Shorewood awards bid for Oakwood Drive project Cost for replacing all service lines in area homes will be $113,372

At its May 24 meeting, the Shorewood Village Board approved a bid from Conley Excavating to complete a water service replacement project on Oakwood Drive.

Public Works Director Chris Drey said all the service lines will be replaced for homes in the area.

The project will cost $113,372.

According to board documents, Conley Excavating has satisfactorily completed constructed projects within the village over the past five years. The village added that staff believed the Morris-based excavating and construction company will complete the Oakwood Drive

project successfully.

The company will complete tree removals, traffic control and protection, gutter and concrete curb removal and replacement, among other aspects of the project.

Cupcake Ordinance Additionally, the Shorewood Village Board unanimously approved a new ordinance that has some resident entrepreneurs’ mouths watering.

In June 2014, Illinois passed a law that allows home kitchens and cottage food operations to operate micro-bakeries out of their homes without having to go through regulations that govern commercial kitchens.

According to board documents,

gross sales per month are limited to no more than $1,000.

A Shorewood resident approached staff requesting to pass the ordinance, which nearby towns of Plainfield and Channahon have done, so that she could operate her home business.

Commercial Refuse Pick-Up The board also amended its commercial refuse pick-up restrictions for the village.

Residents have complained that there has been an early morning pick-up for commercial dumpsters. Staff has drafted an amendment prohibiting collection between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and also includes trash pickup as well.

According to board documents, waste hauling contractors will be notified via email notice.

Rialto Turns 90 Historic theater invites supporters to explore, rediscover city gem during 90th anniversary celebration

Supporters of the Rialto Square Theatre and city officials celebrated the theater’s 90th anniversary May 24, reflecting on its past and toasting to its future.

Highlights from the daylong event included behind-the-scenes tours, silent films, a ceremonial cake cutting and more.

Annette Barker, director of marketing at the Rialto, said the event was important in showing the community how the theater has evolved.

“You get to see the workings of how a 1926 vaudeville theater used to work, and the new updates and technology we included now to make it more of a performing arts venue,” she said.

The Rialto has garnered a number of accomplishments over the years, according to Barker.

“The performances that we’ve brought in have changed over the years,” she said. “We do more rentals; we do weddings and receptions, graduations, proms, dance recitals. We’re trying to make it as much of a working theatre as possible.”

Public officials have recently been considering the future of the historic theater, as financial woes over the years have raised questions over the Rialto’s viability.

Mayor Bob O’DeKirk addressed those concerns during the celebration, saying the city council’s commitment to the theater is key to shaping the future of Joliet.

The mayor added that the city needs the Rialto to stay in the picture to allow Joliet to move forward with its downtown development plans.

“A functional Rialto Theatre is a vital part of those plans,” O’DeKirk said.

Rialto brings back great childhood memories.

“It’s an amazing place,” she said.

“I remember coming here as a child watching movies, and then coming back to it for its birthday like this, it’s just phenomenal how beautiful it still is.”

Wiekert said she enjoyed both of the silent movies that were displayed.

“It was wonderful,” she said.

“I read the organ music that accompanies it to make it a full story.”

She added that she was excited to experience the rest of the festivities that were lined up.

“I’m looking forward to the behind-the-scenes tour because I’ve never seen [that part of the theatre],” she said.

Ed Czerkies, of Joliet, was enjoying his time spent mingling among those in attendance for the celebration. He said the theater plays a great role in bringing people into the city.

The hope is that more people visit the theatre to experience all that it offers, Czerkies added.

Candice Quinerly, of Joliet, was in attendance for the celebration at the Rialto. Although she works down the street from the theatre, she doesn’t get to visit it as often as she would like.

“I’ve never seen the chandelier down like this—the duchess,” she said. “It’s really exciting and there’s just a lot people that are here to enjoy it, so that’s really cool.”

Quinerly said the American Legion Band puts on one of her favorite shows at the theatre.

“It always reminds me of my hometown,” she said. “They’re a great band and they just put on a really great Christmas show every year. It’s for a really great cause as well.”

The daylong celebration was estimated to have brought in 500800 people, according to Barker.

She’s hopeful the Rialto will continue to attract area residents by providing a variety of events and performances.

“Will County is a growing county,” she said. “We always try to bring in shows that appeal to a variety of taste. We have shows for the young kids; we have country; we have rock; we have Broadway.

