Casino Night raises money for local kids Kiwanis Club of Shorewood and Skooter’s Roadhouse host annual fundraiser to benefit local children

On the evening of April 29, the Kiwanis Club of Shorewood and Skooter’s Roadhouse provided the Village of Shorewood with a casino with a special mission: to raise money to benefit local children and their families in the community.

“This is our sixth year doing it,” said Matt Bibo, president of Kiwanis Club of Shorewood.

“We raise money for children’s organizations, anything that can

benefit a child.”

Highlights during this year’s gala included a raffle, silent auction, dinner and entertainment.

Last year, the Kiwanis Club of Shorewood raised more than $11,000.

“It’s something that’s needed in the community, I think,” Bibo said.

Organizations and programs benefiting from the annual gala in the past included The Miracle League of Joliet, Shorewood Shop With a Cop, Shorewood Glen Blanket Program and Boys & Girls Club of Joliet.

“It could change every year,” he said. “We kind of find out what they’re looking for, and then we accordingly give.”

Bibo said it’s important for the community to come together in support of children.

“I don’t think there’s enough to do for the kids,” he said. “That’s why we do this. We’re strictly 100 percent kids.”

Typically, close to 100 people drop in for the Casino Night Gala.

“They play, they can learn,” Bibo said of the casino games.

“The dealers can teach them how to play. It’s something fun.”

Dave Domkey, of Shorewood, said he’s glad to show his support for the Kiwanis Club of Shorewood by dropping in.

“I had a loving family, and I think any child that lacks that direction should have an opportunity to find support and their own means,” he said. “I think it’s a fantastic cause, and I’m happy to be here.”

This year was Domkey’s first time attending the gala. Browsing through the raffle prizes on display, he said found a number of items of interest, and in particular, one stood out to him.

“Being that I am a Sox fan, I like the Sox tickets,” Domkey said.

Jim Daniels, of Shorewood, was browsing through the raffle prizes with his wife, Barbie.

“It’s a good mix of stuff,” he said.

Barbie agreed.

“We’ve been here before, and it’s always been a great time,” she said.

Jim said supporting the Kiwanis Club of Shorewood means a lot to him.

“I wasn’t one that grew up with a lot,” he said. “It’s nice to have a little support. Coming out to do this for the kids is a great idea.”

Barbie, too, shared that sentiment.

“We want to support the kids,” she said.

Barbie said the work of the Kiwanis Club of Shorewood is much needed.

“Not everyone is fortunate, and they could use some help and support,” she said. “It’s just nice to be able to give back.”

Troy ‘Beauty and the Beast’ stars hold meet-and-greet with special needs students Something very special happened the week after Troy Middle School’s student production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

Before their public performances, the cast performed the musical for the school’s students.

While the student population as a whole enjoyed the production, TMS Principal Renee Marski no-

ticed how much the special needs students in the school’s instructional classes relished watching it.

To enhance their appreciation of theatre and the production, Marski arranged a meet-andgreet between the special needs students and the principle actors in the musical, Julianna Byrne,

who played Belle, and Jayden Ciamprone, who was Beast.

Our instructional students were able to ask the actors questions, and they did a wonderful job responding to them,” said Troy Director of Special Education Deb Marco. “It was simply wonderful.”

Kids’ mental health is focus of May ‘We are realizing the ramifications of unchecked bullying, and we are doing something’

With the Month of May being Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month, the question might be “How are we, as a society, doing when it comes to being aware and caring about the mental health of our kids?”

Licensed Psychologist and Registered Nurse Dr. Rita Gray, Director of Clinical Training for the Will County Health Department’s Behavioral Health division, says adults taking action when children are mistreating each other can be one of the most important factors in preventing mental health problems, as well as other issues like drug and alcohol addiction, down the road.

Dr. Gray says it is especially important when it comes to bullying and cyberbullying issues. “I really

think that if more adults were involved and taking action we would be better off. There are still cases of looking away. It could be cowardice, minimizing the situation, or perhaps giving it the ‘benefit of doubt’ that the situation will work itself out.”

Dr. Rita Gray, Director of Clinical Training for Will County Health Department Behavioral Health Dr. Gray added that sometimes she will have a child in therapy for behavioral or drug issues, and it may not be until the third session or later that they admit severe bullying is in their background. Gray says when it comes to adults being involved and taking action; whether or not they do, even with their own kids, might be due to their own backgrounds.

Richard is survived by his children, John (Mary) LeGrand and Teresa (Peter) Adams; grandchildren, Joseph (Susan) LeGrand, Robert LeGrand and Thomas (girlfriend Emily Smith) LeGrand, Steven Lanier, Jennifer Lanier, Michelle Lanier and Christopher Raymond; neighbors and good friends, Gary and Kathie Kahovec.

