Officials mull contract with development Retail Coach is seeking 1-year, $20K agreement to extend the timeframe for services provided to village

To maximize the village’s prospects for drawing in new developers and retailers, the Shorewood Village Board of Trustees discussed the idea of approving a one-year contract extension with The Retail Coach. Shorewood officials came to a consensus at their March 28 meeting that tabling the board’s vote on a contract agreement with this consulting firm is warranted.

Trustee Daniel Warren was absent.

“We’ve been working on many things this year,” Community Development Director Karen James said. “In consideration for the third year, this was budgeted in the current fiscal year that’s ending… March 31st. This was budgeted last year, so this would be the agreement for our third year, which would begin after we do this. The budget we just passed would actually be for our fourth year in the future if we decide to do that.”

The Retail Coach is seeking a one-year, $20,000 agreement to extend the timeframe for the services provided to the village.

The Retail Coach Senior Vice President Aaron Farmer said he, his staff and the village are always looking for new ways to get retailers interested in doing business in

Shorewood.

“We have the capabilities now to do a cellphone analysis, and we actually did this at Shorewood Crossing, kind of [near] Marianos,” he said. “As long as you go into a store and you make a phone call, you get an email or you get a text, we’re able to track your home address based off your cellphone.

It’s obviously scary information from a retailer-developer’s point of view. Having that kind of information [and] knowing where your consumer is coming from, that’s extremely power to convince them to come to the store to know who their customer is.”

This technology does not allow the village or The Retail Coach to access messages or emails, but they’re able to track the region in which people are shopping.

That new technology has been accessible for the last four to five months.

Often retailers and developers will first seek information on what sites are available within the communities they’re considering.

Farmer said they’ve also worked on creating site profiles to ensure the village stays ahead of the curve.

“This speeds up the process,” he said. “Anytime we’re talking to a retailer, restaurant we can say, ‘look, here are the three sites that fit your criteria.’ That… helps speed up

their process.”

Farmer recognizes that competition exists to bring retailers into town and said they’re working to get them.

To date, the village has created 20 site profiles.

“We all know that Which Wich [Sandwiches] is coming to the community,” Farmer said. “We developed a specific bargaining package for Which Wich that had their logo on it, … and it contained specific information to them.

Do they look for a certain demographic? Do they look for certain trade area size? We built up these custom marketing packages with their logo on them, and that’s what helps convince these retailers, convince these restaurants, these developers they need to come in.”

Farmer added that the same goes for developers and the marketing packages they’re presented.

The Retail Coach is currently in the middle of talking with three developers about coming to Shorewood.

Farmer said they’re also working with a couple of restaurants and retailers, with one likely development being a shoe store.

“They’ve narrowed it down to three sites,” he said of the shoe store. “Now, the step is get that site

selector out here.”

James referenced interest by a large entertainment-type developer in doing business in Shorewood and said they’ve been working hard to match them with a retailer in recent weeks.

Farmer said it’s a lot about marrying retailers with developers, retailers with developers and putting it all together.

“There are specific retailers— large retailers—and a couple of developers that are pretty close on deals,” Farmer said. “Karen referenced them already. They’re pretty close to happening.”

Trustee Anthony Luciano questioned what happens to these deals if the village ends its agreement with The Retail Coach.

“If we didn’t continue on with the program, would we still be able to develop those or are they going away?” he asked.

Farmer said though Karen could surely do a nice job, he thinks The Retail Coach brings a lot to the table to assist the village in its pursuits also.

Trustee Daniel Anderson wants to see more face-to-face recruitment occurring to help convince developers and retailers to come into town.

Farmer explained that it is not

unusual for contact to be made virtually or by phone.

Luciano said his concern is that he wants to see greater results.

“I’m kind of confused that why we have to keep doing all this marketing to keep it up to date when if someone’s interested they should be interested based on what they already saw, not on what’s going to be the future,” he said. “They have to project that themselves with their own marketing department I would suspect.”

Farmer tried to explain “I can see that side of things, but it works a little bit differently,” he said. “I’d ask you to then realize retail recruitment is a process. So, there’s a bunch of communities out there that… are very similar to Shorewood. So, you’re competing with those in the greater Chicagoland area, which are also competing with others maybe in downstate [Illinois], maybe you’re competing with some in Missouri.

What’s going to make Shorewood stand out from these other communities?”

Trustee Edmund Murphy motioned for the contract agreement to be tabled. This matter is to be reviewed by the board in April, at which point officials will look to vote.

Men Who Cook continues to serve good eats Men Who Cook typically features 50 cooks who prepare selections of food for attendees to sample

The Will County Children’s Advocacy Center turned down the heat and allowed it to simmer and marinade at its annual March 25 Men Who Cook.

The event, held at Pipefitters Local 597 in Mokena, was meant to please attendees by serving up smiles one plate at a time, with the goal of raising funds to help abused children.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said the event is designed for everyone to enjoy.

“Because of the atmosphere here, food… stimulates conversation,” he said. “If somebody’s going, ‘wow, this is really good.’ You’ll say, ‘well, where did you get that?’

