

More postseason awards for softball team The honors keep coming in for members of the record-breaking 2017 University of St. Francis softball team, which turned in a school-best .860 winning percentage by going 43-7 this past spring. The latest recognition comes from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Earning NFCA NAIA All-American Second-Team distinction was junior pitcher Morghan Dieringer (New Lenox, Ill./ LincolnWay West). She also claimed NFCA NAIA All-Great Lakes Region First-Team honors along with teammates Ally Balandis (Burbank, Ill./ Reavis) and Kayla Garcia (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech). Junior infielder/outfielder Brooke Karraker (Kankakee, Ill./ Herscher) was a second-team choice.

Dieringer, named a first-team all-american pick by the NAIA

last week, went 26-6 with four saves and a 0.99 earned run average. Ten of her 26 wins were of the shutout variety. She also struck out 236 batters in 205 innings of work.

The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Pitcher of the Year and a CoSIDA College Division Academic AllAmerica Second-Team choice, as well, Dieringer earned Top 10 NAIA national rankings in three categories, including the No. 8 spot with her 26 wins and 0.99 earned run average. She was also sixth-best with her four saves.

Among St. Francis singleseason records, Dieringer’s .813 winning percentage established a new top mark, while her 236 strikeouts now rank second and her 26 wins third.

Garcia, the CCAC Freshman of the Year, led the Saints in home runs (11), walks (32), on-base

percentage (.503) and slugging percentage (.674). The first baseman was also third in runs batted in (47) and doubles (12), while hitting .361 on the season.

Balandis, a junior catcher/ third baseman, gained runnerup honors on the team in three categories: hits (66), doubles (13) and runs batted in (56). She also totaled 40 runs scored and hit .365, the third-best mark on the squad.

Karraker ranked high on both the team and national charts during her junior season. She finished ninth in the nation in runs per game (1.18) and 15th in runs batted in per contest (1.14).

For the Saints, she led the team in runs (59), runs batted in (57), hits (69), doubles (19) and triples (five), while ranking second in batting average at .369.

The NAIA Postseason Coaches’ Poll found the Saints placing

12th in the nation after advancing to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round for the second time in three years. Head coach Amanda Jensen’s club also claimed its first-ever CCAC Tournament title and its first regularseason crown since 2001.

• Ranking in the top 20 nationally in no less than six statistical categories during the 2017 season, University of St. Francis junior pitcher Morghan Dieringer (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way West) has been recognized yet again, this time earning NAIA Softball First Team All-American status. She becomes just the fourth player in the 38-year history of USF’s program to earn the first-team distinction.

Dieringer also becomes the first player since the 2005 season to gain all-american credentials and the first player since Janet Abramic in 1997 to be named to

the first team. A total of 20 players make up the first team.

The honor comes on top of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and CoSIDA College Division Academic All-America Second Team distinction, which Dieringer earned earlier this year.

Dieringer’s highest ranking came in the save category, where her four saves ranked sixth in the nation. She was also eighth in both wins (26) and earned run average (0.99), where she allowed only 29 earned runs in 205 innings pitched.

Among her 27 games pitched, 26 were complete-game efforts with 10 of those going for shutouts.

Other top rankings included her 205 innings pitched (15th), .189 opponents’ batting average (16th) and 4.81 hits allowed per game (19th).

Time frame for buying a leased building DEAR DAVE, I’ve operated my own small business for a couple of years. In that time, I’ve been leasing the building that houses my company. How do you know when the time is right to buy a place and stop leasing?

JAMES DEAR JAMES, I’m a big fan of leasing the first few years after starting your own business. It’s even better if you can work out of your home, but I understand that’s not always practical.

In my mind, you should only buy a building when you have a good idea what your building needs will be from a solid track record. Growth is a good thing, but in some cases you may want to hold off buying a building if you’re growing too rapidly. Don’t make the mistake of focusing too much on real estate and not enough on generating revenue and managing your growth intelligently. You would also want to make sure you’re going to be in anything you buy for a while, because you don’t want to be stuck with a residual value. A residual value is the remaining value of an asset after it has been fully depreciated.

In the first three to five years of starting your business, you should lease. After that, you can choose to lease with an option to buy or, in the right situation, buy a building — debt-free, of course.

My parents have been generous enough to pay for most of my school expenses, and they let me live at home while I complete my degree.
