Troy bands win IGSMA honors, invitation to SuperState

The Troy Middle School sixth grade band, directed by Jennifer Carlton, and the symphonic band, directed by William Goetz, earned Honor Band status at the Illinois Grade School Music Association State contest. Fourteen middle school bands from across the state gathered at Troy Middle School to compete in the April 23 competitive state music contest.

Troy Band Boosters worked hard to gather parent and local high school volunteers in support of the event. Hosting IGSMA is a major fundraiser for the Boosters through sales of concessions, programs, event T-shirts and colorful paper flowers.

The Symphonic Band is also excited for their upcoming Illinois SuperState Contest Band Festival trip on May 6. The Symphonic

Band was selected to join 10 middle school bands performing at this prestigious event hosted by The University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign.

Troy Crossroads students experience farm life right at school Preschool students at Troy Crossroads Elementary School recently got a taste of farm life with the school’s Side-by-Side Parent Activity Day, “Farm Experience.”

The students were able to strip kernels off corn cobs using an

antique 1851 corn sheller, grind the kernels into cornmeal with an 1885 corn mill, and sit in the driver’s seat of a 1948 red Ford tractor. They also learned how apples grow from apple seeds and helped core an apple.

Students saw heavy cream being churned into butter and could take a lima bean seed house home with them to watch a plant grow.

The highlight of the day was holding the small chicks, which had just hatched from eggs preschool teacher Teresa Fierke brought into her classroom. The chick brooder was located in the room’s art center, Fierke said, and while it was there, the children enjoyed showing their art projects to the hatchlings.

The machines were brought in

by Fierke’s father, Bruce, and her mother, Kathy, helped the students hold the chicks.

Forest preserve’s ‘Trail Safety Days’ begin May 21 Program designed to instill ‘safety first’ attitude among trail users Submitted Photo

Pediatric oncology foundation honors Joliet girl during annual Treasuring Our Kids fundraiser Bugle Staff Five years ago, 4-year-old Joliet resident Mya Tinajero began longterm treatment for neuroblastoma.

Her treatment included chemotherapy and numerous painful procedures, but Mya and her family found some relief in the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation.

Last month, the foundation honored the Joliet girl during its seventh annual Treasuring Our Kids Decades of Success event.

Mya, now 9, served as the honorary chairperson of the April 2 fundraiser, which raised more than $31,000 to benefit childhood cancer patients.

During a heartfelt speech, Antonio Tinajero gave attendees a unique look at the hardships faced by the family after his daughter received her cancer diagnosis. Mya was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was just 4 years old. Part of the family’s coping ability came from Mya’s visits to select a toy from the treasure chest after each visit.

Services offered by POTCF impact more than 9,300 young cancer patients each month, according to the foundation. Nowhere else in the nation does such a program exist.

In 1996, Colleen Kisel founded POTCF three years after her then 7-year-old son Martin was diagnosed with leukemia. She

discovered that giving her son a toy after each procedure provided a calming distraction from his pain, noting that when children are diagnosed with cancer their world soon becomes filled with doctors, nurses, chemotherapy drugs, surgeries and seemingly endless painful procedures.

Martin celebrated his 23rd anniversary of remission from the disease earlier this year.

Nearly 250 people attended the annual Treasuring Our Kids event, held at Gaelic Park in Oak Forest.

The fundraiser included a buffet dinner and musical entertainment, along with silent and live auctions and raffles.

If you run, walk or ride on the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s 127 miles of trails or plan to do so in the future, the district is encouraging you to attend a new “Trail Safety Days” program.

The forest preserve said it created this special program to instill a “safety first” attitude among trail users. It will be offered at three preserve locations in May, August and October. All three sessions will last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The first will be held May 21 at Rock Run Preserve – Black Road Access, located west of Essington Road in Joliet.

In-line skaters, walkers, wildlife watchers, runners and cyclists are invited to attend one of these events to learn how to share trails safely. Personal best practices, sharpening trail awareness and rules of trail

usage will be explored.

A different community smallbusiness partner will be on site at each event with activities and merchandise. Partners include Sumbaum Cycle of Joliet and FnA Bicycles of New Lenox. Plenty of giveaways will be available.

Forest preserve police will also be present to talk with trail users and answer questions from the public.

Registration is not required for this free, all-ages event.