We want to continue bringing in new people, so they realize they don’t have to go to Chicago to see the same performances they can see in their community.”

County honors 47 schools with Earth Flag Award Area schools honored for their environmental sustainability efforts at Rialto Theatre The Will County Land Use Department honored a large number of area schools for their environmental sustainability efforts during the annual Earth Flag Award ceremony at the Rialto Square Theatre.

They were welcomed by Will County Executive Larry Walsh, who greeted the students as “leaders of

tomorrow.” He commended them for their hard work and advocated that they keep educating their parents and others.

Walsh noted that although not all of them were able to send people to the May 18 event, 47 schools earned the distinction.

“That’s huge,” he said. “Keep up the good work.”

Joan O’Keefe, the environmental educator with the Resource Recovery and Energy Division of the Will County Land Use Department, also reminded the students to continue to share their knowledge about recycling.

“People need to be reminded,” she added.

Next school year, schools will explore new ways to reduce lunch waste through procurement and waste disposal.

Joliet Public Library hosts 7th annual Star Wars Day Event will kick off at 11 a.m. in downtown Joliet with a parade of costumed characters

June 4 will be no ordinary day at the Joliet Public Library as it is transformed into the seventh annual Star Wars Day—a family friendly festival of galactic proportions complete with more than 100 costumed Star Wars characters, games, live music, prize drawings, movie prop exhibits and more.

The event will kick off at 11 a.m. in downtown Joliet with a parade of costumed characters supported by the American Legion Band. Be there early to claim your spot on Ottawa, Cass or Joliet Street.

Authors John Jackson Miller and Keith Ryan Kappel will appear this year. They will be joined by several artists, including Dave Dorman, Steve Palenica, Mikey Babinski, James Tampa and Jamie Snell.

The library’s parking lot and a portion of Clinton Street will be closed off for the day’s activities, including live music, food vendors and kid’s games.

This year, the fun will extend

to the Joliet Historical Museum where guests will find kid’s games, professional light saber demonstrations and a presentation on cryogenic freezing.

New this year will be Jedi Training at The Tree of Joliet and craft activities upstairs at the Treehouse Coffee Shop on Cass Street.

The seventh annual Star Wars Day will take place Saturday, June 4 ,from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library, 150 N. Ottawa St., Joliet.

New assisted living community to open in Shorewood Alden Courts is the latest edition to the Alden Estates of Shorewood campus on Black Road.

The building is the third and final building of the Alden Estates campus. When it opens this fall, Alden Courts will offer memory care assisted living services, as well as skilled rehabilitation/Medicare covered services.

“We will provide assisted living services for people living with memory loss and will also offer rehabilitation services exclusively for individuals with memory care issues,” said Annette Borcky, a registered nurse and administrator at the Alden Estates of Shorewood Post-Acute Rehabilitation Center – located next to the new building.

“Our memory care model is unique in ensuring the safety, security and comfort of our memory care residents if their health care needs every change.”

Borcky said that the memory care building is specially designed and staffed to meet the unique needs of individuals with memory care issues.

The community will offer the following amenities and services: private rooms, improved quality of life, three neighborhoods based on level of care, assistance

with activities of daily living, specially trained and licensed staff, specialized nutritional program, ability-focused activities and programming, and enclosed outdoor courtyards.

“We look forward to serving the people of Shorewood and surrounding areas with the very best in memory care,” Borcky said.

“All people deserve compassion and the ability to age with dignity and grace. That’s why we will provide a holistic approach to quality care and services to help individuals with memory care issues continue to lead lives of purpose and joy at Alden Courts of Shorewood.”

By law, the Will County Clerk’s Office is required to issue a new voter identification card to each registered voter every two years.

This card lists the voter’s township and precinct, polling place and the units of government for which they are entitled to vote.

Other features of the card include a change of address form (if moved within Will County), an application to serve as an Election Judge and a

new feature that allows the voter to request a Vote by Mail ballot.

The next election in Will County will be the Presidential General Election Nov. 8. Voters are not required by Illinois law to present their voter identification card in order to vote on election day.

In May, we celebrated Williams Syndrome Awareness Month – a time for us to see Williams syndrome and other intellectual disabilities as a gift. It was also a time to educate our communities about how to accept and include those of us with special needs.

