Musician gets back violin after nearly a decade Casey McGrath gets back stolen violin after eight years missing

Eight years after her prized violin was stolen from her home, a local musician experienced an unexpectedly upbeat coda.

On March 4, 2011, Casey McGrath found her Joliet home had been burglarized while she’d been out. Among the valuables taken was Casey’s violin — a Mietek Rusnak valued at $12,000.

Casey is a professional musician who holds a doctorate in violin performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

She’s performed as a soloist with orchestras and symphonies, regularly rocked out at bars and taught music studies at Lewis University and Joliet Junior College. She also plays for events at Holy Family Church in Shorewood.

So the loss of her violin was devastating.

“It’s like an extension of my arm,” she said after the break-in - in which computers, a camera, jewelry and another violin that belonged to one of her students were also taken.

State Farm paid out on an insurance policy. McGrath was able to borrow other violins for performances and eventually purchased an Italian violin made in 1713,

which she calls “The Laurel” because it’s “the flower of success.”

“The Laurel has become mine and I’ve grown into it, but of course I wondered whatever happened to the one that was taken,” she said. “There’s an international registry. I looked online sometimes, but I never expected to see it again.”

A man was recently looking online for a violin so his son could start lessons and purchased an $80 instrument on Facebook Marketplace, according to information Will County Sheriff’s police provided McGrath. After researching the Rusnak he received, the man became suspicious he’d unintentionally purchased stolen property and contacted the police.

Eight years and three days after her violin had been stolen, McGrath received a phone call she never imagined.

“After frantically pulling on the first pair of sweatpants I could grab, I was white-knuckling my steering wheel en route to the sheriff’s evidence and property return department,” McGrath said.

Several minutes later, he returned with a royal blue instrument case she recognized immediately.

“I got so emotional. I set it right on the chairs by the lockers and

The impromptu concert in the atrium brought secretaries to their doorways and detectives leaned over the railings of the second floor to listen to Saint-Saens’ Concerto in B Minor.

“I had a lot of things in my head,

but as I listened, I realized how much I’ve grown in the last eight years,” McGrath said.

McGrath’s sheet music and homework were still in the case, though most of the hair was gone from the bow.

Because of the insurance payout, the recovered item was now actually State Farm’s property, but McGrath’s agent, John Wright, had more good news for her.

“It’s not a car or jewelry they

could sell to anyone, and State Farm doesn’t want to be in the instrument selling business, so he called back and said ‘Keep it’ They’re gifting it to me,” McGrath said.

The Rusnak needs some restoration - new strings and a bridge.

McGrath said it will not replace The Laurel as her go-to instrument.

Two people drown in the DuPage River Man and woman entered the water near the Hammel Woods Dam

Two people drowned March 31 in the DuPage River near the Hammel Woods Dam in Shorewood.

About 5:50 p.m. a 28-year-old man went into the water near the dam, which is yards from where Route 52 passes over the river.

While the shore and concrete pier near the dam are popular fish-

ing sites, swimming is prohibited and “Strong Undertow” signs are posted.

Will County Forest Preserve spokeswoman Cindy Cain said after the man went into the river, a 22-year-old woman went in after him.

“They were by themselves and we don’t know why they went in, but a witness heard her yelling for help and called 911,” Cain said.

A Will County Sheriff’s deputy

was in the area and saw both people near the dam. A Troy firefighter arrived and saw the man on the surface.

“The firefighter went into the water with a rope tied around him, but couldn’t find the man,” Cain said.

Police and firefighters walked along the shore and searched the river in boats until 9 p.m. when darkness prohibited further searching.

The man’s body was found further downriver late the following morning and the woman’s in the early afternoon.

Their identities were unavailable at press time.

Access points at Hammel Woods were closed during the search.

The dam, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a New Deal project during the Great

Depression, has been the site of previous drownings and water rescues over the years.

Cain said the Forest Preserve decided in 2017 to remove the dam and was scheduled to solicit bids for the project next week.

Bolingbrook duo leads All-Area team

Every year, there is only one team that can end the season in each class as a champion.

That team the past two seasons in Class 4A has been Belleville West. This year, the path to the repeat went through the Illinois State University Super-sectional where West defeated the Raiders.

The loss not only ended the dreams of the Raiders bringing another state trophy back to Bolingbrook, it also ended the career of two players who have been a huge part of the Raiders’ success the last four years in Tyler Cochran and Joseph Yesufu.

On the season, Yesufu averaged 16.5 points, 3.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, while Cochran, who was hurt for the early part of the season, averaged 14 points, 9.5 rebounds and two steals per contest.

Yesufu earned a pair of allstate honors as he was named to the Class 4A Illinois Basketball

Coached Association second team and was honorable mention all-state by the Associated Press.

For their efforts, the Raider tandem have been named as 2019 Voyager Media Boys Basketball Co-Players of the Year.

“Tyler and I work out together a lot and our main goal is to get each other better and we constantly have pushed each other since freshman year to do that,” Yesufu said. “In middle school, we competed against each other and we were enemies, but we grew into being best friends.”

Early in the season it was Yesufu’s team to lead with Cochran injuring his finger the day before the opening game of the season.

Sitting out wasn’t how the Northern Illinois Universitybound Cochran wanted to start his senior year.

