They will begin their positions in Troy schools this summer.

The Timbers of Shorewood’s knit and crochet club donated 50 hats and 50 blankets to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center April 29. The hats will be used in labor and delivery, and the blankets will go to various hospital departments such as oncology, physical rehab, etc. The club has grown recently from three members to 17.

Zoning issue raises veteran housing concerns Joliet city council voted 6-2 to grant the variation to CL2 Corporation

A zoning ordinance issue drew a crowd of veterans’ rights supporters to the Joliet City Council’s May 3 meeting.

CL2 Corporation, which owns a residential property at 7-9 Cagwin St., sought a variation of use so that it could continue to operate an existing two-unit residence in the home. The city classifies twounit residences a an R-3 use, but the home is located within a singlefamily R-2 zoning district.

The city council voted 6-2 to grant the variation to CL2, which offers subsidized housing to the property’s two tenants – one of whom is a veteran and the other a person with a disability.

A group of individuals who supported the variation of use request attended the meeting and used the issue to comment on the rights of veterans and others in need of subsidized housing.

Jacquelyn Allen, of Joliet, was one of the many attendees who spoke.

Because her sister is a veteran, Allen said she recognized the significance of zoning ordinance issues like this one. “[CL2] is allowing them to get a subsidized home, when a lot of [veterans] end up being homeless,” she said. “Giving them subsidized housing, is allowing them to stay.”

Councilwoman Jan Quillman said she was upset to see this one zoning ordinance violation being mislabeled as a widespread problem that affects veterans throughout the city.

“I don’t know how this got to be a veterans issue,” she said. “We don’t hate veterans.”

Quillman, who serves as a backup flight nurse for Honor Flight Chicago, said issues pertaining to veterans hit close to home for her.

“My husband’s a Vietnam vet and to have all these veterans come up here tonight and say things [about] what we’re doing to veterans was just deplorable to me,” she said. “I don’t know why you would have to use veterans for this one.”

Corporation, responded to the councilwoman’s comments by saying that those commenting were being misunderstood.

“The type of clients we have are veterans, and that’s why they were concerned,” she said. “They were not saying that, ‘nobody is trying to help veterans.’ But, they feel a house that one of the vets cannot live is a problem.”

The property in question includes a two-bedroom unit on the first floor and a one-bedroom unit on the second floor. City ordinances state that a two-unit housing development must have three offstreet parking spaces.

In 2006, a petition was denied to rezone the property as a two-unit home, leaving the development designated as a single-family unit.

CL2 Corporation purchased the in property in 2015 as a two-unit development. The owners said they did not receive clarification from the city regarding the house’s zoning classification at that time.

Officials became aware of the zoning violation that same, when the city’s Neighborhood Services Division examined the property.

Quillman noted a few irregular components surrounding issues related to the zoning of the property on Cagwin Street. She said she is not sure how the house became available on the market as a singlefamily home without the owner’s coming before the city to find out why it’s zoned as it is.

Beavers said this information was never made clear when looking to purchase the property.

“That’s the predicament,” she said. “We’re not really sure, to be honest with you. This has been kind of a fiasco.”

When the home was purchased in 2006, the owners went through the planning and zoning process.

At that time, neighborhood services

began learning of new information regarding past violations pertaining to the property that weren’t previously noted in their records.

Once the tenants were settled into the building in July 2015, they said a sticker was put on the home.

Beavers said it wasn’t until later when the owners reached out to a member of city staff that they learned the issues had arisen in the planning department, where information regarding violations had not been recorded, creating a delay on the city’s part.

Beaver added that the owners needed to wait for much of the planning violations to be resolved before making improvements to the building.

To date, 90 percent of the work has been completed.

Quillman noted what happens when previous owners fail to comply with zoning ordinances and how it affects the CL2 Corporation.

“Some people they’re downzoned to single-family, but they don’t necessarily comply,” she said “They keep their illegal two-units and unfortunately, pass it on to the next person. However, if it’s for sale you have to get the proper zoning at the time of sale.”

In response to the recordkeeping issue, Quillman added that it’s upsetting the way the city’s handling of zoning ordinance violation regarding Cagwin Street has panned out.

“I feel like this has kind of fallen through the cracks, unfortunately,” she said. “I know that St. Pats has really diligently tried to bring back the neighborhood with downzoning and not picking on just you particularly. It’s just something that went into place because there were so many multifamily homes there.”

A two-thirds vote became necessary in order to pass the measure, after the Zoning Board of Appeals failed to approve what would apply an additional condition to the owner’s lease, stating that only one vehicle can be parked on site.

Councilmen Pat Mudron and Michael Turk voted against the variance.