LTHS graduate wins first place broadcast news competition award Zach Bernard won a first place Best News Series Associated Press Award for his five-piece story titled, “The Five Year Fix: Improving Wellness and Decreasing Poverty in Fort Wayne.”

The award was presented to Bernard at the Associated Press Awards dinner in Indianapolis

April 30. He currently is employed as a radio broadcaster and web news journalist for the National Public Radio station, WBOI–89.1 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Bernard graduated from Lockport Township High School in 2010 and was a resident of Lockport before taking a radio broadcasting job in Fort Wayne. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism and political science at Illinois State University.

Department begins swimming facility inspections Environmental health personnel inspect all recreational venues Will County’s 133 public swimming facilities and 12 bathing beaches traditionally open for business during Memorial Day weekend, and the Will County Health Department said it will begin inspections to ensure each venue is ready.

Will County Environmental Health personnel currently inspect each local recreational water venue to ensure compliance with the Illinois Swimming Facility Act and code. The state inspection form for

public pools lists 80 items requiring attention, and the inspection for every local beach facility includes 42 items.

Although the state requires just one annual inspection, provisions of the Will County Public Swimming Facility Ordinance authorize additional visits designed to ensure health and safety. Outdoor public pools are typically inspected by the health department monthly and are evaluated with the help of a 24item inspection form.

Indoor water facilities are inspected at least once every 60 days during warmer weather and monthly once temperatures begin to drop. Beaches are inspected at least twice monthly during summer.

Will County sanitarians spent

685 work hours inspecting public pools, spas, wading pools, water slides, spray pads and lazy river facilities during 2015, according to the health department. Those numbers included 322 follow-up inspections to make sure that any problems found during initial site visits were corrected.

The department said staff spent more than 70 additional work hours on beach inspections and sampling. Staff collected 186 beach water samples for bacteriological analysis, but the amount of inspection time devoted to each facility hinges on several factors.

“Facilities with multiple features, like lazy rivers, water slides and spas, require additional inspection time,” the department’s administrative services director, Elizabeth Bilotta,

More than 60 percent of illnesses linked to swimming pools, water parks and beaches are caused by cryptosporidium – a chlorine-

resistant parasite that can produce diarrhea, cramps, nausea and fever.

Most people with healthy immune systems will recover in a few days without treatment.

However, dehydration caused by recreational water illness can be serious for infants, children, pregnant women and individuals with compromised immunity.

When reading Robert Frost’s classic poem “The Road Not Taken,” it’s tempting to see only one simple message in his words. As Frost comes to a fork in his path, he chooses the one that appears less worn, less chosen by others.

Doing so, in his own view, makes all the difference.

Readers tend to see this as an ode to going your own way, which is important.

At the same time, it is equally important that the author is making a choice at all, in large part because he must; the path has forced his hand. From the place where the roads of life diverge, we can all choose the new path we will take.

Making changes is hard. As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, there is a typical series of stages that we all encounter on our way to lasting change, beginning with the point where we aren’t thinking about it or we just don’t want to do it, and culminating in a permanent lifestyle alteration. To get to the other side of the change hurdle, remember there’s many ways from here to there.

When others can relate to the struggles we experience, they tend to offer advice that mirrors what they did in a similar situation. Despite their good intentions, our friends and loved ones might be setting up a vicious game called “Why don’t you? / Yeah, but…” that never ends well. This game starts with a seemingly helpful suggestion, such as “Why don’t you start running every day” in response to a person expressing their desire to lose weight. The reply then comes back, “Yeah, but my knees are bad and I don’t have good shoes.” More ideas are piled on in search of the key that will fit the situation. After a few more rounds of this,

both people grow frustrated, nothing has changed and there are no winners.

But, all is not lost. We can take a cue from Malcolm Gladwell, an author and cultural observer who looks for unique stories that contain hidden truths about our lives. One of his stories involves Howard Moscowitz – one of the most influential market researchers in the food industry.

Moscowitz was once hired by spaghetti sauce manufacturer Prego to determine the ideal sauce for consumers because they were losing market share to Ragu.

What Moscowitz discovered is that there is no such thing as one perfect sauce – a conclusion identical to what he reported to Pepsi years earlier when asked to identify the perfect level of soda sweetness.

What Prego and Pepsi hoped to discover was the one magical formula that could please everyone. However, the reality was more complicated.

Rather than one sauce to meet the tastes of millions of people, there needs to be many different sauces and even more different flavors of soda.

So how does that help any of us, aside from filling local store shelves with dozens of choices?

