Village mayor, trustees welcomed by board Outgoing member, village clerk recognized for service

The Shorewood Village Board of Trustees took time to acknowledge the results of the contested races in the April 4 election, by recognizing incoming and outgoing members at its May 9 meeting.

Voting records from the Will County Clerk’s office show Rick Chapman receiving 1,368 votes, while his opponent in the mayoral race Barbara “Cookie” Kirkland’s 1,322 fell short.

To fill three open trustee seats, Daniel Warren tallied 1,466 votes; Daniel Anderson with 1,750; and Clarence “CC” DeBold with 1,338, while challenger Lona Jakaitis’ 1,297 missed the mark. No candidate filed to run for village clerk.

Outgoing Village Clerk Tracy Ragusa led the oath of office for returning officials Anderson, Warren, Chapman and newcomer DeBold.

“It is humbling experience, that’s for sure,” Chapman said of his re-election. “I’d like to take advantage of three or four major issues that I’ve talked about in the campaign, and, of course, one of them is something that the village board just needs to continue to focus on along with Village staff and that’s Lake Michigan Water.”

Other priorities highlighted by Chapman include keeping the Village’s radar on the construction of a recreation center and maintaining a safe community.

Anderson said he hopes to make good on his campaign promises.

“I hope to do a good job for the community,” Anderson said. “I’ll try to make the best decisions possible for the community as a whole.”

Warren gave thanks to his supporters for electing him to serve on the board for another term.

“I would like to thank my friends and all that entrusted me with this honor,” he said. “It is with a great pleasure that I’m allowed to represent and support the residents of this great community.”

DeBold said he’s truly excited to have the opportunity to represent and work for the people.

“It was a huge learning experience meeting with a variety of members and residents of the Village of Shorewood,” he said, noting this is going to be an interesting four years.

Also during that meeting, Ragusa and Trustee Ed Murphy were recognized for their service to the Village. Neither individual ran for re-election in the April 4 election.

Shorewood inks agreement with TRG Venture Two Shorewood officials are looking to bury the hatchet and move forward.

The Village of Shorewood is wading through litigation with a bonding company, Fidelity, over the completion of public improvements dating back to the most recent economic downturn, at which point the developer of the Edgewater subdivision went bankrupt and the Village sought to pick up the costs.

Village Attorney Jim Murphy said TRG Venture Two could’ve been held liable.

Shorewood officials maintain that focusing on the formation of an agreement with TRG is necessary.

Such a measure allows the 51 lots in the Edgewater subdivision not completed to be sold and developed by a potential purchaser.

The agreement, as is, approved in the amount of $565,000 stipulates that Cal Atlantic could purchase the 51 lots from TRG.

Gas main relocation at Route 52, River Road OK’d To ensure utilities are relocated ahead of the construction schedule set for Route 52 and River Road improvements, Shorewood officials approved a contract with Nicor Gas in regards to a gas main.

Mayor Rick Chapman prefaced the board’s consideration of the contract with Nicor Gas and said this measure impacts the Village’s future roadwork timeline for Route 52 and River Road “which is going to become a major construction intersection, I hope, this season.”

Typically, a project with an April letting will begin as early as midJune. It is the Village’s desire to see the construction season begin early.

The site in question running south of Route 52 and west of River Road includes an easement the

Village was made aware of. That makes the board responsible for reimbursing Nicor for a portion of the gas main relocation.

Nicor is to pay for relocation of utilities on River Road at the intersection near the Gas & Wash.

The site includes a public rightof-way, so the Village is not financially responsible for that portion.

Christopher B. Burke Engineering project manager Bryan Welch noted that ComEd and AT&T also have to relocate utilities in and

around the intersection and said hopefully, the Village will start to see those efforts ramp up.

Murphy questioned if the work performed will impact the Gash & Wash.

Welch said it shouldn’t cause an issue for the station or its operations, but the utilities relocation will lead to the bike path being torn up and later replaced.