Many tourists will embark on traveling the historic Route 66 this year, building a collection of stories

and memories worth sharing when they return home. That was the case for a number of travelers stopping in the city of Joliet.

Despite rain early on, hundreds took part in the 10th annual Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor Festival at the Joliet Area Historical Museum May 7-8.

Greg Peerbolte, executive director at the Joliet Area Historical Museum, said hosting the festivities brings great meaning to those visiting downtown Joliet.

“It’s the ceremonial first stretch of Route 66 outside of Chicago and particularly, Joliet is where it goes from urban to country within a matter of minutes,” he said.

As part of the celebration, the museum opened up their Route 66 exhibit and hosted a presentation by a guest speaker.

A number of local businesses in town were also on board for heightening the festiveness of the 10th annual celebration including Joliet Rt. 66 Diner, Juliet’s Tavern and The Treehouse Café, among others.

Marty Varney, of Hammond, Indiana, was one of many making a stop at the Joliet Area Historical Museum. He said they come out to the festival every year.

“My wife and I have been doing the red corridor event for several years now,” he said. “We always like to start in Joliet.”

Varney said it brings great meaning being able to travel together along Route 66.

“We love to learn about the

history of it,” he said. “As a kid, I remember going back and forth to Morris and Dwight. (I’m) recreating some of my youth.”

His wife Robin Varney, of Hammond, was also in attendance for the celebration. She said she was enjoying her time spent at the festival.

Peerbolte said those visiting the museum tend to enjoy their time spent traveling along Route 66.

More than 400 people attended the festival held in Joliet last year.

Peerbolte said they were expecting a nice turnout for the 10th annual event.

“Each year we’ve been open to the public to encourage that kick off of Route 66 season,” he said. “We find that it’s growing every year.”

Val Rand, of Joliet, was there for the festivities held in downtown Joliet. He said he enjoys driving down Route 66.

“It’s actually more beautiful and much more relaxing and you can really see much more of the farmland,” he said.

He noted how timing a trip can be challenging, but it’s worth it.

He added that if he were to make a trip along the Route 66 red corridor again, he would set aside more time for exploration.

LTHS English teacher named new gifted coordinator Tammy Gallagher will replace Mickey Conway in the 2016-17 school year A Lockport Township High School English teacher will be the district’s new honors-gifted-advanced placement coordinator, beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

Tammy Gallagher will replace Mickey Conway, who is retiring at the conclusion of the current school year. Since 2002, Gallagher has taught AP English language and composition and honors English 11 at LTHS. She also has served on numerous district and building level committees.

“We are confident Tammy will continue to enhance the gifted program and continue the successes that Mickey has provided during her tenure,” said Brett Gould, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

Joliet West choir wins first place gold at Nashville Music Festival The Joliet West High School choir finished with a first place gold and a 95 out of 100 rating during a recent Nashville Music Festival competition.

The competition was part of the JTHS choir’s participation in the Music City Performance Program at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville last week. The Music City Performance Program gives visiting performing groups an exciting Opry experience at one the nation’s best-known music establishments.

The weekend also included performances at the Country Music Hall of Fame, Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Texas Troubadour Theater and RCA Studio B, where Elvis recorded. Choir students also took a masterclass at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

School District 204 with a grant for financial planning materials.

Eva Thurman-Keup received the $500 grant, which the coalition awards in order to help facilities throughout Illinois improve their financial capabilities. The grant money will be used to provide students with books that tackle the hardships of saving money.

“We will receive a collection of teen books and plan to organize a finance fair involving Abri Credit Union and interested faculty for early next year,” Thurman-Keup said.

Books provided by the grant for the “teen” age level include “The Everything Kids’ Money Book,” “Money Sense for Kids,” “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Money for Teens” and “Rich Dad, Poor Dad for Teens: The Secrets About Money That You Don’t Learn in School.”

Bradley Schlott, 48 A Joliet man was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being found guilty of attempted first degree murder in the 2009 stabbing of his former girlfriend.

Circuit Judge Amy BertaniTomczak sentenced Bradley Schlott, 48, on May 4. A jury found Schlott guilty in March.

According to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, Schlott brutally attacked his former girlfriend in the Joliet house they shared the morning of March 12, 2009.

During the attack, the victim convinced Schlott to call 911 by

telling him she would say her injuries were the result of an accident. A physician testified at trial that she would have died had she not been treated.

“This was a savage attack by a weak and jealous man who lashed out when he felt he could no longer control his girlfriend,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said.

“This courageous woman fought back and not only saved her own life, but she helped police and prosecutors put this monster behind bars.”

I recently read the book “Great With Money” by Melissa Burke and Ellen Rogin. With the goal of the book being to help readers create a prosperous mindset and a confident approach to money, you might expect it to focus on how to earn more and spend less. Well, it may surprise you to know that “clear your clutter” is the first step to prosperity described by the authors. Yup, clearing the clutter in your life is the first step toward prosperity.