What it means is that when we are dealing with turning points, life transitions and other challenges, there are many possible pathways.

Looking to role models for paths to success can be useful. Patterns of thinking and acting that have worked for others might also prove effective for us.

Not always, though, and probably not in the exact same way.

Adaptability is one of the great human traits, so use it to your full advantage.

Rather than focusing on what doesn’t work, such as trying to run if you are the person with bad knees, look at what you can do. And instead of emphasizing the laundry list of obstacles that you can’t change, put your attention on what you can control.

keeP coMinG BAck Three final points to consider. One, starting with baby steps works best.

Small changes tend to snowball into larger changes. Even a slight shift in our daily routine can produce significant changes in mood and behavior.

Secondly, whereas Robert Frost doubted that he would ever return to the same point in the road, we ourselves often face similar difficulties repeatedly, and that’s OK. If what we tried before didn’t work, we have 19 or more other solutions to try. Finally, as lonely as the journey might seem at times, we are all in good company. The fears, hopes, dreams and joys of life are universal; shared by all of the travelers on a road together.

The Joliet West 4x100-meter relay team came into the Ottawa Sectional meet with the highest seed time.

While the Tiger quartet of Brandy Teague, Shyasia Baker, Kristine Bourg and Melzina Johnson were unable to win the race Thursday, they were able to take second and qualify for state with a time of 49.11.

“It feels really good, especially with it being my senior year,” Bourg said.

“Last year was my first year of track and made it down last year and with everyone returning and making it back down again is the cherry on top.”

“I’m so excited,” Baker said. “We ran as hard as we could. Our team gets along really well and we’re going to do really good at state.”

They hope to improve their handoffs to make it to the state finals, which would guarantee them a medal. State is Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

“It is pretty exciting,” Teague said.

“I hope we peak next week because it has never been perfect, so hopefully next week it is. The goal is to medal.

We need to get better handoffs.”

Johnson also qualified individually in a pair of events, advancing in the long jump (17-feet, 8.75-inches) and 100 (12.28).

“I’m most proud of the long jump,” Johnson said. “We have six jumps and it took me my last jump to qualify.

I’m real proud of that. It feels good to

qualify in the 100 for the first time and am excited about that.”

While she has two chances to medal individually at state, Johnson feels the relay is her best chance.

“I want to leave Charleston with a medal around my neck,” Johnson said. “I’m really confident with the 4x1. I love it and we all give it all we got. We want to surprise everybody.”

•The Minooka distance team garners the headlines after winning state in cross country, but it was Brooklyn Bachmann in the pole vault who came through with a personal record in the pole vault to advance to state for the first time, finishing with a vault of 10-6.

“Coming out here today I really wanted to get 10-3, which is three inches above my PR,” Bachmann said. “I wasn’t sure at first with the wind, but once I got my jumps in and everyone was supportive, I knew I was going to qualify for state, and when I did, it was probably one of the best feelings of my life.”

The three-sport athlete is going to enjoy her trip to the state meet and hopes to set a new mark.

“A PR at state would be really nice,” Bachmann said. “But I’m going to state for the experience and I want to compete. Whatever happens, happens, I’m just glad I made it down there.”

Emily Shelton has high hopes for state and after her performance at the sectional, she should.

Area teams set to do battle as the IHSA playoffs open

With the IHSA state pairings being released last week, local teams see their road to the dream of a state title.

For Lockport, that road begins in Minooka.

The Porters are the No. 5 seed in their own sectional complex and open play Thursday, May 26 against No. 12 Crete-Monee, with the winner facing the winner of No. 4 Lincoln-Way East and No. 13 Minooka for the regional title. That game would be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28.

The road for the Porters this season has been an up and down one that has had runs of losing and winning.

“There was one week we dropped four in a row and in that week, we had Andrew who we lost in extra innings and Providence who hadn’t lost yet and Lincoln-Way East and Schaumburg,” said Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec. “It was a rough week and defensively, we weren’t very strong that week.”

After a bad stretch, the Porters went on a run that got the team on the right path and gave the team confidence.

“Then for two weeks, we played pretty solid and we have played very well defensively and performed well on the mound,” Chovanec said. “During that run, we had all three working – the pitching, defense and hitting – but we reminded them it’s a journey, not a sprint and we still have to improve on some things.”

In order to claim a sectional title, the Porters will have to play as they did during their good stretches, as they will most likely face a LincolnWay East team that has their number this season.