Richard was expecting his first great-grandchild from Tommy and Emily in September.

Preceded in death by his wife, Kay LeGrand (nee Riggs) (1991); parents, John and Coletta (nee Strack) LeGrand; brothers, Adrian, Bill, Cleo and Jim LeGrand; and sister, Alberta Marquardt.

Richard was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and was the youngest of six children. He graduated with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Richard began his career at U.S. Gypsum in Kansas City, Missouri and continued his career at National Gypsum in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was then transferred to Waukegan, Illinois where he was subsequently hired as plant manager for Ivex Paper

Mill in Joliet. Richard was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Plainfield. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Richard was an avid fisherman and enjoyed many trips to Canada with his friends. One of his biggest joys was being able to help people, from volunteering at St. Joseph Medical center to lending a helping hand fixing household items and visiting his elderly friends at home or in the nursing home. He loved spending time with all of his grandchildren and completely fulfilled one of his wife’s most important requests to “take care of her grandbabies.”

In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

A celebration of Richard’s life was May 5 with prayers in the funeral home chapel then a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Plainfield. Interment at St. Mary Cemetery in Plainfield.

yourself out of it,” Gray said. She explained that a victim might feel shame or guilt as an adult, and therefore be in denial that it is also happening to their own child. Or they might be hesitant to talk to another adult about it for fear of a reaction along the lines of, “Well, I’m not surprised, I can see why you might have been bullied.”

But both Gray and Michelle Zambrano, a childhood and adolescence program manager for the health department, say that adults

need to face their regrets about the past, or fear about getting involved now, and tell someone what is going on. It is for the good of the mental health of children, they say, as well as society as a whole. And they also remind everyone that if you know someone is being mistreated, or being terribly bullied on social media, speak to a teacher or adult at the school they attend.

“When you hear about quotes like, ‘You’re such a loser, why don’t you kill yourself, and then something happens, you can’t just say ‘I thought they were just kidding,’ said Gray.

“We cannot have that kind of denial.” Michelle Zambrano, Childhood and Adolescence Programming Manager for Will County Health Department Zambrano says it may take the next generation or two for the level of awareness about the effect of bullying and cyberbullying on children’s mental health to get where it should be. But she does have praise for what is happening today.

“This is definitely an era of expanded knowledge. We are realizing the ramifications of unchecked bullying, and we are doing something.

There’s a lot less tolerance for it, a lot more training in schools for faculty and students, and more of a safety net.”

Zambrano says even if some kids scoff at some of the things they hear in student anti-bullying programs, even if a handful of kids change their thinking and no longer “just stand by” the effort is worthwhile. And others who hear the program just might figure it out later in life. “Maturity brings sensitivity,” Zambrano said. “Especially when it comes to having their own children.”

Government Proposes Cutting Support for Meals on Wheels Federal funding for meals on wheels is on the chopping block. The Trump administration budget blueprint released in March calls for the elimination of two federal block grants: That’s money the federal government gives the states for social welfare programs, and those programs include homedelivered meals and meals served in senior centers.

Most of the nation’s 5,000 meal programs also rely on money from the Older Americans Act passed in 1965 to fund about 35 percent of the cost of the meals they serve. Those funds are also in jeopardy. The budget blueprint calls for an 18 percent cut to the budget of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which administers the Act, and programs are bracing for more cuts.

Paul Kraintz who heads the senior nutrition program at Meals on Wheels in Martinez, California, says while his program would lose about $67,000 it now gets from one of the block grants, he’s really worried about the potential budget cut at HHS. “If they take 18 percent of that, it’s going to be big.”

Why the attack on meals delivered to the elderly, many of whom are homebound, ill, and unable to cook or shop?

At his March news conference, budget director Mick Mulvaney told reporters, “Meals on Wheels sounds great,” but to take that federal money and give it to the states, and say, ‘Look we want to give you money for programs that don’t work’ – I can’t defend that anymore.” He claimed the program was “just not showing any results.”

Mulvaney didn’t say what he meant by results. He didn’t have to. His comments were aimed at creating doubt in the minds of legislators who might look favorably on cutting the Health and Human Services funds for use elsewhere in the federal budget. The potential impact on hungry elders was

not a high priority. It didn’t matter that thousands of seniors on waiting lists for food in communities across the country are, in effect, stuck in a bread line.

