Paws on 66 Pet Rescue Day in Joliet

A rainy morning pushed the event back by about an hour but couldn’t stop man’s best friend from taking over the streets of downtown Joliet on Saturday, June 9.

Chicago Street hosted vendors and local pet rescues during this year’s Paws on 66 Pet Rescue Day. This was the second year for the event, sponsored Hawk Joliet Subaru and organized by Safe Pets for Joliet and. Organizers said the event brings out rescues, potential families, and vendors so people can meet dogs, adopt, and network.

“The most important reason for having an event like this is to educate people that there are very good choices to bring in a family pet,” said Peggy Grandahl of Paws Crossed Rescue Resource, who volunteers with Safe Pets for Joliet.

“You can adopt from rescues or shelters, or there are always good quality, responsible breeders, and those breeders never sell their dogs to pet shops or brokers. So, right here you have dogs who are being given a second chance. Every dog that’s adopted out of an event like this makes room for another dog that can have their life saved.”

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said events like this can help save an animal’s life.

Glasgow said his office takes seriously their job to put away those who may abuse pets, though it’s a sometimes a challenge.

“My job is to prosecute in animal cruelty cases, and one of the things we found out is that there’s just a lack of training out in the field for people who are charged with investigating animal cruelty,” he said.

Glasgow said the June 19 and 20 the county, along with the ASPCA, will host a seminar at Joliet Junior College on animal cruelty investigations.

“We’re really serious about it, we want the community involved,” Glasgow said. “If you ever do see

incidents of animal cruelty, please call. We’ve got a bill in Springfield right now on leaving a dog in a hot car. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of knuckleheads down there who can’t see their way through to vote for it yet, but there’s a dozen other states that have signed that bill into law.”

While there is no statewide law on leaving animals in a hot car, Joliet has a local ordinance that

makes the practice illegal.

Glasgow said his office is also working to crack down on puppy mills.

In addition to adoptions, the free event featured a pet blessing, a K9 demonstration from the Plainfield Police Department, an appearance by Tommy Hawk of the Chicago Blackhawks, and performances from Team Zoom Stunt Dogs.

Shorewood starts process for Lake Michigan water Current well system not a feasible long-term solution for village

The village of Shorewood has taken the first step in the process to ditch well water and start drawing from Lake Michigan.

Last month, the board approved a $15,000 payment to Edward J. Baits and Associates to conduct an appraisal of 17 miles of ComEd easement that the village would utilize to construct a transmission main to pull water from the lake. The village is looking to enter a reciprocal agreement with ComEd, like one that the utility granted to the village of Oak Lawn to modernize their regional water network.

In May, Trustee Anthony Luciano gave an update on the plan to switch to Lake Michigan water to members of the Citizens Advisory Committee.

“We start out with a loan application which the engineers have to put together for us… The sec-

ond part of it is site inspections of where pipelines are going to go,” Luciano said.

The trustee added that this is the first step in a long process.

“Here’s where we’re at right now: all this planning and all these surveys and everything, believe it or not, are not going to end until 2020. At that point, hopefully we’ll be able to move forward with that,” Luciano said. “Now, we still have to negotiate with [ComEd] on using their easement, we still have to get contractors and everything to build it, and who knows what will happen. If you’re building a home, you know all the problems that can go with it. Picture 17 miles of pipeline, with part of it going through private properties and streets. There could be some kinks in it. Hopefully, it will go right. But it’s almost impossible to have everything go perfect.”

Luciano added that so far, the process is moving smoothly.

Public Works Superintendent Chris Drey said the timeline to

There was a brief delay on removal of spoil through the ComEd easement. An agreement was eventually struck that the spoils can stay on site provided

they are not contaminated and engineered to not hold water.

“Most of it is farm land, there’s only a couple spots that are wetlands where we’re going to have to work with communities, so are the communities going to give us a permit right away. So, there are definitely things that are out of our control,” Drey said.

As far as residential water, the eventual move to Lake Michigan water will cost more. However, Drey noted, switching is currently the only sustainable long-term option for the local water supply.

“It will definitely cost more, but, the difference will be, what we’ll have is a pipeline coming down here,” Drey said. “If we were to stay on wells, which is not feasible at all for the Will County area anywhere, the Illinois State Water Survey says that if any of us put a 6 million gallon draw on the deep aquafer, we will change the whole playing field for everybody within the next 10 to 15 years. So, having this approach will definitely cost more. But, if we were to build another treatment plant like we

Public works projects underway Shorewood approves tree removal, water meter projects

Dead and dying ash trees along Shorewood’s streets will be removed and replaced this year, following approval last month by the Village Board. In May, the board approved a $100,000 payment for trees that are being ravaged by the invasive emerald ash borer.