Halle Hollatz and Lockport are the No. 5 seed in their own sectional.

Lockport fell to the Griffins twice this season, both by one run, with the most recent coming May 9 in a 4-3 loss.

In that game, Justine Cielenski allowed only one hit and no earned runs, while walking one in 2 1/3 innings of work in relief of Bailey Delrose who started and lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, while walking one and striking out three.

The Porters did follow that up with a pair of 10-run rule wins, defeating Stagg 10-0 and Joliet Central 17-1.

Against Stagg, Emily Dybas was 2 –for-3 with a pair of RBI, while Delrose also drove in two on one hit. Cielenski earned the win striking out six in the five-inning game.

In the blowout of Joliet West, Halle Hollatz was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Getting her going offensively heading into the playoffs could be key to the Porters, as she has been in a self-admitted slump.

“This season has not been my best offensively,” she said. “I just haven’t been hitting well this year.”

If Hollatz gets going and the rest of the Porters do what they have shown is possible, they believe they can make a run in the postseason.

“The first part of the season we didn’t do too well and we lost games we shouldn’t have that we lost ourselves with errors, but we went on a win streak and that was good,” Hollatz said. “I think we will do good in the postseason.”

Joliet West is the No. 8 seed on the Lockport Sectional and hosts the regional, where it will face No. 9 TF South May 25.

Joliet Central is the No. 15 seed and has a play-in game May 23 against Thornwood with the winner facing No. 2 Lincoln-Way North.

In Class 3A, Joliet Catholic Academy is the No. 6 seed in the Bishop McNamara Sectional.

The Angels will host the regional and open play May 23 against No. 6 Plano. The winner will play No. 3 McNamara.

Tigers learning during an up and down season

The 22-25, 26-24, 25-27 loss to Bolingbrook last week was a match that epitomized the season for the Joliet West boys volleyball team this season.

“We have been up and down,” said West coach Jason Herrmann.

“We are 15-11, so we are still above .500. I would have liked for us to push a little more and take that match. I didn’t want to have to go three today. We needed more solid passing at the end of the game and get the ball to our big guy. But, it’s OK, we will keep working and keep plugging away.”

Herrmann said the loss will not come without its lessons.

“We will learn from games like today,” he said. “Maybe I would call a timeout sooner, but I try and give my guys some leeway and I have that luxury now. Yeah, it is conference, but it is what it is.

I have to see how far we can push them. Our sophomore outside getting the swings out there, that is only going to make him better in two or three weeks when we are hopefully fighting for a regional championship.”

Herrmann believes a regional title is within the Tigers’ reach.

West is the No. 7 seed in the Lincoln-Way East Sectional. The Tigers will open play Mon. May 23 against No. 9 Plainfield South.

“We have a nice path again in regionals,” Herrmann said. “We have Plainfield South and then if we win that one, we have Minooka and then we would get the winner

Badminton duo finishes fifth at state tournament Lockport’s doubles team of Jessica Miller and Haley Egelhof had a great showing at the state badminton meet, placing fifth in the state at the badminton state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

In the fifth place match they defeated Hinsdale Central 21-9, 21-17.

The duo started play with a 2110, 21-6 win over Oak Park-River Forest and followed it up with wins over Wheaton Warrenville South (21-9, 21-13) and New Trier (21-18, 21-19).

They fell for the first time in the quarterfinals, 21-23, 21-13, 21-14 to Naperville North, but rebounded in the consolation quarters to top Lincoln-Way West 21-16, 21-19. In the semifinals

they beat Buffalo Grove 20-22, 2119, 21-14.

The other Porters doubles team of Alexis Duda and McKenzie Ebel went 0-2 at state.

In singles, Hannah Burke went 2-2, defeating Annie Carmody of Oswego East 17-21, 21-16, 21-16 and Allison Drechny of Andrew 21-19, 21-19 to open play.

She then fell to Lauren Ho of Neuqua Valley 21-3, 21-7 and Honor Crandell of Hinsdale Central 21-16, 12-21, 21-10.

Jenna Franzen went 1-2 at state, opening with a 21-12, 21-17 loss to Emily Tunney of Sandburg before coming back with a 17-21, 21-17, 22-20 win over Lake Forest. She finished with a 15-21, 21-13, 21-11 loss to Maggie Tierney.

•Joliet West’s doubles team

of Kortnie Hammac and Regan Kinser went 0-2 at the state meet.