Several academic studies examining meals on wheels programs have challenged comments like Mulvaney’s regarding the program’s effectiveness. A recent randomized controlled study funded by the AARP Foundation showed significant differences among seniors on waiting lists, those receiving home-delivered meals, and those getting deliveries of frozen foods. Seniors with home-delivered meals reported the greatest improvement in health and quality of life.

In 2013 Brown University researchers found that meals delivered to seniors allowed them to stay in their homes rather than going to a nursing home, and that resulted in a net savings to Medicaid, which pays for about half of all nursing home stays.

Nursing home funding from Medicaid may be in trouble, too, if Congress cuts more than $800 billion out of Medicaid over the next 10 years, which has been proposed. States could have fewer dollars to channel into nursing home care. The picture is bleak for senior services. Thirty-eight states also use Medicaid dollars for home-delivered meals.

None of this makes much sense.

The number of people needing food is growing rapidly and has been for de-

cades. Erika Kelly, a government affairs officer for Meals on Wheels America, an umbrella organization for local programs, told me its members are already serving 23 million fewer meals than in 2005, a decline that has resulted in an increase in hunger.

Federal funding has not kept pace with the need. Money from state and local governments and private philanthropy hasn’t been able to provide the rest of the money to feed everyone who needs a meal. “The gap has grown so much there’s no way private philanthropy will fill it,” says Ellie Hollander who heads Meals on Wheels America.

Philanthropy works only in places where there are lots of wealthy individuals and corporations to tap. In Dallas, donors who can write checks for $1 million or $2 million have helped whittle the waiting list from about 3,000 a year ago to 2,000 today.

What do those still on the lists do?

“People have come to us who are literally starving, or they ask family to bring stuff from the food bank. It’s whatever they can do to get food into their homes,” says Katherine Krause, president of VNA Texas, the agency that delivers the meals.

Programs like those in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, aren’t as lucky. There aren’t many rich donors or big companies. “It’s worse now than it ever has been for funding,” says Director Betty Bradshaw.

In 1963 President John F. Kennedy, quoting the historian Arnold Toynbee noted in a special message to Congress, “a society’s quality and durability can best be measured ‘by the respect and care given its elderly citizens.’”

That respect and care may be threatened if government support to feed the elderly is cut.

Last year Minooka fell 2-0 to Plainfield North in what was North’s 55th straight Southwest Prairie Conference win.

However, the competitive nature of the game gave the Indians confidence they could compete with the eight-time SPC champs.

This year they didn’t just compete with the Tigers, they beat them.

Minooka ended North’s streak of 60-straight SPC wins with a 1-0 win last week at home.

“It was really nice,” Hailey Arlis said. “Playing four years, we have always been gunning for Plainfield North. They’ve won conference eight years in a row. We always want to beat them. The past couple years the game has gone down to the wire. We knew we could do it and it feels great. This boosts out confidence for the rest of the conference games and into the playoffs.

“It’s huge,” Minooka coach Chris Brolley said. “They have been on top for a while. We’ve had some close games the past couple years.

Maddie Morin scored the lone goal for Minooka.

“It feels great,” Morin said. “I’m so pumped right now. This is a big deal. We had the confidence and we knew what they were about. We came out, went around them and got that goal.”

While Morin scored the goal, the lone senior on the field moved from forward to defense the top 20 minutes of the game and stopped multiple attacks from the Tigers.

“Being a captain and one of only two seniors and with the other one hurt, I have to do whatever the team needs,” Arlis said. “With all the sports I play, I have learned to watch eyes and hips and judge SEE STREAK PAGE 9

After sweeping away Marian Catholic (16-8, 10-4) and replacing the Spartans as residents atop the East Suburban Catholic Conference penthouse, JCA (16-10-1, 11-1) continued its torrid play at Gillespie Field on Saturday. The Hilltoppers swept away last-place Marian Central Catholic 7-1 and 8-0.

In game one, Brandon Wills, allowed a run and four hits while striking out seven, in his six innings on the mound, to pick up the win. Aidan Tyrell led the Hilltopper attack with three RBI while Michael O’Brien added two hits and two RBI. In game two, Hilltopper sophomore Zak Gould (1-0) fired a four-hit shutouts at the Hurricanes, with five strikeouts. Michael O’Brien and Aidan Tyrell each had two hits and two RBI, to lead the Hilltopper onslaught.

JCA 4, MARIAN CATHOLIC 1 After knocking off Marian Catholic (15-7, 9-3) on Thursday 1-0, the Hilltoppers swept away the Spartans 4-1 behind catcher Simon Grashoff and first baseman Jack Surin. Grashoff, drove home two big Hilltopper runs while Surin drove home another. Michael O’Brien chipped in with two hits and Thursday’s hero, sophomore Greg Ziegler, fired two scoreless innings of relief on the mound.