Then, you’ll say, ‘well, you got to try this, too.’ People are talking to each other who had never talked to each other at a normal event.”

Men Who Cook typically features 50 cooks who prepare selections of food for attendees to sample. From macaroni and cheese and meatballs to chili and brisket, a host of dishes were served.

Tom Grotovsky, of Mokena, was preparing beef tenderloin bits au poivre for attendees to try.

“I’ve been doing this nine years ever since it started,” he said. “I started doing it because of what the cause is all about. It’s fantastic for the children right here in our county.”

Grotovsky turned up the heat and let the flame roar across his cooking pan and said everyone seemed to be enjoying what he had to offer.

“Everybody says it’s wonderful,” he said. “I started out with about 50 pounds of this before it’s all trimmed. Then, I seasoned it and [made] my sauce… [I] flame it with cognac, and it turns into a heavy cream.”

Attendee Edward Ronaowski, of Mokena, said he enjoys what the event offers. “I’ve been to most of them,” he said.

Ronaowski noted that he sampled many different items and said his favorite dish, though, is

“the chili.”

Ronaowski said he’s been most surprised by how wonderful the food is.

“It goes from good to great to wow,” he said.

Kathy Hilton, of New Lenox, said she’s glad that she decided to drop in.

“It’s as I remember it,” she said.

“I liked it so much last year I came back to it.”

Hilton was mingling while sampling food with her husband.

“It’s a good date night,” she said.

Hilton said she couldn’t believe how many different dishes were featured.

“The variety that these creative chefs constantly come up with [is surprising,]” she said. “Every year, it’s more and more creative.”

Glasgow said he’s pleased by this year’s turnout.

“The pre-sold tickets, I think it was [500] or 600 on the internet,” Glasgow said. “For a local event, that is truly amazing. I think that people understand that children who are the victims of sexual

abuse are special victims in our criminal justice system, and the people who do it are extremely dangerous and must be convicted and punished.”

But that doesn’t end there for abused children, Glasgow said.

“They’re scarred, and it’s critical they get the right intervention psychologically and counselingwise,” he said. “We also have our [therapy] dogs that are present for the interviews, which really helps to relax the child, lower their stress level so that we get a complete and truthful statement.”

The children are interviewed by trained forensic interviewers who work to build trust with them to obtain the information needed to support a case.

Glasgow said it’s wonderful seeing the way the community comes together for Men Who Cook.

“We’ve been very fortunate,” he said. “Each one has been better than the one before. Last year, we brought in about $75,000, and we’re already pass that.”

Glasgow added that the organi-

zation was hoping to reach six figures with the funds received.

ABC-TV showcases a new face from disabled community Sitcom ‘Speechless’ has as its mission to include disability community in television

BY DANIEL SMROKOWSKI BUGLE COLUMNIST A month ago, I spent four-anda-half hours on a gray couch in the Changing The Face of Beauty studio to film an interview for their new #FaceMyBeauty Couch Series.

As I wore a blue button down shirt, khaki pants, and a blue blazer, I was grateful for the opportunity to be part of this new Couch video series.

This new platform gives me, and others in the disability community, a place to talk about the need for our representation in advertising and in the media in general.

In the opening scene of this video, I talked about how the lack of inclusion in media matters to me because there isn’t understanding in the general public of the special needs community.

As the founder and host of Special Chronicles, a media platform that gives respect and voice to people with special needs, I am passionate about telling the stories of those of us with special needs.

This lack of understanding of those of us with disabilities in the media means that viewers don’t see us.

By us not being seen, the mainstream community cannot understand and accept us.

This is a time to celebrate the acceptance and inclusion of those of us with disabilities in the media.

It is time to showcase the lives of those with disabilities on media platforms.

In the media, whether on film, television, radio, or podcast, those of us with disabilities are rarely seen, and, if we are we are not usually portrayed in a positive light.

Today, however, the inclusion of people with disabilities in the media is beginning to change for the better.

The general public is beginning to see the joy on the faces of those who are diagnosed with special needs.

A Palos Park-based nonprofit, Changing The Face of Beauty, is the driving force behind this #FaceMyBeauty Couch Series.

ing individuals in the disability community the opportunity to sit on their couch and talk about how the media and advertising worlds can change the face of beauty.

The Couch Series has its mission to include people with disabilities in advertising and, more generally, in the media.

Another enterprise, the ABC sitcom “Speechless,” has as its mission to include the disability community in entertainment television.

The television show “Speechless” is breaking new ground as being one of the first sitcoms to feature a character and actor diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

The show centers around the daily life of a special needs family— The DiMeo family includes Maya (Minnie Driver) and Jimmy (John Ross Bowie) and their three children: JJ (Micah Fowler), Ray (Mason Cook), and Dylan (Kyla Kenedy)— and JJ’s aide Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough).

As with the many different types of disabilities, there is no one disability diagnoses that is the same.

The character of JJ DiMeo was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is also nonverbal.

JJ communicates with a letter board and has someone else speak for him.