Even without the benefit of seeing disorganized homes and offices on the level that I do, these authors wisely recognize that being surrounded by clutter can block you from achieving more in your life – your piles of paper and other stuff represent unfinished tasks and postponed decisions that can weigh you down. The clutter not only physically blocks you from accomplishing things, but the mental clutter it creates can

prevent you from moving forward in your life. You’re too busy focusing on what you haven’t accomplished to be able to think about creating new accomplishments.

Sure, great achievers like Albert Einstein were famously buried in clutter.

However,I’mguessingthatbecauseyou’re reading a column about organization, you sense that being better organized would help you accomplish more. As Swiss philosopher Henri Frédéric Amiel stated, “Order is light, peace, inner freedom, self-determination: it is power.

To conceive order, to return to order, to realize order in oneself, around oneself, by means of oneself, is well-being.”

Not only does clearing clutter and creating order create a physical and mental path towards prosperity, it can actually directly generate prosperity.

History Regular season success not enough for Minooka soccer

One of the best regular seasons in Minooka history is coming to the end of the road.

The Indians (11-3) have not only won a lot of games, they won their division of the Pepsi Showdown along the way.

“They are a good group and are fun to be around,” Minooka coach Chris Brolly said. “They don’t care who they are playing or where they are playing. We traveled all over the place. We know opponent’s couple key players and they would mark them up.

They love soccer and do it well.”

The energy, effort and cohesiveness has led the Indians throughout the season.

“They are a close group. They are one giant team and do a lot together,” Brolly said. “That helps. I’ve been coaching 10 years and having a team that likes each other goes a long way on the field. I’m proud of them.”

“You play every game, fighting for the best record that you can and hope that it translates to success in the playoffs,” Brolly said. “We want to finish the season strong and go into the playoffs hot. You never know in the playoffs. We were upset last year in the first round and I think they want revenge on whoever is standing there.”

That has paid off with the No. 2 seed in a Normal Community Subsectional, which makes them the favorite in the Joliet West Regional. “I think this is the highest seed we have gotten,” Brolly said. “I don’t think the girls care. They are excited for the playoffs and excited for the competition.” Minooka opens play at Joliet West at 4:30 p.m.

Lockport dominates sectional; Joliet West duo headed to state Lockport hosted its own IHSA badminton sectional last week and took advantage of the home court.

The Porters dominated the sectional, scoring 18 points to win the title.

In the singles bracket, Lockport advanced both Hannah Burke and Jenna Franzen to the state meet.

Burke won the sectional defeating Mia Ko of Sandburg 21-19, 18-21, 22-20, Taryn Bank of Plainfield North 21-19, 2111, then beating her teammate Franzen 30-29, 21-13.

Before falling to Burke, Franzen

defeated Brooke Conzachi of Plainfield North 21-12, 21-9 and Emily Tunney of Sandburg 21-16, 21-17.

The Porters also placed in the top two spots in doubles as Jessica Miller and Haley Egelhof placed first by defeating teammates Alexis Duda and McKenzie Ebel 21-6, 21-12.

To reach the finals, Miller and Egelhof defeated Joliet West 21-4, 21-6 and Plainfield North 21-12, 21-0, while Duda and Ebel beat Plainfield Central 22-21, 21-7 and Sandburg 21-12, 21-17.

TRACK AND FIELD Minooka placed second at the Southwest Prairie Conference girls track and field meet with 92 points, while Oswego East won the title with 145.

Mackenzie Callahan placed first in the 800 meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 15.79 seconds.

Emily Shelton was first in the 1600 run in 5:06.13 and finished second in the 3200 run (11:14.60) behind teammate Ashley Tutt, who ran the race in 11:14.46.

Moody earns CCAC Track MVP The University of St. Francis women’s track & field team finished runner-up at the 2016 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Friday and Saturday at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

The Saints concluded the twoday meet with 193.5 points to finish behind conference champion Olivet Nazarene University’s 230.5.

St. Ambrose University finished third at the nine-team event with 134 points. Nine Saints garnered All-CCAC status by placing among

the top three in their respective individual or relay events. Four of the nine individuals as well as two relay teams claimed league championships.

Sophomore Jenna Moody (Joliet, Ill./ Plainfield Central) was recognized for the second straight season as the CCAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Year. She won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes with respective times of 12.26 seconds, 24.76 seconds and 54.99 seconds, the latter two of which were good for conference records.

Local sophomore wins 2nd place in art contest Alexis Smith wins $2,000 scholarship A sophomore at Joliet Central High School won second place in the Will County State’s Attorney’s Dangers of Heroin Art Scholarship Contest.