Public Works Superintendent Chris Drey said the village started the project to remove and replace trees back in 2014. This current project will again use The Fields on Caton Farm of Crest Hill for replacement trees.

“We’ve done some substantial removal in the last year,” Drey said The village has $300,000 budgeted

for tree removal, with $100,000 approved for this newest contract.

Drey said the replacement will cost about $287 dollars per tree, planted, for a total of 348 trees covered with this payment.

“It’s a starting point. We’ve got a lot of work, a lot of trees to replace in the Meadows, up and down Brookshore,” Drey said. “So, we’ve got some substantial spots where we could utilize this.”

Drey said during last year’s plantings, about 12 trees did not take. However, he said The Fields replaced those trees, noting that the company works in other communities and come highly recommended.

The board also approved a purchase for a water reader and remote reader, in an amount not to exceed $150,000. “We’ll start in River Oaks subdivision, which is where our oldest area is,” Drey said. “We’ve got some meters on our unread list that, as we drive by, are not talking back to the truck, so

we’ll plan for those to be replaced.

Then once River Oaks subdivision is done, we’ll analyze it. We do offer the meter change out appointments Monday through Saturday.”

Drey said the water meter replacement project is nearly 70 percent complete. The $150,000 should cover replacements for 250 to 300 homes.

Drey said if the village stayed on the well system, they could have to build up to $40 million in new wells, plus operations and maintenance, versus a single pipe and a booster station from Lake Michigan.

Luciano added that the village’s projected water rate increases over the next several years have incorporated the eventual switch to Lake Michigan water, so that any increase when the time comes won’t be stark.

Lake Michigan water will provide uniform water quality throughout town. Currently water differs throughout Shorewood, depending on the placement of the well.

“The whole system will be balanced,” Drey said. “We’ll have a comparable product when you talk about Plainfield or Bolingbrook. So, if people are looking at water as a reason to move into a community, it could help us in that avenue for sure.”

Nauvoo home to growth of Mormon religion

BY EMMA BAKER OF THE HANCOCK COUNTY JOURNALPILOT For the Mormons, Quincy appeared to be a beacon of hope and safety during tumultuous times.

Members of the Mormon faith began arriving in Hancock County about 1839 looking for security after having encountered hostility elsewhere, according to Thomas Gregg, a Hancock County settler who wrote about the Mormon faith in his 1880 book “History of Hancock County, Illinois.”

But in Quincy they were welcomed, which contributed to the faithful choosing Hancock County as a place to settle. They established their own town, Nauvoo, north of Quincy. Gregg’s book describes early Nauvoo, before the building of the Mormon Temple, as a picturesque site on the east side of the Mississippi River, about 10 miles north of Keokuk, Iowa.

“The origin, rapid development and prosperity of this religious sect are the most remarkable and instructive historical events of the present century,” Gregg wrote about the Mormons in Nauvoo.

Illinois was a new home where members settled after being driven out of New York, Ohio and Missouri. Unfortunately, the Mormon followers would eventually be driven out of Illinois, too.

THE FOUNDING OF A FAITH The founder of the religion, Vermont native Joseph Smith, was living in New York in 1820 when, at age 14, he read a passage in the New Testament and went to the woods to pray. It is there where Smith said God and Jesus Christ appeared to him, according to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints website. This vision is known now to Mormons as the “First Vision.”

“I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head,” Smith wrote, “above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.”

That experience inspired him to found Mormonism. Church members believe Smith was led in 1823 to a hill in Palmyra, New York, where he received, from an angel known as Moroni, an ancient record, engraved on gold plates, that gave the history of the people who lived on the American continent during

the time of Christ, according to the Mormon website.

He used those to write the “Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.”

Smith - along with Oliver Cowdery, Martin Harris and David Whitmer - then began spreading the word of the book and created a new religion. Cowdery, Harris and Whitmer were known as the “Three Witnesses” and were the only other people to see the plates.

Smith and a few followers made their way to Ohio, where the religion increased in numbers but persecution continued, so they traveled to Missouri.

