Annual car show in Shorewood kicks off summer season

The wheels of summer are already spinning across the Village of Shorewood, and it brought out some vintage classics to kick off the second annual Shorewood Show and Shine Car Show on May 21.

The parking lot at Cene’s Four Seasons Park drew a crowd of spectators this year.

“It seems like it keeps growing, so that’s good,” said Luke Gundersen, recreation event coordinator for the Village of Shorewood Parks and Recreation Department.

Gundersen credits the growth of the annual car show to word of mouth.

The event drew in 99 cars last year.

This year, more than 100 cars of different shapes and sizes were polished and perfected by owners, like Dale Kleinhoffer.

“I found it on an Indian reservation in South Dakota four years ago,” the Channahon resident said of his antique Coca-Cola International Harvester Truck. “It’s a very rare car. There’s probably one car left in the country. Coca-Cola had International Harvester build them for them. During the war, Coca-Cola scrapped all the trucks from the war effort. This one was saved for some reason.”

Kleinhoffer said he made some changes to the vehicle.

“I restored the body, the cab— which is an International Harvester cab—and I fabricated the back half myself,” he said.

ways had interest in working on cars.

“I’ve done it for years and years and years,” he said. “I’m 70 years old now, and I touched my first car when I was 13.”

Kleinhoffer said winning the car show doesn’t matter to him, it’s “just a good time.”

Bill Beal, of Shorewood, brought out his 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport.

“The interior is just as you see it—it’s all original, all stock,” he said. ‘That’s original paint. The underside is all original. All I did was freshen up the engine compartment.”

Beal said he purchased the car from its original owner in Ohio.

“The guy just parked it and stopped driving it since 1978,” he said. “I pulled out the whole engine [and] went through it.”

The reason for buying the car takes him down memory lane, Beal said.

“Growing up, I had [what] they

call a second generation Camaro—that’s 1970 to 1973,” he said.

“I had several of them. When me and my wife were dating, I had one of them. Then, when I had the time and the money, I bought another one.”

Beal said attending the car show served as a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

“It’s a nice show,” he said. “We go to a lot of shows around here, and this is the one we always try to make it to.”

Each car registered for participation in the show was separated into categories based on the decade in which the model was introduced and judged accordingly.

Voting was open to both spectators and registered car show participants, with the one rule being that judges cannot vote for their own vehicle.

Prizes were offered to the winners in each division and another was extended to the car dubbed as Best in Show.

Possible new funding for Rialto To date, the theatre is on track to present 35 shows by the end of June

A new source of funding for the Rialto Square Theatre could be announced next week, Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk recently said.

The mayor’s comment followed a presentation by the theatre’s executive director and the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority Board’s chairman updating the public on progress.

The City of Joliet decided to find a long-term funding solution late last year, at which point city budget discussions focused, in part, on how to keep the downtown anchor operational.

Matters took a turn when members of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority Board resigned from their posts. By Dec. 20, the Joliet City Council approved a $500,000 allotment to the Rialto Square Theatre.

Since that time, the downtown anchor has welcomed new members to its board of directors and a new executive director.

In the past five months, the current Rialto board has accom-

plished a number of feats: securing a multi-year agreement with VenuWorks to manage theatre operations; finalizing a $600,000 loan from the Rialto Square Theatre Foundation to pay off monies owed to vendors; resuming stage performances and exhibiting involvement in community events.

The recent installation of a point of sales system allows staff to take credit cards at the bar, in addition to ensuring sales and inventory accountability.

The theatre initiated a monthly inventory of food and beverages to better control the cost of goods sold. Staff also intends to roll out an enhanced menu selection for increased ancillary sales during events.

“Since January, we have seen close to 7,500 patrons enjoy a variety of talent on the stage,” said Valerie Devine, executive director of the Rialto Square Theatre. “Please note that this number does not include the dance competitions, recitals, luncheons, weddings and other rental events.”

Rialto Board Chairman Bob Filatto recognizes the challenges the theatre continues to face and said the board must keep this in mind moving forward.

