Drivers get their kicks in Route 66 festival Red Carpet Corridor celebrates famous roadway from Joliet to Towanda

The Mother Road has changed over the years. But the history behind the most famous roadway in the United States still runs deep.

Over the past weekend, folks took advantage of some summerlike temperatures and clear skies to “get their kicks” along Route 66, part of this year’s Red Carpet Corridor Festival.

This year marked the 12th year for the event, a 90-mile driving tour of Historic Route 66 between

Joliet and Towanda.

Each of the 13 communities along the drive host local events designed to entice visitors and highlight the good old days of Route 66.

In Joliet, visitors stopped at the Joliet Area Historical Museum for a walk through the past, learning about the city’s roots with a free walkthrough of the museum.

Ken and Laura Osika of Western Springs decided to take in the annual festival for the first time on May 5, on the advice of relatives.

“My sister has done it for a cou-

ple of years, and she told us about it, and we just happened to be on vacation this week. This is the first stop, it’s interesting,” Laura Osika said.

Ken Osika was especially drawn to a wall of photos on and information that highlighted Jewel food stores as they once appeared.

“I worked with Jewel for 44 years, so this is interesting, look at the Jewel from the 1950s.

I’m very impressed,” Ken said.

The festival is organized each year by the Route 66 Association of Illinois and the towns within the 90mile trek. Event organizers said the ride, which was scaled back to just one day for 2018, serves as a

Author, meteorologist visits Eisenhower students Ginger Zee recently discussed her new young adult book, ‘Chasing Helicity’ ABC News Chief Meteorologist and New York Times bestselling author Ginger Zee recently discussed her new young adult book, “Chasing Helicity,” her love of math and science, and her fascination with weather with 147 Eisenhower Academy third, fourth, and fifth grade students in Joliet.

She told the students she became fascinated with weather when she saw a water spout when she was a young child growing up in Western Michigan and the rest is history.

Ginger Zee shared with the students, photos of her career as a meteorologist, including covering Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy, paragliding in the Himalaya Mountains, and skydiving over a glacier in Iceland and how these events were all related to science.

The students were also thrilled to know she has starred on “Dancing with the Stars” and “Celebrity Jeopardy,” and met U.S. President

First commissioned in 1926, Route 66 quickly became the preferred passage from Chicago to Los Angeles. The famous 2,500 mile highway, which was officially decommissioned in 1985, achieved status as an American icon, despite being replaced by

HUGS donates to Forest Preserve Shorewood HUGS donates to Forest Preserve District for K-9 care Shorewood HUGS recently donated $2,000 to the Forest Preserve District of Will County to be used for the care and training of the District’s K-9, Jullo.

Sue Coyle, a Shorewood HUGS board member, presented the check to Ralph Schultz, the Forest Preserve’s chief operating officer.

The funds were raised during the charity group’s annual “HUGS for Hounds” doggy Easter egg hunt, at the Forest Preserve’s Hammel Woods Dog Park. Shorewood HUGS charges a registration fee of $5 per dog for the egg hunt to raise funds for the donation. The group has been hosting the egg hunt at

For tourists like the Osikas, the Red Carpet Corridor event was a good way to get to know some local history.

“We hope to discover the other towns and what they’re about.

Other than the casino, we’re not up this way a lot,” Laura said.

Coyle, who is the event chairwoman, said “HUGS for Hounds” was one of the group’s first events and each year it has been held, the egg hunt has combined the best of both worlds: fun for dogs and their owners and raising money for a good cause.

“We’re supporting Jullo, but also it’s just a fun event for the community,” she said.

Walgreens, America’s pharmacist, got its start in Illinois In ‘50s Walgreens entered modern retail era BY CHRISTOPHER PLACEK CPLACEK@ DAILYHERALD. COM A pharmacist at Walgreens for 37 years, Joel Karlinsky might often see people on their worst days, coming to him for antidotes to their health maladies.

But in providing a helping hand and friendly smile, Karlinsky formed a bond with his customers. One regular appreciated the service so much that he had an engraved Montblanc pen made for Karlinsky with the pharmacist’s name on it.

“I tried to go out of my way to be nice to them,” said Karlinsky, now retired, who for a time managed the pharmacy at a Walgreens near the company’s Deerfield headquarters. “Customer service goes a long way. Everybody fills the same prescriptions, but if you’re providing them with a friendly, knowledgeable individual, that gives them a level of service above and beyond.”