In a 6-0 vote, the board approved a $73,867.78 contract with Nicor Gas for gas main relocation.

Plan return from travels Make returning from vacation a little easier You’re probably pretty good at planning and organizing your vacations and other trips. But have you ever given thought to how to make the end of your trip just as organized as the beginning?

Having recently returned from a threeweek vacation with no access to electronics (it was heavenly!), I’ve recently put these tips into action myself. Following them not only helped me ease back into civilization, but has also left me in good shape for my next trip.

Unpack thoroughly.

Don’t be tempted to stash your suitcase in a corner and keep returning to it to retrieve items as you realize the things you need are still in there. Spend 15 minutes pulling everything out (be sure to check all the zippered compartments and pockets) and getting each item where it belongs – laundry in the hamper (or better yet, in the washer), toiletries in the bathroom (unless you keep them in your suitcase to be ready for the next trip),

Prepare for your next trip. Rather than doing a last-minute scramble to restock toiletries or repair a broken carryon wheel, make note of what you need to replenish or repair. Add items to your shopping list so you’re ready to roll when the next travel opportunity arises.

Update your packing list. Make note of items you wish you’d taken with you, as well as items you took but wish you hadn’t. For example, I wish I’d brought my long undies on a recent backpacking trip, but could have done with one less short-sleeved shirt.

photos you still haven’t organized, but that’s no reason not to take a different approach going forward. At a minimum, tag your photos or make notes about them while your memories are still fresh. As vivid as the details may have been when you took the pictures, it’s amazing how quickly that information is forgotten.

Turn off your “on vacation” message. If you’ve recorded a phone message to tell callers you’re away, or set up an email auto-responder to let people know it will be a while before you respond to them, be sure to turn it off once you return. I cheat a bit by having my out-of-office messages indicate I’ll be gone a few days beyond my planned return date. That gives me a few days to get caught up on things and edit my photos. Oops, now my secret is out.

Minooka senior Jonathan Butler has been a top athlete for the Indians

With the postseason approaching, Jonathan Butler plans to help the Minooka baseball team in anyway he can.

While Butler has been a multisport athlete at Minooka, baseball has been his main love.

As a senior he’d literally love to help the Indians finish the season strong.

“Ever since I can remember I’ve always loved baseball,” Butler said. “Just being outside and having a brother who plays it that’s close to me in age.”

That brother is 2016 Minooka graduate Joe Butler, who is currently finishing up his freshman season at Illinois State University.

But Jonathan, who is the youngest of four children, has certainly made a name for himself.

“He’s an incredible athlete, but even a better person,” Minooka baseball coach Jeff Petrovic said of Jonathan. “They were all great kids and a great family, but Jon

is just a heck of an athlete. He’s the epitome of a great baseball player. He does so many little things.”

Butler hopes to do one of those little things again by the end of the season: Pitch. That, however, may not happen.

“I strained my oblique muscle,” Butler said of the injury that’s kept him from taking the mound in the first half of the season. “I’m hoping to come back, but I won’t come back until I’m 100 percent healthy.”

But the injury hasn’t sidelined him from batting in the mid .300’s and playing an excellent center field.

“He’s so important in the batting order and he’s so important in the outfield,” Petrovic said.

“He’s right there with the best outfielders I’ve had. He’s got every tool.”

When it came to a college choice, however, Butler decided none of the offers from 4-year schools fit him.

Saints dominate CCAC season awards Just like it dominated both the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament with titles in each, the University of St. Francis softball team also came away with the most postseason league hardware with no fewer than seven individuals being recognized for this season’s historic run.

Headlining the group was junior pitcher Morghan Dieringer (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way West), who was named the CCAC Pitcher of the Year.

She either led or tied for the league lead in five statistical categories with her 20 wins (against only four losses), four saves, 0.93 earned run average, 197 strikeouts and .189 opponents’ batting average during the regular

season.