Church members began to flee from Liberty, Mo., after Smith and other Mormon leaders were arrested in November 1838 on charges of murder, treason, burglary, arson, larceny and theft, according to “Utopian Communities of Illinois” by Randall Soland.

By January 1839, Mormon apostle Brigham Young fled with several hundred followers to Quincy. Thousands more followed.

“Eventually, a total of 8,000 Mormons came to Quincy, where the citizens offered their sympathy and assistance by opening up their homes … giving the Mormons food, clothing and shelter,” Soland wrote.

PLANTING ROOTS Smith joined his family in Quincy, but soon began searching for a new home.

Mormon leaders purchased several hundred acres of land in Commerce, now known as Nauvoo, and began building before the church members joined. By June 1840, there were nearly 3,000 people in Nauvoo.

“Between 1837 and 1846, Mormon missionaries in Great Britain baptized almost 18,000 British citizens from England, Scotland and Wales, of whom 4,733 immigrated to Nauvoo,” Soland wrote.

Within eight years of settling in Nauvoo, the number of residents had grown to nearly 12,000. About $1 million was raised for construction on a temple, which started in 1841 and completed in 1846. New laws were incorporated to help the church prosper, such as tithing, which started in 1838.

“Under the law of tithing, 10 percent of the member’s possessions and property at the time of baptism, as well as 10 percent of their annual income, was to

be given to the church,” Soland wrote.

The Bill of Incorporation empowered the mayor and aldermen of Nauvoo City Council to pass any law they chose, including the court of Nauvoo authority to grant writs of habeas corpus (a court order that allows a prisoner to be released from detention if a judge determines there to be a lack of sufficient cause or evidence). This law applied to Smith, regardless of jurisdiction.

TROUBLES RE-EMERGE Not everyone was happy with the new faith, though. In 1844, a group of dissidents formed an opposition group to the Mormons, and started a newspaper.

“The first and only edition of the Nauvoo Expositor was printed on June 7, 1844,” Soland wrote. “It contained scandalous and derogatory allegations about the ‘adulteress’ lives of Smith and other Mormon leaders. Smith and the city council declared the newspaper libelous and a public nuisance and ordered the town marshal to destroy the press.”

The group against the Mormons filed charges in Carthage against Smith, saying he incited a riot. But due to the city’s ability to issue writs of habeas corpus, Smith was arrested, quickly tried and acquitted by the Nauvoo court.

Anti-Mormons in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri were outraged, according to Soland’s book. Smith contacted Gov. Thomas Ford for help.

“Ford instead declared the destruction of the Expositor illegal and demanded that the Smith brothers (Joseph and Hyrum) come to Carthage for retrial,” he wrote. Smith was arraigned in Carthage, where bail was set high but was quickly paid. Smith was arrested once more for treason, “on the grounds that Smith had wrongly declared martial law in Nauvoo during the destruction of the presses of the Expositor.”

And it was while being held in the Carthage Jail with his brother, Hyrum, that Smith was killed on June 27, 1844.

According to Soland, “Just after 5 o’clock that evening, a group of men approached the jail. The men on guard fired their guns in the air. One group of attackers stormed up the stairs and fired their guns into the room where Joseph and Hyrum were staying.”

STAND After switiching positions this season, DGN’s Marconi elevates defense; earns Player of the Year

Downers Grove North senior Francesca Marconi played her final soccer season in a new position with a wounded knee and a fierce determination to build on the unrivaled success her team enjoyed in 2017.

Mission accomplished.

Switching from outside back to center back, Marconi cemented her legacy as one of the best defenders in school history. She was the anchor of the back line that recorded 12 shutouts, one fewer than last year’s team which advanced to the state semifinals and earned the school’s first soccer state trophy.

On a team that struggled to score goals at times, Marconi’s toughness, mental fortitude and athleticism was the linchpin of North’s continued success. Despite having a target on their backs, the Trojans

(14-7-4) won their second consecutive sectional championship before losing to Andrew 2-1 in the supersectional.

It was quite a feat for a program that had won just one regional title prior to 2017.

For her efforts, Marconi has been named the Voyager Media Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

“She’s a tough defender,” Downers North sophomore forward Alexis Parker said. “She won’t stop.

“She just goes and goes and I think that’s great for our team because she has such a high work ethic.”

Parker and her teammates know exactly how tough Marconi is. They have to go against her in practice every day.

“She gives me a run for my money every time,” Parker said. “But it only makes me better.”