That pharmacist’s personalized touch mirrors the 117-year-old company’s origin story, when founder Charles R. Walgreen Sr. and colleague Arthur C. Thorsen personally greeted each customer who came to the door of their modest 20-by-50-foot pharmacy on Chicago’s South Side.

Some customers also called in their orders to Walgreen. He famously tried to keep the person on the phone long enough to give his assistant Caleb Danner time to gather the requested items and personally deliver them.

Company historians have coined it the “two-minute drill.”

“He was bringing a new level of customer service to the industry,” said Michael Polzin, a longtime Walgreens spokesman. “It was one of the things he focused on early on.”

Walgreen, born near Galesburg, moved to Dixon with his family as a child. At 16, he got his first pharmacy job, working for Horton’s Drugstore, where he earned $4 a week. He quit after a year and a half, but continued in the pharmacy business, working for

several pharmacists after arriving in Chicago in 1893.

Walgreen ended up at Isaac Blood’s drugstore inside Barrett’s Hotel at the corner of Cottage Grove and Bowen avenues. In 1901, Blood sold the store to Walgreen for $6,000. It took Walgreen years to pay off a loan he needed to make the purchase.

Walgreen became an innovator, taking what had been a dimly lit drugstore and installing bright lights. He widened the aisles and started selling items uncommon for pharmacies at the turn of the century, like pots and pans.

Walgreen, like other pharmacists, introduced the soda fountain to his stores, but he kept his open yearround, serving his wife Myrtle’s homemade specialties, like chicken, tongue and egg salad sandwiches, bean and cream of tomato soup, and cakes and pies.

In 1919, Walgreen had 20 stores, which a decade later grew to 525.

Company historians have attributed Walgreens tremendous growth in the 1920s to the popularity of the malted milkshake, invented by soda jerk Ivar “Pop” Coulson in 1922. Coulson added vanilla ice cream to the common malted milk drink, which consisted of milk, chocolate syrup and malt powder.

Daniel Okrent, in his book “Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,” suggests the store also benefited from alcohol sales during that time, because pharmacies were allowed to sell booze

for medicinal purposes.

It was in the 1950s when Walgreens entered the modern retail era, with the introduction of self-service stores. Until then, clerks working behind counters retrieved goods off shelves for customers.

By the 1980s, the company was building more and more stand-alone stores instead of those in strip malls or attached to other retailers. By the next decade, the company started building drive-through pharmacy lanes.

Expansion has continued in recent years: in 2010, Walgreens acquired New York-based pharmacy chain Duane Reade; in 2014, it merged with Switzerland-based Alliance Boots, and in 2017, it got regulatory approval to purchase about 2,000 Rite Aid stores.

With that addition, Walgreens will have about 10,000 locations in the United States.

So how can a chain that’s become America’s pharmacist maintain its personal touch?

“It was so important to Charles Walgreen Sr. to make that connection with his customers,” says Polzin, the company spokesman. “I think that carries through today, too.

“Obviously, we’re a much, much bigger retailer and pharmacist than we were back then, but we still want to provide that care to each individual that comes into our stores.”

Sanguinetti to open Hero Helps Summit Implementation of Illinois Opioid Action Plan to be presented Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti will offer welcoming comments at the 2018 Hero Helps Southwest Coalition Community Summit during where she will share our state’s efforts to curtail the opioid crisis that has plagued Illinois and the Nation.

The Community Summit, which is free and open to the pub-

lic, begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 11 at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center in Romeoville.

Lt. Gov. Sanguinetti, who cochairs the Governor’s Opioid Overdose Prevention and Intervention Task Force, will discuss the key elements of the Illinois Opioid Action Plan.

The plan, a collaboration be-

tween various state agencies, community stakeholders, and advocates, creates a framework outlining approaches to address the opioid crisis in Illinois.

The goal is to reduce the anticipated number of opioid-related deaths by 33 percent over the next three years.

“The opioid crisis knows no neighborhood, no color, and no class. It’s an equal opportunity aggressor that has killed nearly 11,000 Illinoisans the last 10 years,” Sanguinetti said. “Our task

force is hard at work traveling the state gathering research as we implement our Illinois Opioid Action Plan and save lives. I’m excited to speak at this year’s Hero Helps summit and thankful to the organizers for their ongoing efforts to battle this deadly epidemic.”