The actor Micah Fowler, who plays JJ, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is verbal.

Even though it takes Micah a while to speak, he is still able to communicate for himself. Micah has to use a lot of facial cues and body language to play the character of JJ. In this role of JJ, I believe that Micah should be recognized for the outstanding work that he is doing as an actor.

This show is not meant to be an “after school special” but a funny and honest television sitcom show.

Micah Fowler’s family, and others in the disability community, do consult on the television show to make sure that there is this realistic portrayer of

disability.

In many of the episodes, it takes on disability issues but does so in a light, comedic tone.

Many in the special needs community can laugh at scenes on “Speechless” while it also being very autobiographical to their own life.

For one viewer in the disability community who I have spoken to explained that when she talks with her friends she says that this show is “my life in a sitcom.”

“It’s [Speechless’s] so crazy that it’s funny,” said Sarah Kate Sligh, an eighth grade student from Alabama who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. “But it’s just realistic I can relate too.”

Sarah Kate’s own mom, Andi of the blog BringingTheSunshine.com, can even relate to the character of Maya DiMeo and the “hate list” that Maya has on the “Speechless” television show. There are certain places where Andi will not go because it may not be disability friendly.

A few weeks ago, the cast and crew of “Speechless” wrapped filming Season One. The Season One finale, episode 23, titled “C-A-CAMP,” will air on the ABC network the beginning of May. During the filming of the finale, Kelsey Fowler, the older sister of Micah Fowler, flew from New York City to Los Angeles to be on set for the filming of “Speechless.”

She documented her brother Micah on her own YouTube Channel Vlog.

Even though for the many months that Micah is filming “Speechless,” he and his sister Kelsey are across the country from each other, they are really close to each other.

“Speechless” is an excellent vehicle for more inclusion and accurate inclusion in the mainstream media.

It has been the standard that when a team makes it to the IHSA state finals, the players from that team that have been invited to the Voyager Media Prep Shootout do not play in the game due mainly to pure exhaustion.

After all, those players have just played two of the hardest games of the season on back-to-back nights and more than likely returned to a community celebration that Sunday afternoon.

This season, however, that trend was bucked as two of the players from Bolingbrook’s Class 4A third place team – Cameron Harris and Nana Akenten – did show up and play in the game.

Akenten, who played 59 of the 64 possible minutes in Peoria, came out and put on a highlight show at the Shootout with jaw dropping dunks.

“I just love the game,” he said that night.

On the season, the Nebraskabound senior averaged 14.8 point and 5.7 rebounds per game, was named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 3A/4A first team and led the Raiders to its second third-place trophy in three seasons.

For that, he is the 2017 Voyager Media Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Akenten was part of both the trophy winning clubs, but he had

a much different role the last time around.

“My sophomore year, I was the guy that was supposed to come off the bench and do what I was told and I got really limited minutes,” he said. “I think that really helped me for this year. I saw what it took and I saw Prentiss (Nixon) and Brodric (Thomas) and my brother (Dimitri Akenten ) and all the seniors. They had the same mentality and they were on the same page all the time. I understood what kind of determination it took to get down here.

“Being a senior and being able to lead my team down here is amazing. In the beginning of the season, we had a lot of doubters who didn’t think we could be very good, but we just took that as motivation and we strived for the best.”

Akenten always strived for the best in his own game as well.

Unlike some of the players like Nixon and current sophomore Joseph Yesufu who have been on scouts’ radar since junior high, Akenten took his raw ability and molded it into a Division-I type player via hard work.

“It was a lot of hard work,” he said. “There is a point where skill is just not enough. If all I know how to do is shoot and my opponent is in the gym learning to defend me, he will prosper instead of me.”

We have had kids like Prentiss and Joe (Yesufu) and people know who they are before they even get to Bolingbrook High School, but we take pride in how we develop our kids and they players they become and especially the people that they are.

“He has matured so much and a human being even more than a player and obviously, he is a great player. He has worked his way into being a first team all stater, McDonald’s All-American candidate,

Gatorade Player of the Year nominee and all the stuff he is getting and then he is going to play in the Big 10, which speaks for itself. The best thing about him is that he is humble, he trusts the coaches and he cares about his teammates.”

Akenten credits that team bond to helping the success this season.

“Having a team like this is a blessing,” he said. “I have never played on a team like this before.

Not even the basketball aspect, but just the love around the team.

We are truly a family. We spend a lot of time together off the court.”

Head coach Tony Talley’s squad topped a field of 20 teams at the three-day event held at Collins Eastland Bowl which concluded Sunday afternoon.

You work overtime, and rake in that extra cash, for the good of your family. That’s the manly thing to do.

Now, that’s not to say you both can’t have a little spending money.

It also doesn’t mean that you can’t treat yourself once in a while if you’re working your tail off. I mean, if I’m working 70 to 80 hours a week I may give myself a little inexpensive treat in the midst of all that. So, my spending money budget should reflect that. But it shouldn’t reflect a sense that I get to play more because I work extra, while the rest of the family suffers.