Take, for example, my friend Joelle Packard, 15, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, who was diagnosed with Williams syndrome.

According to the Williams Syndrome Association, Williams syndrome is a genetic condition that is present at birth. Despite having medical problems, cardiovascular disease, certain distinguishing facial characteristics, developmental delays and learning disabilities, many with Williams syndrome are very social and friendly. There are 20,000 to 30,000 people in the U.S. who are diagnosed with Williams syndrome, according to the WSA. “I struggle with writing, but I’m really social and I love people,” said Joelle.

“Having Williams syndrome makes me very, very social.”

Then, I had an opportunity to visit Joelle’s school to see how inclusive her private all-girls Catholic school is for people with special needs. The final day, I had an opportunity to join the Packard’s at a Special Olympics unified basketball exhibition game at Blessed Sacrament School in Washington, D.C. A “unified” game means that players come from both the special needs community and

CHARLESTON – As Derrius Rodgers leaves Lockport High School, he does so leaving his legacy on the school and the track and field program.

The senior claimed three medals in last weekend’s IHSA state finals at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium and by doing that, secured five medals in his career, making him the second most decorated Porter ever behind Nick Setta, who won six medals from 1995-98.

Rodgers does own the Lockport honors of the most individual medals with four, as Setta has three individual awards and was part of three relay teams.

He also joins Setta and Dan Schrock as the only Lockport athletes with three medals in one state final.

Rodgers earned a pair of second-

place finishes, coming up just short of Galesburg’s Josh Eiker in both the 100-meter dash (10.66 seconds) and the 200 dash (22.13).

“He is one helluva competitor,” Rodgers said of Eiker. “He is a great guy to run against. He pushes me and I will give credit to him. I am happy with my performance.”

A season ago, both titles would have belonged to Rodgers, as Eiker and Galesburg were in Class 2A, but moved up a class this season.

“I have been thinking about that,” Rodgers said. “He got moved up to 3A this year and I would have been a state champ, but it is part of the game. I like the competitiveness and competing at the top level, so I am happy I got to run against him.”

Indians win regional title, fall in sectional opener

The end of a season is always emotional for a coach and the outgoing seniors and for Minooka coach Janel Grzetich, she knew it would be extra emotional when the season ended for the Indians’ volletball team this season.

That end came with a 25-25, 1725, 19-25 loss to Lincoln-Way East in the sectional final.

“This is a very special group for me,” Grzetich said. “A group of them I had to bring up as sophomores – and I say had to because I only had a few seniors and that was it.

So, they were on varsity as very timid, scared sophomores. Except for Brandon Baranski, who was up as a freshman. For him to have the game-winning kill was icing on the cake. For me to have had him as a freshman and to have gotten to know these boys so well, it was really cool. I am not a crier, but I will be emotional when this is done.”

That sectional game, however, looked to be in jeopardy of even happening as the Indians had to scramble back from a 19-9 deficit in game one of the Lockport Regional to help win the regional title with a 28-26, 20-25, 25-18 win over Lincoln-Way North.

“I already had it in my head that we were going three – and we did wind up going three – but I didn’t think we were going to come back in that first game,” Grzetich said.

“We have talked about those kinds of moments and those kinds of situations all season, but to see it executed was a really cool coaching moment. To be able to sit back and

That intensity was paced by Baranski, who was on the statequalifying team as a freshman.

“We knew we had to bounce

back,” he said. “This is our senior year and we had to come out and get this. This regional title is a big deal. We have been looking at this all season. Tonight we played how we were supposed to – like the No. 1 seed in the regional.”

Joliet Catholic Academy’s Jack Geissler posted the area’s best showing at the state tennis meet last weekend, going 5-2 and losing in the consolation quarterfinals.

He opened play with wins over Yash Patel of Oak Forest (6-0, 6-0), Kirby Julian of Chicago Northside (6-1, 6-2) and Ryan Mitchell of Lincoln-Way East (6-2, 6-4).

He then lost to Brett Meyers of Neuqua Valley (6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-0) before bouncing back to beat DJ Colantone of Plainfield Central (6-4, 7-5) and Kailash Panchapakesan of Jacobs (6-3, 6-4).

“I love to represent the Porters,” Rodgers said. “There is a lot of pride in that and I love representing the Porters. “It is awesome to have milestones and I am proud to be part of the moment.”