The Summit also will feature presentations by Maria Bruni, assistant secretary of programs for the Illinois Department of Human Services, and Dr. Nirav Shah, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. Dr. Shah co-

chairs the Governor’s Task Force.

In addition, Kathleen Burke, Director of Substance Use Initiatives for Will County, will provide Narcan administration training to those who register in advance.

There also will be a resource fair with 40 vendors who provide substance abuse prevention and intervention services. Up to four free continuing education credits will be offered.

SCHRADER, JR. Charles F. Schrader, Jr., 84, a longtime resident of Plainfield, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2018 at his home, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on August 30, 1933 in Lemont.

Charles is survived by his treasured companion of many years, Dolores Kucera; his loving children, Karen (Marty) Brauweiler of Plano,; Kevin (Pam) Schrader of Leland; Kathie (Jesse) Veliz of Bolingbrook; Ken (Pam) Schrader of Plainfield; and Keith (Kris) Schrader of Morris; his 11 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren; his dear sister, Mabel (the late Harry) Maas of Elgin; his brother-in-law, Francis Carlock and sister-in-law, Gerrie Spokas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and the Ray and Bernice Kucera family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Corrine Schrader, and their son, Randall Schrader, in infancy; his parents, Charles and Elizabeth Schrader, Sr.; and his siblings, Gilbert,

Clarence, Roy, Eldon Schrader and Alice Dunn.

Charles was a lifelong farmer in the Lemont and Plainfield area.

He was a longtime member of Will County Farm Bureau. Charles proudly served in the United States Army from 1956-1958 and earned an honorable discharge.

He was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church, Naperville and a current longtime member of Hope Lutheran Church, Shorewood. Above all, Charles loved spending time with his family.

He will be deeply missed.

Tyler Lancaster has been through a lot to get to where he is, and he knows what he has to do

For anyone who plays college football, their ultimate dream is to hear their name called at the NFL Draft as one of the more than 250 selections by one of the 32 teams of the National Football League.

That was the dream of Plainfield East graduate Tyler Lancaster — at least for 240 or so picks.

Toward the end of the seventh — and final — round, Lancaster and his agent had agreed to terms with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent.

And with a Packer hat in hand, he informed those close to him of the exciting news.

The only issue was that there were still teams that could select him and ruin the moment.

“It was a very weird feeling because I got very excited about Green Bay and I told everyone that, but there were still 10 picks left. I was hoping nothing did change. So many people want to hear their name (as a draftee), but at that time, I was hoping not to hear it,” Lancaster said. “It was a stressful day. I knew what to expect, but you never know what it’s like until you get there. I was sitting, waiting with friends and family, and by the time the

seventh round comes around, I am texting with my agent and we had already narrowed down the teams we were considering based on depth chart, the interest they showed in me and the coaching staff. Green Bay was on the top from the very beginning and it felt right.”

Lancaster did not hear his name, signed, and became a Packer as he had wanted.

“About mid seventh round, the D Line coach (of the Packers) and said they took a defensive lineman out of Cal (James Looney) and that they wouldn’t take another D lineman, but they still really wanted me in free agency,” Lancaster said. “I kept that in mind and I took a call from my agent and he said if I went in free agency there were deals in place and the Packers were on top and I knew that was what I was going to do. So, it was decided with 10 or 12 picks left.”

Lancaster, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 313 pound Romeoville resident, was signed by Green Bay as a defensive lineman, a position he played at Northwestern after converting from offensive line after high school.

“I am a D lineman and I am excited for that, but I will say what I said back then and that’s put me on the field coach — I SEE LANCASTER PAGE 9

Baseball players earn CCAC awards Travis Schoonover (Braidwood, Ill./Reed-Custer), Kevin Mampe (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way Central) and Michael Quiram (Shorewood, Ill./ Joliet Catholic) were all named to the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference Baseball Team.

Schoonover was selected to the conference’s first team, while Quiram and Mampe were both second-team honorees.

USF left fielder Shawn Harper (Plainfield, Ill./Providence Catholic) added a gold glove selection for the Saints.