She was second in innings pitched with 158 2/3.

Dieringer was also one of four repeat selections to the all-conference first team.

She was joined by three other teammates on the first team with another two Saints earning second-team honors.

Like Dieringer, Kayla Garcia (Chicago, Ill./ Lane Tech) also came away with one of the top four individual awards when she was recognized as the CCAC Freshman of the Year to go along with her first-team accolades.

The first baseman ranked among the best in the conference in multiple categories during the regular season, including top billings in on base percentage (.525) and walks (25) and

runner-up distinction in home runs (11) and slugging percentage (.768). She also placed fourth in total bases (96), tied for fourth in runs batted in (45) and eighth in batting average (.408).

Juniors Brooke Karraker (Kankakee, Ill./ Herscher) and Ally Balandis (Burbank, Ill./ Reavis) completed the list of USF representatives on the allconference first team.

Karraker, a second baseman/ outfielder, led the league in doubles (18) and finished second or tied for second in runs scored (52), runs batted in (46), triples (four) and total bases (104) during the regular season.

She was also sixth in hits (57) and slugging percentage (.658).

She hit .361 on the year, appearing in all 42 regular-season

games.

Balandis, a catcher/third baseman, also ranked among the league’s elite with her 46 runs batted in (tied for second with Karraker), 12 doubles (T7th), 86 total bases (eighth) and 37 runs scored (T-8th).

She also saw action in all 42 of the Saints’ regular-season games this spring and hit .358 for the year.

Representing the brown and gold on the second team were sophomore Taylor Barsz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and junior Anna Wetherell (Rock Island, Ill./ Alleman Catholic).

Barsz went unbeaten on the mound during the regular season (11-0) and her 1.14 earned run average was second in the league to only Dieringer.

Her 11 wins tied for the seventh-most in the conference, while her .242 opponents’ batting average ranked sixth.

Five of her wins were of the shutout variety.

Wetherell, an outfielder, used her speed to score the thirdmost runs in the conference during the regular season with 46.

Her getting into scoring position was aided by the secondmost stolen bases in the league, going a perfect 28-for-28.

Appearing in all 42 regularseason games, she hit .320 on the season as the Saints’ leadoff batter.

They certainly are as the HCC baseball page touts these accomplishments: There’s 135 players who have moved through the HCC baseball program and went on to complete a 4-year degree.

Of those 121 student-athletes moved on to play baseball at 4-year programs, with 84 joining NCAA Division-1 programs.

Then 15 went on to play professional baseball.

“I had a couple of D1 looks, but they weren’t able to give scholarships,” Butler said. “So I decided to go to a junior college, get better and hopefully get a scholarship.”

It doesn’t hurt that Heartland is located in Bloomington, just down the street from Illinois State. So Butler, who plans to eventually major in chemical or mechanical engineering, will be able to see his brother a bit more easily.

“It’s more of a coincidence,” Butler said of the proximity between the two schools. “I just really liked Heartland.”

He’s also really liked playing sports for the Indians. Butler played as a defensive back on the football for three seasons before giving it up this past fall to concentrate on baseball.

Also finishing among the top eight performers in their respective events were seniors Ryan Bauers (Carol Stream, Ill./ Bartlett) and Ian Welsh (Villa Park, Ill./ Willowbrook).

Bauers used a throw of 48 feet, eight inches to place seventh in the shot put.

Welsh was eighth in the hammer throw with his heave of 161 feet.

No team results were kept at the meet.

I think the right one,” said Butler, who played on the Midwest Scout Baseball team for the Cincinnati Reds last fall. “I wanted to play fall baseball and get more looks.”

But he didn’t give up basketball. In fact the 6-foot-2 1/2 inch Butler was a 4-year starter on the Indians’ hoops team and scored 37 points on Feb. 10 of this season in 61-48 home victory over Romeoville.

