Student Council of Troy school donates pop tabs to hospital Student council collected 90.365 pounds of pop tabs, which they donated to Edwards Hospital in Naperville The William B. Orenic Intermediate School club donated 90 pounds of tabs Through their “Pop it and Drop it” community service program, the William B. Orenic Intermediate School Student Council collected 90.365 pounds of pop tabs, which they donated to Edwards Hospital in Naperville.

The W.B.O. Student Council sponsors are Ashley Fisher and Loretta McKnight, who said the collection began at the school in October and wrapped up in May. “Each of our teams placed two collection buckets in their hallways,” Fisher said. “After our final collection, we had about eight full printer paper boxes worth of pop tabs to donate at

the Edwards Hospital event. It was incredible.”

The hospital will donate the proceeds from the tabs to the Ronald McDonald Family Room in Edward Hospital, with a charitable match from United Scrap Metal.

While at the event, Student Council members also decorated and filled goodie bags for the hospital’s pediatric patients.

Student Council members who participated in the program were Melanie Alvarez, Daniella Anighoro, Mia Apollo, Madison Casey, Palmer Calvey, Vicente Cavada, Taylynn Henson, Caiden Koerner, Ava Kowynia, Ava Laurendi, Jenna Nofal, Emma Overall and Sydney Piazza.

The W.B.O. Student Council this year also raised $500 with a Christmas fundraiser that supported families in the school and raised over $300 from a Valentine’s fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

William B. Orenic Intermediate School is a Troy Community School District 30-C school.

Pritzker proposal would help Joliet area More than $1 billion could go toward I80 and Des Plaines River bridge

The governor has proposed putting more than $1 billion towards reconstruction of Interstate 80 and the bridges over the Des Plaines River.

Though the funding for the capital improvements planned throughout the state would come from increased taxes on gasoline and other products and services.

Manley attends Joliet Hospice groundbreaking Expansion will improve the patient and family experience with a larger, brighter and more efficient environment Illinois House Assistant Majority Leader Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, recently attended the groundbreaking for Joliet Area Community Hospice’s (JACH) facility expansion. Hospice staff, elected officials and community members gathered on April 24 to celebrate the next phase of

JACH’s $3.5 million expansion.

“I’d like to congratulate Joliet Area Community Hospice for breaking ground on the expansion of the hospice home,” said Manley. “Last year, I passed legislation to increase the number of beds that hospice homes may have, which has helped Joliet Area Community Hospice to make services available to more people that need them.”

The expansion will improve the patient and family experience with a larger, brighter and more efficient environment. The Hospice home will add more pa-

tient beds and the central nursing station will be replaced by nursing cubbies throughout the facility so nurses can be closer to patients. The kitchen and spiritual space will be expanded, and each patient room will have a refrigerator, sink and access to a private patio.

“We gathered here 17 years ago for the first expansion of the facility,” said JACH Board of Directors Chair Geoffery Tyron.

“It’s time to refresh due to the need for more inpatient care. It’s a valuable service to the community.”

Schools raise $9K for autism program The Joliet Public Schools District 86 fourth annual Autism Awareness 5K Run/Walk.

Despite the raining conditions, more than 400 people supported the fundraiser held recently at Joliet Junior College.

The event, as well as fundraisers at the Joliet McDonald’s and Chiptotle Mexican Grill, raised $9,750.71 for the student autism programs at Marycrest Early Childhood Center, Taft Elementary, and Hufford Junior High Schools.

USF’s Scott earns named Kott Scholar Gwendolyn Scott of Pearl City, Ill., was recently named a Kott Gerontology Institute Scholar

University of St. Francis social work graduate student Gwendolyn Scott of Pearl City, Ill., was recently named a Kott Gerontology Institute Scholar.

Scott will receive a $10,000 scholarship and will participate in a 720-hour internship that she must complete between September 2019 and May 2020 at a specified agency in the Will County area. She will also participate in group meetings during the internship period and must also develop community- or agencybased projects with other interns in the program.

Scott actually learned of the opportunity through a chance conversation with her departmental advisor, Alicia McLaughlin, Ph.D. “I have to give all the credit to Dr. McLaughlin for connecting me with this opportunity,” Scott said. “I would have never even known about it if she hadn’t mentioned it in passing.”

Upon learning of the opportunity, Scott initially contemplated whether or not she was even going to apply for the program.

“The Kott program requires more clinical hours in comparison to the program I’m currently in at USF,” she said. “But then I thought that, at the end of the

A few weeks after submitting her application, Scott was notified that she had advanced in the process and was later invited to a panel interview with Kott Gerontology Institute members in Oak Park, Ill. “I met with a panel of six people, many of whom were former Kott Scholars that have since become directors at agencies in the region,” Scott said. “It certainly

didn’t feel like an interview. It was more like an exchange of ideas, which I really enjoyed. I actually ended up walking away with a lot of knowledge about those agencies that I would not have received had I not applied.”

The panel interview went as well as Scott had hoped, and she was offered a Kott Scholarship shortly thereafter.

While she has spent most of her time over the past few years working at a residential facility for children, it has been Scott’s recent experience with providing long-term care for seniors that has shifted her academic and professional focus to gerontology (the study of aging and the age-related challenges senior citizens commonly face).

“The senior population is one that is growing rapidly. Unfortunately, that population is a forgotten one, especially homeless seniors. They just need someone to care and to give them a fighting chance, and that is what I am extremely passionate about,” she said.