A sophomore, Schoonover, takes home the first all-conference honor of his career. He tied for second in the CCAC with nine home runs this season while also ranking top-10 in the league in hits (75, third), RBIs (44, sixth), runs scored (44, sixth) and batting average (.361, 10th).

Seven of his nine homers and 46 of his 75 hits came against conference opponents this season.

Schoonover was named the CCAC Player of the Week on May

2 after hitting .500 with nine runs driven in during five USF victories from April 24-28.

This is the third all-conference selection for Mampe.

The senior was one of the top hitters and pitchers on the Saints this season.

At the plate, Mampe hit .311 this season and was among the conference leaders with 45 runs scored and 28 walks.

He also led the Saints with 13 doubles and a .416 on-base percentage.

He was named the CCAC Player of the Week on April 3 after hitting .500 with 10 runs scored over five games.

On the mound, he started 12 games for the Saints, logging 69 innings and a team-leading 67 strikeouts.

He also tossed a pair of seveninning shutouts against CCAC foes, including a two-hitter against Olivet Nazarene on April 7.

LANCASTER FROM PAGE 7 don’t care where it is,” he said. “I don’t feel any less valued as guys that were drafted and I know I can compete.”

That attitude was what got Lancaster a spot with the Wildcats and ultimately his crack at the NFL. “His senior season, we moved him from guard to center, where he became one of the best centers in the country and was probably the top center in the Midwest. He had about six offers, but he had a dream school and that was Northwestern, but they had five linemen offered and all five committed and Tyler was kind of the sixth guy,” said former Plainfield East head coach Mike Romelli. “(Northwestern) told us that they did have some scholarships open and if he wanted to come and earn a scholarship at summer camp, they would be happy to have him. That day, he was offered as an athlete because he basically blew up whatever drills they had. Then that summer he made the ‘The Opening’ which is a big deal with Nike and he was able to fly out to Nike headquarters and he was one of the top linemen in the country.

“At Northwestern, they planned on playing him as a D lineman and he had a rough go. His freshman year he redshirted, then his redshirt freshman year he got a concussion and didn’t play too much and he was a little bit defeated. He had a strong support at home and he stayed with it and he really started grasping things heading into his sophomore season and he had three pretty good years and had a good career. If he is given an opportunity in life, in football or in a career, he will put 100 percent into it and live it.”

With that opportunity at Northwestern, he became a beast in the middle of the defensive line and was a threeyear starter. He posted 40 tackles (9.5 for loss) with two sacks as a senior. His junior year, he recorded 28 tackles (3.5 for loss) and tallied 33 tackles (5.5 for loss), 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles as a sophomore.

His senior year, he was voted by his teammates to wear jersey No.1, an honor for any Wildcat player, as it is given to the player who best represents the character of the program.

“Getting No. 1 was a huge honor and I appreciate it,” Lancaster said. “And that’s all it

He showed off what that hard work had given him.

Lancaster was not invited to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, but at his pro day, his 36 bench press reps would have placed him fourth among defensive linemen at the combine. He also posted a 4.96 40yard dash time, which would have tied him with Tennessee’s Kahlil McKenzie and Alabama’s Da’Ron Payne as the fastest 300plus pound defensive linemen.

“His pro day numbers were off the charts,” Romelli said.

“He attacks it and he works his butt off to get better and that is what separates Tyler from other people and he has put himself in this position.

“There will not be too many people that will out physical him, whether it is on the defensive line or the offensive line.”

If Lancaster makes the Packers’ roster, he will join Plainfield North running back Kapri Bibbs in the league. Bibbs ended last season with the Redskins and is looking to secure a spot in the Washington backfield this year.

He would be one of only four players from District 202 schools to see a snap in the NFL, joining Bibbs, Plainfield High School’s Scott Davis (25th overall selection in the 1988 NFL Draft) and former Plainfield Wildcat and current head coach of Bolingbrook High School John Ivlow, who appeared as a running back in two games for the Chicago Bears and won a Super Bowl with the 49ers.

As a Romeoville resident, Lancaster joins current Spartan head coach and former allstater Oliver Gibson, as well as brothers Cameron and Byron Stingily, who were on NFL rosters.

Cameron Stingily is now on the coaching staff at Maine East High School.