WillCountyState’sAttorneyJames Glasgow last week announced the winners of the contest, which sought to illustrate the dangerous and often deadly consequences of heroin use. More than 60 Will County high school students participated in the contest, which awarded college scholarships for the top three submissions.

Jessica Johnson, a senior at Plainfield Central High School, took first place and a $3,000 scholarship for her work, titled “Outer Demons.” Alexis Smith, a sophomore at Joliet Central, won second place and a $2,000

scholarship for her submission, “Suffering.” Lincoln-Way Central High School student Rebecca Kahney won third place and $1,000 for her submission, “Heroin Kills.”

“The goal of this contest was to enlist high school students to sound a warning for their peers about the heroin scourge that has destroyed so many lives in Will County,” Glasgow said. “I asked students to first educate themselves about the horrendous dangers of using heroin, and then to use their knowledge to create a powerful piece of original artwork to drive home an anti-heroin message.”

Because of the number of quality submissions, Glasgow said he decided to create a “Runners Up” category and award three additional $500 scholarships for

three entries he felt should be honored.

Runner up winners were LincolnWay Central senior Skylar Bojan, Lincoln-Way North freshman JoHannah Ann Eckert and Joliet Central senior Kolton Skeldon.

“Across the board, the artwork I received exceeded every expectation in terms of quality and thoughtfulness,” Glasgow added.

The winning works will be reproduced and featured prominently in an updated version of the state’s attorney’s “Gang Awareness and Prevention Book,” scheduled for release later this

year. Fatal heroin overdoses in the county are on pace to reach as many as 90 in 2016, shattering the previous record high of 53 in 2015 and 2012.

Area residents reminded to prepare for tornado season About 1,200 tornadoes reported in U.S. each year Bugle Staff With temperatures slowly starting to climb up to normal averages for this time of year, the threat of tornados and severe thunderstorms are also on the rise.

The city of Joliet last week reminded residents of some important preparedness and safety tips to keep in mind if confronted with one of nature’s most violent storms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Severe Storm Laboratory says about 1,200 tornadoes are reported in the U.S. each year, most commonly in the central plains and southeastern portions of the country. In the upper Midwest and northern plains, tornado season typically falls between June and July. However, weather experts warn that these deadly storms can occur any time of year.

these storms, the city recommends building an emergency kit and making a family communications plan. Be aware of changing weather conditions and listen to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or television newscasts for the latest information. Tornadoes are formed from powerful thunderstorms, which typically produced a number of warning signs. During these storms, residents are urged to look for dark or greenish skies; large hail; a large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating); and a loud roar similar to a freight train.

Tornadoes are narrow columns of air that rotate violently and extend from the base of a thunderstorm

to the ground. They are often hard to see unless a funnel cloud, or condensation funnel, made up of dust, debris and water droplets forms. Below are a number of precautions to take in the event of a tornado watch or warning.

Limit travel during a tornado watch One of the most dangerous places you can be during a tornado is in your car; Keep alert and watch for changing weather conditions; Be ready to seek shelter at a moment’s notice; Place small objects such as garbage cans, bicycles and patio furniture inside; and Keep children under close supervision. If a tornado “warning” is issued, it means that a tornado has either been indicated by radar or observed by spotters. A warning means there is a serious threat to life and property and it is time to go to a safe shelter immediately.

Tornado watch If a tornado “watch” is issued for your area, it means that weather conditions are favorable for a tornado.

Gather items like water, weather radio with extra batteries, snacks, blankets, and flashlights; Keep a radio or local area TV station on so you will have access to the most up-to-date storm information, also

Inside when a warning is issued Make sure you have a portable radio, preferably NOAA Weather Radio, for weather alerts and updates; Seek shelter in the lowest level of your home, such as a basement or storm cellar. If you don’t have a basement, go to an inner hallway, a smaller inner room or a closet; Keep away from all windows and glass doorways;

If you’re in a building such as a church, hospital, school or office building, go to the innermost part of the building on the lowest floor; Do not use elevators because the power may fail, leaving you trapped; Cushion yourself with a mattress, but don’t cover yourself with one; Cover your head and eyes with a blanket or jacket to protect against flying debris and broken glass; Don’t waste time moving mattresses around; Keep pets on a leash or in a crate or carrier; Stay inside until you are certain the storm has passed, as multiple tornadoes can emerge from the same storm; Do not leave a building to attempt to “escape” a tornado.

Outside when a warning is issued Try to get inside a building as quickly as possible and find a small, protected space away from windows; Avoid buildings with longspan roof areas such as a school gymnasium, arena or shopping mall, as these structures are usually supported only by outside walls.

When hit by a tornado, buildings like these can collapse because they cannot withstand the pressure of the storm.