“We must balance financial risk with programming desires,” he said. “The Two Rialto North [Chicago Street] building in terms of retaining and attracting tenants is a deep, deep source of concern.

And, of course, we need to look for a dedicated long-term funding source, which is an absolute necessity.”

To date, the theatre is on track

to present 35 shows by the end of June. The agreement between the City of Joliet and the Rialto board approved late last year required at least 30 shows to permit the release of the remaining half of the theatre’s allotment.

“Looking ahead with the successful addition of Loretta Lynn, Three Dog Night and the reschedule of Olivia Newton-John, we are

anticipating another 4,500 guests and counting, as ticket sales are still selling for those performances, in addition to the many other shows—some that have not been announced,” Devine said.

O’Dekirk credited the Rialto staff and administrators for the work they’ve done.

“It’s what needed to happen there,” O’Dekirk said.

“Our law enforcement personnel see firsthand the loss of life when people refuse to buckle up,”

said Traffic Sgt. Kyle Lakomiak. “It’s such a simple thing, and it should be an automatic response when you get into a vehicle. As the Memorial Day weekend approaches and the summer vacation season ramps up, we want to make sure people are doing everything they can to stay safe in the unfortunate event of a crash.”

The most recent crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 43% of passenger vehicle oc-

cupants killed in crashes in 2015 were unrestrained. That percentage increases to 57% when looking at crashes between 6pm and 6am.

That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is nighttime enforcement. Participating police agencies will be taking a No Excuses approach. Violators will be given a ticket.

Seat belts save lives and every vehicle occupant - front seat and back, child and adult - needs to remember to buckle up, every trip, every time. Together, we can make zero fatalities a reality in Illinois.

Your help needed in locating photos of Illinois Vietnam veterans Photos needed of Illinois vets for Wall of Faces in Washington, D.C. When the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was finished in 1983, the wall listed approximately 58,000 servicemen and women who had either died in action or went missing in action during the Vietnam War. Because of a fire at a government storage facility in 1973, the U.S. military lost millions of personnel records, including many of those who were listed on the wall.

Although the military and other organizations made efforts to recover lost data, 24,000 veterans listed on the wall had no photo in their military records in 2013.

Thanks to a coordinated effort among Illinois newspapers, nearly 100 photos of Illinois veterans have been located and submitted to the Wall of Faces (available at: http:// www.vvmf.org/wall-of-faces/); however, as of May 1, Illinois still has 528 service members who do not have a photo in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund’s database.

We need your help. Below is a list of servicemen and/or women from DuPage, Will, Kendall and collar Cook counties that do not have a photo on the Wall of Faces.

Do you know any of them? Did you go to high school or serve with one of these men or women?

Check your photo archives and yearbooks.

Talk to neighbors and former classmates. Please help honor these veterans by putting a face to the name.

According to the VVMF, the wall was constructed to remind everyone that the names on the wall “represent unique people with hopes, dreams and desires—people who were loved and who are missed every day by someone they left behind.”

“It is important for us to honor

these people who served and sacrificed for their country. But, we should also remember that they were people, just like us. They enjoyed crazy adventures with high school friends.

They had crushes, fell in love and got married. Some even had children. They were people with special talents and many goals. There are so many stories on The Wall—stories of people as diverse as our nation itself.”

Please help honor these young men and women who gave their lives in Southeast Asia.

The first step to telling their stories is to locate their photos.

CHARLESTON – Heading into the state track and field meet, Joliet West’s Melzina Johnson had posted jumps in the 17feet range all season in the long jump.

During Friday’s preliminaries, however, she uncorked the best jump of her career at the right time.

Johnson went 18-feet, 11.50-inches and claimed fourth place at the Class 3A finals in O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

“This is a huge accomplishment and I am really proud of myself. I came here felling really confident,” Johnson said. “I had to give it all I had both days and (Friday) I really got the big jump. Johnson becomes the highest finisher in the event in Joliet West history and first long jump medalist since Kim Whitener took seventh in 1988. Johnson tied Joliet Township’s Josie Hobbs in 1994 with her fourthplace medal.