“It was tough having to be basically a player coach while I was hurt early. I had to see things from the coaches’ perspective and help the guys either on the court or off – getting water or being there and telling them

how I see it and helping them any way I can,” he said. “Coming back, I felt like I had something to prove. We gave it our all and it just wasn’t enough, but we lost to the best.”

The one thing that has been the same in both Cochran’s and Yesufu’s game since they cracked the varsity roster is their ability and willingness to do whatever is needed to help the team win.

“Ever since I was a freshman, coach (Rob) Brost has talked about being a good player and I

feel I can do whatever he needs done no matter if it is to score 30, to score five or score none and get rebounds, getting steals and playing defense,” Cochran said. “Scoring is cool and all, but at the end of the day, it is all about getting the W and make sure I play my hardest – that’s what matters most to me.”

As sophomores, the duo earned third-place medals at the state tournament “We accomplished a lot as a team,” Yesufu said. “Although it

didn’t end with a state championship, I feel we left a legacy at Bolingbrook.”

Other members of the first team are: TREY BOSTON, DOWNERS GROVE NORTH Running mate to fellow firstteamer Semaj Henderson, Boston averaged 16.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while helping the Trojans win 22 games in the 2018-19 season, which is the SEE ALL-AREA PAGE 6

DIAMOND PRESNIAKOVAS, PLAINFIELD SOUTH Senior swingman shot 52 percent from the field, averaged 18.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game will be attending Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL this upcoming fall.

KENDRICK TCHOUA, BENET

ACADEMY The 6-foot, 6-inch Tchoua averaged 16.8 points, 7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game for the Redwings. Tchoua has offers from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Valparaiso, Buffalo, Ohio and Northern Iowa. He is a member of the Class 4A Associated Press honorable mention all-state team.

SECOND TEAM TROY D’AMICO, NOTRE DAME All-Conference Selection in ESCC, Averaged 14.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Made 66 three-pointers on the year at a 40 percent clip, and has 677 career points through his sophomore campaign.

JUSTIN EAGINS, DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH Senior Mustang who averaged 17.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

He made 95 career 3-point field goals in his career, and scored more than 1,000 points in his two-year varsity career.

ESSAM HAMWI, MAINE SOUTH Senior guard averaged 13.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Also chipped in with 1.2 steals per game.

WESLEY HOOKER, DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH Hooker averaged 14.1 points, 7.5 assists, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game while leading his team to a 23-8 overall record.

DAKODA JOACHIM, JOLIET CENTRAL Junior Steelmen who averaged 11.9 points, shot 44.9 percent from the field and shot 70.9 percent from the free throw line.

How To Deal With An Irresponsible Adult Stepchild DEAR DAVE, I’m getting married this summer and about to become a stepfather, but my fiancé’s daughter from a previous marriage seems very irresponsible.

She’s 20 and lives at home, has trouble holding a job, and she doesn’t really want to work. When she doesn’t have money to make her car payment, she seems to expect her mom to pay it for her. My fiancé and I both agree that she’s been too lenient with her in the past, but she doesn’t want to suddenly pull the rug out from under her. How do you think we should approach this situation?

KENDALL DEAR KENDALL,

Marriage counselors say you have a good chance of having a successful marriage if you’re in agreement on four things—religion, money, children, and in-laws. So, first things first.

I’d strongly suggest you and your fiancé go through pre-marital counseling to make sure you’re on the same page when it comes to handling this and other issues.

If you and her mom really want to show her you love her, you’ll make sure she starts learning some character and discipline. And it’s very important that both of you are on the same page and in agreement every step of the way. You might also want to read a book together by Dr. Henry Cloud called “Boundaries.” This is a great book, and it will give you both several ideas for creating a reasonable timeline aimed at teaching her more responsibility.

I would advise letting her mom present any changes to her initially.

Neither of you wants to create a scenario where you’re viewed as the bad guy. Let her mom start the process by explaining that she made a few mistakes in terms of teaching her more about personal responsibility and selfreliance when she was younger. Then, she can begin to lay out the first few rules and expectations. In my mind, there’s nothing wrong with requiring her to get a job within 30 days if she doesn’t already have one. If she needs to go job hunting, make sure she’s out of bed and on the road no later than 8:00 a.m. every morning. During this first phase, looking for work every day should be her job. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to start teaching her about budgeting, saving, and everything else that goes into handling money responsibly during this time, too.

No judicial sale fee shall be paid by the mortgagee acquiring the residential real estate pursuant to its credit bid at the sale or by any mortgagee, judgment creditor, or other lienor acquiring the residential real estate whose rights in and to the residential real estate arose prior to the sale. All payments shall be made in cash or certified funds payable to the Sheriff of Will County.

In the event the property is a condominium, in accordance with 735 ILCS 5/15-1507(c)(1) (H-1) and (H-2), 765 ILCS 605/9(g)(5), and 765 ILCS 605/18.5(g-1), you are hereby notified that the purchaser of the unit, other than a mortgagee, shall pay the assessments and legal fees required by subdivisions (g)(1) and (g)(4) of Section 9 and the assessments required by subsection (g-1) of Section 18.5 of the Illinois Condominium Property Act. Pursuant to Local Court Rule 11.03 (J) if there is a surplus following application of the proceeds of sale, then the plaintiff shall send written notice pursuant to 735 ILCS 5/15-1512(d) to all parties to the proceeding advising them of the amount of the surplus and that the surplus will be held until a party obtains a court order for its distribution or, in the absence of an order, until the surplus is forfeited to the State.