BOYS TRACK Minooka took home the Southwest Prairie Conference title with 149 points, besting Plainfield North, which was second with 84.

Winners for the Indians were Marcus Hayden in the pole vault (13-feet, 7-inches), Kevin Lam in the shot put (51-7), Steve Lasinis in the triple jump (42-11), the 4x200-meter relay (1:29.27), Justin Wolz in the 110 hurdles (15.37) and 300 hurdles (39.65) and Soren Knudsen in the 3200 (9:40.52) and 1600 (4:22.94).

and 9-0. The Hillmen did bounce back to beat St. Patrick 5-1. Drake Fellows went six innings, not allowing a hit with one unearned run, striking out eight. Justin Conant had three hits, while KC Simonich added two hits and Jack Surin had two RBI. •Joliet Central dropped a pair to Stagg, 9-0 and 12-3. Jesus Gonzalez and Ricky Malmfeldt both had two hits in the 12-3 defeat.

•Lockport opened the week with a 7-0 win over Joliet Central. Ryan Gabriel went six innings allowing three hits. Gavin Lovesky had a pair of hits with a home run and Stephen Hill had a pair of hits with a double.

The Porters then topped Sandburg 7-1 as Ben Davis went the distance, allowing six hits

and one unearned run with six strikeouts. Joey McGuire had two hits at the plate.

After a 3-1 non conference win over Aurora Christian, Lockport fell to Sandburg 2-1.

The Porters topped Elk Grove 4-1 as Josh Bentley had a pair of hits with a double.

•Minooka was swept by Oswego, falling 7-5 in 10 innings in the first game. Jackson Shepard and Luke Faifer each had a pair of hits in defeat. Logan O’Brien had a double and two RBI. The second game was a 3-2 loss as Jon Butler had two hits.

The Indians allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose 4-3 in the finale. Faifer and Brandon Rossiter each had two hits.

The Porters advanced the 800-meter relay team Jaclyn Greci, Jacqueline Mathius, Tori Aguilar and Grace Gliwa, who placed second in a time of 1 minute, 43.63 seconds.

Gerci also advanced in the 200 dash in a time of 25.65 seconds, placing fourth.

Carolyn Dietz won the sectional title in the pole vault with a leap of 10-feet, 3-inches, while Drew Litynski advanced in the triple jump with a fifth-place leap of 36-05.

Junior Morgan Bollinger won the sectional title in the 3200 run in 11:21.78, defeating Downers Grove South’s Katie Stapleton.

Bollinger is advancing to state for the third straight season, advancing for the first time since her freshman year.

“Last year, our 4x800 relay advanced and I made it in the 1600 as a freshman,” she said. “It feels really awesome to win. I was sick all this week, so I was pretty nervous going

Center for Economic Development celebrates 35 years

CED will use anniversary to create greater visibility for offered services

This year, the Will County Center for Economic Development will celebrate its 35th anniversary, and staff plan to use the milestone to promote the various services offered by the organization.

“Most economic development organizations never see a 35th birthday,” CED President and CEO John Greuling said. “It’s just hard to sustain a local development effort through economic and political cycles over that period of time. The longevity speaks to the CED’s leadership and success in attracting and retaining jobs for Will County.”

Scott Paddock, president of Chicagoland Speedway and current chairman of the CED’s board said the center is excited to celebrate the milestone and

continue to guide Will County’s economic direction.

The CED will use the 35th anniversary to create greater visibility for the services it offers in 37 Will County municipalities and to more than 200 investor organizations.

Plans include spotlighting business success stories, and sharing milestones that marked the trajectory of the county’s economic growth in local and electronic media.

The CED will also host signature events, including an Eye Opener breakfast June 23 and a festive 35th anniversary celebration this fall.

A special 35th anniversary logo has also been created to brand all CED communications.

“We would not be celebrating 35 years without the support of our private and public Investors,” Greuling said. “They deserve the credit for all of the CED’s successes.”

Try negotiating a settlement on old debt Dear Dave, I’ve had a judgment filed against me for an old, unpaid medical bill.

The original amount was $2,500, but now it has increased to $3,200. Can I negotiate this with the lawyer? I’ve asked him for a detailed statement of the account several times, but all I’ve gotten is a payment booklet.

Bill Dear Bill, When it comes to paying off bills or debt, you should always pay what’s owed if you have the money.