Another first for the Tigers was West senior Lataydra Thompson taking seventh in the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 15.54.

She becomes the first Tiger ever to place in the event. As a combined program, the event saw medalists five times, most recently in 2005 when Megan Thompson placed third, but no one had ever done it donning the black and gold.

Not to be outdone, Lockport set a new school standard, placing the 4x400 relay at state for the first time.

Most successful softball season ends University of St. Francis’ most successful softball season in the 38-year history of the program came to an end Wednesday afternoon when No. 4-seeded Indiana Wesleyan University completed its sweep of the NAIA National Tournament – Opening Round Bowling Green Bracket field with its 6-3 victory over the Saints.

With the win, the Wildcats (4413) advance to the NAIA World Series May 26-June 1.

“Coach ( Joe) Kravitz started tearing up and he told us that he has never had the 4x400 a team go to finals and that is his favorite event,” Greci said.

Just a few races prior to the 4x400, Greci went out and earned a fourth place in the open 400 with a time of 56.83.

She is also the first Porter to ever medal in the event.

“I never expected to be here in my senior year running two 400s and I am so completely happy and I can’t stop smiling,” Greci said.

Minooka senior Mackenzie Callahan made history of her own, becoming the first Indian to medal in the 1600 run, as she placed second in the race in 4:54.22.

“Going into the race, I was a little nervous because these girls are really fast, but (Coach Kevin) Gummerson has reinforced in me that I can run with the best and I am one of the best,” she said. “I had a general outline is what I wanted to happen, but I just wanted to put myself in the race and see what happened.

I knew I wanted to close really hard and I felt I did that.

In the 100 dash, Johnson ran a 12.24, while Greci posted a 12.22.

In the 800 run, Isom ran a 2:23.76, while in the 1600 run Bollinger posted a 5:02.49 and Minooka junior Emily Shelton ran a 5:01.07, while in the 200 dash Greci had a time of 25.46 and Mathius a 26.01.

Darling leads Saints’ award winners Led by first-team selection Dan Darling (Coal City, Ill./ Coal City), four University of St. Francis baseball players were recognized when the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its postseason honor roll for the diamond sport.

Darling was joined by teammates Kevin Mampe (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way Central) and John Riordan (Chicago, Ill./ St. Laurence) as all-conference second-team choices.

Senior

third baseman Nick Fleischauer (Shorewood, Ill./ Minooka) garnered distinction on the league’s Gold Glove Team.

Darling, a senior catcher/relief pitcher, earned his spot on the first team after leading the league in saves with ten during the regular season. He also appeared in the fourth-most games with 18.

Darling went 4-1 with a 1.85 earned run average in those appearances and limited the oppo-

sition to a .227 batting average.

In 24 1/3 innings, he allowed only five earned runs.

Like Darling, Mampe also served in dual roles as both a second baseman and starting pitcher. He earned his plaudits at second base, where he hit .317 during the regular season with team-leading numbers in on-base percentage (.431), runs batted in (31), doubles (14) and home runs (3). He was also second on the club in slugging per-

centage (.467), hits (53) and total bases (78) and tied for second in runs scored with 34.

On the mound, Mampe went 4-6 with a 3.31 earned run average and a club-high 50 strikeouts.

It marked the second straight year in which Mampe was recognized by the conference coaches, earning first-team accolades last spring as a sophomore.

Riordan was recognized among the pitching ranks with a 6-1 regular-season record and

a 2.73 earned run average. In 52 2/3 innings, the sophomore right-hander allowed only 35 hits with the opposition being held to a .187 batting average.

Fleischauer turned in a .922 fielding average at the hot corner converting 83 of his 90 chances to gain Gold Glove status. Offensively, he drove in 19 runs, fourth most on the team.

The Saints went 33-26 for the season, including 14-13 in league play.