“You want her on your own team,” Swanson said. “You don’t want to play against her.

“We always talk about how we’re each other’s favorite girls to play with because we’ll always play for each other. The whole game we’ll just look at each other and we’re instantly connected and playing with full heart every time.”

Marconi, who comes from a long line of star athletes, gave her heart and soul to the Trojans, particularly this year, which will be her final competitive season. Marconi was set to sign with Colorado-Colorado

Springs but underwent surgery for a torn meniscus in October, which led her to forego a college soccer career.

Instead, the aspiring nurse will attend South Alabama, where she will she be reunited with her sister Gianna, a former All-State forward for North who will finish her nursing studies after playing soccer at Colorado State. “(The decision) was tough,” Marconi said. “It definitely has (made this year more special) especially coming off last year, trying to work up to that or even better this year.

“After my surgery, my knee has not been 100 percent, so it’s been a lot of wear and tear on my body.

Sometimes I’m so exhausted.”

But Marconi never exhausted her desire to compete and win and as a result, the Trojans didn’t, either.

She was a rock in the middle of the

back line, playing every game despite some discomfort.

“I didn’t really think about it because of the mental stuff but every now and then it would hurt,” Marconi said. “(Downers North coach Brian) Papa was really good about it. If I needed a rest he’d take me out.”

Few players know what Marconi went through better than Swanson, who missed her freshman year with a torn ACL but recovered to become a two-time All-Stater.

“That’s tough,” Swanson said.

“I’ve been there with the knee stuff.

“I know a huge part of it is mental, so the fact that she can push it back and keep playing is awesome.

(Marconi) just focused on getting better and getting back out there and for the team. I think that shows SEE ALL-AREA PAGE 9

Indeed, Marconi has always had a team-first attitude. The fouryear starter plays a position that doesn’t lend itself to gaudy statistics (though she had two goals and an assist this season) or press coverage.

“I started as a midfielder in park district until eighth grade,” Marconi said. “Then my coach put me on defense because he saw that I was a bigger body and stronger in the back than I was up top. I had more of a defensive mind and my technique was better in back.”

Marconi’s physical talent can be attributed to her genes, though her defensive role is an anomaly within her family. She is the granddaughter of Joe Marconi, who was a fullback on the Chicago Bears’ 1963 NFL championship team.

Marconi’s aunt, Janelle Marconi, was a track and field star at Downers North who won the state title in the discus in 1986 and now coaches track at Hinsdale Central. Then came her sister, Gianna, who was a star forward for the Trojans.

So Marconi had a name to live up to when she started at North.

“It’s really just an awesome opportunity overall,” Marconi said.

“Bears fans at North know about (her grandfather).

“I’ve got my aunts and uncles who have left a legacy and then Gianna being all-state and going D-1 in college has left a huge legacy. To walk into that, it was big footsteps to fill so I’ve just been working hard all four years and trying to be the soccer player she was and just do my best.”

Marconi is one of six children.

She has three brothers, two of whom expect to be athletes at North in the future, and a sister, Mia, who is a junior forward for the Trojans. But she has felt no pressure to excel.

“My parents (Renee and Jonathan) have raised us to know that they don’t expect us to be like any of our other siblings. They know we’re individually different and good in our own things. Coming in I knew we had the Marconi reputation, but I just did what I could.”

What she did was considerable and her final season went by fast, though she was smart enough to relish every moment.

“This is the last time I will be able to wear a jersey and represent a school, so (I wanted to) take it all in,” Marconi said. “Just play with all your heart and don’t walk off the field thinking you could have done more.”

Teach them while they’re young DEAR DAVE, My wife and I want to begin teaching our son how make a budget and live on one. He’s 16, and he has a part-time job and a hand-me-down car. Is this a realistic idea?

MIKE DEAR MIKE, Your son is at a great point in life to learn how to make money behave. Even in his situation, when he’s still living at home, there are plenty of things he can include in a budget. There’s gas for his car, along with maintenance and insurance. He’ll need to save a little money — maybe even for college — and I’m sure he’ll want some spending cash, too.

Sit down, and teach him how to make a written budget by figuring out the upcoming month’s income and expenses ahead of time. Also, make sure he knows how to properly balance and reconcile his bank account.

It’s still your responsibility to provide him with the basic necessities at this point. But I love your willingness to teach your son how to handle money intelligently.

The sooner he learns some basic money management principles, the sooner he’ll be able to handle his finances responsibly in the real world!