There’s a moral, as well as legal, responsibility involved. That being said, if you don’t have $3,200, offer him whatever you’ve got — $2,000 or the original $2,500 as a settlement.

Make sure he understands that you’re not offering to pay the amount you have on the debt, but that it’s being offered as settlement in full if the debt is cleared.

The reason you haven’t gotten

what you’ve asked for so far is you may have been talking to some lowlevel staffer or paralegal. If you have been talking directly to the lawyer, then he’s probably running a small debt collections or debt lawsuit machine. That means you’re just one of dozens of widgets coming down the line. To you, this is very personal. But to him, you’re just another account. You might have to do something to get his attention and wake him up. If this is the case, he probably gets a piece of whatever he collects. So, if he gets a third of $2,000 or $2,500 it might make his house payment this month.

You could also talk to the hospital administrator, too, and let them know you’ll bring a couple thousand down there today if they’ll accept it as payment in full. At this point, you’ve just got to do something to get off the conveyor belt!

Annuities for longterm retirement?

Dear Dave, Are annuities good for long-term retirement?

Quincy Dear Quincy, The short answer is no. There might be a rare exception when I’d use a variable annuity — which is a mutual fund inside of an annuity — but as a rule I don’t use annuities.

And I certainly don’t use fixed annuities for anything, because they’re just crap. Basically, they’re a CD with a huge set of fees. It’s just an insurance agent’s product, really.

The place for variable annuities might be when you’ve got everything else maxed out and your house is paid off. If you’ve reached that point, you can talk to your advisor about some of the possible benefits

of a variable annuity. You can leave a beneficiary on it, so that it passes outside of probate, and you’ve got some principle guarantees and return guarantees that are decent.

The returns are a little lower, though, because you’ll get hit with both the annuity fee and the mutual fund fee. So, by and large the answer is no for most people, because they don’t have their house paid off and aren’t maxing out all other retirement options. If you’re doing all that, and you want to do something in this area, then I might think about it.

Seeing through color Blind artist brings exhibit on light and dark to Joliet’s Gallery Seven

The world can oftentimes be viewed as a dark place to venture through alone, and some may find themselves disillusioned by their circumstances.

In the case of two artists seeking to confront the plight of light and dark, the idea of disability is nothing but a diagnosis.

Gallery Seven in Joliet is hosting a two-person art exhibit “Enlightening: A Show of Color in the Dark.” The showcase features the artwork of Joliet resident Dr. Rita Rogan, a clinical psychologist, and John Bramblitt, of Venton, Texas, an artist who is blind.

Rogan said the idea for the exhibit came to her after reading Bramblitt’s book “Shouting in the Dark: My Journey Back to the Light.”

“It just opens up an entirely new space in your world,” she said.

In doing so, Rogan sent Bramblitt an email inquiring about the idea of bringing his eye for art to Joliet. A week and a half later and much to her surprise, the original idea of a one-person exhibit started to evolve into a two-person show.

Rogan noted how her curiosity for learning about the inner workings of the mind sparked her longtime passion for the arts, which is exhibited in the showcase.

“The odd intersection here is with the paintings that I’m exhibiting,” she said. “There is a challenge for an artist to find ways to paint the night; paint in the dark. Here are the two of us both painting in the dark, having really brightly colored paintings.”

Bramblitt said he hopes the exhibit touches the lives of others, regardless of what challenges they

face.

“Everybody has things they can do and they can’t do,” he said. “The wonderful thing about art is that it makes you focus on the things you can do.”

After losing his vision, Bramblitt used to feel as though there was a disconnect between himself and rest of the world. But now, he said he feels more connected to others.

In 2001, Bramblitt lost his eyesight due to complications with epilepsy.

He stopped making artwork, and said he started experiencing some

anger and depression during this time.

Bramblitt started to reclaim his artistic stroke about a year later, which he credits for helping him feel better.

“I started drawing in a way that I can feel the lines,” he said, describing the way in which he has adapted his creative process to allow him to paint without eyesight.

With one hand, he uses his sense of touch to distinguish between the textures of various colors. With the other, he paints.

Bramblitt added that he began focusing more on the paint at the end of the brush, and stopped thinking about what he had lost or worrying about the future.

“It forced me to look at life in a different sort of way,” he said.

“There’s more color in my life than ever.”

Rogan said she hopes that the people who view their work will find inspiration.

“I think that John Bramblitt is helping us to see something that we had not seen before,” she said.