Lockport Class of 2017 valedictorians, salutatorian named Two graduating seniors at Lockport Township High School tied for top honors for the Class of 2017 and have been named valedictorians – Brendan O’Dwyer and Mary Kate Buchheit. Tomi Jo Mansell has been named salutatorian and all will be honored at the graduation ceremony on June 3.

O’Dwyer said he is thrilled to be co-valedictorians of Lockport Township High School’s Class of 2017 with Mary Kate and he would also like to congratulate Tomi Jo on being named salutatorian.

O’Dwyer enjoyed his time at LTHS, spending two years with the baseball program, two years on the math team, and four years forming close relationships with friends as well as teachers that he will never forget. He also loved participating in community service events for the National Honor Society, tutoring sophomore students during his senior study hall, and spending time with his brother, Dylan, throughout all of his time at Lockport.

BY OLIVIA APOSTOLOVSKI, JWHS Student Journalist Joliet West High School seniors Franco Rota and Jada Brand were recently awarded the prestigious title of Mr. and Miss Alpha Omega for the 2016-2017 school year at the Senior Awards Ceremony held on May 10.

The Mr. and Miss Alpha Omega contest is an annual event sponsored by the yearbook that names the best all-around senior boy and girl. This is an honored and longstanding tradition of JTHS history and the winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship and will have the opportunity to be the speakers

O’Dwyer expressed gratitude towards all of his friends for supporting him throughout all of high school and is also very appreciative for the instruction, direction, and advice he has received from his teachers, guidance counselors, and coaches.

Most importantly, O”Dwyer would like to sincerely thank not only his parents for their loving support, guidance, and encouragement, but also his brother for always being able to make him happy. These people are what made his experience at Lockport so rewarding, memorable, and truly special. Brendan will never forget his time spent here, and he is excited to see what he and all of his fellow classmates will accomplish in the future.

Because of a hearing impairment since the age of two, Buchheit’s journey to become co-valedictorian was a struggle, but with the help from dedicated teachers and speech pathologists, as well as a strong work ethic, she began to succeed academically. By her senior year, Buccheit was named an Illinois State Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction.

Outside of the classroom, Buchheit enjoyed her roles as NHS secretary and Vice President of the Science Club, competing in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Competition for

two years and qualifying at the national level in the Chemistry Olympiad.

A Porter Pride recipient, Buchheit has been a four-year varsity tennis member and co-captain her senior year, qualifying twice for state and twice earning the Sportsmanship Award. Her journey coming full circle as Buccheit plans to study speech and hearing science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Tomi Jo Mansell is very grateful to be Lockport Township’s Class of 2017 Salutatorian. She has deeply enjoyed her last four years here at LTHS, playing tennis all four years and being involved in various other programs her most memorable being the JKB Student Athlete Leadership Program and ACES Adaptive P.E. Class.

Mansell will be attending the University of Notre Dame in the fall, pursuing a major in pre-professional studies, on the pre-med track with an interdisciplinary minor in science, technology, and values.

Mansell is passionate about working with children and wishes to be a pediatrician, helping children live healthy lives each day. She accredits her supportive teachers and mentors, loving family, and endearing friends for making her four years at LTHS so special and wishes the best of luck to her classmates as she knows they will all go on to do amazing things.

It was then narrowed down to 100 students and the staff completed a survey to evaluate them on their character, service, leadership and academics,” said sponsor Jennifer Galloy.

The selected students are then required to participate in the Student Ambassador program, which emphasizes leadership and service, and must complete an extensive resume, cover letter and have two letters of recommendation. Resumes are sent off to a panel of judges who represent the Joliet community.

The judges then interviewed the top thirteen students and award points based on leadership, poise, maturity and commitment to Joliet West and the community. The winners were determined solely on the resume and interview.

Both Brand and Rota have had

packed schedules full of Honors and Advanced Placement classes during their time at West and have been active in many clubs as well such as National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Student Ambassadors. Although they are similar scholastically, both of them are unique in their own ways.