Rodgers’ third medal came as he joined Chris Gargano, Jesse Bustami and Sheldon Snapp to place sixth in the 800-relay with a time of 1:27.67.

“We were kind of performance about our performance (in prelims) and we kind of messed up some handoffs and we got lane nine and we were kind of upset about that,” Rodgers said. “To run a 1:27 out of lane nine is pretty impressive.”

The only thing a Porter teammate could do to come close to bettering Rodgers’ performance at state was to claim a state title – and that was exactly what John Meyer did.

The sophomore won the shot put crown with a put of 61-feet,

2-inches.

He becomes the eighth track and field champion for the Porters and the first in the shot put. He joins only former NFL offensive lineman Tony Pashos (3rd, 1998) as shot medalists.

“It feels good,” Meyer said. “I came in here with no expectations and no pressure and just wanted to do my best. I was really focused and kept my mind on the goal I had which was to win it all.”

Meyer also competed in the discus, but missed the finals with a throw of 150-0.

As a team, the Porters placed sixth in state with 30 points, finishing one place ahead of Minooka, who was seventh with 29 points.

The Indians were paced by their relay teams, as they earned a second-place finish and two thirds.

The Minooka quartet of Colin Marchio, Maceo Findlay, Brandon Adams and Justin Wolz placed second in the 400-relay with a time of 41.73 and were third in the

“Last year didn’t go as well as we wanted it to, so we put in a lot of hard work,” Findlay said. “We are blessed to be able to stand on that podium and be all-state athletes.

We used that pain as redemption and we just came out hard.”

The Indian sprinters had more on their minds this weekend than just earning state medals, as they were running for sprint coach Mark Smith, who is battling Stage 4 cancer.

“That was what really kept me going was that I was trying my best to get him a medal,” Marchio said.

“No matter how painful it is running or how bad I hurt, I know it is not as bad as Smith and I wanted to do my best to make him smile knowing he trained some of the best 4x1 and 4x2 teams in the state.”

Findlay also said Smith was a motivation.

“He is a big part of this track family,” Findlay said. “It is not just the sprinters and vaulters he coached. He coached everyone and he is our inspiration and we hope we made him proud.”

Wolz was another runner who wanted to make Smith proud as he and Adams were also part of Minooka’s 1600-relay team that placed third in 3:17.73. They were joined by Aaron Arroyo and Matt Dlugopolski.

“Even though we didn’t get a team trophy, we know that as long as we put out our best, he was going to love us no matter what. At the end of the day, we know we gave it all we had.” Wolz said. “Obviously, you want to win, but I am happy with our performance. There is no better way to end my senior year.

It is a good feeling to finish high school on this note.”

It wasn’t only the sprinters that were inspired by Smith, as Soren Knudsen also dedicated his 1600run to Smith. He placed third in the race in 4:17.10.

In the pole vault, Minooka’s Brennan Loughran finished just shy of a medal, placing 10th with a vault of 14-6, while teammate Marcus Hayden advanced to finals as well and was 17th, clearing 13-6.

Minooka’s 3200 relay team of Jake Swank, Jordan Freese, Chris Drey and Miguel Lomeli posted a

time of 8:23.5 did not advance to the finals.

Minooka’s Kevin Lam had a shot put throw of 54-3.25 and did not make the finals.

The Lockport 400 relay group of Gargano, Snapp, Jacob Freese and Conor McCarthy missed the finals after a time of 43.58, while Bustami posted a jump of 20-05.5 in the long jump and missed the finals.

In the pole vault, Porter Wade Walder cleared 13-6, but missed advancing.

Amazon to open 2nd Joliet distribution center Project will result in construction-related jobs and more than 2,000 full-time positions Amazon is bringing its second distribution center to Joliet, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

The more than 700,000-squarefoot distribution center, located on 49.35 acres at the Laraway Crossings Business Park, will fulfill customer orders.

“We are very excited to have Amazon double their commitment to Joliet,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said.

“Amazon has brought thousands of quality jobs to Joliet, offering competitive wages and generous benefits starting on the first day.

We look forward to continuing our working relationship with Amazon and to what the future holds.”

In terms of contributing to the local economy, this project will result in construction-related jobs and more than 2,000 full-time positions at the distribution center, plus property tax revenue generated for local governments and schools.