During his time as a varsity basketball player, he played everything from point guard to post. But it was a moment his junior season that remains his top one in high school to this point.

“I really enjoyed junior year when we won [the Class 4A] regional title,” Butler said of the Indians 49-31 home victory on March 4, 2016 over a Bolingbrook team that took third in the state both the year before and after that. “We won it on our home court, before all our fans, That was special.”

Did Butler consider playing basketball in college, instead of baseball?

“Maybe a little, but not really,” he said. “Baseball is my true passion and I think I can excel at the next level there.”

And in the meantime help the Indians to a good finish here.

“We have a good team [at Minooka] this year, but we know there’s a lot of good teams,” Butler said. “We have to be ready come regional time and all finish strong

Crowdfunding real estate is a horrible ‘shortcut’ I wouldn’t give someone money to buy real estate in a crowdfunding scenario DEAR DAVE, I’d like to get involved in real estate investing, but I don’t have a lot of cash at present. What do you think of the idea of crowdfunding as a way to invest in real estate?

ADAM DEAR ADAM, I’ve got a bunch of real estate, and I love it. But I wouldn’t go the crowdfunding route as a way to get started in real estate investing.

I wouldn’t give someone money to buy real estate in a crowdfunding scenario, either.

The late Beverly Sills had a great saying: “There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going.” Investing in real estate is wonderful when you do it right. Get out of debt first, pay cash, and find great bargains.

When you get in a hurry, and do

dumb stuff like go into debt or get mixed up with partnerships in the process, real estate’s a horrible investment.

I admire your ambition, Adam.

But I would advise you to follow my lead on this one. You’ll be glad you did!

ANONYMOUS DEAR ANONYMOUS, It’s pretty easy to get term life insurance – the only kind of life insurance I recommend – up until

around age 70. Depending on your overall health situation, there are a few affordable policies available past that point. But once you get into your 70s and beyond it can be difficult to find reasonably priced coverage.

I recommend that most people have 10 to 12 times their annual income wrapped up in a good, level term life insurance policy. But honestly, you shouldn’t need life insurance at 70 or older. If you’ve been wise with your money, and saved and invested, you should be selfinsured by that point. This means having plenty of cash in the bank to cover burial expenses and enough for a spouse to live on after you’re gone.

Forest Preserve District launches new website Website also has more interactive features, such as scouting locations The address is the same – ReconnectWithNature.org – but the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s new website has a completely different look and feel and it’s faster, more interactive and photo rich than ever before.

The new website, that debuted May 10, also is better organized and packed with the latest programs, events and District news.

Because more and more people are getting their information from electronic devices, the new website can be accessed as easily from a phone or tablet as it is from a desktop computer. Once you punch in the address, the pages will load in less than half the time.

If you’re looking for an event, program or location, the website is better organized to help you find what you are seeking. And if that fails, there’s a more powerful search function.

The website also has more interactive features which will let you scout out your destination ahead of time by viewing the interactive map, which will be available from any page on the site.

Each preserve will soon feature a

360-degree photo to give visitors an idea of what they will encounter. Since the 360-degree photos have been incorporated into the website, they’ve been viewed more than 330,000 times, with a shot of Lake Renwick Preserve having been seen 136,000 times.

If you want to know the latest news and program information, the website’s headlines section will keep you up to date on news and major events, while “The Big Picture” takes a multimedia approach to showcase the preserves and their history. If you’re looking for fun, check out the website’s new video library or a new blog titled “The Buzz” that features general interest — and often wacky — nature news.

The website also has a revamped calendar that allows visitors to scroll through the entire list of programs and events, or filter the results based on date and/ or location. A kids’ page is chockfull of activity ideas, as well as fun and interesting videos.

In addition, online program registration and the ability to check availability of preserve picnic shelters are coming soon.

Work on the new website began in the summer of 2016 and the developer is Des Plaines-based American Eagle.