Brand has been an active participant in AP classes and has won many awards throughout the duration of her academic career, some of which include Top 25 Student, Illinois State Scholar, AP Scholar with Honors and Freshmen/Sophomore Academic Achievement. On top of these awards, Brand is an active member of numerous clubs, which include the ones listed above as well as Tri-M, Y.M.C.A. Young Achievers and Key Club. He’s a got a good heart, and it’s probably a reflection of the way his mom and dad are raising him. I like this a lot.

I would very gently, and without any commanding or control verbiage, use some examples from the Bible when talking to him. There are several things to be learned about money from Scripture, and the concepts of generosity and giving are in there. There’s also a verse that says we need to take care of our own households first. Another one says in the house of the wise are stores of food and oil.

We need to do all of these things with money — in balance.

that. Now, if you honestly can’t pay the bill, and you have to settle upon a mutually agreed upon amount with the creditor or collector, then it’s okay at that point to try and reach a settlement.

Hundreds honored at 2017 Salute to Service Event is held to thank JTHS partners who generously volunteer their service and time to benefit students Over 350 were in attendance to recognize Joliet Township High School partners and volunteers at the Salute to Service Partnership Event on May 2 at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet.

The annual event is held to thank JTHS partners who generously volunteer their service and time to benefit the students and high school. Over 500 invitations were sent to JTHS partners.

At the event, JTHS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl McCarthy presented the prestigious Superintendent’s Medallion to Sue Pritz Bornhofen of the Jacob Henry Mansion Estate; Betty & Reverend Lishers Mahone; Joliet Junior College; and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Will & Grundy County.

The prestigious Superintendent’s Medallion is Joliet Township High School’s highest honor awarded for extensive service, dedication, and/or financial contributions.

Joliet Central High School alumna, Sue Pritz Bornhofen, Class of 1977, graciously opens the doors of the Jacob Henry Mansion in a way that transcends brick and mortar.

Every year, Sue reaches out personally to the high school to offer employment JTHS students.

For the students who work at the mansion, the lessons they learn go beyond service and soft skills such as timeliness or attendance.

In addition, Sue eliminates economic barriers that so often exist for families in our community, from donating space, to sponsoring and adjusting prices so that all students and families can attend recognition events.

Betty and Reverend Lishers Mahone have set an incredible and inspiring example of service and leadership in engaging, guiding and energizing students to become active participants in their own education.

The Mahones have dedicated their lives to the betterment of the Joliet community by establishing the Betty Mahone Historically Black College Fair and by sharing their time and talents in the Joliet Regional Interfaith Committee, among other incredible causes.

Under the leadership of JJC President Dr. Judy Mitchell and the Board of Trustees – Patty Deiters, Alicia Morales, Maureen Broderick, Mike O’Connell, Bob Wunderlich, Dan O’Connell and Andy Mihelich – Joliet Junior College delivers quality learning opportunities, empowering JTHS students and the community through academic excellence, workforce training, and comprehensive support services.

They have been an integral partner in offering engaging college & career readiness opportunities for JTHS students through dual credit courses, advisory board initiatives,

Mentor2.0 is simple in concept, but life changing in reality.

Students meet twice a week during their advisory period with BBBS staff and talk about preparing for their next-steps after high school.

This includes college selection, financial aid, scholarship searches, career activities, and so much more.

Also during this time, they correspond weekly with their mentor via a secure platform.

In the email, they take the topic they discussed in advisory and apply it to their own life and receive feedback and guidance from their mentor. BBBS Coordinators Court-

“It is truly humbling to know that we have so many dedicated and supportive community members and volunteers that believe in giving back to our students and schools,” said JTHS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl McCarthy. “I am so grateful for their support.”

JTHS students contributed to the night’s success.

Photography services were provided by Joliet West student photographers, JROTC students posted colors, JTHS student ambassadors provided guest assistance, and classical music was performed by the JTHS Orchestra.