Club paints town purple for Relay for Life Joliet West Students of Community Advocacy participates in awareness event At last week’s monthly Relay for Life meeting of Joliet, the Joliet West Students of Community Advocacy participated in the “Paint the town Purple” weekend scavenger hunt earning over 8,000 points by securing six sponsorships, thanking businesses for being smoke free, tying purple ribbons on 81 trees around the Joliet/Shorewood areas, placing signs at businesses, hanging posters around the town and more.

Co-captain and student at Joliet West High School, Katie Thontlin, said, “The experience was worthwhile as we worked together as a team.”

With this being her second year on the team, she plans to make this a yearly participation for her as she knows family and friends who have battled and are currently battling cancer.

Volunteer sponsor and cocaptain, Kristen Koppers, started the Relay for Life Club in 2012 after her father passed away battling stage 4 pancreatic and colon cancer for 15 months.

“After my mom was a survivor of stage 2 breast cancer and going through remission, I participated in local relay for life overnight walks.

When my dad was diagnosed with stage 4, I knew something had to be done,” she said.

In four short years with only a team of 7-9 active participants and students per year, the club has donated $10,841.86 to the American Cancer Society. Every year Koppers, an English teacher at Joliet West High School, sets a goal for her students to meet.

Some students understand the struggle that many family members

go through; West student Emily Czyz joined the Relay for Life team to learn more about American Cancer Society and how they help others.

“I don’t know anyone who has or had cancer, but I learned a lot from this group,” she said.

With the Joliet Pottery Lounge sponsoring the team, the owners take a great interest in the cause as their daughters, Laney Naling along with her older sister Emmy Naling, joined the team to support their loved ones who have been affected by cancer.

This year the goal was $3,500 which was met back in early May; yet, the students did not stop there and increased their goal to $5,000.

JTHS West student, Madi Dobbs, knew that once the group met the original goal, there was always room to grow.

“I wanted our team to continue to strive. By raising awareness and donations for this cause, hopefully there will be a cure,” Dobbs said.

Currently, the team has raised $3,630 where they will continue to accept sponsorships and donations until August 2016. To continue their fight, Koppers created a website selling deco mesh wreaths that she hand makes where the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society – Relay for Life 2016. Troy says Chromebook technology initiative will continue next year Students at William B. Orenic Intermediate School had improved technology at their fingertips during their core classes this year.

Jenna Woodland, education technology coordinator at Troy Community School District 30C, explained that increasing the number of devices per classroom is part of a new district initiative that will continue next year atTroy Middle School and in the kindergarten and first grade classrooms. Students

had access to 15 Chromebooks per classroom in math, science, social studies and English language arts, as well as exploratory classes such as enhanced technology and digital arts.

“It comes down to students having access to technology in a variety of contexts,” Woodland said. “We’re exposing our students to more technical skills, which will support them in their future careers and provide them with the technology that will enhance learning.”

The computers also allow students to give feedback and answer questions during teacher presentations.

“Teachers use them for formative assessment in the moment; to make sure students understand the concepts,” Woodland said.

Chromebooks were chosen

because of their connection with Google Apps for Education, which is the learning management system used by teachers in the district.

The computers are also used to assist teachers in creating digital assignments and incorporating media into lessons.

“The Troy District differentiates instruction to meet the needs of our students,” said Superintendent Todd Koehl. “As such, we set a clear goal of deepening our integration of technology into daily instructional practices. 15 Chromebooks provide each teacher with enough devices to encourage a differentiated approach for students to access our curriculum. Troy is fortunate to have teachers who embrace these diverse strategies to meet the needs of students as they learn.”

Block system will allow more time for math, science Troy Middle School will be moving to the block system this fall, after unanimous approval by the Troy Community School District 30-C School Board.

Troy Middle School Principal Renee Marski said the change will allow for more instruction in the school’s important STEM classes.

“The purpose of going to the block schedule is to increase instructional minutes in math,” Marski said. “Math is one of

those crucial subjects students need to succeed in college and careers. With the new education standards and the focus on STEM and college and career readiness, we decided to increase the time students spend in math classes to 82 minutes each day.”

That’s an increase of 42 minutes from the current school year. As a result, the district has reorganized teaching staff to create five new math assignments to meet the increased need. The change also allows for better alignment with the middle school’s feeder school, William B. Orenic Intermediate School.

An additional 10 minutes per week will also be added to science and social studies classes.