A game earlier at frigid and windy Gillespie Field in Joliet, the Hilltoppers (13-10-1, 8-1) behind a combined three-hit shutout by Aidan Tyrell (2-1) and Brendon Wills, blanked Marian Catholic 1-0. In a huge East Suburban Catholic Conference showdown, Joliet Catholic took over the top spot in the ESCC by percentage points.

Tyrell fired five shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out eight. Tyrell’s clutch two-out RBI single drove home Hilltopper freshman Christian Knapczyk, for the only run he would need, in the third inning.

“It felt really good to finally come up with a big hit for us,”

Tyrell said.

In the sixth, Hilltopper sophomore centerfielder Greg Ziegler, after fielding a single to center, fired a perfect-strike to Hilltopper catcher Simon Grashoff, to shoot down a Marian Catholic baserunner, trying to score the tying run. Wills finished off Marian Catholic (15-6, 9-2) in the seventh.

The two clubs will play at Marian Catholic on Friday at 4:30.

JOLIET CENTRAL 8, ARGO 6 The Steelmen (10-14-3) won a nonconference shootout at Summit Argo (6-17), behind Tom Langley and Fabian Requena.

Langley had two hits and drove home two Steelmen runs while Requena, also plated a pair for Joliet Central. Johnny Slattery added had two hits and an RBI, while JoJo McNair chipped in with a pair of hits.

LOCKPORT 11, CHATHAM GLENWOOD 6 The Porters (13-11-1) salvaged a game, against the powerful Titans of Chatham Glenwood (15-6-1), in their final game in the Edwardsville Tigers Classic.

Slick-fielding Porter shortstop Steve Salvino led the Porter attack with three-run triple. Collin Woulfe also tripled, singled and had two RBI. On Friday night the Porters lost to host Edwardsville 3-1. Edwardsville (19-4-1), earlier on Saturday lost 2-0 to Chatham Glenwood.

PLAINFIELD NORTH 14, JOLIET CENTRAL 0 (5 INNINGS) Kegan Bates fired a two-hit shutout and the Tigers were led

by Alex Steinbach, Gavin Doyle and Curt Kissel, to stay atop the Southwest Prairie with the SPC win on Friday. Steinbach, Doyle and Kissel, all drove in three Tiger runs.

The Tigers will play at Plainfield South (17-6-1, 9-3) for first-place in the SPC on Monday at South. Tuesday the two clubs will meet at North.

The Indians were coming off a rough performance in the Pepsi Showdown, so the win, which moved them to 5-0 in the conference, was big for the team to get back on track.

“The Pepsi Tournament was rough for us with three losses, but we bumped up like three brackets from last year,” Arlis said. “Every game we have given our full effort and we’ve had some good games.”

“This really pushes us to keep doing better,” Arlis said. “All of the other sports I’m in, we are the team to beat in the conference. So this really pushes us to work hard to keep above everyone else. We want to go as far as we can. We want to show everyone how good we are.”

“We have to keep going out strong like today,” Morin said.

“Winning conference is a big goal now. We want to beat every team

in the conference. Right now we’re connecting real well and have a lot of confidence.”

However, sometimes a big win can cause a loss of focus and overconfidence for a team, especially one that isn’t used to being on the top of the conference.

Brolley feels focus will be a big key to keeping the momentum going en route to a conference championship.

“Focus is important,” Brolley

said. “We’re going to still have to do things right. We have to play every game as tough as we can. Mental focus will be the key. We’ve been playing quality opponents to get ready for games like this.”

Minooka will open the Class 3A playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the Edwardsville Sectional. The Indians play in the Moline Regional and will face the winner of No. 9 Rock Island and No. 6 Moline at 4:30 p.m. May 16.

Joliet West and Central are also in the Edwardsville Sectional and will both play in the Normal Regional. The No. 8 seed Tigers face No. 1 Normal Community at 4:30 p.m. May 16, while the Steelmen are the No. 7 seed and will face No. 4 Bradley-Bourbonnais at 6:30 p.m.

Lockport is the No. 11 seed in its own sectional and also hosts the regional. The Porters host No. 7 Plainfield North May. 17 at 4:30 p.m.

USF wins CACC tourney The University of St. Francis softball team made history on Saturday, capturing the program’s first-ever Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament crown with a 6-2 victory over Olivet Nazarene University at The Ballpark at Rosemont.

Junior center fielder Anna Wetherell’s (Rock Island, Ill./ Alleman Catholic) three-run triple in the fourth inning keyed the victory, putting the Saints up 4-0 at that point.