Scott, who is eager to complete her master’s-level social work program at USF while participating in the Kott Gerontology Scholar program, credits USF for providing her with a high-quality master’s degree experience.

“I love how USF is preparing me for the next step in my career,” Scott offered. “I love that it is a small university and that all of your professors know you. It is almost as if they are able to tailor their classes around the interests of their students. I feel like I am able to research my own professional interests, but at the same time am able to learn more about the professional interests of my classmates, too.”

“I also love that USF is so involved with the community,” Scott added. “Students in our program are placed in a wide variety of agencies in the area, and I can’t commend USF enough for that. As students, we are able to actively get our name out there with the agencies, but USF also benefits from their feedback on how well students are being prepared by USF for productive, successful careers.”

Upon earning her master’s degree in social work, Scott, also aspires to earn a gerontology certificate from USF.

HONORS Pair of local coaches tabbed as Coach of the Year by Illinois Basketball Coaches’ Association

Like always, the basketball season in the Joliet area produced several talented, winning teams — and this season, two of the teams saw its coach claim the Illinois Basketball Coaches’ Association Coach of the Year Award.

Laura Brumfiel, Joliet Central High School Brumfiel led the Steelmen to a 24-7 record and a regional championship and was named as IBCA Girls High School Basketball Coach of the Year for Class 4A, District 9.

It is her first time being honored as coach of the year.

“I am very thankful to receive the coaching award. It is a testament to how hard the entire coaching staff works to help these young ladies become successful,” she said. “All of the time and effort each of them put in is appreciated and all of our hard work is paying off.

The 24 wins were the most by a Central team since the two programs split in 2010. The Steelmen were regional champions, sectional runners-up, as well as winning the Lincoln Way Thanksgiving Tournament and finishing second in the Oswego East Holiday Tournament.

“This season was special because of the group of girls we were privileged to coach,” Brumfiel said. “This entire group has worked extremely hard and their hard work paid off this season.

They were able to accomplish many goals that were set two years ago.”

MATTHEW STORTZ, TROY MIDDLE SCHOOL Stortz, the 7th Grade girls basketball coach for Troy Middle School led the team to a 26-4 record, going 12-2 to finish second in the Des Plaines Valley Conference.

He won for IESA, Class 4A, District 9.

Troy won the Steelmen Shootout Tournament, Marian Catholic Tournament Champions.

In the IESA seventh-grade Class 4A state title game, the Titans faced undefeated Alton and lost, placing second in state.

It is Stortz’ first time being tabbed as IBCA Coach of the Year.

“This season was special as I had the opportunity to coach many of these young ladies over the past two seasons,” he said.

“The great thing about this team was that each and every one of them played a pivotal role on the team. They were all willing

to step up to the challenge when called upon and rarely got down on themselves or each other and maintained an even keel throughout every game. “The essence of this team’s showing of sportsmanship was evident all season long. One great moment was when we received a compliment after a tournament we competed in stating that Troy Middle School runs a great girls basketball program and that each of the ladies represented themselves and their school in a very respectful manner. It is a blessing to work in a district that allows me the opportunity to positively impact student lives both in and out of the classroom.

I am humbled to win the coach of the year award and was honored to be part of such a wonderful event hosted by the IBCA at Red Bird Arena.”

On the collegiate side, University of St. Francis men’s basketball coach and women’s coach Steve Brooks were named NAIA college coach of the year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

The men posted a (20-15) record on the season and fell in the second round of the NAIA Tournament.

The women were rated No. 14 and posted a 24-9 mark, losing to defending national champion Dakota Wesleyan.

Emergency fund can be filled with additional income Q. My fiancé and I just started your class, but we’re having trouble getting our beginner emergency fund together. We both work full-time, and I make $59,000 a year while he has worked in retail for several years and makes $22,000 to $25,000.

I’m trying to manage a couple of side jobs, but we just can’t seem to get our budget to work in a way that will allow us to save anything. Can you help us?

A. First of all, your finances should remain separate until you’re married. There’s shouldn’t be a “we” in terms of money at this point. You can always run a single budget that you both look at and prepare for after you’re married, but right now he shouldn’t be paying your bills and you shouldn’t be paying his bills.

The biggest problem I see is

that he’s making no money. He needs to get a better job. He can’t pay his bills, and in the process, he’s sucking you dry.

I’m sure your fiancé is a good, hard-working man, but he needs to make a serious career shift soon • like now!

In the meantime, this guy needs to take on a part-time job or two until he gets that career shifted. It’s not really a budgeting problem you’re looking at.

It’s an income issue.

Manley, Bertino-Tarrant to host community shred, prescription recycling event Recycling event on Saturday, June 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at Troy Craughwell Elementary School State Rep. Natalie Manley, DJoliet, is partnering with State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, DShorewood, to host a free community shred and prescription recycling event next month.

“Shredding documents with personally identifiable information, like tax returns, bank statements and old bills, is very important to help protect yourself from scammers and identity thieves,” said Manley. “I encourage area residents to stop by our shred day

to safely destroy their old documents for free. This is not only an opportunity to protect yourself from identity fraud, but is also a great chance to do some spring cleaning and get rid of old paperwork you no longer need.”

Local residents are encouraged to join Manley and Bertino-Tarrant’s for their free community