Lancaster is the second professional athlete to come from Plainfield East, following Victor Pineda, who was the first homegrown player in the history of the Chicago Fire soccer team.

“I am proud of that,” Lancaster said of his background. “I am appreciative of what (Plainfield East) offered me. Coach Romelli saw that spark in me and took an interest in me and I just want to make everyone proud. I know not many people know of Plainfield and Romeoville outside of here and I want to put it on the map and I want to see the

number of guys that make it go up. My Northwestern teammate JB Butler is a Plainfield guy from JCA and he will be going after this same thing next year.”

While the Packers are a good fit on the field for Lancaster, the 3.5-hour drive is a good fit for his family to watch him — which a big inspiration.

Family gained a new meaning for Lancaster the past year or so.

Lancaster’s dad, Brad, died in January after a battle with cancer.

“It will be really cool to have my friends and family close — my mom and my sister especially. This has been a journey for them too and I can’t wait for them to see me play,” Lancaster said. “After my dad passed away, they have been searching for something to put their hopes in and naturally, it has become this journey to the NFL and I know it wouldn’t make anyone happier than them to see me play out there and I want to grant that to them. I know my dad is looking down, doing back flips and I know he would have wanted to see this, but he had the idea in his head that it probably wouldn’t happen, but he pushed all the way through the bowl game and was on the field with me and I was really happy to do that with him.

“Now, this is a turnaround from the trials and tribulations we went through the past few months and I appreciate the opportunity.”

While Lancaster was brought up in a hard-working, blue-collar family where he was taught to work hard for what he wanted. His dad’s fight gave him even more inspiration.

“It was incredible the hills and valleys I have had at Northwestern, but hard work and determination will get you there. I really never changed anything up — I have always put my head down and work until I pass out.

“My motto has been — ‘Remember the Why.’ Why was I going out at 4 a.m. and running until I puke, why am I lifting until my arms are tearing, why do I play this game in the first place?

I would look over at my dad and see how hard he was fighting just to see me play,” Lancaster said. “On senior day, it was 30 degrees out with ice coming down so hard and tearing at our throats and my dad came down on the field with me. I remember my why — it is for my family. They give me the motivation and I fight for them.”

Perhaps his best performance of the season came on April 21 when he earned the win in USF’s 2-1, 12-inning victory over Saint Xavier by surrendering just one unearned run on eight hits in 11 frames.

Quiram also added a .330 batting average at the plate with seven doubles, 19 runs scored and 16 RBIs.

Harper takes home the first gold glove honor of his career after being one of three CCAC players to not commit an error in at least 50 chances. DAWN DEAR DAWN, Yes, the will needs to be changed to reflect her wishes where the house is concerned. Since she’s still able to make decisions independently, the will should be legally updated to reflect exactly what she wants to have happen with every piece of her estate.

It’s fine if she wants to give her boyfriend the house. It’s your mom’s will, and her estate, so she can do pretty much whatever she wants. She could also leave what’s called a life estate that says her boyfriend gets use of the home while he’s alive. Technically, in this kind of situation the house would be left to you, but he would legally have use of it during his life. Upon his death, the home could then revert to you or your brother.

LESLIE DEAR LESLIE, I’m glad you’re paying attention to the finances around your house. Of course, there are some things you must have. We call these “necessities.” Most things are not necessities, though. If your air conditioning breaks down, or you have car repairs, those are things you must spend money on to fix. Things like new furniture, vacations, and eating at restaurants are not necessities. They’re things you might want, but they’re not necessary — especially when you’re trying to pay off debt.

I always recommend people take a hard look at their priorities, and remember there’s a difference between wanting something and needing something to survive. It can be hard, and it may mean everyone has to go without a few things they want for a while. But if your parents are serious about getting out of debt, they’ll do it.

Chess Club building math minds at Orenic

Wrapping up its second year at William B. Orenic Intermediate School is the Chess Club, which sponsor and W.B.O. Math Specialist Dr. Janet Grenier said she’s found promotes good problemsolving skills, improved attention and good sportsmanship.

Grenier began the club at the Troy Community School District 30-C school last year after spon-

soring a chess club at Troy Middle School before that. The game is an excellent activity for students, she said.

The game of chess requires strategic and critical thinking that encourages the use of both sides of the brain,” she said. “I want the members to have fun, make friends and enjoy playing the game of chess.”