Junior designated player Ally Balandis (Burbank, Ill./ Reavis)

and sophomore left fielder Hailey Lenth (Colona, Ill./ United Township) also drove in a run and had a pair of hits each, while junior second baseman Brooke Karraker (Kankakee, Ill./ Herscher) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Saint starter Morghan Dieringer (New Lenox, Ill./ Lincoln-Way West) (24-4) had her 19 2/3-inning tournament scoreless streak snapped in the fifth inning, but went on to complete the sweep of wins in the tournament. She went 4-0 with three complete games to earn tournament mvp honors.

A total of 20 players were named to the all-tournament squad with six representing St. Francis. Besides Dieringer, Balandis, Karraker, Lenth, Wetherell and junior third baseman Katelyn Rolniak (Manteno, Ill./ Manteno) were all honored.

The Saints now take their 41-5 mark and No. 11 national ranking into the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, a four-team, double-elimination tournament which runs May 1517 at one of a possible ten sites.

Tournament pairings will be announced next Wednesday.

Don’t compromise your emergency fund I recommend always having three to six months of expenses set aside for emergencies DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are debt-free, and we’re ready to start building our first home. We’re a little short on cash to make the 20 percent down payment you recommend, but we do have a fully funded emergency fund in place. Would it be okay to take a little out of our emergency fund to make up the difference?

CHRIS DEAR CHRIS, Well, you didn’t give me exact numbers here. I don’t know how short a little short is, and I don’t know how big your emergency fund is. If you use a little of your emergency fund to round off the 20 percent and then you have an emergency, where are you going to be?

I recommend always having

three to six months of expenses set aside for emergencies. If you’ve got $50,000 in your emergency fund and you use $10,000 of it, you’ll be fine. But anything that leaves you with less than three or four months of expenses stashed away would worry me.

That’s the way you’ve got to look at it. Just use a little common sense with the numbers. I’d love for you to put down 20 percent because you’d avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI), which runs about $75 a month per $100,000 borrowed.

It costs you a lot of money if you don’t put down 20 percent.

You should try to do that if possible, but don’t be irresponsible with your emergency fund in the process.

DEAR DAVE, I’ll be getting out of the military soon, and I want to open a coffee roastery in civilian life. I had planned to work at an established place like Starbucks for a while so I can learn the business. Recently, I’ve become concerned with this idea from an ethical point of view.

Can you give me some guidance?

The fact that you have enough integrity to even think about this

means you’re a conscientious, honest person. I think you’re going to be okay. Making and serving coffee is not a proprietary set of information. It’s done all over the world by lots of people, so you’re not violating any ethics by doing that. Now there would definitely be something wrong with you stealing another company’s exact recipes or logo, but I think you already knew that. There’s nothing wrong with learning how to make different coffee drinks that are made all over the world. Starbucks doesn’t have a corner on that. Tips for dining out on Mother’s Day Despite distance, you can still make the day special for mom other’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family.

A vast number of families travel to their favorite restaurants for Mother’s Day meals. Mother’s Day is one of the busiest holidays of the year for restaurants. The National Retail Federation says 54.8 percent of Americans treat their mothers to a special meal out on Mother’s Day. Billions of dollars are generated by people eating out with their mothers.

With large crowds to be expected, diners can follow a few tips when treating Mom to a meal.

BOOK EARLY ... VERY EARLY To guarantee a reservation at any restaurant, namely your favorite restaurant, you will need to make a reservation well in advance of Mother’s Day. It’s never too early to put your name on the reservation list.

Don’t forget Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11, 2014.

EXPECT TO WAIT Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door.

Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained.

CONSIDER DINING OUT A DAY BEFORE OR AFTER Restaurants are generally packed on Mother’s Day, and as a result kitchen and wait staffs might be overtaxed. What’s more, diners might be relegated to a special or abbreviated menu. If you want a

more relaxed setting and the ability to order whatever you desire, it may be a better idea to celebrate Mother’s Day in advance. Then have Mom enjoy a relaxing day at home on her special day.

TAKE-OUT IS AN OPTION Families can treat Mom to a dinner out, without really having to go out. Many restaurants offer takeout service, so you will not be limited to pizza or Chinese. Even chain restaurants have curbside service, so if Mom is in the mood for a burger or something more elaborate, she’ll have that option.

EXPECT AN INCLUDED GRATUITY Restaurants often include a gratuity in the bill when servicing larger parties, such as those that might be celebrating Mother’s Day. The standard gratuity rate is 18 percent, but you may want to go above and beyond if you feel the service is exemplary.

HIRE A SITTER FOR YOUNG KIDS Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted.

Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating.
